Chris Stokes: A Nerd Reborn
Приєднався 18 чер 2013
Writer and comedian but most importantly - a nerd reborn!
OK fine, I admit - I never stopped being one but, things is... I've spent the last ten or so years pretty much keeping it to myself.
And I kind of just want to geek out again - so no more!
Now there'll be no shutting me up and here you'll find me geeking out in many different forms including various lengthy marathons through things I love, reactions to certain nuggets of nerdy news, reviews of things I'm itching to talk about plus lots of other stuff sprinkled about such as clips from gigs I've done or sketches I've filmed.

MURDER BY FISH! | The Hildebrand Rarity | James Bond 007 Supermarathon | Short Story Review
The final story in the For Your Eyes Only collection combines the formula breaking of Quantum of Solace with the proactivity we've come to know from James Bond.
Finding himself on a hunt for a rare fish with one of the most horrible characters he has yet encountered, Bond becomes embroiled in a murder on a luxury yacht.
So who did it?

One of Doctor Who's Most Beloved Stories | Pyramids of Mars | Doctor Who Marathon From The Beginning

I begin this video with a quick discussion about this era of the show's reputation vs my own perception of it and how this era, maybe more than any other, is difficult to discuss dispassionately, so revered is it as "The Best". And Pyramids of Mars feels like the story to have that discussion given it is routinely voted as one of the very best stories ever and I have a slightly differing view. ...

Happy Global James Bond Day! With two marathons running concurrently, I've shuffled the order of uploads around a little so that a Bond marathon video drops today, 62 years since the premiere of the first Bond movie Dr No. And hurtling towards the end of the For Your Eyes Only short story collection we hit Risico, one of the last remaining unused Fleming titles. Forming half of the film For You...

With Harry gone (for the time being) we're guided by just the Fourth Doctor and Sarah for the first time and their rapport being what it is, combined with Elisabeth Sladen's excellently judged navigation of the change in leading men, it feels precisely like the same two characters we followed in Season Eleven. But with Season Eleven being a tricky one for me, is that necessarily a good thing? D...

The third Bond short story is an outlier among outliers. There has not been another Bond story like this on the marathon so far. In 1960 Fleming collated 5 short stories into a collection called 'For Your Eyes Only', some of these based on plots he'd developed for a James Bond television series which ultimately didn't happen. So it seems I have much more to say about this one than I thought I would... Tom Baker is quite possibly the most iconic Doctor of all. In 1970 Doctor Who underwent several massive changes, not least another change in the lead actor. But just because the Doctor had been successfully recast before didn't necessarily mean it would work again. Luckily, they cast a man who didn't seem to let that faze him at all. Jon Pertwee waltzed into the show and made it his own so incredibly quickly that he probably had the most assured start ...

