I actually thought that the reason the gems dance is to be on the same frequency. The gems are made of light and through different emotions probably go on different scales of a frequency something of the sort. But Dancing probably helps them synchronize enough to be able to fuse. Instead of rubies who are most likely always on the same frequency due to their very simple mindset. Sometimes just wanting to fuse cause they can is enough and their already at similar frequencies.

Say whatever you want they wanted pro gay not gender neutral friendship. And with that merging it literally a sexual act not " friendship " they literally are doing things others see as taboo it not human sex but it very much is gem version of sex..... Now been a kid cartoon we gloss over kids fusion with steven and only highlight the pro gay we want and downplayed the plain as day sex actions thier just friendly.... and get excited about dancing...... sure and nobody cheats and lies in real life.....

From what little I understand of the whole concept of Fusion, both have to in a sense resonate with each other, and an easy way to do that is well, to dance. So that might be the reason they dance, to be able to resonate with each other to become one with each other.

Fusion isn't sex, they don't reproduce that way. The fusion serves no other purpose than combining their physical form. They can share emotions and experiences, even those they had before they fused. The crystal gems dance to prepare themselves mentally for joining with another gem. Fusions of different gems likely takes more preparation and same type gems as the personalities and abilities of similar gems are closer. The rubies show similar gems just need to be incontact with eachother to fuse. The fusion lasts until both gems want the fusion to fall apart or they take enough damage. Jasper and Lapis's fusion didn't fall apart because they both wanted to stay fused even if they had different desires for the fusion. Garnet shares in the powers of sapphire and ruby, boasting the toughness of the ruby gems and the foresight of sapphire along with the power boost fusions get together. it falls apart when the gems disagree about how they should handle pearl trying to trick her way into their fusion relationship.

I feel like to fuse u gotta be in the same emotional state. When fusing in a life threatening situation or as part of ur job, it’s easier to sync up b/c you’ll likely already be in a similar state. But when fusing recreationally, I think the easiest way to sync with someone is by expressing your emotions physically (through dance). That way they can see & feel how you’re feeling and vice versa, allowing all parties to work toward the state where fusion is possible

Lapis most definitely can not defeat blue Diamond especially when blue diamonds aura can immediately stop her water like Steven sheild stopped lapis water from working. Also lapis got her water powers from blue Diamond.. if blue Diamond wanted to use her water powers she most definitely can over power lapis easily

Fusion is obviously not sex, but the fact that there are sexual undertones with a huge chunk of these fusions at all is very disturbing. Fusion could've been so much better if it was utilized for things outside of just "love" and used for a more meaningful theme, especially for a show like Steven Universe. That's a pipe dream and a half though considering Rebecca Sugar's the creator and all.

I believe fusion itself represents the relationship between its components. The dancing/touch/hug/etc is meant to synchronize their gems/bodies so that they CAN fuse. It's to help them get in the same mindspace essentially, which is why when Steven and Amethyst both feel bad about themselves, they don't need to dance because they are already sharing the same feeling. So they fuse just by hugging

Similar to what many others have commented, fusion is just the representation of being one. It's taking that oneness in purpose and giving it form. Sometimes that oneness is a short term goal, like in the case with Opal. Amythyst and Pearl really can't stand each other for the most part. There relationship is much like a sibling rivalry, but they put their differences aside when it matters to make Opal. However, their differences are too great to maintain Opal beyond the objectives they set out for. This is even more exemplified when Alexandrite fuses to pose as Steven's parent. The Crystal Gems all want to support Steven so they put they different perspectives aside to create a unified front for him, but they cannot maintain it. I feel there can be some sexual tension involved, and some parts in the show certainly have it, but that's not uncommon with close working relationships. That doesn't make the act primarily sexual, that just means humans are sexual creatures and emotional intimacy tends to be closely tied to physical intimacy. A good example is Pearl. I feel Pearl's loneliness from her unrequited affection for Rose causes her emotions to overstep bounds, like in the example you presented with Garnet. It's hard for Pearl to keep that division. Whereas for Garnet, who is a very committed and exclusive relationship of Sapphire and Ruby, it is much easier to keep any other fusion limited to its scope and purpose. It really is an excellent example of the complexity of human relationships because each participant has to juggle the purpose and their personal feelings, and if anything is out of sync it just falls apart.
