3 Sketching Tips for Plein Air Competitions
In this video I joined a bunch of fellow artists at a plein air painting event. I’m going to show you how I painted a scene with watercolor markers and watercolor pencils on a watercolor canvas board.
Plus I'll share 3 tips for painting in a Plein Air Competition regardless of your painting medium.
Here they are but you'll want to watch anyway to see exactly HOW I did these 3 things.
1- Setup quickly
2- Simplify
3-Have fun!

Draw a Hummingbird (and got inspired by LEGO statues!)
This is an excellent video and the choice to share this particular memory and painting was a fantastic one!
I watched your “sitting in the truck” painting first, stumbling onto your channel looking for something else, and I felt instantly like kin. Haha. My mother and I just picked up four neo ii crayons and three woody crayons to test and compare and check out. We have decided to order the 30 pack of neo I and break them all in half, putting half in an Altoids tin for her and the other in a separate one for me. The idea is that mine will stay in he car and hers will stay w her while I work. Then if we like them and use them enough, we will invest a little more in them. Both of your videos on these made me feel way more confident in this decision, as I was super worried I’d not know where to start w them. Your no-nonsense, roll with it attitude is so calming and encouraging. I hope you know you will make a difference for many of you keep up these little teaching sessions, dragging us along w you on your imperfect and real-life adventures. By the way, both of these have made me miss my Rockies badly, but I can live vicariously through you as I wait for my time to return to them! Thanks for sharing w us here.
That is so awesome. Great idea on splitting the neocolors. They often break in half anyway 😁. Thanks for the kind words and encouragement.
You explain everything so clearly 😊 I’m excited to start this project for something I wanna use ❤
Cool. good luck 😎
How special to have a portrait of your special kitty done by you, she turned out beautiful!
Cutting that watercolour block with your left hand so near the blade is so dangerous! One slip and you might lose at best your fingers, at worst your life. Always clamp items that are close to a blade, trust me on this I have been woodworking for well over sixty years and have seen accidents happen due to such carelessness. Always remember, the most important thing in a workshop area is yourself. Other than that a good video, thank you for taking the time and trouble to post.
Thanks for the reminder to keep safety first!
Try that on Pastelmat! It holds many layers and the colours look more opaque
@@emilyerdbeere9210 I've heard really good things about Pastelmat. One day I'll give it a try.
Nice use of contrasts, good work
Thanks. This is one of my favorite paintings I've done
It turned out good! For me, every painting starts out messy.....and it feels like that's when most people want to take a look! 🙂
Thanks Chris! ...and people always look at the ugly stage!
Neocolor 2 always saves my "failed" paintings 😄 I adore them as a top layer, not so much as a base layer since they lift too easily. I love how you emphasized the subtle differences in color. I'm trying to get better at that, but I have a longstanding bad habit of precisely matching local colors, which ends up boring.
Great comment. I feel like I'm more bold with my color in the fall. It has been hard to translate that to the summer scenes when it's all green. I often end up just making it look muddy. But it's fun to practice. Thanks for watching.
Patience and hard work is paying back with your talent. These are not easy by sketching
Really fine work. I also have a long early ugly stage that I learned get past to finish
Thanks Suzanne. It's comforting that "ugly stage" or "ugly phase" is so common with artists that it has a name 😁
I do this too when hiking in forests. I use pencil and charcoal. it is very relaxing. my favorites are 60 second snapshots of the surroundings
Doing quicker sketches is a good idea. Thanks.
Good job, man
Your painting is wonderful! Your perseverance and patience were well worth it. I love the lamp and Joshua trees in the landscape. All of the paintings look so cheerful together at the Senior Center. Thank you for sharing this beautiful art and happy day. 🌞
You are so kind Cynthia. Thanks again.
A truly lovely experience to view! Thank you for the instruction and joy.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.
Love that landscape!
So many cool places to visit here in Utah.
I was waiting for a new video! Thank you very very much! Nice painting! Greetings from Germany
Thanks. I've been slow to get a new one out but I finally did it. I would love to see Germany some day.
Very interesting! “Having fun” is the best advice ever, when arting. 😉
I totally agree! It probably should be tip number 1, not 3 😁
I would love it hike and sketch
Helpful video! I'm thinking of taking my Inktense on my next vacation, instead of watercolor
Just found you. Love your style and approach! I'm just starting out on my journey of learning to draw and I really like watercolour pencils. Your videos are an inspiration
So cool! It's a fun journey right?