Planet of the Daleks | Doctor Who From The Beginning | Warming Throwback Or Huge Step Backwards?
Death to the Daleks is an underrated classic for me. Is it the greatest Dalek Story? No, but I find it a fun watch. Highlights for me include Daleks: "The Earth Creatures are to be Exterminated fire at my command" Earth creatures: "Wait a minute, wait you Can't" Daleks "Total Extermination fire fire fire"......Yeah we can't be half exterminating them now can we? bloody earth creatures deserve the Full extermination. Toy Tardis? I could Just imagine the Daleks having these on a toy assembly line "Human Female has escaped I have failed self destruct" Dalek shouldn't be so hard on itself The Dalek having its Exterminator stolen makes me laugh
I actually liked this one. It was in fact one of the first Baker stories I watched.
My biggest issue with Season 8 is simply that it contains 5 of the only 8 Roger Delgado Master stories we ever had all in a row. It’s always one that tends to do significantly worse in the context of a marathon than as just watching stories in a random order (as I usually do) for that very reason. That is, each story is excellent on its own merits, certainly enough to all be enjoyable contributions to the show; the problem stems entirely from the fact that "Oh, look! It’s the Master!" every time makes it look like the production team were running out of ideas already in only their first full season in charge of the show.
I do always feel like this is one of those stories that tends to be considered better than it actually is simply because it introduces two of the most popular recurring characters in the show (the Master and Jo Grant). If this had been just a story that happened to use them both rather than the one that introduced them, then it would never been as highly-regarded as it is. (The other example that springs to mind would be _The Time Warrior_ for introducing them Sontarans and Sarah Jane Smith. Again, on its own merits, it does feel like just generic DW rather than one of the best stories the show has to offer, and its high rating is almost entirely down to its introducing a popular recurring villain and companion.)
My auntie was a huge Who fan and Hartnell was her Doctor. She idolised him and whenever she visited in the early 70s (When I was into Jon) I would pump her for as much information as possible about past stories. She loved Galaxy 4, anything with The Daleks, and her all time favourite was The Celestial Toymaker. However, this one she had zero memory of 🙁. It was round about the time of the Radio Times Anniversary Special magazine and she would often look at the section with all the old stories broken down. So, she would sit there and say “Yes, that one was great” “That one was a bit slow” etc but not The Massacre. Strangely enough though, she remembered The Myth Makers very well 🤷♂️ This time I’ve listened to the audio Ive missed Vicki. Wish she had stayed until the end of Season 3. Her relationship with the Doctor was beautiful. Hartnells end speech. Wow. And it doesn’t need Murray Gold slathering the scene with obtrusive and OTT emoti-strings. Just the actor and his lines. Perfect.
Your eyes are absolutely captivating. 🤩
I was lucky enough to be old enough to have watched this period of Doctor Who as it was broadcast. At the time the show was always seen, by my friends and myself, as a bit rubbish. I hid the fact I watched it lol 😂. But I never saw it as anything amazing. So as I watch it now, my defence of it, is massively coloured by nostalgia. I love the Tom Baker era even though I started watching during the John Pertwee era. I will never understand how people get emotional over Doctor Who. We are all entitled to our opinion, and it is just an opinion. As an adult, an older adult, enjoy Doctor Who but a lot of the time it is an ironic enjoyment lol 😂. I have fun with the show and I think that the best way to watch it, in my opinion. I don’t always agree with you, sometimes I absolutely disagree with you, but so what! We both enjoy the show, isn’t that the main thing?
The Underwater Menace is much maligned. And while certainly not Troughton's finest is a worthy and intriguing inclusion to the pantheon.
Happy new year Chris, I hope you're doing good
Miss Hawthorne is a carbon copy of Madame Arcati from Blythe Spirit. She’s even wearing Margaret Rutherfords favourite cloak lol 😂
I think of this story as a light, amusing palette-cleanser preparing us for the moist lushiousness of "Terror of the Zygons"... Which of course was originally meant to start immediately the following week (and run for 6 parts). =:o} It's a real shame the decision to shift Season 13 forward to start in September - which necessitated shortening Season 12 - wasn't made soon enough for GotD and RotC to be swapped around. But with the strongly serialised approach to Season 12 and thus the elements of the transmat & Time Ring replacing the absent TARDIS in GotD (and the notorious difficulty of getting timely re-writes, or even just approval for rewrites by the script editor, from Terry Nation!), this wasn't possible at such a late stage of production. It's also a shame that Robert Holmes - who had to majorly re-work Gerry Davis's original scripts - didn't have time to dig a bit more into the Cybermen's origins and realise how right up his street as they *could* be: He always loved body horror, and themes of possession and de-humanisation, so I'm sure if a Cyberman story had been commissioned by him & Philip for season 13, rather than by Terrance and Barry for season 12, he would have been able to work with Gerry to develop something closer to the calibre of GotD.
Whoa, this is getting out of hand, The Pyramids of Mars is unquestioningly one of the best Who stores ever written. You do realize this opinion put you in the minority on the show, just saying.
This is the first 'Doctor Who' adventure I watched fifty years ago and I thought it was perfect at the time. I now have a couple of niggles: the first is there is no mention of the Daleks having an anti-grav capability (yes, the defeated by stairs problem) so how do they traverse a devastated battlefield post nuclear and with contemporary shell holes and trenches and secondly how do the four or five Daleks that Davros has operational commit the genocide of thousands of Thals as a couple of Thals could just creep up behind a Dalek with an explosive device and that would be that?
Bakers run as the Doctor is an embarrassment of riches. Genesis of the Daleks, The Ark in Space, Pyramids of Mars and yes Terror of Zygons, the list is endless. Not only the best Who stories but some of most entertaining TV in history. 🖐️👍

