What Matters to Matt
Canada
Приєднався 4 січ 2019
I spend my life focusing on how I can get to what matters and ultimately what matters to me most is my family. How do I get there? By working every single day to be the best I can be in all aspects of my life. I am continuously looking fo new way to improve both my physical health and mental health through setting goals. Running has become my main focus but overall fitness including endurance training and strength training helps me be a more well rounded athlete
Brooks Glycerin Max First Impressions - Unreal!!!
This is my first impressions review of the Brooks Glycerin Max.
Brooks just broke the Brooks mold. They lowered the drop, messed with the midsole and put out the highest stack brooks running shoe to date. But does that mean that they have been able to make something that this shoe nerd will truly love? The short answer is yes!!!

With the Asics Gel-Nimbus 27, has Asics finally made the perfect high stack premium daily trainer? Asics made some drastic changes to the Nimbus Line a couple years ago firmly placing the Nimbus in the Max cushion category and making bold claims that it was the most comfortable running shoe on the market. I loved the Nimbus 25 running over 600 miles in that shoe. Fingers crossed this max cushio...

I dont care what people think about my runs . My problem is body image .. trying to cut the weight...... Slowly . I stopped going to park run because of the horrible photos. I follow the "elites" in my local area and I've had heaps of help from them. Nice content +sub
💯 hear you. Body image has more of an impact on me than I tend to let on in my videos. There's a few videos I've been trying to figure out how to best put together for the channel and body image is one of them. Prior to starting the channel I dropped around 80 pounds through mostly weight lifting and diet. Now I know there are things that influence the way I think about my fitness around how I feel about how I look. Video on that might still be a few weeks away but it's coming
Didn’t like the non gusseted tongue, it slides to the slides a little which is really annoying. Most shoes in this price range have a gusseted tongue, like the Novablast, Nimbus and MagMax. Comfort is excellent though so I was disappointed I had to return them. Brooks have a great returns policy.
Love the intro!
Thanks 🙏
I switched from Boston 12 to Ride 17 as a daily trainer. Liked the foam on the Boston but the hard plastic overlays on the toe box were cutting up my metatarsals. The Ride 17 is reassuringly assured, nothing exciting but a real bread and butter shoe. I've got about 430 miles on mine and feel like I can get another couple of hundred. I might consider getting another pair as they are so reliable and resilient. These can run quicker than their weight suggests but I feel like easy to steady is best but its competent with tempo too.
Interesting. I did not have the issue with the overlay in the Boston. Did the Boston fit true to size for you?
@WhatMatterstoMatt Adidas are never true to size for me, always have to go for 10.5UK when I'm 10 in everything else. Think it was a defect of that shoe in particular. A piece of the harder plastic was a little concave and pinched/cut my forefoot.
@@mrbump7266 hey mate, may I know your weight and pace range? Plan to get the ride 17s for daily miles since its on discount at $85
@@abdiwijoyoc 180lbs Easy Pace 9min, 7.30min miles for tempo.
Comparison is the thief of joy.
100% agree. Working on doing less of it.
I wore my new pair yesterday and experienced Achilles pain on both sides. i did feel as if the DNA tuned midsole created a “ramp” (where midfoot is higher than the heel) which made it harder to go through the transition to forefoot. Going to walk in them for a while and then retest. Fortunately, the store that I bought them from has a good return policy.
Interesting, please keep me posted on how it goes. I can see how "softer in the heel" that we get with the DNA tuned might cause issues. I'm taking them on a pure recovery run soon where I tend to heel strike a bit more and will keep you posted.
@ I ended up taking them back to the store. I have a history of Achilles issues, so did not want to take the chance. Wore the Superblast v2 today. So much more comfortable in comparison and more versatile. I think that the combination of the softer heel, firm forefoot and forefoot rocker on the glycerin max, creates a pivot point in the forefoot/midfoot area. For me, I think that I was landing such that I effectively had a negative drop and my foot was struggling to transition over the pivot. I am a heavier runner (190) which may have contributed to this issue.
Thanks for the input. Always important to keep in mind that not every shoe is going to work for everyone.
