Hi I'm Jeff and I started this channel to document my outdoor trips. It's my hope that by watching you will be inspired to get outside and explore this amazing, beautiful, interesting natural world we are lucky enough to inhabit.

Golden Eagle and Dragon's Back Trail with Walt Zolna.
I had the privilege of hiking what's been called the best day hike in Pennsylvania with Walt Zolna.
Walt has a top notch YOU TUBE channel that I'm sure you have seen if you enjoy watching quality outdoor content of Pennsylvania and surrounding areas.
We had beautiful sunny fall weather for our hike and enjoyed camping at Tombs Flats campground right along Pine creek. There was a new moon and no clouds so the stars were amazing and the Milky Way was brilliant! Walt got some great footage of the stars, and a bit of the Northern Lights! I definitely can learn a thing or two about filming the outdoors from Walt.
I definitely recommend the Golden Eagle and Dragon's Back Trail! if you don't want a long drive home after the hike, reserve a spot at one of the campsites nearby! #hiking #outdoors

Backpacking the Devil's Path in the Catskills from end to end.
Переглядів 154Місяць тому
The Devil's Path in the Catskills has been called the toughest hike in the eastern United States. My cousin Chip and I decided to find out for ourselves in late September and came to the conclusion that YES this hike is very tough. The trail takes you up and over many Catskill peaks with beautiful vistas, makes you scramble over and under boulders, and tests your threshold for knee pain. This p...
Lackawanna State Park Hike

I spent the day at Lackawanna State Park. Went for a day hike, made a delicious burrito and even did a little fishing. I didn’t explore as much of the park as I probably should have but I really just wanted to spend time in and around the camper van just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful weather. #hiking#nature#LackawannaStatePark

My friend Jason and I spent a long weekend camping in Moose River Plains in the beautiful Adirondacks. The Moose River Plains Wild Forest is part of the 80,000 acre Moose River Plains Complex, a collection of public lands crossed by more than 40 miles of old dirt logging roads. There are 130 miles of marked trails within the complex, as well as more than 100 primitive roadside tent sites, 65 wa...

I spent a Saturday hiking in the Delaware Water Gap climbing to Sunfish Pond, then drove to a nearby camp to spend the night in the Delaware State Forest (campsite # E013 CCC Camp) where I cooked up some delicious burrito bowls, played some guitar and flew the drone. Weiser State Forest camp, Pinnacle Hike, and Tortilla Pizza

In this video I camp in Weiser State Forest and head out on a hike to the Pinnacle, best view in Pennsylvania on the Appalachian Trail. It was a beautiful late March day with blue sky. When back at camp I cook up a tortilla pizza for dinner and crash in the campervan (Bart). The next morning I make a tasty breakfast of toast with peanut butter, banana, agave, and cinnamon. Cold winter hike in Marsh Creek State Park

I spent a Sunday hiking in the snow at Marsh Creek State Park. It was clear blue skies for most of the day, but the wind picked up later, and it got pretty chilly. Back at the van, I got warmed up and made myself a grilled cheese sandwich with some yummy tomato soup! Marsh Creek is a very nice state park with lots of hiking trails, a reservoir for boating and a swimming beach in the summert...
500 miles in 11 minutes on the Colorado Trail.

On my 500 mile thru hike of the Colorado Trail I took lots of “walk away” shots. So I decided to put them all together in a video with some peaceful classical guitar in the background. “If you are ready to leave father and mother, and brother and sister, and wife and child and friends, and never see them again- If you have paid your debts and made your will, and settled all your affairs, and ar...