Season 12 is definitely transitional, with Hinchcliffe and Holmes obliged to work for much of the season with stories that had been set up by their predecessors. However, I think that after Robot there is a clear change in tone. The Ark in Space does hark back to the Troughton era in some ways, but it feels a lot more adult and horrific and for me it lays down the template for how the new production team would approach the show. The shift in tone persists through Sontaran Experiment and Genesis, with Revenge being the only story post-Robot that genuinely feels like a throwback to an earlier era - with Gerry Davis on scripting duties, that was perhaps no great surprise.
A bunch of the earlier drama's are available for free on spotify btw.
Bakers time as the Doctor wins hands down. I actually bought the dvd of this story here in the states when it was released some years back. At the time I was a little underwhelmed, but having rewatched it recently I realized it’s actually one of the best Bake stories.
I generally agree with your assessment of this one. I don’t think it helps that Terrance Dicks was playing it safe by plonking the new Doctor in a story that his predecessor would have been right at home in. While this does achieve the objective of reassuring viewers that it is still the same show, just with a new lead, coming off the back of the uninspired second half of Season 11 it does reinforce the feeling that Who was getting a bit tired at this point and in need of new creative direction. Barry Letts and Dicks had both done sterling work on the show, but arguably they stayed one year too long and it was definitely time for change in the production office. For me, Robot just feels like a Pertwee hangover; it is with the next story, with the new producer and script editor getting a firm grip of the show, that the fourth Doctor’s era truly begins. Having said that, I think Tom pretty much finds his Doctor instantly, and his anarchic, alien interpretation of the role makes an incredibly refreshing change after Pertwee’s more patrician take, and the feeling I had in his last few stories that he was starting to go through the motions a bit. Tom seizes the role with both hands, and in my view makes it his own more quickly than just about any other Doctor.
Well, I guess I am now past your point (publicly at least) in the marathon and I will add my Season 13+ reviews on your future recaps. Season 13 is my favorite in the show so far this marathon so I'm definitely looking forward to the 2nd half of your season 13 reviews. Hope to see them soon (ish?).
You need to remember that season 7 was largely set up influenced by Innes Lloyd and team. Spot the major uniform change for unit and "sacking" of Caroline John (Liz Shaw). Exactly the same thing happened in season 12/13. It was pretty well all on the drawing board, designed and scripted by Letts and Dicks. Hinchcliffe and Holmes didn't really get a chance to remake the series in their image until the second story of season 13. Why the second story? Terror of the Zygons was a season 12 story that got held over to the following season. Although they were responsible for outworking the previous team's vision, it's not really fair to blame them for any shortcomings. Also, i don't actually agree with you. I love season 12. I was 9 years old when it was broadcast and it was fantastic....and still is.
@@martins8587 I'm not really blaming them for anything, just observing that I don't think they're as confident at the very beginning as is often made out. The incoming team for 7 made, in my opinion, a far more confident season than the incoming team for 12. You point out that circumstances were largely similar, catching a ball fielded by someone else, and I just think there's a confidence in Letts, Dicks and Pertwee that isn't really there with Hinchcliffe, Holmes and Baker straight away. I'm glad you enjoy Season 12 so much, I wish I could myself but I don't find it the stellar beginning to a golden era that many seem to
@chris_stokes Lovely to hold a difference of opinion on social media without it getting nasty. Thank you! 🙏
The biggest advantage The Silurians have is that a valid scientific hypothesis is named after them ;)
Actually the analog that came to mind for me was Star Trek's Federation based on the UN.
6:27 Yeah but also, Tibetan Nationals were not common in the UK back then. Tibetan actors? errr...hello, I think not! Remember the Beeb were a cash-strapped outfit and worked to schedules as tight as their budgets. If they had a decent actor on hand with a good range who could play a make-do Tibetan monk good enough for Saturday night family entertainment, that was what we got. At this time a British fellow calling himself "T. Lobsang Rampa" wrote a successful series of books (allegedly factual) about life in a Tibetan monastery. He conned thousands of people as this was pre-internet and most people had little knowledge of such remote locations. Context, Chris! So while as a modern Liberal Progressive it is very easy to feel uncomfortable about having white guys playing Far-East characters, context is important. They did their best with what they had to work with. No offence, arrogance, or racism was intended.
The Sontaran facial realism degraded over the Baker years but improved in the 21st. century appearances. I remember the shock-value seeing Linx removing his helmet for the first time in The Time Warrior. He looked so realistic.
