Enjoying your videos! Would you consider showing us your space? If not a full home tour, maybe show us how you’ve decorated a room in your home…? ❤
@@mmellyful Thank you so much! I may just have something in the works happening soon… stay tuned!!! ❤️😊
Happy Tuesday, Tara! Nice video. I don’t buy from Etsy too often but always seem to find some representation of the object spinning around my brain that isn’t in any of the big box stores. Handmade is something to be celebrated and thank you for showcasing this alternative to mass production. The shameless plug tea cup would look amazing in my kitchen btw! 😊 I, also, have to find those obelisk candles…so unique. Have a great rest of your week!
Happy Tuesday to you too! I’m so glad you liked the video - and the tea cup print. I’m still a little self-conscious about sharing my art so I really appreciate your kind words ❤️ Have a good week 😊

That’s so sweet of you to say! Thanks for being here 😊
Can you tell me about those lovely white vases on the shelf behind you?
Those were a Homesense find from a couple of years ago. On clearance actually! 😊
I'm really liking these colorful little concrete trays. Ever since we moved, I've become slightly obsessed with trays. Weird thing to be obsessed with, and yet... My husband and I are both prone to leaving stuff out on all surfaces and pile-making. We just are. We like having the stuff we use often close to hand, and our habits aren't about to change in that regard, at least not as this point in our lives, but that doesn't mean I'm not trying to work to mitigate it, hence the trays. I've had limited yet not insignificant success with this strategy so far. I've got trays everywhere now, from the bathroom to my husband's desk, and no less than three on the coffee table (it being huge is both a blessing and a curse). It's not perfect, but it does make things look more organized, and definitely easier to tidy and clean. So, even though I watched the video knowing that I'm not adding anything extra to my current mile long shopping list, at least not until we finally get the stuff we've already got situated properly (I really do need to get the electrician over, the lighting situation is getting ridiculous), I still benefitted from it. Thanks for the suggestions, Tara!
I can definitely relate to this! Trying to corral all the stuff my husband and I tend to leave out is a constant battle for me. Trays can help for sure! Thanks so much for watching Ronnie 😊
I started using stemless wine glasses about 10 years ago as they perfectly double as water glasses, saving space in the cupboard. I won't use stemware again. The ones you found are so quirky and fun. Would have been great to link the 80's vid in the cards, such a good video.
That’s a great point - they do work well as water glasses! Oh I guess I should have… I’ll add it to the description! 😊
Appreciated your knowledgeable suggestions / advice for the type of interiors the objects would suit.
@@xinexine2785 Thanks so much! 😊
All nice picks. But the first end table you showed would be very easy to DYI, with a saw and a router. Use pine "1 by's" and laminate to get the thickness, seal with shellac and paint. Not much woodworking skill required at all.

As a retired college art educator, I appreciate how much time you put into your slide shows. They go far beyond most YT presentations. I have one question, though. You often use the word interesting as a reason you like the room you're discussing. In my critiques, I always found that word, used by itself, too vague to be of much use. You're so knowledgeable, though, I think you know what it means to you, but the short format doesn't allow you to go that much in depth. Can you tell us what specific attributes make something interesting to you? For example, you seem drawn to contrast, not just visual, but in meaning. Are there more?
@@dottiebaker6623 I guess it’s time to break out the thesaurus! Lol. I suppose “interesting” is a word I do fall back on quite often. Perhaps because it feels less judgemental - whether a viewer likes or dislikes something, they may at least still find it interesting. It’s a very fair critique and something I will definitely consider. Thank you 😊
That last image was STUNNING
I love it too! 😊
Who was the very famous interior designer from probably a generation ago who said every room should have some a bit wrong in it?
Oh shoot - I know I’ve heard it but can’t recall who it was! If anyone else knows leave a comment! 😊
I've always been a pattern lover, so this video was right up my alley. I instantly hit subscribe! And I would add, one of the things that make many of your examples work well is that the patterns contribute to the balance in the room. Love that you took this topic from fairly simple to full on overblown. Thanks!
Thank you so much! And you are correct about the sense of balance. So glad you found the channel. Welcome! 😊
This was really cool and informative. I’d honestly watch many more videos of just ”this example color scheme is cool and this is why I think it’s cool” 😃
@@marjojohannasutinen406 That’s good to know! Thank you 😊
Beautiful editing ❤
Thank you so much! ❤️😊
New subscriber here and I`m having so much fun watching all of your videos. I love your sensibility and taste, your generous but yet honest approach being non judgemental (I hate preachy "don't do this or that" mistake-videos) and so full of inspiration as well as practical advise. Hope to see much more in the future!
Welcome!!! Thank you so much for the kind comment. So glad you’re here 😊
Hey Tara, Happy Monday! I love, love, love this video. Have been wanting to experiment more with patterns but just throwing things together (like one article I read suggested) didn’t feel like such a great or cost-effective idea. Florals really appeal to me but I never knew what accents them best; thanks for the stripe tip. I, also, never considered windows or room dividers as pattern inspirations. What a terrific idea! Have a great week!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Hope you have a great week too! 😊

