ICO: Yorda's Language & The Secret of the Sarcophagus Room
I analyse Yorda's language in ICO and explore where this language is implemented and something that I have noticed regarding it, it's only real implementation is in the Sarcophagus Room. We can't find these exact symbols anywhere around the castle, only small deviations from it. What can this imply? I explore this and more!

    Would a SotC PREQUEL or SEQUEL be more interesting? They could either explore the origins of Dormin or they could explore an advanced civilization in the future rediscovering Dormin and the consequences that follow. The trailer is definitely giving off a strong prequel vibe but I can't put my finger on why that is!

    • @nothanks4204
      @nothanks4204 9 годин тому

      "Prequel" and "sequel" are very loose terms here, I meant it more as in pre-or-post-SotC in the timeline (assuming it's the same universe). Not saying the game will be explicitly a prequel or sequel to SotC because I think that would be too wild!

    After going to the website and looking at the still image and watching the trailer I think I have some theories. - This land looks to be very natural. Water, dirt, plants, mountains, etc. Probably not a city or urban landscape. - On the website, the still image is wider and actually shows a second large body in the background. So at minimum we know there are two of these "robots" if not multiples. Both of them have fallen but we don't know if this is due to the blast we see in the trailer or something else. Are they old and decaying/falling apart or is that damage from an event of some kind? Why is the character standing near them? Is there something valuable that he needs from them, is this a starting position within the game, or did he discover them through exploration? Given the colors in the image, I would imagine the monochromatic tones we get in the trailer won't always be there. - Also, we don't know for sure that the blast is expressly nuclear. It could be some other kind of energy or it could be something else entirely, but "ground zero" does suggest an explosion and given there is technology in this game it could be a bomb. The black goo-like material on the horizon does seem to have a similarity to what came out of the Colossi when they were killed. There could be a connection. That material also does not seem to impact the large robot when the blast wave hits. - The player character does seem to be mechanical to some degree. We aren't sure if this is a remotely operated avatar, cyborg, fully mechanical lifeform or what yet. There is a DISTINCT stylistic influence in the poncho that screams "Shadow of the Colossus". The mask/helmet/head of the player character also slightly resembles the masks worn by those who pursued Wander at the end of SotC. I think this will be set before the events of SotC. This culture could well be Wander's ancestors, hence the stylistic themes that persist in their attire. Clearly this culture is more advanced technologically and perhaps this technology led to their downfall or caused this cataclysm. The remote land could be a testing ground of some kind far away from where their citizens live. Something goes wrong and could destroy or remake the land. If it is contaminated, perhaps by this black goo, which may even be sentient, maybe this is the origin of the curse mentioned by the characters in SotC. The robots could become the Colossi, though these are very humanoid and many of the Colossi were based on animals. Perhaps the people who come after this event find a way to combine the goo/smoke with natural materials to restrain Dormin, who may have been a sentient noncorporeal being that was wreaking havoc on their land. Eventually these Colossi become deified by the residents of the Cursed Land, hence the temples and cities there, until something else wipes them out. But, we will see. Very excited to see what this game ends up being.