Good show. Long hike. The small tent looks good, but holds moisture. Me and pals did some of this trail during spring break long ago. We were starved and limping when we got done.
Thanks a bunch for watching and leaving a comment. I know "starved and limping"... ha ha been there! I love the weight of my z packs tent but it is a little cramped for my taste and definitely holds the moisture. Although it is only 1 pound so really lightweight.
Hello. Fellow hiker/camper. If you don't mind, what site number was this? Thank you.
Hi, the site # is 911. I believe they close certain sites every other year (or something like that) to let the area regenerate. Site # 900 is my favorite. I like to bring my bicycle to ride to the bathroom at Sones pond. (instead of digging catholes or packing it out) I checked out your channel....new subscriber here. 👍
@fivehorizons5295 thank you. Is 900 near sones too?
@@thekeystonehiker8661 900 is closer. I recommend the purple lizard map for Loyalsock State Forest.
@fivehorizons5295 thank you for your help. Love watching your videos. I hope you enjoy what you see in mine. Thank you again
Just met you thru Walter! Subbed!
@@gracegarden1 Awesome! Thanks so much for subscribing! I like your channel too 👍
@@fivehorizons5295 WOW!! Thanks, Jeff! 😁
So happy to finally see a youtube camper cooking vegan meals.
Thanks a bunch for watching! Yeah, I do my best to not consume animal products. I seriously just can't contribute to industrial animal agriculture as it wreaks havoc on our environment. I simply can't claim to love the outdoors and nature and support an industry that is destroying our world while enslaving, torturing and murdering innocent animals. I consider it my Civil Duty to not partake in such an appalling system. I guess it's a form of "Civil Disobedience" I'm not breaking any laws by not partaking in a system I don't agree with, but it is "disobeying civilly" to the norms of this current society. To "BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD" as Gandhi said, peacefully and without offending others and their choices, while setting an example, is what I try my best to accomplish. Thanks again for the comment ✌
@@fivehorizons5295 I feel the same way. If you smell a Beyond Burger cooking in camp, it's probably me.
@@grantclauser3836Nice! I love Beyond Burgers! 🍔
❤love the puff balls. Walt is one of my favorites too!!! Watching your video on walts recommendation! Keep doing youtube! Follow your dreams!🎉😊❤
Ha ha, yeah I can't seem to walk by the puff balls without squeezing one...lol Thanks for the encouragement! My dreams shall indeed be followed! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Nice video work. I watched Walter’s video right before yours. So interesting how two UA-camrs can bring two different perspectives to the same hike.
Thanks for the comment and watching the video! Walt definitely has talent with his editing skills that's for sure. I feel I'm slowly getting better at it.
Great to join in
Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. 👍
You continue to inspire me! That climb at 01:35 was killer, looked like great climb with an awesome reward. I hate having to work for water after a tough hike, but I bet that hit the spot and the snorer oh no! The Catskills look amazing, and you really captured what a tough hike feels like. You're filming/editing/music is top notch on this one. (nice blooper)😅
PA has some of the best fall foliage. I love all the little stream water falls. Your enthusiasm and passion for the outdoors always comes through in your videos. They help to remind me to get out there myself, and what is out there to experience. Always inspiring. BTW....PEARL JAM!!!
Pennsylvania definitely has great fall colors. Thanks so much for the compliments! The Golden Eagle Trail is worth doing more than once for sure. PEARL JAM! 👍🤘
Man I wish I coulda made it.. keep up the good work I hope to catch up with you one day!
That would have been fun, perhaps we will do a hike together sometime 👍
Subscriber of you both. I did this trail a couple months ago. It’s a doozy. My adventure is up on my channel. It appears you and I have the same day hike pack too.
@@TravisWalkerExperience Hi there Travis! Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! I’ll definitely check out your video on the Golden Eagle Trail. 👍 I just bought that day pack at Walmart a few weeks ago. I like it so far. It reminds me of a military style pack. Thanks again 🙏
Wow what views! Did Walt "1 match" that fire?
@@buscampers Hi Bernie! Yeah, that trail has some great vistas! Don’t remember if Walt “1 matched” it…lol He had it burning 🔥 pretty good 👍 Thanks for leaving a comment 🙂
He had a good fire going at LBSP.
I was unaware of this trail until I saw this video and now can't wait to hike it! Always nice seeing two of the UA-camrs I watch get together to make a video. By the way, I think you do a nice job talking to the camera. Your optimistic personality shines!
Thanks Jenn for watching and I’m glad you now know about the Golden Eagle Trail! Definitely hike it, it’s got gorgeous views, small waterfalls, old growth trees and interesting rock formations! Thanks so much for the compliment on “talking to the camera” it made my day 😊
That's awesome that Walter's encouragement helped you to keep going with UA-cam. I think it's one of those things where it is easy to feel discouraged and so many of us do from time to time. This looked like a beautiful trail, especially this time of year. Neat to see those mushrooms and looks like you a nice night for camping too.
@@hikingoutdoorfamily Thanks so much for watching the video and taking the time to comment! I have to admit sometimes I wish I didn’t bring a camera to record my outdoor trips. For me (I know it’s different for everyone) but for me, I feel it takes something away from the experience. Although it adds to the experience in other ways… I went years hiking without even bringing a camera or cell phone, the experiences were just for me and I think I’m going to do that again from time to time. Thanks again for commenting! 🙏
@@fivehorizons5295 I sometimes hike and don't film it. It's nice to have the break and just live in the moment.

