JLH 1969 amplifier - classic John Linsley - Hood rocking hard in 2024 (55 years now!)
This is a full review of classic JLH 1969 by BrzHiFi - called A100.
Again, this is one of the recommendations from you guys. A lot of you asked me if I heard this one, and how does this Hood compare to Musical Fidelity A1 clone.
I have to admit that I am curious myself, it was one of three small, value amps I wanted to hear.
Do you realize that this is 55 years old invention? It's mind boggling!
So, here it goes - full review video! And yes, it is good. Is it better than MF A1 clone?
That will require another, longer listening session as both of them present great, tube-like sound quality. So, stay tuned, I will definetely compare them.
You can get yours from the same shop I got mine from (so tested as safe and reliable - and has exactly the same units as in review, as very often the same chassis can have more or less different iternals):

    Hi. Great video as always. I have been looking at this amp for some time now. I'm not sure whether you are aware that Audiophonics rebadge this amp (more expensive though) and dell as there own. Can the E600 be used as a preamp via the XLR outs as I'd like to use it with my V3 monos? BRZHIFI also sell a cheap class A preamp SE only with or without Bluetooth. Do you or any of your subscribers have any experience with it? It is extremely cheap so I may give it a go unless the E600 can be used as a preamp. Some of the clones you review look awesome and i guess the only thing putting me off is QC and returning items if they are faulty. Is the BRZHIFI store a reliable place to buy from or do you have another favourite? Keep up the great work.

    hi 🙂 I would love to hear your opinion (and see another review?) about the difference between this one and the Anando Nano. I have now about a month this one and another one for now about 9 days and yes confirming your story. 🙂 the newest does seem to have more punch in the bass and better bass continuously. • @onnonugteren2935
      @onnonugteren2935 30 хвилин тому

      @@k4syx Yes modification. I am guessing that it's not worth it. ...So I am highly curious about your experience. Not worth because I now have come to the end in my believes that these headphones RE9 are really great AFTER a long about two weeks of burning in time, one even four weeks. And other headphones differs more than with a small upgrade at costs of sound also here with the RE9. That's why I am interested in your comparison with the Anando Nano's, a very different headphone. Between the lines I believe that people who did the modifications on the RE9 did not give a good burning in time and time to enjoy the result: that specific thing, mixture of sound end result. So if you leave one original and 'mod' one than you are fair to the RE9 and mods and other types. About headphone cables...: that's another story here with the headphones, I do think this is something I would like to know how much difference it makes to change them for 'better' ones if at all. The original cables are short and good, so will it really matter that much as with speaker cables? What do you think and what do you think about my thoughts here? Greetings again. 🙂 And yes for many hours I really enjoyed the end result with these RE9> so specail effects and sound: never heard before but never did try also: granted. Still superb sound with my Chord Mojo combined. 🙂 ... Ah and the differences are now very small between the two I have. So that tells a lot good points for the RE9 the second one just needs some more burning time to my little experiment.

    Hi Zone Man. We have agreed about a tube amp on general and especially in some modes can sound as dopamine/narcotis boost in the system. So, regarding this I can not understad why this and some other transistor amps has a tube like sound? Why even to be compared to it in this case? Other even less powerful version of JLH1969 amp (which I have) has nothing to do at all with tube amp sound in general. Even if you put some more like neutral- cold, claer sounding tubes in it, such amp would never have a speed - macro and micro dynamisc as JLH amp has. But great how you described a shape of a sound stage. I could go along with such impression. But it depends on speakers and how much are they from a front wall, wall treatments and such...

    • @k4syx
      @k4syx 3 дні тому

      Hi! Some but not all pure tube amps will give us those dopamine shots. But thats not tube sound that every single tube amp will have, just the best. @k4syx 3 дні тому

      Two weeks usually, sometimes longer, if I dont have the time for the review I'll just leave the amp playing. Yes it does change things, especially during first half of first week. Some devices will change more, some less. As I try to review them in their best possible state (and check for reliability) I try to keep this 2 weeks time as bare minimum.

    • @RandomShart
      @RandomShart 2 дні тому

      I'm not sure I'm a "long term burn in" believer, or at least I haven't heard a difference yet in my lifetime. I do have the A1 clone and I think it does sound a little harsh in treble until it's warmed up (10 minutes max) but I haven't noticed any changes day-to-day, or week-to-week. It sounds beautiful every time after a few minutes to warm up, I can't stop listening to it and so glad I found this channel!

  • @Sammelwuetiger
    @Sammelwuetiger 3 дні тому

    I own both the A1 and the A100. These are my impressions and thoughts on these two amplifiers. The A1 needs a lot of burn-in time. At first I never thought the A1 could keep up with the warm sound of the A100. But after 3-4 months and around 500 hours of running time for each amplifier, switching both between my two systems several times, the A1 has now made the race. There are a few things I don't like about the A100. Tom Waits' version of Waltzing Mathilda, for example. There are some frequencies in Tom Waits' voice that the A100 has trouble with, and which, when played through it, are painful for my ears. It also has problems reproducing sibilance on some quieter CDs. A Christy Moore CD in particular is practically inaudible on the A100 as a result. But only on the A100. The A1, on the other hand, can reproduce both CDs very well. Bass, midrange and treble are on point on both amps. I like the transparent, light and open music reproduction of both. The A1 again leads in one of my more important categories. Its large soundstage far exceeds its size, power and price, and here it beats the A100 in every way. I think I'll buy a second A1 for horizontal bi-amping. One for the low frequencies, the other for the rest.

    This was a very interesting review. Thank you for sharing it. I have the same LPS unit, which I use to provide +12 VDC operating power to the two fiber optic media converters that connect my modem/router/network switch with my Ever Solo DMP-A8 music streamer. This LPS replaces the electrically noisy switching mode power supplies that came with these two media converter units. The two things I don't like about this LPS are: -It it did not include an AC line fuse, which I had to add myself. I view this as a serious design flaw, as it makes the device intrinsically unsafe. I used a 1 amp slow-blow fuse, for our 120 VAC line voltage. -The 6 amp silicon rectifiers in the bridge rectifier section are not controlled-recovery diodes, so they probably generate a lot of broadband noise, which is not ideal for those hi-fi audio applications where we want the best possible sound quality. I am thinking of replacing them with controlled recovery rectifiers. Have you given this any thought, etc.?

    • @k4syx
