Art Regression, Perfectionism, And How Both Intersect
Переглядів 73521 день тому
Art regression seems to have become a bit of a hot topic in the art community in the last few weeks, and it's a subject that a lot of artists (myself included) seem to dread. But what exactly is art regression? And what does this have to do with perfectionism, like the title of this video implies? This video was a bit trickier to write about, since I have a complicated relationship with both pe...
Redesigning Some Old Characters! (Speedpaint + Commentary)
Переглядів 7 тис.Місяць тому
Today I'm joining the Character Redesigning Club and redesigning some characters from an old comic project of mine! I spent much of my childhood working on this story and it got many changes over the years, but the core of the story remained the same: a group of high school students fighting monsters and alien-like beings from another world. For a long time I didn't think to reboot this story a...

When I was a kid, I had two stories that I greatly enjoyed developing and were, at the time, very special to me. Unfortunately, they were never finished to completion (sad times), but I always wondered how I could rework them as the years passed. I honestly hate Wuwa's design methodology bc a lot of the characters, esp women, don't look anything like what they're supposed to be. I mean take Yangyang for example, you cannot look me in the eye and say that what she's wearing is a Midnight Rangers uniform. It doesn't even look like an outrider/military uniform at all, I thought she was some random sweetheart type girl or even a singer when I first saw her design. Then there's other examples like how Baizhi doesnt look like a scientist, Taoqi doesn't look like someome affiliated with the military at all, let alone as a director (wtf is her outfit, she looks like she put some uniform items over a nightdress and called it a day), etc. All in all Wuwa's designs lack direction a lot of the time where at most, they just seem like the same flavor: "pretty person in warcore or Asian outfit" save for some exceptions that do have good designs. I can rarely really tell what kind of profession a character is at first glance. Genshin's designs are so much more focused and well directed where you can just tell, or at least have some guess, as to what the character's profession or motif is at first glance without even knowing a thing about them. With Wuwa, it always takes a hint or two to actually guess.

In my humble opinion, I think ai has a couple uses in the art world, just not regular PICTURE art (I can definitely see why artists have a bone to pick with AI art there), but in animation, you see, even if you hire the BEST animators in the world, it will still take forever to make a single episode of an anime or series, so what I think the animators do is instead of drawing like 60 frames per second, they instead draw like 10 or 15 and the AI handles everything in between and the animators just clean up the inconsistencies that come with the AI, I think AI art is great at what it does, but I think it's EVEN BETTER if there is human moderation as well, thank you for coming to my ted talk.

IT really does depend on if you like more muted or colorfull pallett. Kuro really loves the Dark dingy post apocalyptic colors if pgr IS anything to go by. Their biggest inspo IS neir automata (which they partnered with in pgr) so kuro loves muted colors.

also I think that designes are made to match the world. like in genshin world is vibrant and colorful and so are the designs, but wuwa has "darker", gloomier world and so are the designs and in both games setting is different. so you can't really compare these designs

As a character DESIGN i like genshin because they do research into the cultures for their clothes and hidden symbolisms. Ofc there can be improvement and i love watching character redesigns on tiktok but overall i like how detailed they are. As for wuthering waves, ur so right about their shapes and colour schemes not telling much of a story. I do like the greys, whites, and blacks being used in their outfits because it fits the tone for the landscape. Genshin’s landscapes are very saturated compared to wuwa’s landscape atmosphere. Its like genshin is a flower field in daylight while wuwa is a dense foggy forest at night. I absolutely love wuwa’s face type ranges though, i was looking at the male character’s noses side profile and theyre all kinda different. I wish genshin took inspiration from that and made a variety of eye shapes like slanted and droopy instead of just O-O and =.= with different heights on the face.

To be honest there’s barely any diversity in age in genshin, what I mean is when a supposedly older character literally looks like a young 20-year-old, I really hope Kuro Games keeps up with making some characters look middle-aged like they’re supposed to with future characters because there's only one male character that looks middle-aged😭 (I was happy as fuck to see that design though because genshin was literally SCARED of facial hair and they made mostly teens or characters that look like teens)

Plus editing was also on point in this video. I want both Teresa’s and Idalia’s boots. 💯 I think that Shika and Idalia are literally my fav characters so far… Shika for their abilities plus personality and then Idalia because of personality and design. I would defs love to cosplay Idalia also both her sword and Elea Scythe designs goes extremely hard. LOVE IT 👌😏💜

I LOVE genshins charecter designs. ALL of them, or course some less than others (except emlie idk what they were tryna do with her, also baizhu but i dont particularly hate his design). Ive only seen bits of wuwa and its characters and came into the video expecting to be fully choosing genshin designs over wuwa based on my first impressions (basically comparing my very initial reaction to genshin characters upon seeing then first time and wuwa charecters). Genuinely got suprised by how good the wuwa designs are. I dont think i could choose which i like better comparing individually. However as mentioned when you look on a whole the colour pallete lack diversity and it seems more difficult to differentiate between characters and what grps they are from. Also the silhouettes are lacking without their dynamic arts. I barely ever saw new players mistake genshin character for another and each charecter is very recognisable without needing much thinking to identify. Where as for wuwa as a new player id definitely struggle a bit more with remembering them and and getting familiar with the designs. Individually and subjectively i cant choose one over the other or even compare as they are set in a very different world with a different vibe. But objectively in regards to character designing and games that have a ton of charecters, genshin ticks all the boxes for good designs individually and overall. Except the same face thing (but id say its less of a charecter design problem and more of a limited model issue but it addsinto the overall comparison) and maybe being overly detailed but I dont consider that as a negative since the details work well with each other and dont overcrowd except for maybe a couple charecters. And "over saturated" isnt even something to consider it fits the world and just considered an art style. In a world where theres atleast 10 different kind of magic/power systems where it seems anything is possible and inspired by several different cultures why be boring and dull. If you can make it work why add any less details. When we spend hrs playing and looking at (and some even paying for) the same characters isnt it better to have more nice little things to look at. I could write pages on why genshins designs are brilliant especially for a game where theres going to be like prolly more than 100 characters in the near future and all need to be fairly distinct.

genshin totally the best at playable character, but i hope hoyoverse put more effort on npc, especially an important npc that related to some quest. take example teppei which die but his model are spread around teyvat, and also dottore which have a worst design i hope hoyo learn how wuwa treat its npc, just see the side quest. there are lot of unique design for it npc (mt firmament side quest, dim forest side quest, and that dragon ball positioning side quest) because at the end, npc was an important part of world building.

