Could the Kenwood VP8000 multi band, multi protocol radio be my favorite radio?
Переглядів 1,9 тис.18 годин тому
The Kenwood VP 8000 is quite an incredible radio. The one feature that puts this radio head and shoulders above the rest is the ability to be multi protocol. It can be P25, nexden and or DMR… Pick two. It is very robust, great quality, and has really good programming software. If only this radio had No Affiliate Scan!

Ha, yeah sorry, it was more of a joke than anything. I edit a bit, but usually for my own trip videos. The real reason I don’t edit is that I’m a full time businessman, full time family man, and wouldn’t have the time to actually share what I think is cool if I had to set time aside for editing. I know my production quality is low, but I’d rather release videos than not.

My tiny little ground floor flat is right next to the street. Pretty often, people will walk past and sometimes hang around outside with one of these awful BT speakers, usually blearing the very LATEST in "DnB". I got totally fed up with this and decided to create an "audio clean zone" by building a BT jammer. I googled and googled. I downloaded datasheets for BT transcievers. I read and read all I could find and came to the conclusion that it would be very difficult to put a BT jammer together because of the frequency hopping feature. What have you seen that leads you to think that BT would be easy to jam? Is there some resource I could go and look at?

Yes, the "mission critical" accessories for APX have additional bluetooth encryption and near field pairing handshake. The "operations critical" accessories for MotoTrbo not so much. And either of those variants of the pod look identical except for the blue dot on the APX version. Internally, they are different firmware. I've bought a few of these pods over the years for the APX and it's annoying when you get the wrong one from the seller. That happened at least once and the MotoTrbo version wouldn't near field pair with APX. There is also a slight delay going over bluetooth to the radio and then over the air.

I am still confused by this thing. It’s not covert enough that it doesn’t look like a 2-way radio, and it’s not a lot smaller than other APXs. But it’s still cool and I’ll think about getting one and have been for years.

@@charlie_nolan as many concealed carriers know, measurements that seem insignificant are often critical in certain circumstances. In this case, it’s not something that is completely “covert” but it admittedly is smaller than an APX8000 and could fit under a dress coat a bit better. I see some folks raising concern about Bluetooth on these devices. I'm a computer scientist that does a lot of work with wireless signals - I can share why it's not an issue. First, Bluetooth, on it's own, has a level of security through obfuscation, as each packet is sent on a "slot", or channel, and these bounce around in a pre-determined order agreed to by the paired devices. It's very difficult (although, certainly not impossible) to track. Second, Bluetooth on it's own offers 2 different security modes and 4 different levels of encryption in its standard: Level 1 - (no encryption) Level 2 - AES-CMAC encryption for unpaired comms (wouldn't apply to this) Level 3 - AES-CMAC encryption for paired comms (this is extremely similar to the encryption used on government internet communications, with the added benefit of the packet jumping described, above) Level 4 - ECDHE (Diffie-Hellman Ephemeral) encryption replaces AES-CMAC Each packet is encrypted using a random number (seed), the slot number, a shared encryption key, and the device address. So a hacker would have to break each and every packet, separately, in real-time, as they are each uniquely encrypted (the slot and seed change with each packet broadcast, changing channels at a rate of 1,600 hops per second). There are certainly man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks that can occur, such as Key Negotiation of Bluetooth (KNOB) attacks, where nefarious agents can intercept the process of devices _exchanging_ cryptographic keys to establish a secure connection, telling the devices to use a weak (1-byte) encryption key. Then the hacker can brute-force attack the encryption and watch the traffic. This is easy to prevent, though, by ensuring a minimum of 7-octets of data be used for the key when establishing the secure connection. On top of that, the data within each packet of information is further-encrypted, so that if the Bluetooth cipher fails or ends up with a zero-day attack, the information is still secure (I'll share my sources on this in a moment). Because of this, even if there ever is a zero-day attack in the Bluetooth algorithm that breaks its security, the data will still be encrypted. The other thing I've seen mentioned is that "Bluetooth encryption isn't enabled by default." That may be true for consumer devices, but certainly not for these. As for my sources - these devices (and all federal encryption for data in transit) is controlled by NIST SP 800-171. Or, more specifically, the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2. This requires AES-128 be used both within the packet and at the module level. Manufacturers like Motorola will be part of the NIST Cryptographic Algorithm Validation Program (CAVP) which certifies these devices. Feel free to Google those if you want to geek out more, or feel free to ask me any questions!

@@AdventureCruiser I don’t think there is, but what I mean is why didn’t they just use an already existing chassis and put P25 guts in it, or make a new product line for a physically smaller line of public safety radios? I know there isn’t a ton of demand there but I feel there would be more than just this singular model, I’ve had customers buy fleets of small handhelds for law enforcement and EMS etc

Im not hating by any means but would like to make a couple points. The XPR is a sub $1K commercial radio, the VP8K is inherently a mission critical radio (that will do DMR) that is $4K+... The audio should be better, its apples to oranges. Kenwood is a little misleading with perpetual licenses, only certain licenses are actually perpetual, P25 conventional and P25 P1 ARE perpetual. P25 P2, DMR T2, DMR T3, purchased frequency bands, and multiple others AREN'T perpetual, and until they recoup the money that it took to develop these, they won't be perpetual. I do agree that JVC should add ENTER as a soft button it would simplify things in the menu. Also remember that JVC isn't catering to or entertaining the hobbyist that wants to NAS, and while unfortunate, I understand why they elected to go this route. To even add a trunking system you need a SKF for the NX5000 and a AKEY for the Viking line and unlike MOTO, there isn't a system key generator for either in the wild.

TRBO radios in general are budget radios sold at a fairly high price for what you actually get. Pricing between a VP5000 and R7 is shockingly close. The Select/Enter soft button feature was implemented in firmware revision 8.42. I find myself mostly using the menu/enter key, but you now have the option.

@@Porty1119 I know the R7 got a complete overhaul, (ive got a demo with one of the RM780 microphones and I like the feel of both) but in doing so it's not so budget friendly anymore.

I thought the earpieces were induction neck ring rigs. As they are a bit more simple and secure than BT normally is.

I wrote another comment on the top of the thread explaining why this is a misconception about Bluetooth, if you're curious, explaining how it is actually more secure than normal government encryption for internet communications and the NIST standards that control certification of devices like this.

If you think the Kenwood is clunky now, throw the high capacity battery on it. I have big hands and I find it difficult to press the PTT with the bigger battery on it.

I believe these are signs so that if someone does decide to give one to an adversary they can change settings on every radio such that that radio is now disconnected from the system and a lack of buttons makes it significantly harder to try and reconnect things
