Weeds Are In The Eye Of The Beholder
Переглядів 5374 години тому
I just don't see weeds anymore. The Sheep and Goats will make a profit from these "weeds" instead of me spending time and money trying to get rid of them. By the way, that never works. We put sheep and goats on other people's property to keep the "weeds" to a manageable degree. The best way to make money is to take an expense and make it a profit. You get a double profit. Learn how to do this i...

Custom Grazing Cattle With Small Ruminants
Переглядів 68621 годину тому
There is an opportunity to custom graze cattle behind your small ruminants as they eat the weeds and leave good cattle forage. There is usually good forage left when it is time to move your goats and sheep because of parasite issues. Use this free leftover forage to make money. Goat & Sheep Grazing School Sept. 12-13. We will talk about this opportunity and how to place your Goats with other pe...

What Not to Do

It is a good idea and a bad idea, to rotate goats regularly to new pastures. Good for parasite control but bad for stressing the Nannies. I just proved it to myself again that it can be done if you let them move themselves.

    Be careful about grazing drought stressed weeds. Nitates can get to high. I have lost ewes that grazed stressed lambs quarters.

    Greg, love seeing all the diversity of nutrient dense forage! It truly is a beautiful sight once your lens has changed that you see the pasture through. It would be great for those folks who may not have the experience to see the follow up once they’ve been in for your grazing duration. Folks are always amazed when I show them what the sheep will eat. (And I believe you are correct on those goldenrod.) Hope you and Dale have a successful school! If it wasn’t so far I’d stop by.

    I’d like to broadcast some cover crops (oats, rye, wheat and/or barley) seed on a former 43-acre cornfield in Pennsylvania later this month (August). Other than grazing the weeds for a year or so since the corn was taken off and frost seeding some red clover, no other seeding, amendments or tillage has been done to this field. I’m hoping that over time the natural seed bank will ignite and provide a diverse pasture. We are rotationally grazing cattle, sheep and goats on this pasture; the stock is typically moved daily. Mostly goldenrod and clover dominate the pasture. There is a fair amount of uncovered bare ground. Given our relatively limited budget and the use of a 4-wheeler broadcast spreader, I’m thinking about lightly broadcast seeding oats and rye, with hopes of filling in the bare ground spots, improving the soil and proving some fall and spring grazing forage. 1. Does this approach sound reasonable? 2. What seeding rate of oats and rye might you suggest so as to not choke out what’s already growing? 3. Is there a perennial seed I might want to add to this mix or apply separately or would it be better to broadcast the perennial in the spring? 4. Any other suggestions? Thank you very much.

    Trying to learn more about how donkey’s work as guardians. When our goats kid, at least one dog will be with mom as she kids, and they stay with the kids until it can be moving with the tribe. Our dogs can smell predators very well, they get very proactive about keeping predators away.

    If the grass gets ahead of you, is it better to clip it to keep the taller material from browning up or is it okay to let it grow high and brown up until the next round of grazing?

    • @grandviewlivestock3936
      @grandviewlivestock3936 26 днів тому

      That may depend on when your next grazing will be and how much you like to run a bush hog. For me, we do not mow it. We do not own a mower. We have so much else to do that it wouldn't get done anyway. But that is not to say that it wouldn't be a good idea. You would probably have to test the grass, then mow, let it grow back, and test it again to see if the food value gained enough to be worth it to you.

    Do you ever put your herd in pastures with Johnson Grass? I know the Sorghum x Sudan is related to Johnson, but my sheep absolutely hate Johnson grass & I can't figure out why. Right now I've got them out in a vineyard full of Johnson grass & they just eat the grape leaves & pick around the Johnson grass.

    Great video guys and awesome to see this great source of nutrients been utilized. We have developed a bucket attachment to break up this material to make it more free flowing and a lot easier and quicker to spread. As it avoids the pulsing and large lumps discharged out the back end. Check it out on our channel ua-cam.com/video/u_mb4ltTIXE/v-deo.htmlsi=jza_Qq7YULpMNw8c
