Oh, This Theme Music Has Another Meaning
This How To Train Your Dragon Theme has another meaning I missed last time I analyzed it. Thanks to "The Music Of The How To Train Your Dragon Trilogy" by Erik Heine, I've found some things that add new layers to this old theme.
This video looks at:
1. What makes it Hiccup's Theme
2. How John Powell uses it for other characters
3.Why it disappears and returns

    Great video, as always! There is another theme I would like to ask about that only occurs in HTTYD 2, and only occurs twice (to my knowledge): Hiccup the Chief and the end of Two New Alphas. Is there an official name for this theme? Seems like it plays during scenes that are related to Hiccup becoming chief.

    • @FilmScoreandMore
      @FilmScoreandMore День тому

      Yes, I plan to cover that one eventually. It’s simply the Hiccup The Chief theme for exactly that purpose. Powell used it as an example of how he scores character arcs instead of characters. Listen for it when Hiccup leaves Berk in search of Drago in “Drago’s Coming” and when he confronts Eret in the following scene.

      Reminds me of how in the series of Harry Potter movies, some of the most memorable melodies that Williams came up with in the first 3 films completely disappear within a few movies, which is a bit sad but also may fit the darkening tone of the films better. It's not like something as vital as Hedwig's theme is renounced entirely. But I also didn't really notice that some of these sounds were missing until someone pointed it out. You remember them so well it feels like they were there the whole time.

    What do you think about John Powell's strategy of using themes? Would you have guessed this is Hiccup's Theme?

    • @jjstarA113
      @jjstarA113 2 дні тому

      I actually love how Powell does themes because it allows for a lot of interesting narrative flexibility. In Pan (2015), there's a tune that seemingly represents Neverland ("Floating / Neverland Ahoy!") but is also used whenever Peter's mother is talked about; we later find out that she and Peter's birth father the Fairy Prince were FROM Neverland, so in coming to Neverland Peter is actually returning to his roots. I speculate then that this "Neverland / Mother" theme specifically represents "Peter's Roots", even hitting its zenith near the end of the film in "Transfiguration" when Peter sees a vision of his mother, who (I'm reading off Wikipedia here, only watched the movie twice 🙃) "reaffirms him to be Neverland's savior: Peter Pan."

      I believe it was to show off the perfect clean, coded, "utopia" Roz had come from. Round, crisp and clean, perfectly structured. The animals looked the way they did to show off their wild side, to give them more animalistic vibe. I personally loved the way both sides looked! I think the visuals added a LOT to all of their personalities. I also enjoyed Roz's visual development throughout the movie. @@FilmScoreandMore great video. I'm going to have to watch all of them to get more of your insights but for this particular conversation I mentioned Toothless' theme because it is always heard in some variation during scenes with toothless. During the test flight, you hear the main theme plus the flying ostinato layered on top of each other, but the real explosion comes when they head into a nose dive and hiccup loses his cheat sheet, he realizes that he has no choice but to trust toothless and work with him rather than try to control him, so when hiccup makes that connection, toothless feels the bond and they instantly connect and start to fly, at that moment is when we really hear the flying ostinato which, to me, indicates it's more about toothless. Then you hear the main theme layered underneath indicating the bond between them both. I hope that made sense lol.

      @jonbrown5041 I see what you’re saying. I think it’s less about one character here and more about the pattern and progression of the themes as a composition. The Flying Ostinato prefaces the Flying Theme at the start and end of the cue, it preps you for that big moment when they fly as one. And thanks for checking it out! I have a lot of these and they’re organized in playlists.

      @@FilmScoreandMore I also believe that there isn't a 100% intention for what the music is supposed to represent, I think it's designed so that the audience takes from it what most impacts them emotionally. The composers intentions are clear but not meant to force the viewer into thinking the way they do, much like how a piece of art influences people differently.

      @@jonbrown5041 Of course! I just prefer to present it this way because it's what John Powell and the now-published official sources reveal about the score, and because Powell has said he avoided the typical character leitmotif approach for the most part. Plus, I think what he did is so much more interesting.

    I originally thought this was a rip off and was kinda mad because Toothless' theme is a brilliant piece of music, as is the entire score of HTTYD, but the more I thought about it, I think it's an Easter egg and probably okayed by Powell because it's you character taming a great and dangerous beast. The more I thought about it, the more I thought it was a brilliant decision by the composers. I'm sure it was approved prior to release.

    • @FilmScoreandMore
      @FilmScoreandMore 25 днів тому

      It is so close to the Flying Ostinato that you'd think it would be okayed, but I've searched several times and I've still never found an official indication that they got permission. They could have, but I find it strange that there has never been an announcement of that from the game developers, the composers, DreamWorks/Universal, or John Powell.

Idk, I think they knew what they were doing, but whether it was approved by powell (or dreamworks if they own the rights) it's hard to say.

    I was kinda skeptical about watching this but now I really want to!! I do feel and enjoy the new animation style (or upgrade) of Puss in boots, bad guys and spider man. Especially puss in boots, it had a lot of vibrant colors and textures. With the wild robot I can see that being enhanced. Im glad the animators decided to look at the classics and find that simplicity and colors are some of the most important aspects of film. I remember my psychology class (which I may have mentioned in another video of yours lol) and we had to do a presentation. My partner and I (both film majors) decided to do about movies. I did the color aspect and music aspect. Definitely an eye opener on the affects of color. Also incredibly cool they are mimicking the paintings of Monet. Sorry this is really long I tend to nerd out lol

    This sort of hand-painted style isn't all that new; the 3D Clone Wars show uses a very similar animation style, with hand-painted textures and painted background plates and etc. It's not exactly the same - the Wild Robot is a bit more visibly hand-painted, and the clone wars typically shies away from shiny or reflective surfaces, but they are still very similar nonetheless.
