Feeding Hay? Your Not Necessarily a Bad Grazer

Don't believe those making blanket statements as if they are fact, about you can't feed hay and make any money. If you are feeding hay this time of year don't beat yourself up and think you're a bad grazer. To still have stockpile to graze this close to spring you will be understocked most of the rest of the year, in most cases. You must decide what is best and most economical for your operation. You must take into account the fertilizer value and the cost of the hay your feeding and the cost of feeding it, along with the value of the additional livestock you can run if you feed some hay during the winter non-grass growing months. You must do the math to find out what is most profitable for your operation.

I agree. Also you cant get stuck in one paradigm that you miss other opportunities. I know of one guy that feeds year around on pasture and tripled his stocking rate. You get taxed for the land you own and feed you can write that off and land prices are high and in some cases feeding can actually be cheaper than the land payment. Feeding isnt evil, but like you said Greg, you need to know your numbers. Thanks for all the tips and information you put out there.

Good points. Each situation and property is different. There is something to be said for both types of grazing. We practice our version of Adaptive Grazing and it's alot of testing and observing results and conditions especially at first. But the changes throughout the year mean you have to adapt your methods to maximize your yield and quality while minimizing waste. Then again we only have a handful of sheep.