Beautiful drawing!
Thank you so much 😀
American Dipper is also called a Water Ouzle
That's a cool name!
Great channel!
Thanks. That means a lot.
Love the explanations as you go.
Definitely takes longer to do the voice over but I know I can't talk and draw at the same time 🤓 so I'm glad it's working out OK.
I’m glad you showed that you sprayed a protectant, and what you used. I use the same stuff. Lots to learn in this one. Thanks.
Thanks! I think that spray has been working pretty well. I'm on my second can.
What a beautiful kitty!!! 😺💕 You did such an amazing job with all of your attention to detail. It really takes time, because they have those intricate fur patterns. Those pan pastels look like so much fun, because they remind me of a cosmetics palette! 🤣 Thank you for sharing your amazing techniques! 🌠
Many many thanks
Do you have any tutorials?
Lots of longer videos on my main channel. If you liked the coyote, you'll probably like this one ua-cam.com/video/7NklaOiVt6o/v-deo.html
That was a challenge but you did well and it was interesting to see how you handled the flames. Not an easy subject
Flames are tricky! Thanks for the kind words.
The white Posca pen effect at the end worked well. 👍
I thought so too. It gets me one step closer to painting with acrylic one day 😊
Thanks for the idea of the posca brush pen! I will use that in the future!
Cool. 😀 I wish they were a bit cheaper though.
Love how you talk through what you are doing.
Thanks David! That really was a good breakfast burrito 😋
Your "trial and error" always ends up so fantastic!
Thanks Mellissa!
Pan pastel is very cool. Thank you for sharing your journey. You definitely have developed a very cool style. I watch your videos while I paint and draw and it’s been very helpful for a lot of reasons so thank you!
Wow. Thank you so much! Glad they are helpful.
Being new to your channel, just now back watching. And I gotta say I was surprised how well this one turned out. You just kept working with it. And that tough canvas can take it. I like how you used the electric eraser too. Keep the adventure alive. 😊
Thank you so much for watching. It is an adventure
Love your having fun..however i feelmarkers are bit roughthan watercolor pencils
They are different for sure.
No such thing as “too many art supplies”! 😂
🤣 As long as I keep using them, I think I'm safe.
Thanks for sharing some interesting techniques ❤
Thanks for watching and commenting
I like how you're not afraid to mix mediums, it turned out great!
@@ChrisBreier thanks Chris! I can't resist buying the supplies so I gotta figure how to use them somehow. 😜
Thank you for your honesty regarding being stalled. I’m glad you went back to this one. It always amazes me how you build it up.
Thanks! It might be time to give it another try.
I love watching your videos and hearing your thoughts
Thanks. I'm glad you are enjoying them!
I've totally been there!
Makes sense... It's a cool park. Lots of people every time I go.
Enjoyed seeing your video. Still learning from you. I'm in awe of your trees here.
Thanks again! I do have fun painting trees. 😊
So glad I found your channel. I consider myself to be a good artist, but not a great artist. This creates this battle in me that makes it difficult to get started. Hearing what you say during and about the process helps so much.
Sounds like we're both learning as we go. Thanks for your encouraging words as well.
I enjoyed watching your process and listening to the commentary. Thanks for sharing 🙂
@@katyvashkevich2719I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much!
It's great to see your process from start to finish. Funny how things always look a bit messy at the start, but you really transformed the grass so well! I love the mountain, too. Thanks for sharing! ☺️
@@Cynthia.B I keep trying new approaches and learn something new each time. Thanks for watching and commenting 😀
Thats an awesome painting!
Seems like a really nice guy. Love the attitude and videos!!!
I like it. Wonder how it would look without gesso? 🤔
@@Mity_Moose good question. I'm finding the pencils work differently on each surface type. It's fun to try the different types.
@@PaintWithPencil Like you, I favor pencils of all sorts. And, I would like to conquer that Monet impressionistic look in iPad ArtRage app. as well as like you did with pencils. Esp, now that I see it's possible. Thanks for responding. Glad I found you cuz you mention multiple times, "just have fun."
I love the Artrage app!
love this🤩 ..more with neocolors please💜
Thanks! As luck would have it the next video that will publish in August features Neocolor and markers as well.
@@PaintWithPencil woot woot! Thanks so much, I cant wait!🤩