I am not spending $200 USD on a pair of shoes. Asics Superblast has the same issue, with great reviews but a sky high price tag. But thanks for the review, maybe I'll get lucky a year from now and find the MAX on an acceptable discount.
I see where you are coming from. I used to say in my videos "I will let you know whether I think a shoe is worth your hard earned cash". Now I typically just say whether I think it would be worth it to me. So many options out there. Do u have a favorite daily trainer you are using right now?
@@WhatMatterstoMatt I did pick up a pair of Triumph 21 on discount after watching your comments. They have been pillow soft and perfect for long runs. I'm a fan of NB as a daily trainer, I've had multiple pair of 880.
2:15 when I tried these on at my local run shop I said those exact words out loud and my buddy who’s the manager and podium finisher at Javalina Jundred last year said the same. I ended up buying a different shoe that day but I’ll be back for this one when I start increasing mileage again.
Clearly I'm a fan. I think for lots of people it will be down to whether the size and weight of the shoe feels like too much or not. What's your daily trainer/recovery shoe right now?
@@WhatMatterstoMatt that and I think too many people are on the Superblast hype train lol. Funny you should ask that. I’ve been waiting 2 weeks for my replacement daily to arrive 🫠. I went with the Novablast 5. I guess my current daily bounces between the Mach 6 and the Speed 4, but I have found both to be a tad aggressive for my EZ mile liking. I really enjoyed the Novablast 3 but the midsole died miserably at 200 miles. Heard the 5 is considerably similar but longer lasting so that lead to my decision.
comparison is the thief of joy
100% agree. Working on doing less of it.
Also why pay for something when you could just go out and run for free
Awesome to see Brooks has finally gotten it together on their foams! The way I go through shoes, I'll probably wait until the next version drops and these get discounted, but definitely intrigued!
It is a really interesting shoe. I'm going to be putting more miles into it as soon as I can. It will be interesting if it is just love at first sight where my opinion changes over time or if I will continue to love it. For me it was a different experience from a number of other shoes out there (in a good way).
Ran my first marathon in a pair of Ghost 12's, and retired the shoe at 750km. Which was a record that took several years to eventually beat. Brooks has had a very niche spot in the market for years with the recreational runner. They have been trying for 3-4 years to break into the performance space, with very limited success. But it seems like they have finally caught up to the market again, atleast in some models. Here's hoping there isn't another massive technological shift that leaves Brooks floundering again.
I bet there are a lot of people out there who would say something like "ran my first marathon in a pair of Ghost ?" For now I like their way of separating their standard line with this "max" line of shoes. Fingers crossed they will be able to continue to satisfy the faithful classic Brooks fans and continue to innovate. But you are right, these days companies really can't afford to take some leap forward in tech and sit on it for a while and not continue to innovate.
The comparison thing you said was very relatable. In order to combat that, I went from following like 75 people, to 20. Only people I know and that are on my level, or like 3 total people who are on different levels. This just keeps comparison out of the picture
It can be a struggle figuring out the balance. I think as I grow as a channel a big goal will be to keep it honest (the good, the bad and the ugly)
0:50 I like to draw angry eyebrows on the kraft bears. If I am at anyone’s house and stumble upon their peanut butter jar, chances are in a few days I get a message from them acknowledging the prank
This is brilliant!
Bro stop thinking so much about you and what other people may think about you. You're over thinking too much. Post your run, or not post. Be done with it and move along.
100% makes sense. Just sharing some of the random thoughts that come into my head in relation to my running. Great advice!!!
Great video 😊 It took some time for me to listen to my body instead of thinking about pace and distance on Strava but i love Strava 😅 And looks like the brooks can be a confender to replace my Triumph 22 as an easy cruser 😮
Honestly I love strava too. Lots of good things come out of it. As for the Brooks. I was a little worried about the weight and it probably will take a few more runs to know for sure whether it really makes a difference. I think some people will love the glycerin max and some people will find it too be a little too much shoe. For me it felt pretty good on that first run cruising along, not worrying about pace, feeling really protected but also not feeling like the shoe was holding me back. Definitely an interesting experience.
Your content has rly grown on me Matt. Your vids are always full of humility, humbleness, and hard work. Your content as a whole improves consistently too. I think you’ll find big success with the channel this year.