I have been loving pattern in my home so much. The Ryder hotel in Charleston has been so beautifully designed with pattern as well! Using it for my own inspo!
Oh interesting - I’ll have to look into that one! 😊
Another thought provoking video. Well done, Tara! I don't know why, but I haven't felt any desire for added patterns in my life since some point in my early 20s when I decided that a piece of faux-fur zebra print fabric was the best thing ever, and so had to come home with me (it ended up as some throw pillows). Nowadays, pretty much the only patterns that regularly appeal to me are a byproduct of natural materials, like wood, rocks, plants with interesting foliage, or that emerge from architectural features or how things are placed in a space, that sort of thing. Some specific varieties of tile in the right context as well. Rugs are a huge problem for me. It's borderline impossible for me to find a modern rug that I actually like, and I definitely do not have the budget for the genuine hand made Persian rugs I adore (and am also very specific about). I've actually never given this any thought at all before. I guess it's just not part of my personal style, which is a bit odd, now that I think of it, since I am very fond of both color and texture. Maybe I'll give it some more thought and consider whether it's something I want to try and experiment with at some point. Oh, and I did want to mention, on an unrelated note, that the wipes you're using now in videos are not working for me. I find them distracting, personally. Perhaps it's just a matter of personal taste, but I figured I'd give the feedback anyway, and you'll do what feels right to you. And now I'm going to check out your Pinterest for potential pattern inspo. Maybe I'll find something that really appeals to me, or maybe I'll find that I'm just not a pattern person, but either way, I'll have learned something, and that's always fun. Thanks for making such wonderfully illuminating videos, Tara. Can't wait for the next one.
I think for anyone who doesn’t see themselves as a “pattern person” that introducing pattern through natural materials and architectural elements as you mention is a great way to go! Printed textiles etc can be fun but don’t have to appeal to everyone. Thanks for the feedback about the wipes - as someone who is very much a newbie to making & editing videos I’m still figuring out what I’m doing, so constructive comments are helpful! Thanks as always for the comment Ronnie 😊
Thank you, Tara. This is exactly what I needed. Some UA-cam posters are taking submissions from viewers and doing a photoshop type re-work to complete or improve their space. Will you ever consider this? I could use some advice on how to incorporate pattern and color using some Viennese succession pattern, sort of art deco (Hoffmann or Moser) like the black and white case pieces you showed. I think I can easily DIY it. I have tried combing pieces that I bought simply because I loved them, but they don’t all work together and I made some expensive mistakes. I think you really need a master plan before you begin. Great video, well done.
So glad you liked the video! Thanks for the suggestion :) I am planning to do a call-out for viewer questions. Probably after the holidays 😊
Over the last months, you have given me so much to think about, Tara, and this week is no exception! This is the content my space needed!

