Into the Alpine Wilderness: Sierra Nevada Backpacking Journey (Part 2)
The 4-day backpacking adventure continues as we leave the dense forest behind and ascend into the breathtaking alpine region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where stunning views and high-altitude lakes await.
To keep the adventures going, please consider buying me a coffee, becoming a member, or helping me fulfill my wishlist :) www.buymeacoffee.com/adventuresandreams
In this part of our 4-day backpacking adventure, we hike deeper into the alpine region of the Sierra Nevada on the Cottonwood Lakes Trail. We reach the secluded Muir Lake, nestled high in the mountains, and set up camp surrounded by stunning scenery. As we settle into the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Mid 1 tent, a light rain turns into a downpour, adding a peaceful ambiance to our evening in the wilderness. Despite the weather, the beauty of the surroundings shines through, making for a serene night under the alpine sky. The next morning, a piercing blue sky welcomes us, promising another amazing day in this remote paradise. Join me as I explore this breathtaking landscape, share trail stories, and embrace the joy of being immersed in nature.

      Hi, thanks for watching! Yeah, this tent is a palace AND fortress. I trust it in any weather, and if you would like to see it in snow storms and other winter weather, I have a whole playlist just for that :) ua-cam.com/play/PLlizgcc7ctqvMUoIiye1lCtgq2pwpDKhP.html The tent costs almost $1200 (US Dollars) and is over 6 lb (over 3 kg) heavy + the footprint and pegs. It's heavy, and I've used a sled for some of my adventures to make it easier. hilleberg.com/eng/products/tents/2-person

      @@tonesmith909 Haha, yeah, it sure is an investment. I think it was a bit cheaper when I bought it back in 2018. Just think about it this way: it's a tent for life! If you follow Hilleberg a bit and see their posts, you will see that they show tents in use from 30+ years ago. I may have to replace the cord inside the tent poles at some point, but otherwise, this tent will last. I would also like to buy the Soulo soon, but I lack the funding for now. But thanks so much for watching the entire series. Those were the very first videos I put on my channel. It makes me so happy that people like you still find them useful and comment on them. It makes my day! :)

    Wow, the rocky, rugged coast was beautiful! I've never camped by the ocean before. I like places where the forest comes to the edge of the water. So nice! PS: There is a way to erect a double walled tent in the rain by putting up the fly first, then getting underneath to attach the inner tent. It's a bit awkward, but doable. However, I know you're now using a lighter, single wall tent.

      Thank you so much for heading over to this video to check it out. I'm glad you liked it. Yes, this location was super special, and many of the campsites were near the water. I think it's pretty busy there on sunny days, but this was the Easter weekend with storms and rain, so I had the trail to myself. I tried one time to set up the rainfly first and then the inner tent, but it was so hard. I always wanted to do that again and film it, though. I really should. It would be a good skill to have. I will still use this tent if the hike is less strenuous or if I go canoe camping. I love this tent, but the lighter one makes more sense in the mountains. I still want to get a lighter winter tent as well. My Hilleberg tent is very spacious but incredibly heavy. I have carried it a couple of times, but it works best with the sled. I have several winter camping trips on my channel, too, if you want to check them out. :) Thank you again for watching and for your support! I hope to see your comments again sometime. :)

      Oh! I was reading another comment above yours and was still thinking about it when I replied to you. I'm so sorry! :D It's so great to read from people that they've been there before, but you're going there soon! You will love it. You'll be there while I'm working on the last part of this series, and by the time you get back, you might recognize quite a few places, but your hike over Duck Pass will be the real adventure. I would love to do this eventually, perhaps after the winter. I still need to build up some endurance for longer trips like this. 40 miles is quite a bit. Of course, everything takes me longer because of all the filming, but I wouldn't want it any other way. Reading comments like yours make the effort worth it. Well, thanks for watching, and sorry again about the mix up with another comment. I will respond to that person now. :) See you in my last episode, but in the meantime, have an amazing adventure. Perhaps you'll let me know leter how it went. I would love to hear from you.

