What Goes Into Character Creation and Development? (Creating Engaging Characters)
Characters are, more often than not, a very important part of crafting a story. In storytelling, a character is some form of being that extends the plot and pushes the narrative forward. There is no story without a character, and if there are no characters then the themes, message and plot of the story can’t be properly executed.
But how exactly do you go about creating a character?

Internet Art Scams and How to Avoid Them (The Scams Targeting Artists)
Переглядів 10 тис.14 днів тому
Internet scams are becoming quite common (if they aren't already), and scams targeted towards artists are no exception. Having almost fallen for a few of these myself in recent months, I figured it was time to air out the beef I have towards scammers in general, so today I'll be talking about some of the scams that can be aimed towards artists and content creators, as well as how to avoid them ...

8 Things I Learned While Making Comics In Art School
Переглядів 6 тис.3 місяці тому
I’ve mentioned several times in the past that I have a degree in cartooning/making comics. Even as a kid, I enjoyed making comic strips of whatever stories I had in my head. In fact, I liked making them so much that I went on to college with the goal of making comics for a living. Even though that experience was a bit of a roller coaster, there were still some valuable tips I learned during my ...

Art Regression, Perfectionism, And How Both Intersect
Переглядів 1,8 тис.5 місяців тому
Art regression seems to have become a bit of a hot topic in the art community in the last few weeks, and it's a subject that a lot of artists (myself included) seem to dread. But what exactly is art regression? And what does this have to do with perfectionism, like the title of this video implies? This video was a bit trickier to write about, since I have a complicated relationship with both pe...
Redesigning Some Old Characters! (Speedpaint + Commentary)
Переглядів 13 тис.5 місяців тому
Today I'm joining the Character Redesigning Club and redesigning some characters from an old comic project of mine! I spent much of my childhood working on this story and it got many changes over the years, but the core of the story remained the same: a group of high school students fighting monsters and alien-like beings from another world. For a long time I didn't think to reboot this story a...
How Recycling Old Story Ideas Helped Me (And How It Can Work For You)
Переглядів 6026 місяців тому
When I was a kid, I had two stories that I greatly enjoyed developing and were, at the time, very special to me. Unfortunately, they were never finished to completion (sad times), but I always wondered how I could rework them as the years passed. One of my college teachers said to let your old story ideas go (and I can kinda see why), but you still shouldn't yeet your old ideas into the Abyss n...

Remaking an Old Comic (feat. a few tips)! - Part 3
Another scam that’s worth to be on the lookout for is the “referse-commission scam” (as I will coin it here). It works just like the commission scam, but with the scammer offering to do a commission for YOU and not the other way around. They will typically say a very generic hi or hey. A more clever one might compliment your pfp. They will proceed to ask if they can show you their art, and will be a bit insistent about it (this is, in of itself, one of the red flags). Some major red flags I’ve noticed: - the scammer will claim their art is “amazing,” and might even tell you their art is better than yours. Real artists typically do not (and should not) talk like this. Real artists tend to be humble and even insecure about their art, no matter how skilled they are. - the fact that the artist is asking YOU if you would like to commission them and not the other way around could in of itself be a red flag. - If you let them post their “art,” it is usually fake, stolen, AI slop, or a combination of the above. It doesn’t take much effort to avoid this scam due to how laughable it is, but I think it’s still good to know about - especially if you’re not an artist.
Somebody tried the second method you menitoned on me. They send me a picture of their child and had more of that same child on their page. I told them to give me 3 Days to come up with a variety of sketches. The next day I wanted to check the specifics once more before starting, however, their Account was gone... A month later I learned that I dodged a bullet there >-<
The art design in Genshin in 2d is good but ingame it feels like no souls
I lost a hundred dollars bc of one of these scams. Thank you for taking about this ♡ Edit: I had posted on Cara, got a dm from there for a commission, made the drawing, made a stupid mistake of sending them my PayPal email, got the refund email, got scared and sent em my money. Worst day of my life. Had to sell my body online for a while to make most of the money back since I didn't want my parents seeing all the money gone from my account. Thank frick I grew up.
Great vid! For my characters, I usually come up with a short idea that barely counts as a sentence. For an example let’s say I randomly thought, “feral Egyptian cat”. From that I’d research thing from Egyptian times, and then let’s say I found the common fact that cats were seen as gods in Egypt. Ok so there’s now a feral Egyptian cat seen as god. So what if the “feral” part was seen from people as a blood thirsty god that cannot be tamed? What if the people take advantage of this for war? That’s a good start. And in ancient Egypt, hema means “blood”, so we name the cat Hema. With that, you would expand upon the based trait, and where it was potentially discovered from. That’s a good way to find out the backstory, but you may find other ways of creating one. For simplicities sake, the backstory is that Hema was found on the streets. This can also allow for certain enemies of things Hema saw on the streets. Who are those enemies? How would they affect Hema? With that, the oc is made, and possibly others that fit along with it. The final result is Hema the Egyptian god, who is really a feral street cat. They were taken in, and use their worshippers to take out their enemies. However, the people take advantage of the cat, using it for an excuse for war. Hema must now find out how to tame their subjects, so that they can achieve their own goals. Though the language barrier of it being a cat makes it hard, so they’ll have to try other ways. Done. With that you go from a simple concept to a character. Of course, there are other things I didn’t mention, but this comment is getting long lol. Bye!
Stealing this for my ocs
i cant find the squid emoji so i will just comment this. also, has anyone else ever run into a fake free artwork scam? someone will say they want to paint you or draw you for free. I am actually unsure if its a scam, but it has happened to me too many times for it to be genuine.

