Tiny Camper Off Grid Camping Must Have, SPORTSMAN 800 Watt Inverter Generator!
We just said goodbye to our Harbor Freight 2000 watt generator and we said hello to our new Sportsman 800 watt inverter generator. For us, this is all the generator we need and it has done exactly what we needed a generator to do while we are camping off grid!

    Thanks for helping spend my money, Sam! Honestly, I had been looking for something like this for some time. I did invest in a 4Kw dual fuel generator, but it's as much for home backup as anything else. It won't run the big AC on top of the Class C, but for charging batteries and power stations it's great. It's especially useful here in the NE where sunshine isn't so plentiful at times. You get a gold medal! 🏅

    Thanks for getting this information out there. I have had a Honda 2000 for more than a decade, and it was a real lifesaver a time or two when the power was out at home for days in the winter. I have never taken it camping, though, because it is pretty heavy for me to lug around. This is a much more realistic size. It won't run my AC, but I don't camp much when it is really hot. Great video! Thanks for sharing! One word of caution regarding your solution to handle the water condensate and draining it into your fresh water tank. Under the right conditions, legionella bacteria can grow in the AC condensate water, which would then be draining into your fresh water tank where you would use it for showers or what not. This is potentially dangerous and could cause an unlucky person to develop legionnaires disease if the conditions are right (depends a lot on temperature, more likely in warm/hot weather conditions). Instead of draining into your freshwater tank, it might be safer to drain into a separate container that can be easily dumped and washed out thoroughly. Anyhow, thanks for the great ideas!

    A few thoughts. Those 5000 btu ACs need 500watts to run and that is lot for most off grid applications unless you run a loud generator. IMO, It would seem like if the A/C were just resting on the tongue it would be better location right? Here in Hot and humid Florida, I'm in a self converted micro campervan where my living/sleeping space is only 4x7x4 over a 6 inch foam mattress. I can't stand, but i can sit up and kneel up. 1/3 of my van is a semi sealed garage area in the back with a counter I access from the back outside. All appliances that generate heat and noise are back there facing the living space. That garage has a shared 10" vent hole and fan that runs 24x7. One appliance i have a is a 24v plastic 1800btu Chinese Air conditioner. It has no side vents. It sucks air the front and pushes out cold air. Hot air pushes out the back and there is a drain tube i run out the van. I vent the air conditioner naturally (no tubes) out into the garage where everything else vents up under a 320w solar panel including a 32 inch TV, a 15L fridge, my inverter, mppt and dc-dc chargers. Also a 460AH battery is back there. All share the same 10 inch vent hole and fan on the top. I'm happy to report that this tiny Air conditioner only consumes 170 watts and is able to make the micro camper comfortable enough in thick shade, rain or darkness. Not going to say it makes the cabin ice cold or can overcome direct sunlight, but the it manages to make it comfortable enough for me. Also the 460AH battery and my charging setup seems to run it endlessly and quietly with no limitation so long as I move around in 3 days or park it in the sun when I'm out.

      @@12vLife there are countless ways to set up and run AC off grid. It all depends on which setup works best for your application. We just released a video showing how we get the air conditioner out of the sidewall so they can breathe more freely. It runs at 360 Watts on 120 volts when the compressor is running. Only 60 watts when the fan is running. We run it off of a portable power station and the way that we use it it only uses about 500 watt hours of power per night

    What great timing! We had to strip our 10HD down to the studs walls, removed floor, walls, insulation, cabinets, air conditioner and primer/sealed with 2 coats of a shellac water based product made by BIN to seal out any residual off gassing that ultimately put an end to our camping due to what happened to my breathing. We watched so many of your videos and so many issues we found to be true of our 2022. Wanted to share when we pulled the air conditioner (which was vented very well), water drained outside the camper, perfect condition but… same install where live outlet not covered from any spray AND, same crummy plastic tubing only screwed down the middle and what really blew our minds was the huge pile of mixed sawdust that was intentionally left in case if water backed up in the metal drip pan it would be soaked up by said sawdust!! As we now get back to building the camper from the inside out, will seriously consider re-installing the air conditioner to the outside on a slider system as well. This has been a major undertaking and due to me getting sick, open heart surgery and bad airway complications all due to the off gassing and coupled with my hub’s knee problems, we are getting back on track to re-insulate, put the storage area doors back on above the floor, redo all the walls and this time with only storage shelves, no cabinets, and let’s not forget of course including the mechanical back wall outlet cut outs for the new wall. Yikes has this been a GOD awful expensive gut job! We SO appreciate all the tips and mods that we used to make our teardrop safe and live on for a long time. Elly & Roger

      @@ellythompson4055 I'm currently working with an owner up in central Michigan that is dealing with the same issue. Her dog won't even go near the camper because of the smells. The materials they use in new mass-produced RVs today are very prone to off-gassing for some period of time. From what I've read the off gassing is caused by the petroleum products they use in the chemicals they used to create the materials they put in campers that are mass-produced today. It's the same effect in new cars. Some people like that new car smell and some people don't. The chemicals that cause that new car smell or actually a carcinogen. I'm just trying to think if a different type of camper would have helped prevent these problems for you. Some of the higher end Square drop campers are solid plywood walls that are painted or coated with something. They may not gas off as badly as the paneling materials in the Bushwacker

    Is there a reason mounting this in the "out" position permanently would not work? Ive been looking at that, similar to the runaway camper mount. I dont have an interior water problem but less noise and more efficient would be nice

    • @adventuresofthememorymakers
      @adventuresofthememorymakers 10 днів тому

      There are several reasons that I did not do that type of installation. First off is appearance. IMO it looks like a redneck trailer when you go sticking a window air unit out the side going down the road. So the box makes a nice cosmetic cover for the air conditioner. Also it's a lot harder to seal one up when you're dealing with Road spray at Interstate speeds versus just trying to keep the rain from coming inside around the opening. Having the air conditioner sticking that far out the side of the camper also creates an air load issue as you go down the road at Highway speeds. It's totally doable and the option of the owner has the how you mount your air conditioner. I know that the Runaway mounts those through the front wall which takes care of most of the air load issue going down the road.

    Those Apache boxes from Harbor Freight have so many uses. I might have to look into purchasing one or two. I'm curious as to why you chose to place the pin side at the top instead of the bottom. If you had the latches at the top and the pin on the bottom, wouldn't the clearance for removing the pin be better? Then you could just drop down the cover.

      @@twloughlin you can put the pin at the top or the bottom. I use the shower room as a Fail-Safe retention for the single pin by putting it at the top. Plus being taller being at the top made it easier for me. If you put the pin on the bottom you definitely want to make the door removable if not it'll be hanging out in your way every time you walk past it. If you put it at the top you could use struts like what Emma did.

    Great video Sam. I have one of these for testing also. It is easy to setup and well worth the time needed to do so. While I have not yet had it in the rain, I am very confident it will keep the water from collecting. As Sam mentioned this also keeps the height of the roof elevated. It is very nice not having to constantly duck my head. Great job Sam.
