Native American Style Flute music and photos of Western US scenery
I’ve played the Native American Style Flute for more than twenty years. I’ve attended schools and festivals, listened to music by Native peoples, and traveled and read about the Western US. This is a remarkably flexible indigenous instrument. The styles of flutes and flute playing it inspires has opened a world of joy and satisfaction to me and many others.
Some of this music is available on my SoundCloud channel. Most are under a Creative Commons (attribution) license. Some tracks are copyrighted. Be sure to check the status of the track you’re reusing or sampling.
I owe a great deal to my mentors and teachers on this journey. They include William (Bill) Hughes, Clint Goss and Vera Shanov, Betina Lindsey, Cornell Kinderknecht, Scott August, Joe Young, Rona Yellowrobe, Joe Moreno and Jonny Lipford. There are too many makers to mention. Each track includes their name and type of flute, if known, in the description.

Winter in the West Extended Play Album: Native American Style Flute Shorts Music
This collection of music is inspired by the scenery of the US Mountain West. The tracks In order:
Winter in the West: one of my first videos with Western scenery and Native flute music turned into a short.
The Kauri Flute: A bass C minor flute and Western scenery.
Little Steps: A labyrinth in a year-round desert garden accompanied by a Native style flute.
All the Colors: Another early video with flute music at Zion National Park.
Each track started as a video that became a UA-cam short. This transformation lets me re-edit the photos and remaster the sound. The shorts in this extended video are as tight and precise as I can get them. More on each short is found in the description for the corresponding long version on my channel page.
An “extended play album” is a collection of 3 to 6 tracks less than 30 minutes long in total, that is, shorter than an LP. If you do not generally listen to music in the form of shorts, an extended play album sequences several related shorts for a cumulative effect. I call my shorts “Relax for a Minute Music.” I’m interested to discover how you like this format.

Sacred Walls: Bass Native American Style Flute in Canyonlands
Переглядів 169 годин тому
Different people have different definitions of the sacred. For some there are clear physical boundaries between the sacred and the profane. For others the sacred is invoked by awe in any place. No version is more true. The important thing is not to put up walls between different definitions of the sacred. For some, the walls themselves are sacred. Canyonlands is a vast stretch of red rock count...
Powwow Flute: Native American Style Flute and Drum Music

The hand drums used in a powwow setting can be carried and played in the dance circle. They also accompany singing, particularly by women who support the stirring music of the men’s ceremony societies playing the big standing drums. If you’ve never been to a fair-sized powwow, especially an intertribal one, go. You’re in for a treat. The two-sided drum with a Mimbres-like rabbit design was made...

Cloudy Mountain Air: Drone Native American Style Flute Music

The mountains of Nevada are as foggy and mysterious as any-some of the time. This eerie drone music fits well with their moods. The flute is by Guillermo Martinez of Quetzalcoatl Flutes. It’s an F# minor 432 hz Maya drone in Alaskan Yellow Cedar with walnut blocks, cedar shoes, and an inlay of an unidentified blue iridescent stone, a color well loved among the Zuni. It has a deceptively restrai...

My Kind-Hearted Boy: A Native American Style Drone Flute plays Lakota Lullaby
Переглядів 22121 день тому
Čhanté Wašté Hokšíla is a traditional Lakota lullaby, here played on a drone flute. The earliest recording I’ve found is sung and played on the Native American flute by Robert Tree Cody. For my own interpretation I used a recent transcription by Linthicum Blackhorse, Lakota composer and music historian. I changed the endings to the second and third chorus to accommodate the Native American Styl...

