      GNOME 47’s apps are already entering Debian 13(testing)’s main repository, and the kernel is at 6.10.9 as of now, so it’s looking like Debian 13 will bring the Debian desktop much more up-to-date when it launches next year - probably bringing many more users to Debian in the process.

    I'm gonna leave this comment here If you just got started with something new, don't try to make it feel like the old thing you used to be using (pun unintended), give it a few weeks, try to get used to it, you will find it easier to use the new thing the way it wants you to use, I myself tried so hard, for the last few months, to make the most Windows experience on my Linux Distro, I tried to make all the windows apps I had to work, I tried to match the theme and workflow, but I never got any of my important work finished on Linux, because I was too busy trying to force it to be something else, but then I started getting used to Linux apps, and felt so much better and productive leaving the past behind me, it surely can suck sometimes, but you can proceed into the future if you don't let your past go into the past, work smarter, not harder! have a nice computer experience <3 <3 <3

    I hate the Desktop Debian uses. Maybe hate is not a strong enough term. I prefer the Xfce, by quite a wide margin. The OS and its controls should stay out of the way. It should never be the center attraction or the whole show. Yeah, I know programmers like to be the focal point but you guys should know better. Let the end users decide every point of the interface. The biggest error is the was the whole desktop is consumed for every little choice. Really, who else would be so in love with their own work? Hide it. We don't get a computer so we can fiddle with to OS. And when I say hide it, I don't mean behind a lot of jargon. Make context sensitive submenus (like right click) control most things. What's wrong with calling an app by what it does like file manager instead of Thunar? Get all those geeky clever names out of there. Call it mail instead of Thunderbird. Yes, I know Xfce does many of the same showoffy things, but the worst case is the Debian desktop. The worst!

    I use a macbook pro 2012 with 8/500 SSD. I have installed mint but it was impossible to manage correctly the screen light control. The B43 firmware of the wifi card was correctly installed. I had lags and the user experience was not as I wanted. I returned on debian 12. After a few tweaks (I had to connect the computer with my phone)first in USB for connecting the internet) everything was ok....It works fluently so in my opinion take the model and not the copy. It's a "little" bit more difficult to install but the result is excellent

    You dont think it's worth partitioning a SWAP drive for Linux? Separate /var /tmp and everything else is probably an archaic practice anymore, but /SWAP feels more important, especially with two different OSs working off of the same RAM. Windows loves to suspend sessions to RAM, too. You could turn that off, but again, it's just playing it safe. I wouldn't want to risk crashing due to lack of memory and end up risking both systems at the same time.

  • @GR8APE69
    @GR8APE69 23 дні тому

    If you're gonna dual boot using an already established drive, I'd recommend first defragmenting the drive, then using a format and partition tool to go ahead and make an exfat partition. Then run your installer. That partition will pop up as its own deive, which you can then choose for Debian 12. You dont want to partition a fragmented drive, nor do you want two different bootloaders on the same physical partition. Linux makes great use of logical partitions, but your boot drive requires its own ~500MB physical partition, and it's simply better to play it safe when you're risking your boot drive and data. It's probably not necessary, but its just making double sure something doesn't break by first partitioning it on your Wimdows side with exfat, then partitioning that exact same exfat partition on the linux side with ext4 or whatever you want. You could even leave it as exfat and then partition 500MB - 1GB for your boot drive with the ext2 format. Windows is not capable of detecting ext formats natively, so that would protect your linux boot. Windows uses NTFS for boot drives by default, and NTFS is read-only on linux, so your Wimdows boot will be safe. You could have your data storage partitions for both Linux and Windows formatted with exFat, and then be able to share files between OSs with both read and write functionality on Linux and Windows, but only for files. Both of your boot drives would be protected from each other. Idk if Windows can take advantage of LVM or if you can use exFat to make an LVM, but how fucking cool would it be to have your physical boot drives at the beginning and end of the drive and a big, sharable LVM between them for both OSs to use. Idk if that's possible, but it'd be sick. Or use two separate drives with a boot drive partitioned on each, and then the rest of both drives combined into a singular LVM. Or split an NVMe to boot both and then have a massive RAID 10 LVM that both share for storage. Idk if that's possible either, but I'm about to go fill my eBay cart.