@@darcyshikingdiaries Thanks Darcy! Definitely put this hike on your calendar for next year! It’s a beautiful area and the Golden Eagle Trail does not disappoint. It’s a trail that is totally worth experiencing more than once. Thanks again for the comment Darcy 🙏
I was so happy when I seen that you dropped the video this evening Jeff. Man, your words at the beginning got me choked up right from the start. There have been atleast a half dozen times in the course of my youtube channel that I was going to call it quits. And it seems as though every time I got to that point, someone would fortuitously leave a comment that would lift my spirits and propel me to keep pushing forward. I call it "simple acts of kindness". We can all make such a better world if we try to remember to practice these "simple acts of kindness" that don't take alot of effort to produce. I agree, the Golden Eagle was a relative breeze. Maybe we just hit it at the right time on the right day, but I was expecting a bit more of a challenge. They say it's the "best" day hike in Pennsylvania. What is your thought on that? MIne is inconclusive... It certainly is an excellent hike, it features views, small falls, old growth, streamside hiking, geological formations, and a good deal of variety. I feel that I would need to hike all the trails in PA before I could agree with that proclamation, and that would take a lifetime. But hey listen, real talk Jeff, it was absolutely my honor to be able to hike and explore with you. You have inspired me and given me the confidence to begin setting out on more and more challenging backpack trips myself. What viewers will not know from watching this video is the incredibly enjoyable and vigorous conversation we engaged in during the entire hike! As a true and dedicated introvert, it is super rare when I can meet an individual and instantly feel comfortable talking and being myself as I did on this hike. It was a great time all the way around, all the way through the hike, drive into Slate Run, and camp at Tomb Flats. Looking forward to the next one brother... peace
@@WALTERZOLNA Thanks Walt! Definitely agree that the world would be a better place if more people just practiced “simple acts of kindness” The trail really wasn’t that difficult, (good company on the trail makes the miles fly by) and I do think it’s one of the best day hikes in Pennsylvania. Is it number one? Not sure 🤔 Like you said, I haven’t hiked every trail in the state to make the best decision. I’m looking forward to your video, you definitely have lots of creative talent with your editing skills! Let’s do another hike soon! 👍
Hi that’s was one awesome hike what beautiful views the music went perfectly with the video I give you credit that was a tough hike then having to sleep with a snoring person UGG! Lol! At least the second shelter you guys were alone I just love the waterfall so pretty I know the last stretch you were happy to see Bart Lol! I really enjoy your videos thank for sharing Looking foward to your next one Debbie from New Jersey 😎
Thanks so much Debbie for watching and leaving a comment. Yeah that snoring really affected my sleep that night and made the next day harder than it should have been. Lack of sleep can really make climbing mountains tough. Thanks so much for your support I really appreciate it! It means a lot! 👍
Damn brother, that trail is no joke, you filmed and hiked the hell out of it! My knees are creaking just from watching. I have done various day hikes incorporating the Devil's Path but I am not sure I could do the whole thing! The Catskills are legit, beautiful views, mountaintop forests, and miles of rugged trail. This was a great documentation of what it takes to truly tackle the Devils Path!
Thanks again Walt for watching and leaving a comment! We only averaged 1 mile an hour on this trail because of the rough terrain. Most hikers on regular terrain average about 2 miles an hour. We probably could have pushed on to the next shelter on day two but decided to stop a little early and just enjoy resting that evening around camp. Thanks Walt and always look forward to your adventures too! "Nature, Adventure, Discovery"!
That's not steep. Doesn't look like rock climbing at all!😉🙃 Real nice video. Always love the view shots. Keep getting out there and living the woods!

