    Preach it, Sam! We need to ban that phrase: elevated horror. Anyway, very nice teaser review! I can't wait to see the film; unfortunately, because of my schedule I'll probably have to wait for streaming. I hope Eggers supervises the transfer to home media to get that atmospheric look right for television. Apparently, Eggers has promised an extended cut of the film for blu-ray!

      @@ycft Watched the film yesterday and was blown away by it! Lily-Rose Depp gives a fantastic Oscar worthy performance. The Gothic look of the film was like an oppressive fever dream you wanted to wake up from. The sound design/music is the most original aspect of the film that adds layers to this Murnau adaptation. Count Orlok's booming voice from beyond the grave both hypnotizes and repulses. I don't believe we needed more visual homages to the original because Herzog did quite a lot of that in his adaptation and clearly Eggers storyline/characters are quite different from Murnau's film. In a lot of ways he improves on the original especially with his operatic ending which I felt was even more tragic and heartbreaking than Murnau's. By the way, have you heard the rumours about Eggers doing a remake of the David Bowie fantasy Labyrinth (1986)?!

      We think you would really like The Lighthouse, it's a wild ride! The original Nosferatu is very easy to get a hold off, there are countless uploads of it here on YT, and we think you'll recognize a lot of the famous scenes. Across all of the adaptations, the core elements of the story don't really change.

    I’m sorry the reduced level of underwater scenes or “monster tears things up” episodes isn’t your cup of tea. For me, this last installment takes an excellent, dark psychological turn vis a vis “man’s intrusion into nature” and turns the Creature into a truly sympathetic figure. And you were disappointingly “shocked” by the abrupt ending? It’s the ambiguity that makes it work, fer crissakes. A much cooler way to go out than the usual, expected “rampage.” But that’s just me.

    Once again congratulations for well-researched study on an obscure film. I managed to download a copy of this film a month ago in preparation for Eggers' Nosferatu (2024). I saw the film upon its release and enjoyed it very much especially Defoe's performance. Rewatching now, I'm less enthused but I still found the ending having the same powerful effect on me. The idea that film achieves immortality for its subject by capturing time and defeating death is very moving because that is the essence of art. Best version of Nosferatu is obviously the original ( I can't stand Herzog's colorized version of it) which was a more documentary approach to horror than the studio shot German Expressionist films of UFA. I can't wait to see the new film and pray that is different enough from the original to justify Eggers need to do a remake of this classic. I hope you guys do a review of the new film upon its release! Merry Christmas!!!

    • @ycft
      @ycft 15 днів тому

      Thank you for another great comment! We hope you had a nice Christmas 😀 We are extremely excited to see the new Nosferatu, Eggers has made some really good films over the last few years. The Lighthouse was fantastic. It definitely feels like one of those horrors that critics are going to love, we've seen the term "elevated horror" used to describe it, which seems to be the only way certain critics can compliment horror as a genre. We'll be seeing it on New Years Day when it is released where we are, we'll have to be very careful not to see any spoilers, we really don't want to see what Count Orlok looks like until we're in the cinema. David is determined to watch the 1979 before the 2024 film comes out, mainly because it's bothering him that he hasn't seen it yet 😂It's interesting that it brings in more of Dracula because the novel had entered public domain.

    • @guillermo9631
      @guillermo9631 14 днів тому

      @@ycft I hate that stupid critical term "elevated horror" as if artistic horror films were nonexistent before A24 films. Horror movies have only in recent times become acceptable to the critical community because it's a younger audience that grew up with horror in the 80s and 90s and don't see the genre as just exploitation films. Let's just keeping calling these works "Horror Films" please and let Time be the judge of their being "elevated" or not.

    • @ycft
      @ycft 8 днів тому

      @@guillermo9631 It has already gotten to the point where the term is a bit of a joke, and critics haven't realized that yet. It'll be interesting to see when audiences turn against A24, like they do with most studios. They're been putting out some good projects but all it takes is a bad year.

    • @guillermo9631
      @guillermo9631 8 днів тому

      @@ycft Of course. These things run in cycles. Eventually they'll be a cultural backlash against the genre but that's fine; I always felt horror should be a transgressive artform that challenges societal norms. Remember Cronenberg's early 70s/80s films were constantly attacked by the critics until he was deemed "respectable" by them later on.

    I'm not a fan of either movie because the story works best as a short film. In fact, I think Scream is the best loose remake of When A Stranger Calls which Kevin Williamson stole from. Another similar film is Ti West's House of the Devil (2009) where a college girl through a flyer is falsely led by the creepy owners to believe that it is a babysitting job; instead she is caring for their unseen elderly mother living upstairs. Interestingly the movie has the grainy film look of a lost low-budget 80s horror film that you'd only find as a rental at your local video store!

    • @ycft
      @ycft 22 дні тому

      House of the Devil is a very good film! When David first watched it he didn't know what the film was, or that it was filmed to look as retro as it is. It was on Netflix at the time, he was looking for a background film while he was doing some work and he saw it was released in 2009, and then proceeded to be very confused until he did some research 😂

    • @guillermo9631
      @guillermo9631 21 день тому

      @@ycft I can understand the confusion because the opening sequence alone with the cinematography and movie titles make the film look like some Canadian slasher film from the 80s. It even has a bouncy synth music track that was a hallmark for every 80s low-budget horror films! Later on, Ti West would parody 70s horror films with X (2022).

