as it becomes more popular and inclusive it will soften more and more. it's unfortunate, but its also the natural course of things that become more popularized and mainstream. BJJ is not avant-garde anymore- its more for the everyman now. been on the mats 12 years, and its not like it use to be IMO. its good and bad, injuries happen less, you meet people with a wider range of temperaments, but the average guy on the mats is less gritty than 10 years ago.
I agree that it seems like the proportion of people who are “gritty” is lower - but the absolute number is greater. Just makes seeking out the right fit for schools and training partners more important. Thanks for the comment!
I can tell you about being in the cyber security field and the mindset is similar to Jiu Jitsu. I have wrestled for highschool and college. You miss the lifestyle of being a wrestler and grappler.
I think which one is harder really depends on your skills and attributes. The gi adds a lot of friction and changes the game a lot to favor strength for example imo. A family oriented gi only gym is definitely going to be softer on average and I think that’s a lot of what you’re referring to. Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience!

Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience! I’ve heard that about wrestling lifestyle from many wrestlers over my time on the mats
People opt to pull guard.... in what world is giving up the high ground acceptable. Soft.
The ruleset incentivises this. Rules can be changed though.
Gi jiu-jitsu is soft. No gi is harder. Gotta be more athetic to roll without easy hand holds to stop movement.