Thanks, it really does make a pretty big difference hearing that the work is appreciated. Just like anything else consistency seems to be the secret to getting better at something and I am hoping to continue that with my youtube.
@@WhatMatterstoMatt you got it brother
It always shocks me how badly I look running, I look like a broken down old man! I use Strava mostly as a historical record of my running. The good, the bad and definitely some ugly runs. I like to look at data, but I don't let it influence my own running. Otherwise, running with Roy all the time would kill me. When we run easy, it works out that we can find a pace that's balanced for both of us. But when it comes time for workouts, he does his thing, I do mine. Neither me or Roy have anywhere NEAR the life responsibilities you do, which is why we have higher mileage. Do what works for you, and don't let Strava noise dictate your running. It'll steal the joy from it.
I feel the same way about my running. No matter how often I run with a camera in my hand and I still can't stand seeing myself run. I get the same feeling with hearing my own voice in a video (not a fan.) But when it comes to the running, still love getting out with you guys and it really does help with my consistency and push me to be a better runner.
When it comes to Strava, I closely monitor the progress of others which is really nice to see, acknowledging that everyone participates for their own distinct reasons. I am not concerned with comparing my performance to others, as I do not perceive myself to be in competition with anyone else. My sole competitor is the person I was yesterday. Through growth, learning, and improvement, I have enhanced my abilities, and this self-progression is the only aspect that truly matters.
Love this video, on a topic that doesn't get discussed enough. Totally agree with most of your points. One other thing to consider with respect to the transparency Strava affords, is its potential for positively impacting one's followers. While it's certainly easy to anticipate how others might view an unsuccessful effort on Strava, I sometimes have to remind myself that a number of followers take inspiration from my posts. It's not always an easy line to straddle, I love it when the influencers like you put it out there for the running world to ponder. Keep putting out the great content, hats off to all you guys training in that COLD weather 🥶!
Thanks so much, honestly I can't tell you how much it means to me to know that my videos are appreciated. One of my goals I have been quietly thinking about for my running, my instagram and my strava is to try and share as much of it as possible. All the highs and lows.
@WhatMatterstoMatt love how you always put your running in the greater context of your life, that's what makes it so relatable!
I never worry about what others will say about my run. If anything, I am glad I did one and cheer them up on their own runs. Running is about freedom, connecting to nature, and doing something I like. It is not checking if someone had a faster pace or ran longer.
Incredible way of looking at things!!!
Glycerin Max looks awesome, looking forward to the review.
It is. Little on the heavy side and with my size 13 foot was a little worried. But did really well on that first run
wave a wand over it too. it really works because its on tv like all the great products 8 cannot do without that works. 😨
Been eyeing Ride 17 for daily trainer for my marathon training block. Im M27, 5'9", 158lbs (174cm, 71kg), training 35-42 kpw with Pegasus 39. My longest run is 24km at 6:19/km, 5K PB at 26:15 (5:15/km), and fastest 1K at 3:40/km. Currently aim for sub 1:55 half mara and sub 4:10 marathon. Does it suitable for my figures and can handle 25-35km long runs? Plan to build 2 shoe rotation with Saucony Ride 17/Asics Novablast 5 for daily trainer, and Zoom Fly 6/Saucony Endrophin Pro 4 for long run and race day shoe. Looking for shoe that build like a tank and could rack up 350-400 miles since im on budget.
I think the Ride 17 could definitely work. I have always found the PWRRun plus midsole seems to last a very long time. It's not the most exciting shoe in the world but just gets the job done. I have yet to run in the Novablast 5 mostly because I have a few different shoes in for testing right now that I am trying to get some miles in first. But when the time comes it might be hard to choose between the Ride 18 and the Novablast 5 next. Both I think I would use for similar jobs (daily miles) but come at it in slightly different ways (Novablast feeling softer)
I have just had mine come yesterday as I have arthritis in my left knee and I have found some benefit from it already
Love the grind and the love for the grind. I’m 34 and about to start my career (finally) and hopefully a family soon. Your balance is something I strive for and I consider you an idol man. Glad I found your channel and I suspect this will grow indefinitely in the future.
