SHROPSHIRE HILLS Hope Bowdler Hill
As near as, Hope Bowdler Hill is out of sight of Church Stretton, and for most ramblers out of mind - almost un-noticed. This really is a lovely hill which deserves exploring
Before setting off and for those parking by Hope Bowdler’s church, it might be appreciated how attractive the church is. Its roof has lines of tiles of two contrasting colours. The effect has faded a little over the years, but standing back a little you will espy Hope Bowdler Hill just beyond
Taking the most direct route and by walking alongside a stream you will soon notice the Gaer Stone before you on your RHS. This makes for some fine photographs when you reach it
From the Gaer Stone you will have views south-easterly towards Wenlock Edge and beyond it the Brown and Titterstone Clee Hills. You’ll also easily pick out the village from where you started. Moving clockwise, Hazler Hill (with it’s radio mask) is seen and then Church Stretton with The Long Mynd beyond it
After enjoying the extensive views and moving northwards, Caer Caradoc is seen ahead of you on your LHS. This is easy rambling countryside and in Spring you are likely to hear Skylarks singing joyously on the wing. I heard a Cuckoo on this particular visit - it was around a mile away, towards Cardington
There are three high points along Hope Bowdler Hill (a fourth just off to the east is much lower). This walk will naturally lead you onto Willstone Hill. You will also notice The Lawley further north of Caer Caradoc and in the distance (over to your RHS) The Wrekin can be seen
This walk started with the Gaer Stone and here it ends with Willstone Hill’s Battle Stones. The ground drops away more dramatically here

THE LONG MYND Small Batch, leading to Callow, Grindle and Round Hill
Переглядів 3863 роки тому
To my mind this is perhaps the nicest walk that could be found upon the Long Mynd (there are by the way, other contenders!) After turning away from the entrance to Ashes Hollow you are quickly into Small Batch. You immediately start to ascend along its southern flank. Only for a short stretch at the beginning, and another stretch around the half-way mark offer anything stiffer than an easy stro...
NATURE Spring Lambs
Переглядів 1103 роки тому
After a long, cold dark Winter - Spring! Its arrival is marked with bluebells daffodils and wild garlic ...... and lambs! They like sleeping, having a feed and walking around with mum, and should you be lucky running and jumping around like as though they've lost their marbles These lambs were filmed almost entirely in the Shropshire Hills - Tony Further information: www.countrysideonline.co.uk...
BORDERLANDS Criggion. The Breiddens
Переглядів 3953 роки тому
More correctly this is Breidden Hill, although most everyone who knows of the hill call it Criggion. This is likely because it is part of a chain of five adjoining hills along the English/Welsh border which are called The Breiddens. The two other main hills are Middletown Hill and Moel-y-Gest and are impossible not to notice as you travel between Shrewsbury and Welshpool on the main road Most o...
SHROPSHIRE HILLS Huglith Hill, near Pulverbatch
Переглядів 1273 роки тому
1 mile WSW from Pulverbatch, Huglith is a fine hill easily surmounted in 5 minutes after walking that 1 mile. There is easy parking at Castle Pulverbatch (Pulverbatch) and this historic site is worthy of taking a look at There are footpaths across the fields but I would prefer the stroll along the (dirt track) lane for the outward trip. Once you've reached the lane's highest point you will noti...
THE WELSH SEASIDE Aberaeron
Переглядів 3 тис.3 роки тому
Like most Welsh coastal towns Aberaeron has a rather small population - 1422 at the last count. Perhaps a little euphemistically the x2 beaches are described as 'storm beaches'. Being pebbly they are not its greatest asset. That is without doubt its secluded harbour which looks glorious on a sunny day. Alas on the visits I've made I've not actually seen any fishing boats although there are lobs...
SHROPSHIRE HILLS Cefn Gunthly & Heath Mynd, nr Bishop's Castle

Two very Welsh-sounding names, for two very English hills. To be fair they are right up against the Welsh border and Shropshire has plenty of other Welsh-sounding hills and hamlets. Rarely visited, you are most likely to notice Heath Mynd from passing northwards along the road from Bishop’s Castle They are both easily assailed together in an morning or afternoon, and you might as well take a ma...
SHROPSHIRE Heath Chapel, under Brown Clee Hill
Переглядів 2243 роки тому
A Norman chapel dating back to mid 12th century, Heath Chapel is as austere and simplistic as can be. It lies on the northern slopes of Brown Clee Hill between Diddlebury and Abdon Burf, and nearby to Nordy Bank No services take place there seeing as like with other hamlets the area has long since been de-populated, thought to be due possibly to the bubonic plague of 1320. Happily public access...
THE WELSH SEASIDE Tywyn
Переглядів 7 тис.3 роки тому
The town of Tywyn has a population of around 3250. Being so close to Aberdovey it is likely that many people heading to the coast would decide to end their journey there. Certainly, the town centre itself is not of any great beauty and won’t be winning prizes for such; but as a seaside resort it is well worth making a visit for as there is a fine beach to be enjoyed, alongside the possibility o...

Castell Dinas Bran lies barely a mile to the NE of Llangollen. Some people will walk from there, although it’s a fair hike for those simply trying this walking lark out. Trevor Rocks are approximately 1 mile NE of Llangollen. They lie on the southern edge of Eglwyseg Mountain and just beyond the nearby Castell Dinas Bran. I spent all my Summer holidays in Borth every year when i was growing up. As a family in the 70's we stayed every year in the same cottage just up on the little hill opposite the boat yard. We knew the old lady who lived in the next cottage, she had a TV & we didn't so she'd let us go round, she had a seagull called Peg who she rescued & nursed back to health. Us kids would sit on the grass at the front of the cottage (which is now privately owned) & wave at the passengers on the train going across the bridge above the river. We'd walk into Borth main street every day & get our milk from some place we passed by on our way there. We stopped going some time in the 80's, but still went back from time to time on day trips. Still love the place, but haven't been for years now. My parents are both 81 this year, how time flies ❤

..there's a baby swift in our home from the past week or above. Writing this from Hyderabad, India, Asia. We found the bird on 15th of May, (summer) on the stairs of our apartment. It was a small bird (baby I suppose). We gave it water through a dropper. In fact we didn't even know what bird it was and only after some googling we found it was a swift. The first two days we fed it only water at times. It was little energised. Eben After learning that it eats insects,we could not provide it because we had no insects here. And moreover we weren't sure if it can digest Coz babies are usually Fed by mothers partially digested food. We have been giving it some grains of boiled rice and boiled egg white. I even gave it black ants from our balcony which were about 7mm It always seems hungry, whenever we pass beside it, it comes closer to us and opens mouth. Any suggestions on what to feed it? Can I feed live worms(if so what should be the size of the worm) in how many days will it be able to fly. Anyone who had any idea can reply.