The opening of the first Exorcist is perfect and the story between the characters leading up to the exorcism is well done but the exorcism itself is kinda hammy and cringe. The exorcist film came out after the Zodiac killings. Dahmer mentioned the Exorcist III as one of, if not, his favorite movie. I still think that theatrical cut is way better. This movie is so slow and cringe, dull and DRAGS ITS ASS for like two and a half hour. Its only saving grace is GCS and a scene (or shot, really) that literally last less than 3 seconds. EDIT: Also, seems they went out of their way to get a PG rating, cus they skip EVERY kill scene, only to "describe it" in the dialogue after the fact. What? I don't want to see a horror movie where they "describe" the murder scenes😂😅, SHOW! the murder scene.

  • @guillermo9631

    Excellent overview of the true sequel to The Exorcist. Blatty as writer/director brings a more sober meditation about good and evil than the more bombastic original. The acting all around is excellent with Scott putting in a very committed performance and of course, the very underrated Brad Dourif gives his own career best achievement. The only fumble is the unnecessary exorcism forced on Blatty by the studio but other than that his directing is masterful. Now I want to make a case for watching The Exorcist: Believer. I just watched the movie for a second time and it still remains a powerful emotional experience that I haven't seen in the other failed sequels that Blatty didn't write. Yes, they bring back Ellen Burstyn in a small but important role but this time it's a small town community that has to fight demons possessing two young girls. They use different forms of exorcism from the characters' different faiths to combat these evil forces and in the end, they have to make hard choices for the salvation of the children. Don't read any reviews because the critics/audiences have got it wrong! Trust me, see for yourself and make your own judgements!

    • @ycft
      @ycft Місяць тому

      We didn't know The Exorcist: Believer went down the route of different faiths require different exorcisms, that's interesting! Okay that has peaked our interests for Believer. It definitely looks like the reviews for this film were blown way out of proportion. At least it looks like they tried to do something new and interesting, which most likely won't be the case with whatever form the sequel takes. We really did enjoy watching Exorcist 3, it'll definitely become a film we watch at least once a year. David has watched The Exorcist: The Beginning and really didn't enjoy it, he might have fallen asleep because he can't remember the second half of the film 😂It's interesting how the first three films are so different from each other. In ways they work and in others they don't, but it's a trilogy unlike any other.

    • @guillermo9631
      @guillermo9631 Місяць тому

      @@ycft The weird part about Exorcist: The Beginning was that it was refilmed by Renny Harlin using some of the actors/locations from the failed original film Exorcist: Dominion by Paul Schrader. After the failure of The Beginning at the box office, the studio released Schrader's cut in a few theaters. I'm not crazy about either version; as a fan of Paul Schrader's films, I believe he took this film solely as a work-for-hire bringing no real conviction to it. The story of both productions is more interesting than the films! I'm glad to see that both of you are open minded enough to take the chance of seeing Believer after your bad experience of Exorcist: The Beginning. Now you can see why there was such a bad knee jerk reaction to the new film Believer. People thought it was just another cash grab by the studios and didn't appreciate the film for its original take of the Exorcist story. Let's face it, most fans just want a rehash of the first film except with more green vomiting and head spinnings!

    It's almost like pitch meeting for the film was made within the next hour of that meeting. Felt like it was never fleshed out. Someone above mentioned the small plots that go nowhere. And I always didn't get on with her basically being abandoned. Her family literally went into the afterlife to save her a couple years prior!!!! 😂

      It almost feels like it was an original story before being modified to be a Poltergeist sequel! I would have made more sense for her family to have been killed off, but they definitely wanted to leave the door open for them to return if they made it to a 4th film.

    I watched this movie last night for the first time even though I've never been a big fan of the franchise. I thought it was worse than the second film; it really seemed like a cheap knockoff with a bad script, mediocre performances, terrible makeup effects, etc. I understand Gary Sherman considers it a failure but he does his best with a budget lower than the first film. The one triumph of the film is it's use of in-camera physical effects instead of relying on the expensive opticals of the previous films. Nancy Allen's character as you say is the weakest link of the film and is so schizophrenic about her feelings for Carol Anne that she's almost as unlikeable as Kane! And here is where the movie lacks the power of the other films: the theme of family love that can defeat evil. Without that family unit this movie is missing HEART and replaces it with phony sentimentality for Carol Anne that's never established, much less earned by her new family. Storywise it makes no sense why her real family gives her away to an aunt we never heard of before and who doesn't really care about her! I think it would make more sense if her family died in an accident and she was forced to live with Patricia and her husband. You can make Patricia the black sheep of the family who moved to Chicago to start a career as an art dealer and rejects the notion of motherhood. Eliminate the stepdaughter entirely and make Carol Anne the child they never had. Patricia's gradual story arc of ultimately coming to care and protect Carol Anne would make more sense. I would also get rid of Kane since he was vanquished at the end of the previous film and either replace him with a new villain or just make the mirrors a supernatural force of evil that seduces and destroy its victims, using illusions to play on their fears like the movie Oculus (2013). Also please, lets get rid of that ridiculous Dr. Seaton with his dumb rationale about Carol Anne that leads to nowhere. Okay, the pieces are in place, the hard part now is coming up with a good story!

