      Rick thanks for asking..... Well here goes....I went back to trade school in 2008 time frame. Got in the welding program and learned the basics on all 4 processes. I leaned towards "Tig Welding" the most because it's what I truly wanted to learn going into the program. On the last day of my first semester. You know the day you never really go too. lol well I did and my teacher pulled me aside and handed me a business card to a local shop that did bench work and did on the job training with the opportunity to get my welding certification. This job was crazy. It was welding BIG Thick wall tubing to mounting plates. They got tacked then placed in a oven at 400° for 30mins before taking them out and giving it every bit of 300Amps of AC goodness. Pay sucked....lol I looked at it as the opportunity it was. I got my AC weld cert and my copper(boy that's a crazy metal that turns instantly black and mush) then bounced to my next job. There it was a more bench welding aluminum this time it was the complete opposite I was welding thin .030 wall aluminum gussets to some tubes. This job got interesting once I was told I got put on piece count. That meant for ever piece I welded I got $1. So I'd set up early and weld late. Then after about 9 months at that place I got a call that my current job Honeywell was hiring to come in for a visual weld to see if I even cut the mustard. Well in September I'll be here 10 years and I've also been doing my own side business/hustle @latenitefab I'm starting to post more on TikTok and Instagram aswell as FB business @latenitefab Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions. My point in laying out my career is because I feel I don't have the proper answer for one of your original questions about how long did it take to get this good? It takes hardwork and dedication to try and master a craft. I don't feel I've mastered it yet because I'm still learning from time to time. I've just put in ALOT MORE WORK then most people I know in the same amount of time period. Hope that paints a picture of "How long"....lol take care thanks for reading. Oh and during all of that madness I was also fabricating and welding on a dragster I use to race for Revmaster. I welded and fabricated alot during that time aswell in the beginning half of my welding adventures....lol There's a couple cool videos floating around of us during that time.

    Hey Chad , any chance you can explain your exact torch movement/filler rod placement for a noob? Are you angling the torch towards the pipe or the flange (or middle of both?) and when you dip the electrode, do you dip into the middle of the puddle or the leading edge? Been working on improving my stainless TIG so that info would help me out a lot. Thanks for the awesome video, that may be the nicest stainless weld I’ve ever seen haha

    • @latenitefab
      @latenitefab 2 роки тому

      Hope this helps you some. When welding 2 different thicknesses of metal (thick flange to a .065 wall I like to still focus on the filet part of the weld but favor the thicker piece because it naturally takes more heat to melt then the .065. general rule on torch angle for a fillet weld is still the same or else the weld bead with start to look like a moon shape vs a "C" shape if that makes sense. Then I look at the puddle and when it's a molten puddle I add rod different angles at times but for the most part on these flanges I tend to do leading edge rod fill and slightly lower h=kind of like I'm pushing the puddle up to catch the thinner material. once the puddle is molten use your peddle to control the "width" of it. I like running my amps a little higher on the amperage but a general rule I like to use and tell others is whatever the thickness you're welding you should be about that on your amperage setting. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. Thanks for the compliment. Check out my IG @latenitefab for more videos and pictures. Hope that helps some and makes sense

    • @latenitefab
      @latenitefab 2 роки тому

      On Vbands like this I usually set my machine at about 50-60amps and point the tungsten towards the thicker flange. On tube to tube I'd lower it to about 40amps and I always run my machine higher so I control the puddle by the look and wash out of it. Let me know if that makes sense...lol check my IG @latenitefab I'm working on a 3" exhaust right now I'm planning on doing a video.

      Koji. On this setup and exhaust stuff I use a 1/16 tungsten with a gas lense. I like to use a champagne cup on stainless but didn't have one. You get alot more gas coverage with that cup. The filler rod is .045 feeding into the puddle and watching it washout then moving forward. A could trick to get in your head when adding filler rod is count 1,2 1,2 as you move the torch. It helps you creat a more uniformed weld. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions. I should really start doing more videos I just need to find the time.

    can you also do that inside the ring?

    • @latenitefab
      @latenitefab 4 роки тому

      Marvin. How's it going? I'm not sure I understand your question? Do you mean like weld the inside pipe to the clamp aswell? If so then yes you can. The only issue you'd run into is the lack of backing gas. I have a couple different "purge blocks" to put argon behind welds. Does that answer your question?

      @@latenitefab i am not a welder but i got the idear to put v band bevor and after a muffler pretty close and i think you can not get beetwim clamp an muffler so just weld it inside

      @@marvinroth263 yes. You can weld it from the inside.

    what angle do you cut the tube to make the 4x1?

    • @latenitefab
      @latenitefab 4 роки тому

      This collector was purchased by the customer. I believe it was a burns stainless collector. Collectors are cut at different angles so it would depend on your application if you wanted to build one from scratch.

    Hey, how do you weld these on 60 Amps ? If i do this with my welder on 60 Amps the metal gets glowing hot in seconds...

    • @latenitefab
      @latenitefab 4 роки тому

      I have the machine set at 60amps because I'm welding a thicker flange to a thinner tube. I like to weld with my machine settings a little higher to get a good puddle fast and then I back off my pedal (say 30 amps so my pedal would be about halfway down) It's also purged on the backside at 15cfh and I'm running my argon out of my torch at 45cfh. Hope that gives you some help or better understanding. Let me know if you got any other questions

    Nice. I really want to do work like this once I get better. I haven't done any stainless welding with my powertig yet.

      Gas coverage and purging the backside on stainless is probably the most important.

    Thanks for the video. I really can't wait until I do some stainless welding with my everlast tig welder.

      Let me know if you ever have any questions. If you got a welder at home or in a shop. I'd say get in as much practice as you can. The more you do the better you'll understand it. Good luck and have fun
