With so many new book releases coming out every year, it feels almost impossible to get to them all. Here are 24 books that I honestly wanted to read but didn't have a chance. Will I be able to fit them into my 2025 plans, or will they continue to go stale on my TBR shelf? Is the Book Always Better?-My Thoughts on Wicked and 6 Movies That Outshine Their Books
Переглядів 240Місяць тому
I recently watched the Wicked movie and it really got me thinking about adaptations and how they are received by the public. In the bookish community we always hear the phrase 'the book was better' and although that is usually true, I think there are some notable exceptions. In this video I will talk about my Wicked experience and also highlight 6 movies that I think did it better than their so...

End of the Year Book Tag - 2024

I can't believe we are so close to the end of this year! Now is the perfect time to reflect on my reading goals for this year and make sure I am still on track. This tag is the perfect way to do that! Questions: 1.Are there any books you've started this year that you still need to finish? 2. Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year? 3. Is there a new release you're st...

Wow, yet another fantastic summary of your reads! I always have to add to my TBR list after watching your videos! After I read Piranesi I was obsessed with Susanna Clarke and I read JS & MN. Really enjoyed it and will check out the series. Happy 2025!

I too really enjoyed The Most. As you mentioned, it packed a lot into a small book. So well done! I didn’t enjoy The Empusium as much as her book Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead. And, Mrs. Caliban was such a touching story and a real delight to read. I’m planning to read The Snow Child this winter. Really looking forward to it! ❄️. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell piques my interest but I am intimidated by long books. Maybe I’ll pick it up one day. As always, I am a big fan of your channel!

Happy new year! Another wonderful video, Gretchen. Like other comments have stated, I love listening to you talk about your recent reads. The way you talk about books is so invigorating and exciting. Unrelated, I always find myself looking at the bookshelves behind you and wondering what books you’ve collected. If you’d be interested in doing a bookshelf tour, I’m sure it would be a lovely video! But also, that seems like it would be a huge task so no pressure if that idea doesn’t interest you 😅

I'm so glad you enjoyed Mrs. Caliban! It's a favorite of mine and I've read reviews that call it "close to perfect". Rachel Ingalls was born in the US and moved to the UK which is where she wrote and published. I also enjoyed her book Binstead's Safari. TheBookchemist does a nice review of Mrs. Caliban.

Happy new year Gretchen, I’m looking forward to hear what your favourite books from last year were. If you’re still keen on reading War and Peace it’s not too late to join the slow read hosted by Simon Haisell at Footnotes and Tangents. It’s in its third and final year and I’m enjoying it immensely so far. It has just under 365 chapters, and they’re much shorter then Les Mis 😅

Also really enjoyed Empusium and The Snow Child this year. Waiting anxiously for Ivey's new book in Feb! I came to read Jonathan Strange after seeing the mini series. It is a book that I find myself rereading with excitement every 5 years or so and I rarely reread books. Love and cherish Piranesi as well. I enjoyed the tv adaptation of J Strange mostly because of the actors, but approach it as different than the book to not be disappointed. The story is shortened, but still good. It cannot compare though because no adaptation of a Susanna Clark novel can transport you into a magical world the way she does with her amazing prose. Here's to lots of amazing reads in 2025!🥳

I appreciated the epusium and I am not sorry I read it. however, obviously, my taste is literary not literature. it would be a great lit class but as a read it was work. I felt like I should have written a paper. it is easily recognizable as a tribute to mann.

I loved The Coast Road! I can't wait to read Praiseworthy, Passiontide, The Lost Love Songs of Boysie Singh and Hard by a Great Forest. I'm going to try to tip-toe past the long-lists for both of The Women's Prizes and The International Booker in an effort to read the books I have on my shelves and maybe read some of the short lists, or the winners. FOMO made me purchase too many books that I really didn't enjoy this year. Agree, Ben's prompts are great!

Hey Gretchen! Thanks for the shout out about the Aspen Longlist challenge. You probably already noticed, but Fire Exit will satisfy Ben’s February prompt as well, so there ya go! I just joined his challenge on StoryGraph. With all of my other 2025 reading goals, I think some of my books will fit into those slots for sure and it will be fun. In regards to your 24 missed in 24, the books that I have read from your list that I will weigh in on for you getting to them, because they were really good: Clear, Covenant of Water Books that I also have physical copies of but did not get yet either that you have in your video: Praiseworthy Night Alphabet (which I also ordered from Blackstone’s 🫣) The Coast Road Books that I own and I missed in 2024 that aren’t in your video: There are Rivers in the Sky Whale Fall Catalina Gliff The Position of Spoons The Sequel Hard by a Great Forest The History of Sound The Watermark
