Are Survive! Knives claims about CPM Magnacut legit?
Переглядів 19 тис.4 місяці тому
This is a dive into my experience with Magnacut as compared to Survives issues. Here is a statement from Niagra- In case you were wanting to hear our side of the story: Niagara Specialty Metals (NSM) has processed over 600,000 pounds of CPM MagnaCut since its inception in 2020. From October 2021 until January 2023 NSM has sold or given Survive Knives 1,240 pounds of MagnaCut. Survive complained...

To my knowledge, the technique was shown by Murrey Carter, and I believe he learned it from Japanese master smiths. An upcoming project for Creely Blades. The first knives I made her kitchen knives, and I still most enjoy kitchen knives. This is an idea born of my RV actually, a petty sized knife but with a chefs knife broad blade. Perfect for small counter spaces, or food prep on the run. These will be in CPM Magnacut. I hope to have a few of them available at blade show 2022.

      I’ve made tons of blades w magnacut and he is waaay overstating the issues w the steel. He just needs to learn to surface grind better. I could have made those turn out just fine. You need people in house who know how to use a grinder. I’m not saying they don’t but it seems him giving up on those blades says different.

    I believe Bradford Knives put it best: MagnaCut is a dream for the end user and a nightmare for the manufacturer, especially in the 62+ HRC range. If Survive! can't get their manufacturing right it's hardly the steel's fault tho. If you can't work with it how about you don't use it?

He is only guilty of trusting others to do their dam job, or deliver the product/process purchased. Been seeing this issue more and more over the years, pay for premium and get mediocer. There’s no new information. Niagra never said there was not some bad steel, and they offered to warranty it. if the issues were as widespread as survive, would like you to believe there’d be a lot more manufacturers speaking up who use a whole lot of the stuff.

      @@Creelyblades so explain why many sheets of the same steel as the same problem…I like magnacut. It’s good. But the way you talk shit about survive for showing the problem they have with it is freaking un professional. Both small companies from somewhat local place and your basically saying ther are laying to protect your ass cause your best selling knife is in that steel. You should just have let them deal with their problems and not go to the front back stabbing them

    • @Creelyblades
      @Creelyblades Місяць тому

      @@danygodbout979 Actually, my best-selling knife is in 8670 at the moment, I am not actually selling as much Magnacut these days. I am not protecting anything, I am offering a counter point to their perspective. I just think much of what Survive said about Maganacut was wrong, and they were conflating 3 different issues. 2 of the 3 were process issues (warping and decarb), and the decarb was the biggest loss, an issue that had nothing to do with it being Magnacut- any stainless would have decarbed in a similar fashion in a stress relieve cycle. As for the voids they have only shown a hand full of blades with that issue out of 1240lbs of steel. So to answer your first question there were not that many sheets of steel with that problem.

    • @danygodbout979

    • @Creelyblades
      @Creelyblades Місяць тому

      @@danygodbout979 well, the number of blades that they’ve shown with that issue is quite low. Even in this most recent video if you read between the lines 20% is a sort of made up number. niagra sold them 1200 pounds of steel and they’ve bought steel from other suppliers, let’s conservatively assume they have cycled 2000 pounds of Magna cut, which would be roughly about 4000 blades, and they’ve shown a dozen or so with voids. as I mentioned before, there’s no denying that they got some bad steel, I’m just saying it wasn’t that much. i’m really not trying to attack survive, I wish them well, and according to them, my video created a lot of sales for them. I suspect the entire drama with Magnacut and them sold more knives for them. I guess it’s the old adage there’s no such thing as bad press

    Great sportmansship to create a knife for JoeX's testing method and sending it to him. And where the Hultafors GK and Mora Robust did survive the test they did bend and your knife didn't even bend. I like that the cutout in the handle is really small leaving a lot of metal for handle strenght. The handle coming loose won't be an issue for me because for all my user knives I epoxy the handle scales and screws so nothing comes loose and no water can get between the scales and blank. As a long time survival instructor I would order this knife, if available, as a back up last resort knife. Of course I would also bring a thin stainless blade for food prep. Compared to the ESEE5 and BK2 this seems to be the better knife. The US military should contract you.

As You both are in Business and the name of the latest craze on the market is at stake it should be Your Responsibility to make sure everything is Right and Cosy, so that the masses of people buy Magnacut and pay hundreds of dollars for a knife instead of buying sensible stuff, therefore generate huge business. @@Creelyblades Its not about the price point. One can sell any product at any price. However, when a defect comes in a knife, a responsible person makes a responsible assessment pertaining to the market and the brand as whole. @@Creelyblades High tech metallurgy is high tech PROVIDED the manufacturing process is flawless. Otherwise, in my opinion it is just marketing. You have a product which is not up to par, it could be the F22 stealth fighter. Without fuel, it will sit on the ground. If the metallurgy process is there in theory but not in best practical terms, then yes. Let me put it this way. If I have a BMW that is leaking oil. Is it better than a Suzuki that has no problems? Depends on the practical case right? If the steel of the knife is faulty, i.e breaks because of certain processes left out or quality control, or any other bad luck, the knife cannot perform as intended, therefore the product is faulty and does not live up to the description, even if it is made of the latest hyper-duper, super steel. But you know what? Why should I lecture anybody about market economy in the US. Was just reading for fun and realized the fact that so many myths and dreams are just that.

    A different opinion of Chinese inverters, (VFD). I've got 5 or 6 Chinese VFDs. Drill press, Bandsaw, table saws, lathes etc. I have some, (admittedly Teco which is a decent brand) that I've used for over 10 years. Others, for 5 years or so, NO problems. Automation direct sells plenty to American industries. I find them pretty darn reliable. YES, you do want to keep VFD's away from lots of dust. You can achieve that by having them in an enclosure, but then folks think they can't control the VFD stop/start easily. MOST if not all VFD's allow for remote control. You CAN get remote keypads, but mostly I just have a remote Start / Stop switch. (like for my table saw where I don't generally change the speed, (except on my 16" blades, I sometimes do turn it down a bit). Anyway, "cheap Chinese" is not "bad" Chinese. In addition, while their manuals stink, they often have GREAT service centers that will help you thru all the problems. But great review by the way.