Just discovered this channel. Good ideas, but those of us who love older homes shouldn’t be barred from emulating them, simply because we buy builder grade. I don’t see it as fake. I see it as making your house your home. If arched doorways, ceiling medallions, corner protectors, leaded glass, claw foot tubs, and wallpaper are your taste, I don’t see why a builder grade structure should dictate otherwise.
@@Fuzzmom903 The only person you need to please with your design choices is you - so if that’s what you are drawn to then go for it! Thanks for watching 😊
Hi, Tara! Sorry I'm late. Love the video. It's right up my alley. I am a big fan of understanding "the rules" well enough to know why they emerged, and so be able to deliberately break them as needed. I've only relatively recently become familiar with the Wrong Shoe theory, but as a Gen X-er we've been applying it for decades, which is how we ended up with chunky boots becoming an acceptable addition to a flow-y, feminine dress/skirt, which I am all for. I'm even old enough to remember when jeans were considered way too casual to be paired with anything like a stiletto (the horror!), so I'm very familiar with the concept. Instead of going through all the pictures and giving my personal opinions on what works (or doesn't) for me, I'll spare you those extra paragraphs and instead mention that to me, there is no such thing as the wrong art, because I've never viewed art as an element of interior design. That's not to denigrate the art of interior design, just that the concept of choosing art to fit the décor is alien to me. I understand it's something many people do, and that some people need help with it, and why, and that's perfectly fine, it's just that I, despite not being in any way artistically inclined, happened to spend my formative years surrounded by artists. Pretty much all my friends were artists of some sort until I met new friends at uni, and I even married an artist, and we have several artists in the extended family, so I ended up collecting a bunch of pieces that way over they years, and alongside the mementos from galley and museum visits, a handful of inherited pieces, some favorite pieces by my husband, the things he's collected over the years, etc. we have a whole bunch of stuff to display, and it's always been a matter of choosing what we feel like having around us rather than what fits with a particular look. Especially since we're never actually going for a specific look so much as working with what we've got/makes us happy/we have room for. Now we have all the stuff that was in storage to choose from as well. It's gonna be fun when we finally get to it. Regarding the Unexpected Red thing, I have to wonder, at what point does the red stop being unexpected? Because I just happened to stumble across a very groovy space age/retro-futuristic chrome red and black chair on Facebook marketplace, and it was only about $15US, because the upholstery is peeling, but I recently renewed a handful of old hand bags that started peeling in storage, so I felt I could fix it, and its now an unexpected (to me) red chair (though I haven't worked on it yet since one of the cats chose it as his own). Which could be considered unexpected red in my current living room, since you can't see my red chaise longue under all the boxes, but eventually those will be cleared, and some of the red art will finally be hanged, and I'm guessing at that point the red will come off as reasonably expected... See? Didn't even have to go over each image to write my traditional paragraphs-long comment. As always, love your thought-provoking content.
I was beginning to worry 😉! I love your attitude towards art - I agree that ideally people should be collecting pieces they love without concern for how it will look in their interior. But then the interior designer side of me creeps in and sometimes I do end up considering how it will “coordinate”. Lol It’s sounds like you have an incredible collection of art and furniture! I love hearing about your process as you unpack and sort everything out. Thanks again for such a thoughtful comment! 😊
I appreciate that you include so many examples in your videos... That's really impactful. I find the "wrong" element can absolutely make a space - and add interest - but in some decors it feels a little forced. Like they pulled something together that is maybe a little too slick, so at the last minute they throw in something completely crazy but that doesn't end up meshing at all. That seems to be more often the case with the "wrong" furniture. But your examples for colour and lighting (and especially art!!) really inspired me to take a bit more risk in my design choices
Very fair - some of the examples appeal to me more than others too! But I find sometimes the spaces that challenge my perception of what is “good” can end up inspiring me in ways the spaces I instantly love maybe wouldn’t. Thanks so much for the comment 😊
Not only did I like this video but I also enjoy your channel and the inspo you share ❤️❤️❤️ thank you 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻

The wrong shoe theory application in interior design sounds interesting. In theory. But none of the examples appealed to me. Some even more than that.
Oh wow - there were a lot of images and none of them appealed to you at all? I guess we have very different tastes. Lol. To each their own! 😊
@@tarapallaychannelWe are indeed different. All these images are terribly visually noisy for me. Even without the wrong shoe.
9:10 cozy and playful. I love the wood and fuchsia design.
@@beevie4081 Right?! So fun 😊
I love Allison Bornstein’s “Wrong Shoe Theory” and how this can easily be applied to interior design. Done right, I think it’s bold, confident, risk taking & adds a touch of sophistication to a space. You can start small & build up confidence. Thanks, Tara. This is great.
Well said! Thank you so much 😊
Beautiful whimsies, but I think the term “wrong” / i.e. incorrect is wrong. It’s just strong individual choices. Tension, as you say. Edgier. ❤️💕
Very true! I really just used the term “wrong” because of the theory I was referencing, but tension is more accurate 😊
If your design choices (or creative choices) are the choices that everyone is making, then it’s really not a choice. Taste means that you have and express an opinion…that you have a point of view. Do what feels good to you and not what feels good to everyone else. Make your own choices and be uniquely you!
Exactly!!! Your home should be a reflection of who you are and what you love. If it makes you happy the opinions of others shouldn’t matter. 😊
I was told that a piece of red and or a piece of black added to a room elevates it.
So true! 😊
how did I not find your channel earlier ? I love this vibe, congratulations on you interesting takes !
Well I’m so glad you found me now! Thanks for being here 😊
The first image under wrong lighting, I've always found ornate architectural detailing pairs perfectly with anything from mid century modern to quite contemporary. Never really known why, I just love the look.
Agreed! I love it too 😊
This concept of the 'Wrong Shoe Theory' applied to home design is so intriguing! I love the idea that unexpected elements can really transform a space and make it more interesting.
Thank you so much! 😊
I think that's what the Parisians do to their interiors, using modern furniture and contemporary art in old apartments with wall mouldings and ceiling medallions. That gives the Parisian style its own characteristics
Absolutely! I love that look so much 😊
