    Well it was enough to tame my strat on high gain. My EVH iconic combo amp already has an inbuilt noise gate for its high gain channel but it doesn't have it for the clean and overdrive channel. It is a cheap one for sure but the material being solid metal and its aesthetics make up for everything it lacks. Surely, it won't work very well for death metal

    Hey guys, enjoyed your video and just got an Iron Curtain Noise Gate pedal by tc electronics. I use a metal distortion pedal and have problems with sound coming from either amplifier or guitar. I was suggested to get a " Noise gate" pedal. I tried it out quickly as I didn't have the time to keep messing with it. What can you suggest for using this pedal correctly along with the Metal Zone MT-2 Boss pedal? I'm not sure what will eliminate all unwanted noise and how to adjust the Threshhold and Decay knobs so they will eliminate the hum coming from amp.

    • @TheBluesBox
      @TheBluesBox 4 місяці тому

      Hi, thank you for the positive comment, much appreciated. It really depends on the source of the noise. I’ll come back to that. In most, but not all, the noise gate goes after drive type pedals but before modulation and delay etc. That can catch most things. Always worth experimenting though where exactly in the drive section it goes. The noise from the amp could be from your pick ups but could also be from the mains power. Hum can often be house wiring related. So you need to start there and work backwards. If you’re into metal I’m going to guess your using humbuckers? If not single could and, within that group, P90’s give a lot of noise possibilities. If you think it’s definitely the pick ups as a source of the hum. It’s then down to your position near the amp and other gear, but also setting your noise gate correctly. By the way, we get hum off one of the lights in the studio! So it can come from lots of sources. Turn off that light and the hum stops! So Threshold is when the gate kicks in, decay is how subtle or not the gate is when it kicks in. Set the decay low/fast and then hit a string and play with the threshold to hear when it cuts out the signal. Once you’re happy with that use the decay to tune how the gate closes (basically quick or fast). While you’re playing you won’t hear the hum, and the gate will closed at your settings to kill the signal from your guitar at low volumes so you don’t hear pick up based hum. If your gate kicks in and you still hear hum, then the problem is elsewhere and you need to do a bit of experimenting to find out what it is. We’ve got a viewer in India and he cannot get rid of the hum whatever he does as the mains power itself is the issue. The amp hums without anything plugged in! Hope that helps. All the best.

      @@TheBluesBox Hi, thanks for getting back to me!!! The possibility of many sources of sound is problematic and where to pinpoint it. My guitar has two single coil pickups and a humbucker on bottom. I guess I'll just have to keep messing with it to get rid of the hum from the amp; if that's where it's coming from. I appreciate your response to my question!!

      Do you mean the Harley Benton ones? If so, they do promise isolated supplies and they’ve done some decent stuff. They look similar but there’s no way to tell what’s inside even if outside is similar. If they were identical (screw position, vents, switches) then maybe, but not sure I’d go completely budget on the PSU if I’ve got a bunch of expensive pedals, but if they’re more budget pedals I’d be very tempted. We need to find someone who can tear these things down properly and give us the full details.

    I totally agree regarding the Fender Noiseless pickups. I just don’t feel inspired. In fact the other day I picked up a Player Strat which has ‘noisy’ pickups and I was surprised by its tone. I really enjoyed playing it. Ideally I would love a Nashville Tele but they currently have the noiseless pickups and the one I tried again didn’t get me excited. Time to try the Eastsider S… PS a really cool cheaper alternative is the Squire Paranormal Nashville. That surprised me too and with a pick up upgrade would go from a great guitar to a fantastic and quirky alternative that would knock the spots of the current MIM Nashville!

      Hi, it is a great riff isn’t it. I almost always have my Fender Bass-breaker on the mid gain channel with the gain around 3/4, just feel it allows me to get a fairly clean tone if I want, or more dirt if I dig in. That’s a real shame. I hope that’s not a sign of things to come from them. Always disappoints me when a music retailer doesn’t check over stuff before it goes out though. I now run a small effects pedal online only - for now - shop and everything is checked before it’s sent. No way I’m sending out something I don’t know works properly. Is that a rosewood (or similar) board? Can you not take that up with the retailer? I have to say every Rev we’ve tried has been very good.

  • @Jager_sog9
    @Jager_sog9 11 місяців тому

    I've just bought it and it seems that it distorts the signal... I'm playing with some gain and that's good and everything works as intended... But when I roll down the volume for a clean part, the sound still comes out distorted... I switch it off and it disappears... Quite a noise gate, to let the noise in!

