  • Exploring a tunnel underneath Harpur Hill quarry and a little extra.
A huge thank you to John for emailing me and making this video possible.
I believe the tunnel was built for drainage and the toilet block was for the quarry but of course, If you have a better idea then please leave a comment below :)

Top man for cleaning up. I would say that was an attempt at a wagon way or possibly a survey tunnel but they usually run downhill

Thank you, it certainly looks like the tunnel was made for a proper purpose like a wagon way just going off the way it’s made more permanently

My first guess is the tunnel was built for storage, possibly a weapons cache during WW2. The building materials look about the right age and there is even a guards cutout at the entrance. Of course I don't know the geography of the area so it is very much just a guess.

Only issue with that is there is an actual munitions tunnel system not even 500m away. That all being of a concrete construction so I’d doubt it was used the same way.

That was really interesting Leo I have a number of ideas what it may have been used for but they have already been suggested. I really do hope that you take care before entering these places as given age and water ingress they may be vulnerable to collapse, if you don't already do it now always let someone know where you are going and arrange a safe and well call, at least then should you fall or something else happen to you they will know where you are likely to be.

Don’t worry I always do call outs before entering places underground and check for weaknesses as I go through :)

Ah, thanks for reading my email, yeah nobody really knows what that tunnel was used for. My best guess is a water outflow because if you look at old maps of the area pre 1930's there is a reservoir around where the Parks inn is.

Drainage was certainly one of my best guesses. Apologises the video wasn’t uploaded with permission considering the video is all your idea. I did reply to email and was going to wait for a response. However, this weeks video I couldn’t finish in time and this is what I could do quickly.

If that was by me! The kids would have found a way to burn it and cover it in graffiti!

Some kids have indeed found it but thankfully haven’t fully trashed it… yet
