An OG Kaoss Pad KP3 is actually a very good XY controller, and it even has class-compliant USB Midi. The only keyboard I've got with AT is an Oxygen Pro and OMG the aftertouch is so bad. It takes a few mm of travel before it registers at all, and then it jumps to about 30, then it only has about half a mm of travel between the 30 - 120 (and it doesn't go to 127). I wish somebody would make a normal 25-key keyboard with full-sized keys and normal pitch/mod wheels and decent aftertouch. Or even a 61-key. But I don't need a huge keyboard with huge screens on it. The only keyboards that don't have really bad aftertouch are huge and expensive like the NI S61 mk3 or the Studiologic SL88.

I have MODAL's COBALT5S which just about mirrors the functionality of the COBALT8, albeit 1 less LFO so only 2, it doesn't have REVERB but then I could still add that in my DAW and it doesn't have the Distortion mode from the COBALT & ARGON8 but that's ok by me! An advantage with Hardware Synths is that if you don't have a powerful PC or Mac, the DSP in the synth is doing most of the heavy-Lifting so that all your computer's CPU has to deal =with is Automation of the synths parameters inside your DAW Software of choice. A really great Hardware Synth with App that helps people transition from VSTs to Hardware Synths... and great for the beginner!

One of my favorite tricks is to run two instances of HB. Connect the midi out of one to the in of other ❤

Thanks for looking at this, Waveform! That new resynthesis engine is just amazing! Dawesome's relentlessly awesome. BTW, I wish you and Dan Worrall narrated more plugin dives... including the resynthesis of the birth of the universe.

When I first used this synth it instantly became one of my favorite synths I ever heard. I just wish I didn't need to freeze every track its on, but im willing to take that big inconveniences.

Certainly an improvement, sounds a lot better. Unfortunately cpu usage is still horrible, even in eco mode it easily uses 50% of my 12 core 4.3ghz cpu , i hope that can be fixed.

To be honest, I didn't really understand what the process was until you explained at the end. Creating a synthesized emulation patch out of a sample. It is impressive but I don't currently have an immediate use case for it.

***MASCHINE MK3 users: Harmony Bloom website states that it works on any DAW. That is not entirely correct. You will need a third party plugin for it to work. Midi plugins are not compatible Maschine MK3 without first a plugin like Element. :)

thanks for this! Most don’t know but the Ensoniq VFX-SD/SD-1 from 1990 has polyphonic aftertouch on all its patches and very easy to set.

Excellent demo. I've watched the Audiomodern videos on this and some others, but this still provided some great insights. Top notch content.

Majority of these are very obvious solutions. However if you're someone like me, who doesn't want to depend on DAW or computer itself to enable certain feature, the best would be to buy the cheapest or even a used keyboard with aftertouch, and connect it to your main synth via MIDI Cables and setup channels accordingly, and done, one very versatile setup even for live! Luckily my kurz pc3k8 has channel aftertouch, I recently connected via midi, an Alesis VI49 for more flexibility, which has aftertouch too, now I replaced the alesis with a used motif xs, and I guess it's working great so far. I've got plenty of flexibility while not having to turn on my computer or DAW. I now have 15 sliders and 8 knobs and 18 switches (depending on modes of keyboards) and 4 wheels to control both of my synths.

Something I obsess over is how, since 1997, I’ve owned 14 synthesizers, three of which are mine and it longer. Among them, five have been equipped with both velocity and channel aftertouch, but only my latest acquisition from June 2024, a Hydrasynth Explorer, is built with polyphonic aftertouch. I would definitely be fascinated to see how it interacted with plug-ins if I was still trying to use those, but all the sound that I include on my tracks come from hardware synthesizers, no sequencing, arpeggiators or loops used if I can help it.

I am of a 'certain' age and always loved Phasing - check out Doobie Brothers "Listen to the Music" 7 minute version or the very short version of The BYRDS = " I wasn't born to follow" as seen in the film "EASY RIDER"..!! A new 'phase' of "Phasing" is upon us.!!! Extremely amazed at what it did to the drums..!!! Well done.!
