    This was a lovely video and your love of your home town is clear. I wish to particularly thank you for the respectful way in which you showed the war memorial which is of particular interest to myself. My Grandfather and 2 Brothers did what many thousands did on the outbreak of WW1 and joined the Army to fight for King and Country, little knowing what they bad let themselves in for! Of the three my Grandfather was the only one to survive. Now I know of the memorial I shall definitely visit it to honour my Grandpa's Brothers. All three were born and raised in Buxton but after the war Grandpa moved to Derby to work on the Midland Railway, l never got to meet him as he died 10 years before I was born. Thanks again for your work its is fascinating what you manage to discover.

    As a result of your videos I am beginning to realise that "it was demolished" sums up Buxton's interest in preserving some of its better buildings. Its hard to understand why the powers that be in what is, or was, Derbyshire's most attractive town could have presided over the loss of so many historic and attractive buildings. Mind you the same can be said about Derby, my home town, so perhaps Buxton is not so different? Keep em coming.

    Very informative video. I would have liked the council to at least send a link to me as I live in the area. Not to knock the council totally - they are pretty good at some things. EG they sorted out the bus shelter opposite my house in fairly quick time. However.on the bigger projects they drag their feet. Any new project will take years to be agreed, and then whoever they've contracted to do the work will go bankrupt. I've worked for the council and I've seen it from the inside. Don't hold your breath.

    • @Leock

      Well I’m hoping the government will push this project as if it is not delivered before 2030 the funding is revoked. I’ve had a letter through the door about a month or two ago asking for opinions on the project but that’s about it so far. Thank you for watching and commenting :)

    Another great video. I can remember when you could walk through the arcades which were the indoor market hall bit and come out on the slopes. HPBC cannibalised them for more office space and to build the toilets, which were previously underground (as you look at the town hall from the pedestrian crossing with the New Inn behind you), just to the right of the crossing around what is now the entrance to the car park. I also worked for a guy from New Mills who had a contract with the council to do minor electrical installations/maintenance work, which would often be at the town hall. This sometimes required access to the cellar, which only seemed to run along one half of the building. When I asked the lads I worked with why there wasn't another cellar along the opposite side ,they claimed there was and they worked down there around the time they built the public toilets and created the office space I mentioned, and that side of the cellar was converted into an emergency command bunker for the council in the event of disasters or nuclear war, as well as claiming this bunker couldn't be accessed from within the town hall itself. I'm still not sure if they were pulling my leg, but it was certainly around the time when the government were doing that kind of thing elsewhere!

    • @Leock
      @Leock Місяць тому

      Hmmm that’s intriguing and it’s such a shame they converted the bottom part especially considering the office space isn’t used anymore.

    A home for the museum perhaps. Last time I was there was a few years ago on an administrative matter at the registry office. I think the good citizens of Buxton should fight to keep it. Surely it can be turned into an useful asset. The shop next door, when I was a lot younger, used to be Mr Phillips bicycle shop. Used to go there to get wheels straightened and buy various bits and pieces. I used to roam all over the high peak on two wheels. We used to practice hill climbing on Holker Road. Thanks for the video. I look forward to them and good luck with the Gardens Lake. I swam across that one night, many moons ago, for a bet and I have pictures of my mother skating on it in the winter of 1947. Take care.

    First, well done on the blood donations, it's a gift worth more than money. I got to just over 200 before I had to stop for medical reasons. Secondly, it's a crying shame that we could build such beautiful buildings a century ago but modern buildings look like garbage.

    • @Leock
      @Leock Місяць тому

      Wow I could only hope I can get to 200 in the future that’s amazing! It is a shame but I have hope, a lot of people are against modernism to the point we are looking into the past for architectural inspiration and of course planning laws are changing as well. I can’t say the Devonshire house (the new care home) is a building to write home about but it certainly respects its surroundings far better than most and is a good step in the right direction. Another lovely example is the new town of poundsbury down south.

    The Future of the Monsal Trail has divided everybody. Personally, I believe it's time for the railway to be returned; the current public transport along the A6 corridor is inadequate. People are saying it'll not get passengers using it. I disagree: 1. The Middlewood Way in Cheshire is a cycling and walking route accessible by the current Buxton to Manchester Piccadilly train. 2. The markets at Buxton and Bakewell would encourage usage; parking at these towns is difficult, especially during market days 3. The Heights of Abraham is on the doorstep to Matlock Bath Station. 4. If Crich Quarry becomes the Amber Rock Resort, one way of reducing the traffic (which Crich residents are worried about; a huge tourist attraction means more traffic) is by opening Whatstandwell Station to a bigger audience.

    There's now a bus route to the Hope Valley. However, It does differ to my route suggested at the end of the video, a video is out now in the BBM series about this bus.

    Thanks for the link to my site Leo. As the first comment suggests, these aren't simply markers for a joint, they actually contain the connection. There are a few different designs, but they're becoming relatively rare now so good to do a video on them.

      Thank you for watching and making the site, I must admit I needed to spend alot more time researching and scripting for this video than I did, It’s not the best. However, since making the video it been rather interesting how many other GPO designs I’ve seen across the town.

    Really good video, Leo. But also a bit depressing to see just how far the street has deteriorated over the years.