    Fantastic video! Once I realized you're about to go fully in on the subject, I just knew that you'll speak on Tenchu, and you did! Thank you! That made me happy. I grew up playing Tenchu for years becoming the best kid ninja in town, never met anyone who beat the game yet everyone was aware of it and they knew I was the only one not only to beat the game but to beat it in hard mode, getting a "Grandmaster" rank on every mission, which meant not being detected and consistently stealthy in killings, which also was the only way to unlock new ninja tools. Stealthily killing every single enemy in this dark, gloomy game and challenging all of the well design, very personable and unique bosses to a melee combat at the end of every mission, was the experience I will never forget. Tenchu was a incredible game kids were scared to play at first, but those who beat the fear of darkness and danger on every corner in this moody, atmospheric ninja game, were rewarded with the feeling like no other and the incredible story was priceless, it felt very personal, since the games did a great job, making protagonists feel relatable and on the journey to inspire good, eliminating evil pricks. That combination of gameplay, storytelling and a the atmosphere set in Japan is the Tenchu legacy and it carried itself well onto Sekiro, which was a dream coming into reality for someone who waits, every day, for a new Tenchu game, or a remake of the old ones. Tenchu and Sekiro to me represent a whole separate genre that is represented consistently by three elements. A atmosphere that terrifies you and lures you in at the same time, incredibly moody music that expresses your emotions while you play, sense of mistery and danger with every move, sense of openness being so you don't feel like there is a path to follow, but rather a location you arrived to with multiple ways to start exploring, all set in the world centered around realism crossing over to the realm of ugly, mutated by the hungry for death enemies, which were already present at the end of the first Tenchu game, where from consistently fighting enemis like samurais and other ninjas, all of the sudden you encounter supernatural mutations tormented in suffering, fitting in perfectly into the game. It all falls under the category of atmosphere. The other two being a gameplay and story which in short both must be mastered for a game like Tenchu and Sekiro. Gameplay hard and intense as it is being extra challenging and rewarding for players who fully immerse in the spirit of a true ninja, eliminating every single enemy flawlessly using stealth, and exploring the map searching for hidden secrets. The way Tenchu and Sekiro both follow a story that feels like a epic movie, filled with tragedy, loss after loss of warriors extremely likeable but corrupted by evil, who won't change, therefore must die, making us feel conflicted every time we defeat them. It's a way of the ninja. Please. Make more games like this! In Tenchu there was character selection and each ninja had unique missions, unlocking exclusive side of the story. I'd love if next game was closet to Tenchu than Sekiro. Where it's less open world and more mission oriented, allowing you to repeat specifc scenarios, give bosses a chance to rematch you and let's you rewatch the cutscenes if you win, having to start the mission from the beginning if you don't.

    In SOTC after we kill the 16º colossus, lord emon starts to point his hand at mono and he says some words which really look like he’s praying, that makes me really curious and I never found a translation to that, @Kouto do you know something about these words?

    Well, it feels like. The developers prioritized inserting woke narratives, rather than focus on the a good story. You can’t even disagree with the female qunari or change any of her ideas. In the first Dragon Age and Mass Effect, some characters held firm to their beliefs. But you could crack some of that armor and change them a little. And still get a good ending.

    i'm playing a game that just came out right now, Eternal Strands, and it's funny, sometimes I feel like I have pre-Project Robot vibes considering what we know about the game so far. In Eternal Strands there are giant robots that we fight a bit like those in SOTC, we climb on them etc. many people make the connection. Scattered around, in some places we can come across robots that are turned off or "dead" in different postures, vegetation that covers their bodies... when we beat the robots there are different parts of their bodies that end up on the ground... I know that there are a lot of people who are waiting for Project Robot very impatiently on this page, it's a nice feeling to kinda take a trip into the future and having like pre Project Robot vibes 🙂 consider giving a try to Eternal Strands if you don't know what to play right now. there's a demo on Steam and Epic store 👍

    I personally think that a big inspiration for the characters was chinese Oracle Bone, Bronze and especially Seal Script. Chinese has multiple sources for the Hanzi characters, though the relevant ones in this case are the pictograms and possibly ideograms. Looking at characters with clear pictographic basis, the logographic design is similar to the Yorda script. In the cases of characters like [M]ountain (山) and [R]iver (川) they even partially resembles the real world Hanzi characters for these words. Similar arguments could be made for [B]ird (鳥), [E]ast (東), [I]/Eye (目) and [T]ree (木) - especially looking at their Bronze or Seal Script iterations. As such, I think that while the connection to Hieroglyphics is reasonable and understandable as they share pictographic basis, the connection to Runic and Sumerian alphabets seems far more strenuous.

    So I Found 5 Refrences in Shadow of the colossus that i think shows GenDesign Next Game connects To It. 1# Star gates around the sand area at E6 on 13th Colossus who built them? What for? 2# there was once a City at C2 14th colossus what happened to the city? 3# The Forbidden Lands was cursed and sealed off from the outside world , is there more advanced technological civilization beyond the forbidden Lands? 4# The main Temple at the center of the map looks alot like the tower of babel 5# The 16 colossus Why were they build and for what use idol worship? Or was there 16 advanced technological cities ?

    Part of the reason Dormin moves so slow is that he has taken over Wander's body and Wander was just shot in the leg by an arrow. So Dormin also has this injury and thus limps when it moves.

