Late to the party, my wife and I have T520 Thinkpads in addition to our desktops. I'm also using a T420 as a poor man's server on our home LAN with a large HDD stuck into the DVD bay. The only changes I've made to the Thinkpads is to replace the HDD with SSDs. Lusting after a T480 as an upgrade but as we are not gamers the T520 thinkpads are fine and we have no desire to move to Win 11.

Guessing the feature was likely a Dial Up Modem, and the ribbon cable might have been for either LPC/Other Debugging, or was also related to the modem. The Ghost drive might have been a flash cache module, being reported to the OS despite being unpresent.

I'm a Thinkpad T-series fanboy. My wife and I have T520 laptops in addition to our desktops. I even use a T420 with a large HDD stuffed into the DVD slot as a poor man's file server on our home network. The only changes I've made to the Thinkpads is replacing the HDD with an SSD. My first Thinkpad was a T61 the first that came with a wide screen display, sadly it finally died this year. I'm thinking about getting a T480 or T580 as our next laptop upgrade, but will likely stay on Win 10, but that is a different discussion.

i really wish i had a use for older thinkpads like this, i bought a cheap 15 inch laptop sadly, its more powerful and efficient than any older thinkpad, however it is less durable.

I mean thinking back about it sony was probably right to ditch the optical media company, but in the same vein they could've made their own BD drives for the playstation.

I have the somewhat same laptop from 2009 which still run okay for today's use (2024) albeit with a few tweaks and customizations. I use a HP G60 with the same intel Pentium T4300 dual core CPU, maxed out the 4GB DDR2 RAM that it can handle, and installed a SSD and another 500GB HDD on the DVD drive using a adapter. As for the main OS I install a custom light weight Windows 10 ISO meant for low end laptops (Win10 Oprekin) as well as a modded iGPU drivers made by the developer Nightmayor. It ran great and fast, I am able to check emails, browse websites with some ease, even watch UA-cam videos at 720p max without stutter using the H264ify chrome extension. But unfortunately with today's internet and how heavy the websites are with their scripts, UI, animations etc. some sites make my laptop chug when loading their content. You'll have to install Ublock Origin, use a custom debloated chrome browser like Supermium, etc. Most developers expect you to have the latest of hardware in order to browse their content. Even with other retro developers like ActionRetro making the internet useful for low income consumers who still has old computers as their daily drivers. In a few years we're either down to two choices, buy a new up to date computer or switch over to Linux.

I randomly bought a USA version of the UX58 prototype; it even got a handwritten serial number sticker. and same as yours, the model number is PCG-XXXXX. First time saw this unusual model number I didn't even realized it's a prototype machine, and the seller seems not knowing at all. he told me this computer is a component of a lab test equipment.

I am currently only using a T430 with Windows 7/Arch. I will probably keyboard mod it since i once used a friend's t420 and fell in love with the keyboard. Anyways, it still holds up better than a macbook from that era

Which is the uses for a mini PC I really thought they could be as powerful as a normal sized PC with the same Specs So these are smaller and actually slower? Does that mean an i5 processor in this is different to an i5 processor in q normal sized PC? I would want to use this for Plex etc vut seems it would buffer even if cabled internet. So... Maybe for queuing downloads? I dont know actually Maybe as a dedicated machine for labs like Kali or ParrotOS? Do you know what slot this has got a WiFi card? Lenovo t420 was a bargin before but not now. They are expensive for what you get. They are very expensive to upgrade now also. The only reason to use it now is for it's keyboard.