SAVAGE!! Thanks for sharing this experience with us! The views look worth the hellish hiking... Haha!
@@darcyshikingdiaries Savage…lol Thanks Darcy for watching. Yeah, the vistas in the Catskills are pretty epic! My legs were sore for a few days after the trip.

That did look like a difficult hike, but really had some beautiful views. That was a beautiful mandala someone drew in the logbook.
Thanks again for watching and commenting! I love mandalas. I seen a real one made of sand by Tibetan monks at the Tibetan Center in the Catskills one time. So beautiful.
This looks like an perfect way to spend the day. I've never gone backpacking before, just day hikes for me - but I can see the appeal of backpacking too. Loved the opening shot of the fog coming off the lake. It was also neat to see that stonework in the woods along the trail. You have a pretty awesome campervan setup too.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! Do you think you will try backpacking at some point? I like to think of my campervan as my "mobile man cave"!
@@fivehorizons5295 I think I would like to try it one day. Right now it's just the lack of proper gear and time. My kids are in high school, so backpacking might be the perfect thing for me in a few years.
I both dayhike and backpack, the way I figure it if you've got a pack on your back then by definition you're backpacking regardless. Nice hike! New sub here. Have a great day.

Wow that fog coming off the water looked beautiful. I’m pretty much a day hiker myself. Lots of great scenery in here. Nice upgrades to the van. 👍8
Thanks Craig for watching and leaving a comment! You have been going to some pretty amazing places lately on your day hikes for sure! Oh yeah, Bart is happy with his upgrades 😁
Wow, awesome video Jeff! Its just not a Five Horizons episode without some mouth watering food content! As a day hiker myself I reflected on and appreciated your words about dayhiking vs backpacking vs thruhiking. Its a pecking order, I can only imagine the rush of being out there all on ones own for days and weeks as comparable to a simple day hike in the park. Its why I look up to, appreciate, and respect folks like yourself so much! Any day in the woods is a good day, but spending the time and putting in the work to do long distance has to be the ultimate effort/reward ratio. Lackawanna is a pretty awesome park, lots of beautiful scenery and many awesome trails. Maybe we will cross paths one day out there in Penn's Woods...😉
Thanks Walt for the thoughtful response. Yeah, I’m loving that spicy plant based mayonnaise! The places you go on your hikes are always interesting and beautiful and you do a phenomenal job showcasing just how awesome Pennsylvania is. “Two or three hours walking will carry me to as strange a country as I ever expect to see” Henry David Thoreau Hopefully our “paths” will cross someday…🙂
I'm sure Bart is happy with these upgrades as well!
lol, yeah BART likes it when I’m good to him! 😊
So excited to see a new video from you Jeff! You really did have the place to yourself!
Thanks Darcy! Yeah, when I got to the parking area it felt like my own little campsite. It was such a beautiful morning, I stood out in the misty field, breathing in the fragrant mist that was dissipating from the meadow and just feeling so thankful that my connection to nature is solid and never disappoints, if anything I believe it gets stronger as we get older. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment Darcy!
Great information! Where did you get the map from?
Thanks a lot for watching and leaving a comment! So, I got the map and guidebook from the Keystone Trails Association website for $16.00 Happy Hiking!
Great Video. My daughter and I hiked to sones pond from route 220. Ya shoulda shown some of the hard steep parts from the pond to the parking lot. The trail is hard. We enjoyed the journey
Thanks a lot for watching and leaving a comment. The Loyalsock trail has some rough sections that's for sure!
The view of the forest is so beautiful and peaceful, camping here is absolutely fantastic
Thanks a lot for watching the video and leaving a comment! 👍
How long did it take you to get to the waterfall?
From where we camped it only took a few hours. If you park at the main trailhead, it's about 4 miles or so I believe, but their is limited parking closer to the falls. You can get a map and guide book from the Keystone Trails Association website.
I don't know why my channel was not subscribed because I watch your video's! Everytime I see someone do this trail I get more inpired to backpack it myself! Hopefully next year I will do it!
Hi Darcy, definitely hike this trail! In my humble opinion its the best backpacking trip in Pennsylvania. There are lots of side trails so you can make shorter (or longer) loops.
An axe and bare feet can lead to issues...
Ha ha, yup, don't want to chop off any toes...lol That would ruin a trip for sure.
Moose have been known to frequent Helldiver Pond.
Was really hoping we would see one, but we did see a beaver pretty close and Jason swears a beaver bumped the canoe! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

