    there's an important correction about the Post Office; it does have some "special powers" above and beyond the norm. as an example, in Scotland it is known as a Specialist Reporting Agency. this means that it can report crimes/cases in the same way that the police do. an SRA can report them directly to the same people that police report suspects to. as another example, Post Office Investigators have more powers than the average private investigator (such as access to Police databases and the right to authorize surveillance)

    It was humour and you said it, to “cut through”, in this case the absurd and incredible facts the defendants laid before the enquiry. It made them look ridiculous without calling them blatant liars.

    it's a real shame that everyone from the lawyers to the investigators to the managers to the execs ALL were trying to fight against these bad things happening, but they were just unable to accomplish it "at the time". I'm wondering what force was preventing them, cause it sounds like everyone around them was (secretly and never written in emails) on the same page. what a shame. how horrible that all these hardworking people were unable to do anything.....while writing emails that actively advanced the wrongdoings and horrific tragedies

    I think one important distinction in the Facial Recognition comparison is that Horizon was suffering bugs while the Recognition software was functioning as they'd designed it (but that design was flawed). when Horizon added things to balances when it shouldn't be, it was performing actions that shouldn't be part of the process. the FR software is, for want of a better term, "working as intended" but it's just bad at its job. the racism coded into it means it does poorly on black faces, but that just means it spits out the wrong score/result for its comparison check. it's a flaw, but it's not causing unintended behaviour; by which I mean it's not like when the software sees a black person then it suddenly starts trying to print the picture or ask for the user's login details. it performs poorly, but it still performs the actions it was told to perform. Horizon behaved in unexpected ways. it initiated processes and did things it shouldn't have been doing. so while the comparison is interesting (and I think has some merit in terms of thinking about the impact of code and being careful when you write it), I'm not sure if it's the most applicable

  • @MrDanlancelot

    I can do some quick maths for George; I've seen reported in several places that Horizon had about 15000 users. 900 SPMs were prosecuted as thieves. so that's about 1 in 15 people (or about 7%). so even to get down to that "1%" (tho I'm not sure it's a good system because it only ruins the lives of 1 in 100 people who use it, but let's ignore that), then we have to assume that 5 out of 6 SPMs (750 in total) that were prosecuted were lying about Horizon issues

    an important thing of note about his end statement; he doesn't say anything new. it's all things he's been screaming about in all his other answers. he spends his entire time in court whining about not being asked the questions he wants and ignoring the points made in his witness statement. but when he's given the floor and he's allowed to mention all the things that have been stifled and ignored and hidden by the court's "narrative"......he literally starts by saying "to repeat what I've already said" and then just says all the things he's been saying non-stop. so what points were ignored? what information was in there that he was so desperate to get out there? what was the court apparently trying to hide and cover up by not mentioning it? because when given the opportunity, he actually has nothing new to bring up

  • @MrDanlancelot
    @MrDanlancelot 9 годин тому

    I hate this whole "reputation of the Post Office" and "protecting the brand" nonsense so many witnesses cling to. if I need to post a letter, I'm still going to drop it in the little red postbox down the street whether or not the Post Office has the worst reputation in the world. that's how post works. and while they may be more concerned about large companies using their service to send larger (and much more profitable) deliveries, then it's still nonsense. bad reputation about the quality of the service and how well they send packages will deter business, nothing else

    Not only is Jason Beer clear, he is also concise, and unlike Sam Stein, he doesn't use the tool of emotion very much. Generally, the witnesses are inclined to start to answer him without taking time to formulate their responses, so they are halfway through before they start to be aware of how it makes them look. Singh was perhaps the worst of the witnesses. I think Williams, throughout the questioning, was too busy trying to neutralise his responses to hold the question in he was being asked in his head. I would totally disagree with one of your final comments about Beer making the senior management feel foolish. You can't make anyone feel that some with the biggest egos will believe they were doing a good job regardless of how they performed in the questioning. On the other hand, there are those who underneath have had doubts about their ability but masked it who will see this as reinforcing those doubts. I feel that Vennels comes into the latter category.

    All those Post Office officials are (in my opinion) a bad bunch of lying xxxx's! I worked for The Royal Mail during the PO scandal and we knew that there was massive problems with The Horizon IT system. Let's hope this enquiry isn't just a process that has cost the British taxpayer a lot of money and that heads roll and the accused sub-postmasters get some REAL compensation. The problem is the UK government owns The Post Office. Don't hold your breath.....

    I have known Jason for the best part of 20 years, and he’s one of the most intelligent, thoughtful, decent people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. In an era of sportspeople getting knighthoods for dong their job, it’s a travesty that he hasn’t already been recognised. It’s not just the POL case, it’s Hillsbrough, and so many other cases that didn’t get the column inches that this one has done. I hope, when this inquiry is over, he will get the recognition he so truly deserves.

    Jason Beer KC has been instrumental in revealing the depth of corruption and incompetence in POL over the Horizon scandal. I got the clear impression that in true adversarial style, he knows the answers to the questions he asks, and he knows the answers will be damning. He has a granular understanding and a natural authority emanating from it.

    I've watched almost all your videos on the Post Office scandal with a mixture of enthrall and appall. As an Australian I see massive parallels with our Robodebt scandal. But Robodebt seems even worse because the agency entrusted with persuing the criminal perpetrators has itself corruptly failed to bring them to justice. Can you please look into Paul Brereton, the NACC, Scott Morrison, Gail Furness, Kathryn Campbell and why Anthony Albanese is so reluctant to persue criminal charges against Scott Morrison for his role in this human catastrophe.

    At some stage I know that Mr Beer will watch this and I hope that he appreciates your exposition. I think you may have missed a number of reasons why he is 'magnificent'. First is Preparation. He obviously has a great team behind him and they have clear instruction of the relevance of particular material and correlations inside the volumes of evidence. He has then developed a line (and rhythm) for questioning to get the answers well before appearing in the Inquiry. Second 'He seldom goes fishing'. He knows what the answers are and just wants them in the witness's words and therefore on the record. Third, 'He focuses on the witness statements first'. I would hate to face him the dock.

    I wholeheartedly applaud this video and the tremendous time and effort you clearly have expended, in this exemplary analytical production; this must have taken WEEKS! Curiously, one of the things I found so impressive, apart from his interrogatory skills, was his determination in matters of grammar. For instance, he was almost fanatical not to split a present infinitive, to the point where he actually rewrote certain quote passages, on the fly, to make them correct. He also never ended a sentence with a preposition. Outstanding discipline, particularly for English fuss-pots such as I. Thank you SO much for this phenomenal work, Dr. Duckett.