The details are insane
13:00 Believe it or not the grammer mistakes are not a bug, they are a feature. Its a test to filter out the smart individuals and keep the dumber ones. Scammers don't want to waste time pulling someone in with an authentic invitation with all the right words and lingo, only for them to bauk at the obvious scam when it comes time for payment. They want people dumb as bricks who aren't going to question anything. Hence the bad grammer, if you aren't questioning why it looks like they never passed third grade grammer then you're probably not going to question why they need you to change the money into crypto when things like paypal and cashapp exist.
Scams targeting artists? How about artists that are the scamers themselves? I write fanfiction and I have gotten about over 100 people asking me to make a commission cause they "Really love my work." Even though they won't ever review and say what they like and didn't like. But yea. Even when I interact with them it felt lifeless and they really wanted to push me to make a commission like I would explain ideas and they would jump to payment so quickly! And charge ridiculous prices for one character, even half a character would take most my paycheck. So I feel it's only fair that artists themselves can and are scammers. Either bots or just have terrible ways of marketing.
I have dealt with bunch of scammers on Instagram and twitter after my commission have been reopened but i am glad i didn't fall for them However recently i have to do strict protocals for anyone who do business transactions with me including commission because increase of scammer such a sad world we live in

When you explained the over charge scam, that one isn't limited to art sadly. I had been job hunting a couple years back and there is a remote work position scam where an "employer" states you're hired and will send you a check for supplies. TLDR they'll either have you send them a check for the difference of a check with too much money or scam you for your bank acct routing number. I freaking hate humans sometimes.
Well, I've been hacked once, but never took my money cause one person sent me a message saying I was going to get a banned scam. It happened on Discord right on my birthday on June 19. Of course, I did get shadow-banned from an old livestreaming site before Twitch saying I was too awkward of all penguins despite my high-functioning autism. The guy want to screenshot of my bank account, and then he hacked my Discord account and caused some damage to my reputation, but not my money. I have a severe mental illness that affects my life after all that hate spread to me.
🦑 Thanks for making this, weird how scammers are so obsessed with artists in particular, I'm curious what the success rate is compared to other targeted demographics for them to keep doing this or if they're just chasing a crappy return compared to other options. Small fish scams in general are becoming more and more desperate and in turn pathetic.
Thanks for the forecast! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
I swear artists have everything against them (scams, AI, etc.) when it comes to making that little bit of money to stay afloat
Oh I got a scammer saying this same message if I’m Available for a commission. I said I am and immediately got I want you to draw a portrait of my pets, I knew it was a scam and blocked them. I think this person might tried used PayPal but I don’t own paypal at all so the person will be dumb enough to think I do. This happened on instagram, yesterday.
i have commissions open and i havent gotten anyone yet but im worried about this so much, thank you for this information
if the client drastically changes the theme at any time, its a scam. If they try pay you with anything but the currency you ask for, its a scam. If they try push to pay after the commission is finished, don't trust them unless its a client who either is a repeat customer or has a portfolio of multiple commission works made for them. Don't do free samples.
🦑🦑🦑
It's important to note that for cons of this nature poor grammar is generally used as a form of mark selection. It's best simplified as "if someone were to be dumb enough to fall for this first part, they'd likely be dumb enough to fall for following parts of this scam." Not always the case, ofc, and this is more applicable for more explicit forms of self-selection when it comes to phone scams ("this is the IRS and you owe us money" and the like), which focus on widespread scammage and therefore would rather not waste time on someone who isn't going to give them money, but it's still important to keep in mind that poor grammar is _usually_ intentional. Also remember: the "con" part of "conman" is short for "confidence". Never get too complacent or cocky about your position, scammers and conmen alike are specifically looking to exploit that.