    Great review, I needed to brush up on its use as I havent used it in years but Im going on a back country hunting trip with my boys and a friend and this will be our go to filter. This thing is a work of art and will indeed last a lifetime. We have plastic filters but I trust this one the most. “Its heavy, but the weight is sign of reliability” -Boris

      Thank you so much! Yeah, this filter is unbeatable. I filtered very murky water on a backpacking trip with it, and it's the only filter I would trust with water like that. Because of the weight, I no longer take it with me, unfortunately, but it will serve you well, especially since you have a few people. It filters water so fast! Have a great trip. I'm glad my video helped you to remember how everything works. :)

    I was over on Facebook and saw your post about this trip and followed the link to UA-cam. I posed a couple of questions on your FB post only to see them answered here.😊 Before you went on your trip I'm the one who shared with you about using my Ursack at Cottonwood Lakes a couple of weeks before your trip. I'm happy to see you, too, had a good experience with your Ursack there. It's such a good feeling to wake up the next day and see that it was left undisturbed!😂 And I was really glad to see you work hard to get the mouth closed, it's a piece of work to do so, but so needful. I'm glad to see your experience with the Goal Zero solar panel. I'm seriously thinking of getting one for the same reasons you mentioned. I hate the added weight, but some things are just worth it. I'm curious what your pack weight is, without water or fanny pack. Mine currently weighs in at 23 lbs, but I think by redoing a couple of things I can get it down to 21. I'd ultimately like to get it down to 19-20 lbs, it would be so much nicer to carry. Thanks for sharing your trip, I enjoyed watching. PS: I can relate to sleeping in the car at Cottonwood Lakes trailhead. Not the most comfortable experience, but it's nice to be able to do so when necessary. However, now that I'm retired I go up three days early to acclimate which I'm finding to be very helpful after coming from sea level.

    • @adventuresandreams
      @adventuresandreams 9 днів тому

      It's so great to see your comment in my video, Ronnette! I really appreciate it, also your Ursack comment a few weeks ago. You convinced me to use it instead of buying a bear canister, and I'm so glad that I took it. I've had it for five or six years now, and never had a problem with it. A friend of mine watched my video and offered me her somewhat smaller bear canister after her upcoming trip. She will no longer need it and wants to gift it to me. That is so kind, and if I ever make my way into a National Park, I will surely use it. You asked about the pack weight. I wish I could tell you, but I never checked it. I should do so for my next trip, and I'll let you know. But I have to say, my new tent, the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Mid 1, has made a HUGE difference in weight. It's 1/4 of my previous 2-person tent. It weighs only 16 ounces + the tent stakes. I don't know what gear you have and if you could deal with a somewhat more primitive tent setup, but it's so worth it for the size and weight difference. Now to the Goal Zero. I truly can't recommend it enough. It's very lightweight, and I would consider taking a smaller power bank if I had one because I can charge it all day. It works surprisingly well in the tent and on cloudy days. You'll see more of that in my next Sierra video if you want to watch it. If you want to find out a bit more about the Goal Zero, you can check out my review here. I was on a multi-day canoe camping trip and filmed the review with many great shots of the camping trip itself. I think you would enjoy it :) ua-cam.com/video/el6GeOFCn0Y/v-deo.html Also, I admire you for going up to the mountains days before your actual trip! That's so amazing. My husband needs the car three days a week, so the earliest I can drive there from Irvine is Wednesday evenings. That gives me just one night to get used to the elevation, but thankfully, I had no problems at all on my last trip. It surprised me, and I'm ready for a slightly more challenging route next time. I'll be sure to ask for recommendations in the FB group again, or do you have any? Anyway, thank you again for your comments here and in the FB group! I hope to hear from you again soon, Ronnette :)