Back around 1978 or 79 I went to a small science fiction convention put on by our local college at the student center. There was maybe 150 people there in total for the one day event. There was a small dealer room, they had a costume contest and a couple of rooms set up showing films. One room was showing Doctor Who on a 20" CRT TV in a room with about 20 chairs. I thought, "I read about this show in Famous Monsters magazine, let's check it out." They're showing The Giant Robot, Tom Baker's first story. I come in somewhere in the middle of it. I sit through about 15 minutes and have to get up and leave. Im too distracted, I cant tell what anyone is talking about, the TV is too small and Im too far away, people keep walking in and out, etc. They would eventually show the series on our local PBS station as well, a few years later and I really got into it. To this day, however, The Giant Robot is still my least favorite episode.
There is only one Master, and that is Delgado. No one else came close to the dark charisma and complex layers of intellect and villainy that Delgado brought to the character.
This is my favourite Doctor Who story!
0:39 It’s funny you say that given it was originally submitted for Season 2 (and rejected because the Krotons were deemed too similar to the Mechonoids)!
1:12-1:34, 2:30-2:57, 6:53-7:12, 7:42-7:51, 7:53-8:07, 8:31-8:50, 10:36-11:07, 13:53-14:13 You’d probably enjoy the stories even more of you watched the official animations, which are in colour!
13:39 The info text does explain that oddity perfectly, but I’ll leave it up to them to tell you.
7:09, 8:39-9:18 Those sections aren’t from the official animation. That is in colour. Those clips are black-and-white.
12:50 "And that gives Noah himself a really good Ark" 😆
Roger Delgado was the definitive Master. Played the role seriously and had the right blend of intellect and callousness.
Just checking in to see if you are ok. I miss your videos on Doctor Who and James Bond. I hope everything is all right.
Where are you man? I miss your videos!
I always prefer the animations given that it’s a TV show, not a radio programme.
Although The Sea Devils has an edge from a production point of view, I think The Silurians has the superior script. The moral dilemma the Doctor faces in both stories is dealt with far more dramatically and powerfully in The Silurians, whereas in the sequel it feels like Hulke is paying lip service to it, dismisses it quite quickly and is overall far more interested in the Doctor-Master relationship. The Silurians has better characterisation too, with pretty much all the characters feeling fully fleshed out and three dimensional. Walker is a crude, faintly unbelievable caricature by contrast - it’s surprising Hulke created him, as normally he excelled at writing more ambiguous, real-seeming people.
60th Anniversary Doctor Who Marathon...Take 2 "Season 12" Nope, not dead. And I haven't abandoned this Anniversary marathon either. Got poor mental health at the moment, and that translates into doing whatever brings me joy at a particular moment (that is when I can bring myself to watch anything period). TV stories Genesis of the Daleks (10/10) The Ark in Space (8/10) Robot (6/10) The Sontaran Experiment (4/10) Revenge of the Cybermen (4/10) Genesis is a near perfect origin story and better than what the Daleks deserve. Wasn't impressed by the Thals though this time around. It's kinda nice to know that the Earth (given enough time) is resilient enough to come back from the brink multiple times. And the Wirrn were genuinely creepy. The best thing about Robot was the introduction to the 4th Doctor and Harry Sulliven. The Sontatan Experiment honestly felt long and filler-like even though it was only a 2 parter. Also, sick and tired of the mistaken intentions trope (the Doctor being accused of murder). I don't know what those metal life forms were but they weren't Cybermen. Too emotional for one thing. Tom Baker has already sold me on his Doctor. I can't say where he ranks this early on, but he's definitely threatening Pertwee. For whom ends up being a single season companion, I really liked Harry Sullivan. His acting was top tier and he's definitely useful. That being said, it seemed like the show itself was trying to dismiss him and question his intelligence. Kinda similar to another male companion much later on (Rory....spoilers). The best TARDIS ally this season...is difficult. Maybe Commander Stevenson from Revenge of Cybermen. Greatest villain goes to Nyder from Genesis. Big Finish .......... Big Finish? What Big Finish? What extremely few there are for this season are generally just remakes of this season's stories. And I don't have any of them. That being said, this was a really tight season that there really isn't room for other story possibilities. Companion rankings Jo Vicki Brigadier Jamie Zoe Ian Chesterton Steven Taylor Harry Sullivan Polly Barbara Wright Benton Liz Sarah Jane Victoria Ben Oliver Sara Susan Dodo Katarina Yates Yep, Sarah Jane dipped lower in the companion rankings this season. Was frequently annoying and nearly always looked like she was about to burst into tears.
Absolutely loving the marathon can't wait for more
I don't think it is polite to make fun of Berry Nelson like this. Look at the time and look at the available resources on the tiny TV screen 70 years ago. On the top of it, what was "James Bond" character itself in those days? It was not known to more than a few.
This is my favourite Doctor Who story of all time. Hard to explain exactly why. It just is. "You'll never get inside this base!" "We are in it already."
In 1974 this was a landmark moment and a source of sorrow to those of us who loved the third Doctor. A lot of us never recovered. But the fourth Doctor and Sarah went on to be magnificent!
Season 3 is probably my least favourite, but that’s more that it’s the one where I’m spending more time listening to episodes than I am watching them than it is an actual true opinion.
This was certainly the story that suffered most from having missing episodes, given just how much it uses visuals to tell itself!