Somehow the double-barreled or drone flute seems to me to fit in with the red rock landscape of the desert.
I had a discussion this week about what is sacred. Nothing got solved, and it seemed too simple to say “everything.” I want to say attitude, or posture, or performance, but all these words have been corrupted. It’s somewhere between the walls and a really hard place to describe.
The drum sound in this track came from the red hand drum. The flute tune is an effort to recreate the sound of women’s voices surrounding the drum circle. Flutes were not traditionally played with drums at a powwow, but if they were played at all their tunes were often derived from vocal music.
Always love to see and hear your videos! Thank you brother! 🙏💚🌟
@@RozaTruchinski247 I’m always glad to see your comments, @RozaTruchinski!
These are some of my most popular music videos. They represent some of the best scenery in the Mountain West. Thank you for your loyalty and support!
After a rain, sandstone acts like an aquifer, soaking up water and changing colors as it does so. Eventually the sandy sponge evaporates its moisture and changes back again.
Canyonlands in Utah is huge, varied and spectacular. The native flute is the right sound for its simple grandeur.
Tourist gifts of the 1990s in Slovakia were still made by artists’ collectives like Ulúv. Embroidered linen was popular, as were round yellow and purple ceramic flasks with little feet. These were purchased in ski and spa towns in the Tatra Mountains.
In Yellowstone you can see wildlife up close and also historic evidence of Native peoples hunting for food. Yellowstone is a paradise five months of the year for all living things.
This bass C walnut side-blown flute is one of my favorites. I can play it for hours since Bill Hughes made it so comfortable for me. I’m a big fan of custom-fitted larger flutes.
This backing track inspired the melody. It took a few revisions to get the audio up to standard. Each time I post music in different forms, long, extended play, long short and short, it gets better. The process can take as long as a year.
These tunes were for the most part recorded a while ago so they have an old-timey feel for me, like a duet sung on a variety TV show. Garland and Streisand. Burnett and Andrews. Cole and Cole. Does that seem strange?
This is the tune that convinced me of the sheer power of the drone flute. I love the pulse that comes from the two barrels vibrating slightly out of sync. They’re supposed to be exactly harmonious, but nothing powerful ever is.
How do you fit a three-minute song into a one-minute format? You don’t, unless you take out the repeats and middle sections giving the melody its drama. But I saved the climax of this tune for the short version. See the longer video for the whole thing.
These are some of my favorite flutes, the ones I reach for. I’ll wake up often with a tune in my head, usually a popular or familiar tune, but when I play through the flute it becomes an improvised original melody. This phenomenon is called audiation, and it’s now getting attention in music education.
Drone flutes are a little harder to play. You have to keep the airflow constant and be very aware of your breath and mouth control. The reach around the barrels is greater as well. I’m not sure I could play a drone bigger than this one easily.
I’ve come to appreciate places in the desert where plants are cultivated, especially those native to the climate. They hold a stark beauty of their own and teach lessons about surviving in difficult conditions.

It took a kind-hearted friend and a little research to find this lullaby. I must go back to the well occasionally and this is a fine well.

@@SuseV8 There’s a lot here. The Phrygian scale is popular among jazz and rock musicians, and it is used in movies where an “orientalist” vibe is needed. SoundCloud requires a sign-up to comment, I believe. I post much more frequently here, for now. You may be thinking of several composers whose backing tracks I play with; Richard Brooner, Peter Dubner, Dave Tate. The flute community shares by exchanging and recirculating flutes. My mentor Bill Hughes teaches flute making to vets and distributes flutes, so every flute is matched with its proper person. Whew! I like answering questions!

This curious bird was found in Oak Creek Canyon between Flagstaff and Sedona.
I’m personally crazy about agave plants, and I appreciate and respect cacti. Agaves were cultivated by ancient Sinagua people in central Arizona for such cultural uses as soap and thread for hairdressing. An ancient agave field however doesn’t look as uniform and organized as, say, a mescal field in Mexico. It’s identified by the number of plants, the cultivars, the hybrids, and the location in the microclimate. The work of archaeobotanist Ron Parker has secured the agave cultivation hypothesis.
I recorded the drone flute on a Tascam DR 40X with dual mics for an enhanced stereo effect. The Tascam was an incredibly thoughtful and useful gift that came just in time to record the first sounds of the drone. The DAW is Hokusai 2, designed originally for voice but perfect for flute.
The “Indianist” musical movement started around 1900 with parlor songs and operettas written by non-Natives in what they considered to be an Indian style. The influences came from ethnomusicologists working mostly in Minnesota, the Dakotas, and California. You can hear hints of it in big band music of the 40s (“Sing, Sing, Sing”), early Disney (Peter Pan) and television (Howdy Doody). Technically, non-traditional music made by non-Natives using Native motifs, rhythms and tonalities, like most of the tracks here, are also “Indianist.”
The Hopi traditionally played very different flutes. They were rim-blown tubes with a painted bell at the end, more like an “Anasazi” flute. This flute has generalized Hopi designs like a katsina mask, pueblos and corn leaves, but is constructed like a traditional Plains plate flute. Doc Payne, an avid flute collector, argued that Plains flutes were traded pre-contact at Taos Pueblo, introducing a Plains influence to Southwestern native culture. Whether he was correct or not, this flute reflects that speculation.
Hohle Fels, the site of a cave in Germany, had several important artifacts including figurines. The flute found there has only one competitor for first flute, a cave bear bone flute with four holes from the Divje Babe (Wild Women) site in Slovenia. The jury’s out whether that piece of hollow bone was bitten hard by, say, a hungry wolf to make the holes, and later only later discovered to make sound. But there’s no doubt the Hohle Fels flute with its beveled, finger-shaped pentatonic tuning holes was deliberately crafted to create music.
This album has gotten the most views of any so far. I’m really glad since it’s not conventional music for the Native American flute. There’s a huge flute culture in Central and Eastern Europe, including the fujara, pistalka, kaval and ney, all wooden traditional instruments. Enjoy!
I love this , pure simple flute .
Thank you so much! Rimblown flutes are the hardest for me to play. Anything that comes out has to be simple! 😊

This is one of Andrew Begay’s earliest flutes. You can see the patience that went into every carving.
Drones or double flutes have two or more barrels or tubes, one making a droning sound in harmony with the tune. The results are rich and eerie. These Singing Tree drones were custom crafted by Michael Medina. He’s now a famous maker. Thanks, Michael.