    Do bare in mind I've never played this particular game so here are just some observations/ ideas I've made while watching. Idea 1: The language was never written and is passed down through spoken word more often then not, similar to ancient languages such as Brythonic/ Brittonic. Idea 2: The subtitles are a 'what if' scenario of what would said language be like if it were written down. Idea 3: All the symbols refer to 3 main themes, alive, natural and man made, the ones that have a defined eye B, D, G, H ,etc. Could be things that they seen as being sentient or having some sort of divinity/ holy nature. Idea 4: All the instances of written language are a commoner version used by lower classes whereas what was spoken by royalty would be a higher form of the same language/ more refined, but never written. Idea 5: The sarcophagus I think depicts 2 parents praying or begging over the loss of a child (I think indirectly since I would imagine most cultures seeing their children as divine/ special/ sentient), the box above depicting the sarcophagus itself and a something escaping like a soul, or it could be a prophesy for the child to escape. The '2 connected humans' could be enemies of the realm that have been bound together.

Some things that stood out to me are the symbol for "C" looks a lot like 血 (chi) meaning blood. The thing you identify at 11:03 looks like 心 (heart) especially when its written in ink. The top of the letter for W looks like the top of 登 (climb) or 発 (depart)

    This is so Tragic...I was so close to finally seeing the character Vargus put into an Berserk anime only for it be snatched due to company's who won't even make the anime. I won't say its impossible for an new Berserk anime with stuff like Vinland Saga, Ninja Kamui, and now Blut Vaat, being made but you're right about story's becoming more sanitized. While some writers and studios will push for explict content (Nobody asked to see an elf twist an orcs eye-ball in Middle-Earth Amazon...) others really tend to shy off from it. Like believe or not How to Train Your Dragon's original story in the books was a pretty complex and at times Gruesome and Frightening dark fantasy coming of age epic, while the DreamWorks version while doing the 'Coming of Age' thing left almost all the darker elements out, pretending their version is somehow the more grown-up story. Like I don't understand how they can look at something like The Green Death or even Furious and say 'Silly Talking Dragon!' when the dragon they chose to make 'ruler of all' would trigger the majority of other dragons in fiction, into their own personal Red-Rage! Furious was a tortured best who was willing to do anything to save his kind from their fate. Toothless in film3 is a hyperactive puppy. Who do you think told the heavier story? The 'children's' book author, or the Animation director? Sigh, being a HTTYD book fan is a fate more painful than being an Berserk fan.

    Cool video, although I think you've missed a really important aspect of the writing system; it is very clearly inspired by early Chinese scripts, esepcially bronze and seal scripts. Some of the characters in the fictional language clearly borrow 1-for-1 likeness of elements from these early scripts, and a lot of fantastical languages in Chinese and Japanese media (like the sacred language in Final Fantasy X), similar to how a lot of fictional and "arcane" alphabets in the West are inspired by Germanic runes. Even the prominence of repeating lines and circled dots is present.

    • @theKouto
      @theKouto 6 днів тому

      A great point! I totally skipped Asian writing system all together, not a great thing to do at all. And it definitely seems like there are good similarities with Chinese scripts indeed. It's curious since it does feel (to me at least) that Fumito really explores this relationship between Japan & China. Even The Colossi in SotC seem to be somewhat inspired by the Chinese Mythological figure of the Tao Tie and the overall ties between the Japanese & Chinese in terms of an ancient culture.

    In Theravada Buddhism (which I’m a practitioner) within advance meditation one comes into contact with a black goo that we call Vish. It is corruption that we believe comes from the Hindu mythology of The Churning Of The Ocean. During a utopian period, the gods in search of an elixir that gives eternal life, drilled a hole and accidentally punctured the fabric of space time unleashing corruption. That is the origin of the black substance.

    Pretty late to find this video, but when I saw the trailer I did exactly the same thing. Couple more things I noticed: The robotic voice shares a woman's and man's voice like Dormin. So even though it is English, there may still be a connection. When the character uses the jump pad, you can see more machinery on the valley floor in the distance. Finally, something I only put together after you shown me the promotional poster, is how the character is touching the robot. Those two robots are absolutely the same, even if their appearance may change throughout development. When the character gets to the top of the robot, he looks at the incoming shockwave, looks at the robot, reaches out to touch the robot (not simply for balance), and looks back at the shockwave. The way the character is touching the headless robot in the promotional poster matches the intimacy.