      It's good to see your name here again. Thanks for watching. The tent did really well, although it took a bit of getting used to the slanted walls on all but one side. There is tons of space, though. You just have to plan ahead a bit. After a couple of nights, I set it up even better to have more room. I filmed a super detailed review and setup guide for it that might be interesting for you. I'll be working on those videos after the trip videos :) If you didn't see it, I have a link at the top of the description that goes to a blog post describing my adventurous drive to the parking lot. Ich habe mich für diesen trip echt bemüht, mein Rucksackgewicht so gering wie möglich zu halten, und es hat geklappt. Ein paar Sachen will ich immer noch kaufen, vor allem einen neuen Rucksack und eine Daunendecke. Da würde ich auch noch mal einiges an Gewicht sparen. Thanks for making this video. I just got a katadyn pocket filter also but the water that is coming out from running already filtered tap water theough it has a very strong unpleasant chemical-like smell and is extremely bubbly (it has no smell before going through the katadyn filter). I've cleaned it thoroughly and applied lubricant to the threads but no change. It seems like the smell dissipates somewhat if I let the filtered water sit out afterwards but I don't feel comfortable drinking the water that comes out of this because of how strong the smell it adds to the water is. Have you encountered this issue?

    • @adventuresandreams
      @adventuresandreams 18 днів тому

      Hi there, thank you so much for watching my video. The issue you describe is new to me, the smell at least. I have encountered bubbles in the past from pressing the water through the filter. I don't want to give you any wrong answers, so I will contact Katadyn for you and find out about it. It's a good thing for me to learn as well. They are pretty fast in responding. Perhaps you can hold off on using the filter for a couple of days while I get the answer for you? I hope your filter is ok, but if it's a new one and the ceramic element is faulty, they will replace it for sure. If you find out about it before I get back to you, please let me know here as well. I am currious about this issue for sure.

    • @adventuresandreams
      @adventuresandreams 17 днів тому

      Hello again, I already heard back from Katadyn, and this is what they wrote: "Thank you for your email. We have not received complaints of a chemical odor from the Pocket. The Pocket is only to be cleaned with water and no cleaning solutions or soap. If cleaners are used, they could be absorbed into the filter and that could be the cause of the chemical odor. That is just a guess. The customer might want to try soaking it in 1 tbs of household vinegar to 1 liter of water. Perhaps that might remove the taste. " Please let me know if the vinegar helps. Good luck, Andrea

      @@adventuresandreams Hi, thanks for your reply. I was planning to contact them also if I couldn't find anything else out online otherwise but.. just to clarify, the smell I was getting is on the first use, after cleaning with only water and nothing else. Ha, thanks for watching! You are right. The weight difference is ridiculous, and I will only take the bigger tents when I'm canoe camping or perhaps car camping out in the dessert or so. Otherwise there is no reason to take so much extra weight! I just came back from my 4-day backpacking trip yesterday, and I have to say that the much smaller space took a little time to adjust to, and It was "raining" condensation in it one morning, but otherwise the tent was great. I think this filter is super useful in some situations, but definitely not all. I took it backpacking one time, and the weight was just too much for that. I'll take my BeFree filter any day with my backpack, though. But when the water is super dirty, I would trust this filter more than any other, and it lasts forever. I think it could be useful for off-grid living and very long tours, also canoe camping where weight doesn't play as much of a role. What did you buy it for? I'm currious! When you assemble the contents, do it like this... Stand first, exactly as you did. Then burner facing downwards. Then gas can, bottom side down. If you use it, you can put the extra pot stand last, with legs downwards. The reason for doing it this way is it protects the Piezo igniter and prevents the ceramic shield from cracking, which can cause the igniter to fail. If you assemble in this way, the igniter does not come into contact with anything and is protected by the canister stand.

Your video on the Hilleberg Nammatj 2GT popped up in my recommended videos, as I was considering purchasing the tent (and now have) and was looking to see someone actually assemble it in adverse conditions. I'm planning a southbound Appalachian trail hike soon and was concerned my current tent might be up to the task if weather was consistently bad. Maybe one day I actually make it, or parts of the PCT, which I'm much closer to now. Yes, I've learned so much watching other people's videos, and also from the comments that I receive on my videos. Did you read them all? I believe that one person had the best tip for the ice-bound stakes. They suggested to hit them with a rock or hammer to break that bond. What an amazing idea, which would have helped me instead of taking the risk of abendoning them. Well, I wish an increadible adventure. You cannot go wrong with the Nammatj 2GT, although I would consider it quite heavy for such a long track. It will absolutely keep you warm and safe, though.
