  • Since 1825, Newfane was home to the Windham County Jail: the facility was used to lock up local offenders, and at one point, was also home to a hotel wing, (which counted Theodore Roosevelt as one of its guests). As Vermont consolidated its prison system, the jail fell out of use and was recently vacated by the Windham County Sheriff's Office. The Historical Society of Windham County has since taken it over for its new museum. Vermont Historical Society Executive Director Steve Perkins and ABC 22 & Fox 44 Anchor Mike Hoey stop by to learn about the building and its storied history.
This Place in History is produced in partnership by ABC 22 & FOX 44 (www.mychamplainvalley.com) and the Vermont Historical Society.
