  • Black Rock Sands is approximately 2 ½ miles from Porthmadog, supposing you head as most do to its most westerly point. There is also another access point nearer to Porthmadog
It is always a popular destination, but having around 2 miles for a glorious sandy beach there is plenty of space to be found. The facilities are modest but include a shop, toilets and a slipway for launching vessels. The nearby Morfa Bychan has a small supermarket, a fish-and-chips shop and a gift shop
The views all around are magnificent. To the SE Harlech and its castle can be picked out. The Rhinogs to the east are clearly discernable, along with the whole sweep of Snowdonia as you scan anti-clockwise. Just 1 mile to the north is the hill Moel-y-Gest before you see the Graig Ddu headland, which abuts the western edge of the beach. This is easily surmounted whereby there are all round views which include Criccieth with its castle
The beach is backed by extensive sand dunes. These are part of an SSSI site. Black Rock takes its name from the dark dolerite rocks which form a headland at its eastern edge, nearer to Borth-y-Gest. Porthmadog Golf Course is hereabouts
As can be seen from the video cars are allowed to park on the beach - not a surprise, a charge is payable. Perhaps surprisingly dogs are allowed to the greater part of the beach (see map www.visitsnowdonia.info/sites...)

Of all the times I've been to Blackrock Sands and walked in the caves, I've never been to the top of the rock to see that incredible view!
    Thankyou for sharing this.

Thanks for that. I'd seen an old photo looking NW from the top and it looked interesting. You could see where they had placed Black Rock railway station/halt - it was nowhere near the place, of course!

We went to BRS as a family on caravan holidays back in the 60's and 70's (I was born in '63). Lovely memories of exploring the rock pools with our bamboo cane nets, making sandcastles, catching crabs, swimming, and my Dad's car being parked on the beach, banana butties, footy on the beach and all the rest. The shove'a penny machines in the arcade on the caravan site, the table tennis as well in there. So many memories. The thing that was really evocative about this vid though, was the kite flying. What a simple and innocent pastime, that was so prevalent back then. I don't want to sound like a skeptic, but the same location today, at the same time of year, would surely feature people being on their phones. We are never off the stupid things! I am so thankful I grew up at that time.

    Lovely vid! 🙏🌸
I’m a driver myself but I’d happily welcome a vehicle ban on our beautiful beaches… and a mobile phone ban too! 🙈 I know I sound like an old party pooper! Lol

Thanks Rochelle!. It's a long walk from Porthmadog or Criccieth, but a car park wouldn't go amiss - they'd still charge of course!

@@swiftymorgan5064 Majority of beaches do ban cars it’s nice to have a few open to cars and experience a beach in a different way

If they banned cars from the beach they would need to turn some of the countryside into a car park. Better to have parking on the beach. It's probably one busy for two months a year.
