Carpathian Mode: Fascinating Music on a Native American Style Flute (rev.)

  • Don’t click away quite yet. The sound might draw you in. This song is in what is called the Carpathian mode, more formally known as the Ukranian Dorian scale. This scale is based in Central Europe and is used in klezmer music and Bulgarian women’s choirs. Full of flattened pitches, it requires playing a repeated half-holed second interval on a Native American Style Flute. Let me tell you, it’s not easy, but it’s worth it for that melancholy, half harmonic, half dissonant sound.
    The flute is my high C minor cedar Thunder Bear by Randy Starnes. The textiles were made by the Uluv collective and brought back from 1990s Slovakia. The mountains are local to the Western US but for the purpose of this video represent the High Tatras. The video is revised to include more pictures and a cleaner soundtrack.

    I hope it’s okay I remastered and reissued this video. I was encouraged by likes on the previous version and I thought the music held up pretty well. Hope you “like” it. (That’s a pun!)