Once again, thanks for watching and understanding what I'm hopefully trying to share on this channel. Balancing all the things can be very difficult but being honest with what really matters most makes all the difference.
Not sure if you know this but chocolate has caffeine. Caffeine has a pretty long half life as well. So I’d probably avoid chocolate in the afternoon, although that chocolate bar looks delicious. I hope your sleep gets better man (or that this stretch of poor sleep was due to holidays and/or poor technology).
It would be wrong for me to say that I usually get good sleep because to be fair it is usually pretty horrible, but the holidays was really bad. I do a lot better with as much routine as possible and when that goes out the window other things go out the window pretty quickly, including sleep and diet :)
@@WhatMatterstoMatt I'm the same way. At the end of the day, we are all human and have multiple life things that get in the way. Give yourself some grace. You work multiple jobs and you're a family man. Can't be easy.
pls believe me but my bell don’t wake me up
i caught santa on camera he didn’t notice the camera on the bar we have
Great video! Can I ask what Garmin model did you use?
Wow, you get so little sleep! I notice a big difference in recovery if I get less than 7 hours. I aim to be in bed 8 hours before my alarm is set, to allow for "getting to sleep time" (can't help children duties though, can't really plan for that) You mentioned a few times that you are avoiding caffeine before bed, but you sometimes have cocoa or chocolate (contains cocoa). Cocoa contains caffeine. I starting getting to sleep much more successfully after stopping the habit of late night chocolate. Thanks for sharing, and good luck with your training.
Thanks!!! Yep, sleep has always been a struggle and chocolate at night is probably not the best idea. It honestly has a bit to do with the holidays and letting loose a bit on diet. Don't get me wrong, there are very few days I go without a treat or two or three :) but chocolate before bed probably wont be a habit I get into.
Do triathlon training plans require you to have a multi sport Garmin. Will it work on a watch that has run swim cycle capabilities?
Ah here your sleep schedule is just horrendous. With the amount of training you are doing you are losing so much on recovery due to lack of planning with your sleep.
100% agree. This was a bit of a special week because I was off and the holidays. But it would not be right for me to say that my sleep is usually very good. If I took an honest look at where I could make the biggest gains in my training and progress towards my goals, sleep would probably be really high up on the list.
The sleep tracker is the only bad thing on a garmin. I notice it only keeps up my main sleep it doesn't seem to pick up when I have a short nap 1 to 2 hours, never gets recorded.
Interesting. I have noticed that too. There have been times that it has picked it up, but anything outside of what might be considered normal for me it struggles with. It's almost like the watch is anticipating the time (I let it know my normal/hopeful sleep and wake up time) and reports on that
If you’re ever having any trouble settling down to sleep you might try a guided progressive relaxation. It has a lot of benefits, but if you do it before sleep it slows down your thoughts and relaxes your mind and body etc. and if you’re still trying to avoid caffeine first thing you could try peppermint tea - mint can help you feel more awake as well.
Which one do you suggest, garmin forerunner 245 or 965
I have not tried the 965 too be honest. Where I am at in my running journey I find that the 265 that I am currently using gives me the information I need. But I'm always curious about what is out there so who knows :)
Thank goodness your friend stopped you doubling up with a recovery run😱 or were you joking 😂😂😂
LOL, I ended up running an easy 5km on the treadmill later that day. Sometimes I am my own worst enemy.
Its a lovely thing to run on Xmas Day🎉
You are absolutely right!!! It felt so good to get out that afternoon. I loved spending time with the kids in the morning but getting out for a run really recharged me for the rest of the day.
Ya, eating and drinking too close to bed will not help your sleep. My sleep is important, given my age and my mileage I would 100% breakdown FAST if I was sleeping as poorly as you do. I try and get my 8hrs every night and most days I try and sneak in an hour nap if possible. Going to try and not push this sunday. If the weather is nice, we find it's easier to settle into our power bands instead of running harder to stay warm! LOL
Lol, can't imagine ever averaging 8 hours.