    I’m very new to ICO and it’s story, so as a bit of an outside perspective, the sarcophagi the do have Yorda’s language on them almost look like they’re made of a different material to the rest of the castle. So it seems like either the castle was build around them, maybe as an object of worship within the culture that came around later on. Or they could have been gifted from another country to help ‘treat’ the horned children. I feel it is more likely that these sarcophagi were created by an ancient culture (one that Yorda is a part of, or descendant of). Potentially one that the queen was originally part of as she does speak the language and has lived for a very long time. It is likely that the current culture discovered the sarcophagi and built the castle around them, which is why the language cannot be found anywhere else within the castle. This is a slightly different theory, but does tie into why Yorda is one of the only people to speak that language. I do wonder if the shadow children, as the remnants of the horned children that were placed in the sarcophagi, are actually used to create new yorda’s. Because ICO (who was placed in a sarcophagi temporarily) did have a vision of Yorda seemingly appearing and waking up from shadow. Almost as if she had just been created. Having him have this vision implies a stronger connection. As there is that glyph of the two people being connected, it could indicate the connection between the horned children and Yorda. That the horned children are sacrificed and fused together to create a new Yorda for the queen to take over. Changing them and alerting them. Likely wiping their memories and instilling new one’s, such as the ancient language. I do apologise if all of this has been widely spoken about or theorised and understood already, like I said, I’m new to all of ICO and haven’t learnt much about its world yet

      You have nothing to apologize for such an awesome comment! Yeah whoever built this castle, I believe it always had in mind this room specifically. There's no way you would built such an intricate castle without having that in mind in the first place. It reminds me heavily of ancient pyramids around the world and how they have hidden rooms everywhere. But who made it? This ancient civilization? Maybe the Sarcophagus Room had a completely different objective that was then appropriated by the Queen for her own objectives? Or maybe it was always designed as a sacrificial ritual? Hard to say perhaps. I agree with Yorda being used by the Queen as a sort of "vessel" for her to transfer herself into a new body, hence continuing her existence. For that she needs to make this ritual where a set number of horned boys must be sacrificed and their power is (I'm assuming) "imbued" in the new vessel. This theme seems to be one that is also transferred to SotC & TLG. We see 3 characters (in all 3 games) that are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to maintain their reality, to avoid death all together, prolonging their existence by any means necessary. In the case of TLG & ICO it's even more cruel, I would argue, since it's the life of children that's the main fuel. It's funny how the entire castle is run by water and light...symbols of purity and life...that hide the greatest of darkness and evil. Fitting of the Japanese way of thinking if you ask me. This game deserves a video analysing the castle structure and how it operates tbh!

    Imo, creating total sandboxes in stealth games is not a good but a terrible idea. People (modern audience) cannot understand that just because a game has an open world does not mean that it is definitely good. I mean how easy it is to sell the idea of an open world in anything, to children and dad gamers who do not know games as well as hardcore players, and the vast majority have never played Splinter cell Chaos Therory or Hitman: Blood Money or old Thief. MGS was never just a stealth game, and many people also forget about that, unfortunately... In my opinion, creating an open world in a stealth game is connected with many problems, with many sacrifices, with unnecessary work, with unnecessary cutscenes, unnecessary open, huge areas that are unnecessary for stealth games. Games should go back to their roots, and be linear. Imo best stealh game is: 1. SC: Chaos Theory 2. Thief 2 3. Hitman: Blood many None of these three have been beaten to this day, and no open world game with stealth elements will change that, I'm sure.

    In the past I tried to theorize that the castle wouldn't actually belong to the queen, but being stolen by her instead. I thought the sarcophagi and the idols would have been added later to the castle, and that would be why they'd have the same language/characters from Yorda/Queens language. I started to question this because I think it's strange that the castle have a graveyard with tombstones adorned by horns, and also some statues of horned warriors, so when I finished the game for the first time, I interpreted that the castle would have belonged to Ico's own lineage long ago in the past... but it's difficult to sustain that possibility when the castle archtecture is so well tied to the sacrificial hall, as we can see in MysticOde's videos exploring the details of the castle, also the language/writing use is more complicated than I noticed at first. I don't know, I like to imagine, nowadays, that the castle was populated once by horned people serving a lineage of kings and queens that, at some point, discovers the whole Dormin shit contained in their bodies and betrays them, in order to absorb their magical properties and live forever. Then the horned servants may have run away, I don't know... In the end, what really matters is what we can invent from these holes in the macro narrative.

    This makes me wonder if the Colossus were actually robots, just covered in moss. If this is indeed set in the same world, there is clearly some relation between this giant robot and the Colossus, even if it's just that one was made in imitation of the other. I have suspected in the past that Dormin was actually a kind of A.I. that was sealed away centuries before, strange as that may sound. “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” I know that The Last Guardian shows there was a technological advanced civilization at some point in this world.