Thanks so much for watching the video and leaving a comment! Time spent in nature is never wasted time.
This looks like a great vacation. The lake was beautiful. That privvy out in the open near the lake was so funny. Not used to seeing them like that. Usually there is some type of enclosure.
Thanks a lot for watching and leaving a comment! Yeah, no privacy with that bathroom…lol The lakes there are really beautiful, definitely worth the drive to get there.
Hi I enjoyed your video. Someday we'd love to get out to Moose River Plains. Can't beat the beauty, peace and quiet.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Definitely make the time to visit. The town of Old Forge is a great place to stop and get any last minute supplies before entering MRP from the west. 👍
Looked like a nice trip. Dinner looked good. What was that rice cooker pot? I've never seen one like that. Worthington was the first trip we took with our bus and we did the Sunfish Pond hike. I went back up there this past Nov for muzzleloader season and did a hunt and camp video. Climbing up that mountain in a Pennsylvania Tuxedo sucked lol.
Thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment! That pot is a small pressure cooker. Once pressure is built up you can take it off the heat (to save propane) and it keeps cooking. Were you successful in your muzzleloader hunt? I used to hunt up in Tioga county. Got a buck one year. Pennsylvania tuxedo? Not sure what that is…lol
@@fivehorizons5295 I'm going to have to look into that small pressure cooker. I like the idea of having one for camping. No luck with the hunt. I only saw a small buck the day before the season opened. PA Tuxedo is the old Woolrich red and black plaid wool hunting jacket and pants. My buddy hunts in Tioga. He bagged a monster buck about 10 or so years ago.
Loved your videos. I am starting trail in a couple of weeks, and though I am a couple of decades older, I found your pace and decisions to stop when you were tired very reassuring. Unlike the younger crowd doing 20+ miles per day, I am in the 10-15 mile class. I am not sure I can eat as many mashed potatoes as you did :) but am curious about how much weight you lost on the trail and how many days is took you to finish. Best of luck on your future hiking trips.
Thanks a lot for watching! I hope it helps you with your Colorado Trail adventure. I used to bang out 20's when I was younger but at 47 years old I'm not letting my stupid ego get me injured. I'm right there with you in the 10 to 15 mile class. I love to hike for so many reasons and banging out more miles than my body can safely handle isn't on of them. Hiking 20 or 30 miles every day is impressive but to quote Teddy Roosevelt "Comparison is the thief of joy" I lost about 15 lbs, I got sunburnt more than I expected, and yes I got tired of mashed potatoes...lol Don't recall how long it took me to finish...5-6 weeks. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos! It means a lot! Best of luck on the CT! Definitely stop and smell the flowers (figuratively and literally) No need to rush it, it's just too beautiful ⛰🌄🗻🏔
@@fivehorizons5295 Thank you! Definitely working on "smelling the roses" I am on no timeline since retirement and need to act accordingly! Hard to get used to after hikes on a work based timeline. Six weeks is what I expect, as I want to have a few zero days in those mountain towns. Thanks for the reply
I bet the privy was fun. The pond looked beautiful with all the pine trees in the background. Having it all to yourself made it even better. How did the water feel? Wow the privy by beaver lake was way worse than the first one. Absolutely no privacy. Now that was a huge snapping turtle. We used to find ones like that when I was a kid. Looks like a fun trip. 👍7
Thanks Craig for watching and leaving a comment! I really appreciate it! Yeah the privy’s there weren’t the best but it beats having to dig a hole…lol The water in Beaver Lake was so clean and refreshing! Having a natural lake all to ourselves in a wilderness area is definitely something special. I need to make that happen more often! That snapping turtle was running pretty fast(for a turtle) 🐢 When he saw us, he stopped and didn’t more at all… Thanks again for commenting!