You got to bed (and eat) sooooo late, I'm shocked! Can you not get to bed at 9pm? Having been dealing with moderate sleep apnea and now on a CPAP machine and got my 'events' down from 22 an hour to zero, I have been super super conscious of sleep quality. As a 70 yr old runner I wear my Garmin 24 /7 and check my body batterry (which is mainly about HRV) and sleep quality every morning. I've found it very indicative of my energy levels etc. Poor sleep due to apnea events is extremely serious, but also serious for an athlete like yourself, you've gotta get better sleep. PS love the Toblerone idea, but as chocolate is a stimulant, why not eat it before train8ng! Good luck and thanks for a thought provoking video👍
Sorry I'm so late getting back to these. I did end up doing exactly what you suggested about the chocolate (little treat before training) Only thing is that I have to keep it too an ideal amount just to make sure my stomach does not have any real issues because of it. Agreed (my sleep is poor) I'm am slowly putting more things in place to try and make it a little better. Admittedly the holidays and being off from teaching is a little bit of an extreme example but unfortunately not too far off the norm.
If I wear a 10 in current new balance shoes like the 880 v14 and Rebel V4, should I get a 10 in these as well?
I should probably join you and your friends it’s being hell doing 25k long runs by myself. I have seen Tim a few times we introduce very quickly but never got the change to run with him. I know he’s a good runner. Cheers
Thanks for this clip!
No problem. Glad it helps!
I think at the very least, runners should track protein. It’s easy to pound the carbs and usually get enough. Awesome weight loss journey. I had a similar one. Competing in natty bodybuilding for 5 years. Now I still lift but run more and I feel great.
😂 Garmin has my predictions at around the same time. Certainly don’t think I’ll be knocking 9mins off of that come early May. Congratulations Matt🎉!!
I love having all the data, race predictions, estimated Vo2max, etc... I'm still trying more and more to figure out how to use all that information to help me with my training. Not rely on it because it's hard to believe it is always going to be 100% accurate, but still give me some good info about my fitness.
Unfortunately mine says file is empty
I'm 55 and ran PRs in the 5K, 10K, and 15K in 2024 (17:46, 38:05, 59:34). The biggest thing I learned was to enjoy the journey more and become more invested in the success of others around me. I can tell you have that part right, and as long as you do, I believe your running will be successful. Love the channel, keep cranking out the miles and the content!
Absolutely love this!!! Really positive way of thinking that I sometimes forget.
Me and Roy use the same trail belt which tucks under our jackets which keeps the bottles warm enough. Instinct Reflex belt, amazing belt and can easily be used to run a marathon self-supported without needing aid stations, unless the weather is crazy hot/humid. Being able to combine your hydration/fuel is really convenient and has numerous benefits that massively outweigh the negatives of the added "weight" you are carrying...even when racing.
I also use a compressport running belt and its pretty awesome….. tucks under the jacket so it doesn’t get as cold and i can store loads of stuff in there! Love your video’s keep it up buddy! 👏👏👏
@@gabrielcyr-t3m I own a lot of compressport kit. It's great stuff.
might be something I have to check out. It has not been too much of a problem and I have resisted carrying my liquids in a running belt for some reason (not really sure why). I have a running vest that I am a fan of but I run into the same issue in the cold where the bottles are on my chest.
I will have a look. Could be the answer. If it's good you will probably hear about it in a video :)
@@WhatMatterstoMatt If you can get a baggy enough jacket or one specifically made for it, you can wear the vest under the jacket and unzip to take a drink. That solves the problem too. I did that for 2 years till I switched to the belt for most runs.
So minus 14… I guess I have no excuses anymore 😂 hats off, great video, I enjoyed the nutrition deep dive
I till complain about the cold :)
Like the zero hype approach... An episode about hard days hard and easy days easy... How you do it...
That is a very solid idea. Very likely something I will be doing a video on.
Guys I wanna start running 10km. A day and I’m an absolute noob at running can anyone give me tips to prevent injury?
Start lower and build up towards it and don’t give every single day your all. Also run slower
Is the saucony guide 17 a stability version of the ride 17?
No! Guide 17 has an older EVA midsole. It is the Hurricane 24 the stability counterpart albeit significantly heavier. You can also try Tempus 2 as a stability shoe with uptempo potential
