A low point for me too this story - when I plod through this story on my own marathons, I pick up instead on the costumes, novel hair of the miners, Elizabeth Sladen's performance, the Queen's purple and always nice to see the hexapod. That just about gets me through.
I saw this before Curse Of Peladon when I was four so loved it at the time and for some reason I edited out of my memory the weaker points of these stories so was quite surprised when I rewatched this years later as an adult. Personally I don’t feel that Pertwee went of the boil at any point in his later seasons. Pertwee interpretation of the role had a very strong presence and identity that still overshadows many of the later incarnations. For me, the casting of the first four Doctors were the most inspired choices for role.
I loved the Monster on Peladon target novel as a kid. When I finally watched it on VHS I still loved the story. It's often disliked but I find it enjoyable and holds my attention.
Big Finnish Audio, has returned to Peladon, and a few novels with other future Doctor's. I've not experienced many of these, maybe 3. And, this story could loose at least two episodes. There are a few elements that I like, Sarah Jane, keeping the Martians until mid-point,....yet, I agree with your review. I believe the VHS of this story was one of the first to not be kept in stock, and fans had to pay big money if they really wanted it.
One of the best parts of the original Paeledon story was the suberversion of making the Ice Warriors the good guys. Making their people feel more indepth rather than just being generic doctor who bad guy Aliens. Aaaaand then this story comes around and screews that all up by making them the generic evil Doctor Who Aliens again
This one was definitely a step down from Curse of Peladon, but it was solidly the middle of the road for me. Sarah and the Doctor do well in this at least. Just another in a row of good ideas, bad execution imo
Let's do the exact same thing as last time, only longer and with all the interesting twists reversed. Two stories in a row that are just repeating themselves. I suppose we can be grateful that Death to the Daleks wasn't six episodes long. After one of the best series ever it's hard not to feel that everyone's given up and we have a show in desperate need of reinvention. Luckily...
@@lukethomas216 Well, both of those decisions are wrong. _Death to the Daleks_ is a series forming part of Season 11, just as it has been ever since it was first conceived in 1973. This is because that was how the TV industry worked in 20th-century Britain.
I think that with maybe a tighter focus and losing 2 episodes, "Monster" could have told one of two really good stories: either factionalism Among the Ice Warriors, or how membership of the Federation was driving social change, but with the miners feeling left behind. Unfortunately it tries to do both, with a bit of Scooby-Doo thrown in, and fails. Easily the low point of season 11 for me.
The most redundant story of all time. It's too similar to the original, but not as good - and now dragged over six episodes! It's production code says it all - YYY. Still, it's not terrible - just pointless and very skippable. Al least it's argueably the last really dull Doctor Who story until Underworld. That "awful" guard is Terry Walsh - Doctor Who legend.
Always thought that this was the most pointless Doctor Who story ever! Only there, as Terrance Dicks would say, to avoid BBC1 being forced to play the test card on six Saturday evenings!
You get to see Sarah think the Doctor is dead not once, but twice in the same story. The mining unionizing stuff is kind of cool. And so is the very childishly handled feminism. But it's so recycled and so unimpressive a story, with less going on in six parts than the first Peladon story had in 4, it just really barely floats. Still, it's not the worst of Who to me. It's still charming and fun enough despite all its faults to make sense to me as 3-5 out of 10 rating. Which I suppose is what a 2 out of 5 is. But it does rate the lowest of any Third Doctor era story to me. The real stinkers of the 70s in Who mostly come from a few of the big failures in the Graham Williams era. Letts and Dicks generally really maintained a steady boat with entertaining episodes. The highs of the Tom Baker era are often higher too though, for me.

Oh no! The Badger Hair. I had forgotten how bad that looked.

Good point lo l
Chris I’m feeling the same right now rewatching all of classic who
I'd turn up to my own wedding in some jogging bottoms and a sloppy shirt but I always show up to Marathon Man wearing a full Dolce suit.
Second best outfit next to the purple one. Most positive I can be.

The King's champion had a bigger part in the prequel, here his equivalent dies quite early 🎩
There isn’t a prequel.
A painful second half of the series. Not as bad as Death to the Daleks tho’! 😬

I consider that an American term and don’t use it when discussing a British tv show from the seventies.

I’m one of those heretics that prefers Monster to Curse.
strongest contender thus far for 1 star. semi-surprised it didn't get it