    • @TheBluesBox

      Where have you got the pedal in your signal chain? Have you tried just that pedal alone? If you have and that still happens it sounds like an issue with that particular pedal maybe. A mate uses one in a studio and no issues like you mention.

    I live in INDIA and here it costs 65 ish dollars but every other reputable pedal costs around 120 plus dollars also I run Boss DS 1X currently I can only use gain at 7 30 clock-ish where the hummage is absent beyond that my signal gets off and the noise kills the music significantly. I am a novice player looking to reduce noise for HOME practice , Also considering that I can get both (JOYO FUzz with octave up function) in 100bucks if I stick with the IRON GATE . rather than any other noise gate in the market Its asthetics did sway me a lil, truth be said Behringer was a good choice but This aint going anywhere for years and I guess it ll reseel in the future which the Behringer one I am not so sure. The price is just right and function is just tight IT will do the thing, I basically use my distortion like an overdrive , along with just enough amp gain to drive the cean vol. I run a Stereo setup with 1 yamha amp and other a 2.1 hometheater with vox amplug as an amp. Its a crazy budget home rig. Its just the tweaking from the amps takes a bit of time to setup once but the subwoofer adds ton of lowss to the low notes and yamaha amp add good cleanish driven sounds. overall I think the GATE will deliver for my use case scenario.

    Nice video - and yes Edward Van Halen plugged his amps into a Variac - then into the wall. Ed dropped the voltage to around 90v with the Variac to create a "brown sound" as he described.

    No offense, but the amount of UA-camrs not getting it is phenomenal... A "blue" overdrive is a Blues Breaker. A popular purple BB pedal which has a royal name is the King/Prince of Tone. And that's what the name refers to.

    • @TheBluesBox
      @TheBluesBox Рік тому

      No offence taken 🙂 never thought it was a blues breaker tone to be honest, but a good note on the King of Tone pedal. What we do know is this is a cracking overdrive… cheers… 👍🙂

      The Royal Blue has nothing to do with the bluesBREAKER it is more a bluesDRIVER (which is a completely different pedal). It is some kind of mixture between a timmy and a bluesdriver. It is way more dynamic than a king of tone oder any other bluesBREAKER style pedal.

    I'm really hoping that Reverend makes this tele-style with the 3-p90's pickups (like they do with their jetstreams) to cut back on the harshness and make it more for Rock and/or Jazz. Good review. Thanks.

      That’s a bold call 🙂, there are so many variations in the Fender stable, but if it’s made you think about other manufacturers and the quality out there then that’s great. All the best in your search… what do you think you’re after? I still can’t shake the need for the vintage Strat sound that I can’t quite find anywhere else…

      Yes I am with you. As a player I reckon everytime I feel like I can dig in the sound and get as much reaction from the guitar as I want. That's why I cherish my Revs as much as I do (I own 4 : Buckshot, Airsonic RA, Warhawk RT, Crosscut).

    • @TheBluesBox
      @TheBluesBox Рік тому

      Yeah, I know what you mean. I’d say a lot of blues players though are pretty conservative with the tone, always chasing that vintage tone, but I do love hearing new takes on stuff so changing your tone can definitely be part of that… cheers for the comments and watching.

    Reverend uses jumbo frets. Hard pass. You hardly feel the fretboard, and if you do the note will go sharp. It's a shame because I was about to buy a sensei ra but then tried it out and nope.

    • @TheBluesBox
      @TheBluesBox Рік тому

      Have to say I’ve never had issues with notes being sharp in my Rev Charger. Maybe you’re putting a little too much pressure on the strings when fretting…?But this is why all sorts of fret sizes, neck radius, nut widths, and a billion other variable still exist and we’re not all playing the same ‘perfect’ guitar, because it’s personal and just what suits. So important to try stuff out in a shop if possible and get to know what you like. Thanks for the comment, I’m still looking for a vintage strat sound that isn’t a strat! Not sure it has or will ever exist… Cheers

      @@TheBluesBoxNot really:) Original old USA made versions goes around 300-600 usd :) I bought RAT2 for 250 which is kinda great price for this now

    • @TheBluesBox
      @TheBluesBox Рік тому

      @@i.shadrinwell yeah, an original is not maybe in the value-for-money bracket, that’s for sure 😅 The reissues from ‘91 are sought after also but cheaper at £160-200-ish. They have the chip everyone seems to want. But the new pedals are good value, though some swear by that older chip… I like the new ones, and the space saving Lil’ Rat… Thanks for the view and comment 👍