The thing that's always bothered me about Genshin's designs (and Mihoyo's designs in general to be honest) is how they kind of feel a bit incongruent with the world the game is trying to portray. Like I'm gonna use an HSR example here (since I've played that game way more than Genshin) but in the under city of Belobog the story really tries to reinforce how rough these people have it, and how much life can be a savage struggle for survival. All that's cool. Now how much of that do you actually get from looking at the characters? How about none at all (or very little if I'm being totally fair)! Like there's a point where Seele keeps going on about how hard life is compared to the upper city and I'm like "Lady you are walking around in a runway model outfit with a see through belly shirt, forgive me for not taking your complaints about how poor everyone is here that seriously." I'll give Natasha some points for looking like she belongs in the place that the story is describing but she's like the only one. Even the NPCs look way too clean and well kept, I mean compare the game visually to Arcane to see an example of how much better it can be done.

  • @Kindawgs
    @Kindawgs 19 днів тому

They're both very different. Genshin is more into fantasy and pre-technology, and wuwa is more into cyberpunk, and realism. To be honest I cant pick a favourite between them, but if there was a game that would combine the two aspects it wouldn't be good anyway.

WuWa follow PGR footsteps where their characters have their own roles like soldiers, agents, officers, goddess or some ordinary person with magic. Its not just about the design its about how the the design tells the character.

  • @_Choco_

Genshin, in my opinion, has objectively better and more unique character designs. WuWu's character designs are definitely a lot more simple, however the one thing that is better is their character models. Although I do think it is strange to compare to games with very distinct open world and story. Genshin is an overall bright fantasy world, while WuWu is a dark apocalyptic world. So, of course, the character designs will be very different, and it's completely up to taste and opinion on which one you prefer.

I had to turn on captions to realize this is what you were asking for lol my bad. 🎨Also, I was eating soup while watching this. 😹 As I understand it, Tiktok is even more of a giant popularity contest than most other social media sites and I think people don't realize or don't care that the site is most popular with younger generations so it's a combination of kids/teens being mean to each other online and older people who have less tact and don't realize they're talking to someone that young. They should all be kinder to begin with but it's some very immature personalities combined with adults who might not even realize how impressionable this person is. And it gets toxic real fast. Also, while art is subjective, I think there's artists who just want to help and they try to give advice without considering how it might come off as well as people who don't consider themselves artists or know much with regard to techniques trying to understand why they don't like what they're seeing and how the result turned out as it did. Some of these people don't mean to be rude; art criticism is edit: a learned skill and a touchy subject. As someone who mostly doesn't get any responses on my creative endeavors, I often assume any commentary is better than none but I often overlooked whether it was actually asked for and if what I said could be taken the wrong way or touch a hidden sore spot. And then there are the emotions wrapped up in art. We often love what we love in an instant and can't always explain why but when we first experience something and then experience it again on another day, it might hit different. Not just from growth and learning what the flaws are but for someone who isn't the artist and has no idea. You can't always know how something will make you feel and people tend to feel something about art, even flawed art usually evokes a reaction, and we'll often love it in spite of its flaws (since nothing is ever truly perfect anyway) but sometimes the absence of feeling can be a problem as well (when something is technically brilliant but lacks any passion, for example.) I realize that you were only talking about regression and how perfectionism and the art journey can impact that but I think exploring what counts as "bad art" is a relevant thing too. There's something called Heta-Uma I tried to search up again (I always forget the name, it's Japanese) and while I was hunting it down I found out there's a Museum of Bad Art lol tied to something Wikipedia referred to as Bad Painting specifically. Maybe that goes too far into the weeds but I think these things are interesting because you can't really remove the human element (or at least the living element, in the case of other animals) when it comes to actual art (as opposed to AI.) Actually, on that note, with the proliferation of AI and people trying to identify if something is AI when it isn't labeled as such, we're probably going to see a lot more people on the internet squinting with suspicion and asking "but why does it look like that?" Another edit: It's taken me a long time and reading/watching other people's thoughts to understand that art is a journey and if we view it that way, then we have to remember that a statistical graph and a road map are two different things even if one can inform the other. If that even makes any sense lol I'm not sure if it does. I might be talking out of my sphincter rn.

As a student who is studying animation and to hopefully get into a character design field of work when im older, this topic is interesting to me. My take is that no matter what aesthetic you may prefer, genshin, although not perfect has objectively better character design. If you ever seen any video on character design or talked to anyone who has experience in this field, you will always get the same idea of what a good character design includes. - A distinguishable silhouette and shape - Character design reflects personality - tells a story/narrative - a distinct colour pallette From looking at characters of Genshin and wuwa, in my opinion genshin accomplishes these things better than wuwa does, whereas wuwa is more focused on fanservice and visual appeal (aka, “lets make this character attractive and put them in cute clothes”).

WW characters are like a Grey scale, Genshin characters are like a rainbow.

My opinion is that real hand-drawn art makes my brain tingle and my eyes glow but ai “art” makes me feel uncomfortable and everytime I look at it, it feels unsettling