      It almost feels like there was a film missing in between 2 and 3, a film where her family was killed off and she moves in with her aunt, and then the events of the 3rd film happen. We get why they didn't go down the killing off the family route, they definitely wanted to keep the door open for their return, especially if it's true that Craig T Nelson was considering coming back for a 4th. Also, imagine the outcry if they'd been killed off-screen! We do really like Poltergeist 2, like we say this franchise has never been our favourite, but there's something about 2 and 3 that we really enjoy! The remake was, boring, so so boring. Gary Sherman did a great job considering the budget constraints you mentioned, and the extremely unfortunate circumstances he found himself in. Even with the issues this film has, it doesn't deserve the reputation it has, and even the 2nd film isn't talked about enough, people only seem to care about the first installment. You've suggested some really good tweaks to the story! In fact, the whole plot of this film, with or without the changes you've suggested would work without any connection to the previous films. It wouldn't surprise us if the plot started out as an original story before being modified to be a Poltergeist sequel.

      @@ycft I totally agree with you about it being an original story that was changed to be a Poltergeist sequel. In fact, you have an even better story without that connection. Again, you can't do Poltergeist without the family because that bond is the heart of the first two films and that's what really hurts the third film. With the spooky mirror interiors, you have a whole range of story possibilities: alternate realities, possessions, evil doubles, etc. Getting rid of the franchise elements, you can create a great adult psychosexual horror film.

    No it wasn't the Doctor/psychiatrist who attacked Karen's friend in the office. The Doctor was the only one who wasn't a werewolf, because remember, the Dr. didn't get turned, or scratched until the barn scene towards the end. And when he got scratched, He provoked Christopher to shoot im before he transformed. And is last words after being shot was "Thank God". I think that's also why the Doctor was able to live in the city. They can transform at will, however. It's at some points where they get triggered or something where they can't control not transforming.

    Sometimes “the worst of the three” doesn’t necessarily mean “bad”, it just means it’s the weakest entry thus far. I’ve come to find this happens a lot with threequels. Scream 3 is often considered the worst in the franchise and while it’s certainly the weakest of the original trilogy, it’s nowhere near as bad as every sequel that came after it (I hate when people say “There are no bad Scream movies”… yes there are!). Same goes for Child’s Play 3. It’s certainly not as good as its predecessors or Bride of Chucky, but it’s a hell of a lot better than Seed of Chucky and Cult of Chucky, in my opinion. Poltergeist III had a lot of things working against it. Two stars refused to return, a series of cast deaths, unnecessary reshoots, the unexpected passing of its star, and it’s the follow-up to two very successful films. I think had it been called anything other than Poltergeist it would have been better-received. The practical effects are great and the mirror reflection choreography is impressive. It’s a fun movie that wasn’t interested in repeating what the first two did. I respect that. As far as your criticism of it switching main characters, it’s not entirely uncommon for horror films. They focus on a character for a block of the runtime until they get killed, then they move on to the next. Look at the original Halloween: first it focuses on Loomis, then it shifts focus to Laurie, then a large portion follows Annie around, then it goes to Lynda, then back to Laurie. Most of the Friday the 13th’s also follow this formula. Even Psycho shifts focus from Marion to Norman, then Lila and Sam.

      Thanks for the great comment! Don't forget Nightmare n Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, probably one of the best threequels ever made (according to David). We're currently 4 hours into the 5 hours Doc of Chucky documentary, we do like Child's Play 3, but it still goes quite low on our list, purely because there are so many good Chucky sequels. The difference with Poltergeist 3 is that even thought he third film is good, it wasn't reviewed well at the time and fans HATED it, it's carried a bad reputation for years and it is so unwarranted! As you can hopefully tell from we video, we have a lot of respect for this film, and we'd pick rewatching this over any of the other films in the franchise (we know our dismissal of the first film is a very unpopular opinion). We don't mind it when films change main characters, Scream did it to great success, along with all the films you've mentioned. Our issue is with the plot centering around Carol Anne, and then her cousin and her boyfriend and then to her aunt and uncle, it comes across as really unfocused. Then to make her aunt the main character and make her have an emotional moment about family with Carol Anne just doesn't work for us, because they barely have any scenes together before that. Also, they never have any conflict leading up to this. All of Nancy Allen's scenes questioning whether Carol Anne is part of the family don't include, Carol Anne. For us, Donna should have been the one to have the emotional scene with Carol Anne at the end, because of the scene when she's on the phone to her friend saying they aren't properly related.

    I'm voting for the 1979 Barlow. Practical effects ALWAYS look better. CGI was a novelty at first, but it's waaay too over-used now...makes movies seem cheap. Everyone should watch the first Jaws movie to understand how real tension and fear can be instilled through film.