Ever since I heard of the "accidentally pay too much" scam, I came up with the idea that I could preface the whole deal with "if you pay more than intended, I'm taking it as a tip and that's that, you're not getting it back". I'm sure that wouldn't actually work because maybe they'd call for legal intervention or "expose" me for this thing that would be known the moment you read my commission info page/document/thingy, but everyone wants to scam a scammer, yeah? "Oh noooo, I accidentally sent you _too much_ money, can you send it back-" "Thanks for the hefty tip, man. Peace."
Very helpful! Thank you very much!🦑✨️
The worst that can happen if you just click some sketchy link (without doing any actions on the website it leads to) is an IP grabber (the person that sent the link will get your IP). No website can steal your info without you typing it in there or install a virus on your pc without you downloading and opening a file. (That *doesn't mean you should* click random links)
1 thing im sometime thankfull is that i often forget to look at my dms other time i tend look at it but there really odd or random talk Often the. Look at there profile But lately had 10 people where mabey only 3 where normale people but other where questionable, because i follow many many artist i tend get post from them about scammers or info that people need be aware. On twt i get so many request also on DA but often i dont look at it because i may saw it but i tend forget very fast i Rememeber almost or click on 1 on DA back then but never made acc on that nor went through it but i was way younger then. But due fact i keep forgetting afther 2/3 days due other things i tend never look back at it maney afther month again. Also i tend have strick perants where i need have primmison for many things so i often tell them i caint need talk to my perants and the government person becaus have them so they tend backoff
This stuff happened to me on DeviantArt vs ig.
🦑
I’ve been seeing a lot of these on DeviantArt through the past years. It’s so obvious it’s a scam that it hurts, and I’m still considered a beginner artist!
What do legitimate inquiries look like?
There's a scam I see on DA pretty often lately where someone who's claiming to be an artist will say they want to use one of your pieces as inspiration and treat a commission they're working on as a collab. They'll claim their client wants to send you a check which will be fake. They'll want you to take some amount of the money sent to you and forward it to them, then shortly after your bank will recognize the check as fraudulent and cancel those funds. You'll be out whatever money was requested you forward. It's also known as the Muse Scam and it's been making rounds the past few years. It's getting common enough that it's worth knowing about going forward.
As someone who’s going to open commissions soon and is kind of nervous about it, thank you for this video!
Great vid and very informative, I've had one of these Insta scams, where there's a lady offering a budget of $700 for portraits of her kids, I told her no that I only do certain types of commissions, I was afraid she would do chargebacks and get free art from me. On a different topic, I always regret not answering DMs on X because I have notifications disabled (I wish you can separate normal notifs from DM notifs) but now I don't feel so bad after seeing that there can be so many scammers around 😵💫 but I'll try to pay attention and be less paranoid, sorry for my bad english
I got curious with one of my own and said " I haven't done a commission before, this one will be free" This fucker wouldn't shut up n insist on paying with a check, telling me to take the 20$ n give back the rest. My sister looked at it, the date was invalid.
0:08 "before it became a hot dumpster fire" It was even before it became X. :')
I've had 2 that messaged me and asked me if i did comissions but i refused cuz they were awfully suspicious. Their profile pages were empty and they basically had the same username!
It's not possible to get a virus just by clicking a link. It's possible to *download* a virus through a link, but the link itself cannot run the program to actually start the virus. If you ever visit a sketchy site and some random file is downloaded, just delete it.
🐙 Thanks for doing this video. ArtStation is crawling with the NFT scammers. Its funny they say they want to buy your work, but its you that needs to pay??? 😂
🦑 I think I'm the only one who watched the video all the way to the end )= Where's the squids at
This is why I stopped using social media and bigger sites like DA to host my art. Too many scammers~ 🦑
I've fallen for such a scam when I started out giving commissions 10 years ago when I was young and naive. I usually ask for partial payment after each stage if the client say that they're satisfied, but back then this client on Deviantart said they will pay in full plus extra, but after I gave the full commission and asked for payment the "mother" of the person said that shes a lawyer and can sue me because I have caused her daughter undue stress. Then after several times when I don't receive my end of the art trades on Neopets art forum, I've stopped all art trdes and commissions altogether since I earn a lot more money from teaching Music.
