I've worked at Jags for many years and it's a bit unfair to put the v12 in here. They are technically advanced engines and were designed to be serviced regularly, when so they are fine units, however, when they get older servicing drops off as it is expensive and they begin to suffer problems. Keep your XJ12 well serviced and you should have few problems. At least they don't have wet belts driving their oil pumps.

Missing the Ford 4.3 V6. Used in the early 2000s in E series vans among other places. *500,000* is not uncommon for these engines, outliving the I-300 they replaced in Ford's engine lineup. It's not ucommon to have to get the TRANSMISSION rebuild twice before the engine needs a refresh.

The slant six was used in industrial applications also.The 4.0,piston skirts broke in the 1999 to 2004 years.Was repairable if caught in time replacing the piston.The 2v Ford modular engines are trash,one is they have oil pump problems seizing the bottom end up.See a lot of the Small Block Chevrolets in the older Ford street rods and hot rods due to them dirt cheap to build and much more easier to get parts for

There was one engine that had a horrible reputation and didn't make the list; the (1977) Chevy Vega all aluminum 4 cyl. They would overheat and seize up if stuck in traffic and cooling system wasn't in tip top shape. The Pontiac Astre engine was identical displacement and fit but cast iron so wss a repair possibility. GM trying to get better mileage. They finally succeeded with the Atlas series all aluminum engine in 2003.

How about the newer Ford Bronco total engine failures by 1,000 to 3,000 miles of driving? i think Ford has all engine manufacturers beat on their Bronco engines. These Bronco engines detonated at such low mileage from using crappy valve materials. Ford last in quality. I had a new 1968 Plymouth Valient, I ordered it with a 318 cubic inch engine, This engine never ran correctly, ran rough, dealer and Plymouth refused to fix it. I heard this was not the same 318 of previois years, evidently a 273 bored out to 318 became the 1968 318 version. It was a horror story. A few years later starting in 1972 I drove a new 318 Dodge 1/2 ton pickup for 63,000 miles, and loved it. I still wonder what the problem was with that 1968 Pymouth Valient 318 engine.

I have a 74 with an L82 350,4spd. Very peppy little car. Just switched to an HEI distributor and 2 2/2 in exhaust with Flowmaster FX mufflers and it really came alive. Good content. God bless.

A neighbor who lived across the street when I was growing up had a ‘62 that had the 361 V8. I went hunting with him one Saturday afternoon and was fascinated with the car. He demonstrated how powerful it was and also started off from a traffic light in 2nd gear then shifting to third. Years later I had a ‘67 Fury 2dr with the 318 2bbl 230hp engine. It would hit 117mph and did 0-60 in 7.5sec. It had a TorqueFlite automatic transmission and 2.71 rear end. It routinely got 20mpg on the interstate after speed limit was reduced to 55mph.

My dad had an orange 69’ bird with the 350HO. Loved that car.

Without a doubt, the original engine used in the Chevy Vega stands out as the worst ever installed in an American car. They typically failed at least once while still within the new vehicle warranty. Many Vegas had multiple engine swaps under warranty. In their day, it was common to see a stack of the scrapped engines behind the dealers' service buildings, often stacked all the way up the wall and many rows deep. Pontiac developed its own all-cast-iron 4 cylinder engine to use instead in its Astre model, but GM had taken such a black eye with their aluminum-block Vega engine that almost nobody wanted to take a chance on it.

Cars I've owned with 300,000 miles when sold 87 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe 2.3L 93 F150 5.0 Windsor 03 Ranger 4L OHC all ran great at time of sale.
