Defoe is hilarious in this. it's astounding. going 1922 Nosferatu and this film back-to-back is an excellent double feature

Yeah it's such a shame! Like we mention in the video it is on UA-cam, but it isn't the best quality. We'll be keeping an eye out for a physical copy to add to our collection.

Once again congratulations for well-researched study on an obscure film. I managed to download a copy of this film a month ago in preparation for Eggers' Nosferatu (2024). I saw the film upon its release and enjoyed it very much especially Defoe's performance. Rewatching now, I'm less enthused but I still found the ending having the same powerful effect on me. The idea that film achieves immortality for its subject by capturing time and defeating death is very moving because that is the essence of art. Best version of Nosferatu is obviously the original ( I can't stand Herzog's colorized version of it) which was a more documentary approach to horror than the studio shot German Expressionist films of UFA. I can't wait to see the new film and pray that is different enough from the original to justify Eggers need to do a remake of this classic. I hope you guys do a review of the new film upon its release! Merry Christmas!!!

Thank you for another great comment! We hope you had a nice Christmas 😀
We are extremely excited to see the new Nosferatu, Eggers has made some really good films over the last few years. The Lighthouse was fantastic. It definitely feels like one of those horrors that critics are going to love, we've seen the term "elevated horror" used to describe it, which seems to be the only way certain critics can compliment horror as a genre. We'll be seeing it on New Years Day when it is released where we are, we'll have to be very careful not to see any spoilers, we really don't want to see what Count Orlok looks like until we're in the cinema.
David is determined to watch the 1979 before the 2024 film comes out, mainly because it's bothering him that he hasn't seen it yet 😂It's interesting that it brings in more of Dracula because the novel had entered public domain.

@@ycft I hate that stupid critical term "elevated horror" as if artistic horror films were nonexistent before A24 films. Horror movies have only in recent times become acceptable to the critical community because it's a younger audience that grew up with horror in the 80s and 90s and don't see the genre as just exploitation films. Let's just keeping calling these works "Horror Films" please and let Time be the judge of their being "elevated" or not.

@@guillermo9631 It has already gotten to the point where the term is a bit of a joke, and critics haven't realized that yet. It'll be interesting to see when audiences turn against A24, like they do with most studios. They're been putting out some good projects but all it takes is a bad year.

@@ycft Of course. These things run in cycles. Eventually they'll be a cultural backlash against the genre but that's fine; I always felt horror should be a transgressive artform that challenges societal norms. Remember Cronenberg's early 70s/80s films were constantly attacked by the critics until he was deemed "respectable" by them later on.
