HPQ 4 Trim Top
The final step is to trim your top for quilting. Unless you add the extension pieces to each row of a background fabric to retain the points and allow them to "float", you will more than likely trim the points off and square up your top. There are those who will finish those points and bind them to have the zig-zag finish, so that's always an option. Adding additional borders, even pieced borders, can be a lovely finish. Make it your own!

HPQ 2 Sewing Rows
Переглядів 2435 місяців тому
Once your rows are stitch, then it's time to sew them together into the long sections. Always match up the whole hexies to be sure the rows are in the right order. Place a pin close to the edge you plan to stitch so you don't mistakenly sew the wrong edge. Place a pin at each dog-ear intersection, making sure the dog-ears are lined up nicely. This will assure your center points of your hexies w...

Quilting orange peels in patchwork squares

Using my HandiQuilter Sweet Sixteen on the Insight table with regulated stitching on with cruise set at 16% and 11 SPI, in stitching orange peels in the red patches that create a chain diagonally across the quilt. By going across and back, I complete each diagonal chain in a continuous fashion. The 4" flag print blocks get curves in a similar manner that intersect at the center of the block.

The Magic of Making Half-Square Triangles with Triangulations
Переглядів 2972 роки тому
Using the printable foundations in the Triangulations PDF files you can make hundreds of half-square triangles in nearly any size you need very quickly. Instead of cutting squares, marking each one, sewing on both sides of the center line, cutting, pressing, and trimming, these foundations short cut that whole process! For my current project I made 600 HSTs and was assembling units in two days....

    I just got a 221 and it has the unmarked needle plate. However, it came with a screw-in metal guide. I purchased one of the seam gauge rulers with the holes for various seam allowances. I hope it will work well in placing the guide for a perfect scant 1/4" for piecing. I really don't want to use adhesives on the painted surface of the machine bed.

    How do know the size of the set in center?

    • @GypsyDreamerQuilts
      @GypsyDreamerQuilts 2 роки тому

      The set-in center can be any size you need. For this particular block it was a 4 1/2" square. Depending on what pattern you're using, the instructions will tell you what size to cut that center. I've even used this technique when sewing together random size blocks cut from t-shirts to get everything to fit. Once you know how to do it, you'll find places where this can be very handy!

    Why is it called a New York block?

    • @GypsyDreamerQuilts
      @GypsyDreamerQuilts 2 роки тому

      Excellent question! According to Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, "In 1907, Hearth & Home magazine asked readers to send blocks named after states, capital cities, and US territories." A photo or drawing was included and full size patterns were available to readers who mailed in a request with a coin or stamp.

    I have a vintage Kenmore (1949) rotary straight stitch. It has a perfect 1/4" foot, and feed dogs (the middle feed dog is in front of the needle) pull straight an true. Nicely designed. It is my favorite piecing machine. It also has a machined aluminum seam guide that provides a perfect gate. Do all other fancy tasks on my newer machines. This machine does one thing and does it well,

    • @GypsyDreamerQuilts
      @GypsyDreamerQuilts 3 роки тому

      HI Elle, That sounds like a wonderful machine! Many years ago my mom had a Kenmore, but it was replaced several times over the years. I wish some of those old machines had been stored away! The vintage machines last forever if taken care of. I believe the Featherweights also have an optional seam guide, but for now this works for me. :-) Our modern machines with multiple stitches & functions mostly sit in their cases unless we need a zig-zag or something special. :-)

    I use the Scott’s double sided mounting tape. It comes in many widths and I run it all the way across my machine. You can sew blindfolded...lol.

    • @GypsyDreamerQuilts
      @GypsyDreamerQuilts 3 роки тому

      We've used the mounting tape as well on our rulers! I like to have a piece of the molefoam padding and my husband likes the mounting tape as a guide on the bottom side of our triangle rulers when cutting the triangles for our Hexified Panel Quilts/One Block Wonders. I had not used it the machine, but will definitely keep it in mind, especially for my modern machines that are plastic. I like the molefoam for my vintage machine as I feel like/hope the adhesive that is engineered to be used on skin will be kinder to the finish on a Featherweight. :-) I like a longer guide as well, but usually not longer than the molefoam pad as it comes. :-)

    • @GypsyDreamerQuilts
      @GypsyDreamerQuilts 3 роки тому

      Hi Norma, as long as you have a closed foot for ruler work, you will be fine. I did purchase the Sure Foot, which is a little taller, so I'm less likely to let the foot jump over the ruler. It doesn't happen often, but can cause you to break a needle, chip the rule, and even throw your machine out of timing. ~Liz
