Small Tool Revival
United Kingdom
Приєднався 13 лип 2022
Welcome to my channel. I’m an amateur tinkerer who enjoys trying to make rusty things look prettier and work better.
Most of the bits and bobs I work on are car boot finds that look interesting to me or my team (wife and daughter) of rusty retrievers.
I'm hoping to upload a new video every few weeks.
Hope you find my videos interesting.

Small Vintage Socket Set Renewal - 4K
This is my restoration of an old rusty socket set.
I really like this simple design, and have wanted to do a video with something like this for a while.
The tin was in a really bad shape with significant pitting all over.
I used far too much filler to smooth out the outside surfaces, and it took longer than it should’ve to sand it down. I’ve learnt for next time that; ‘less is more’.
Although the original paint appeared to be orange, I’m happy that I went with a dark green.
The sockets and socket handle were also really corroded, to the point where I’m not even sure of their sizes.
I thought that cleaning them up and giving them a rough polish would keep the set looking authentic.
Overall, I’m pleased with the end result.

English Made Record Leader 18" Wrench Renewal - 4K
Переглядів 6182 місяці тому
This is my renewal of a vintage Record Leader 18" wrench. I've been wanting to do one of these for a while. The 'Leader' style is very similar to a typical Ridgid wrench. Feels very heavy duty. Easy to disassemble and reassemble. If I get the opportunity to acquire more of these in different sizes, I may try and do a restoration set.
Vintage English Made Record No.102 Pipe Cutter Restoration - 4K
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 місяці тому
This is my restoration of an old English made Record No.102 pipe cutter. Although not made from many individual parts, this tool took a while to disassemble. The pins holding the cutting wheels were very tight. I realised after taking all three of them out that they needed replacing. I didn’t want to remove too much material on the head of the tool as I probably would’ve taken off the makers ma...
Three English Wrench Renewals. Shiny, Satin, and Original. Which do you prefer?
Переглядів 3976 місяців тому
This is my renewal of three old, English made, girder wrenches. I’ve made a previous video where I’ve restored one on its own, and the finish that time was polished. I thought it may be interesting to do three with different finishes to see how they turned out. These are simple tools, and I was lucky that the threads weren’t seized, and disassembly was straightforward. I have a favourite. Let m...
English Made Rededa No.32 Woodworking Vice Renewal - 4K
Переглядів 7627 місяців тому
This is my renewal of an old English made Rededa No.32 woodworking vice. It was a recent acquisition by one of my rusty retrievers. This vice is only made of a small number of parts, and these all disassembled easily. Looking online finds a little bit of information about the ‘Rededa’ company. It was based in Sheffield and manufactured items between 1920’s and 1960’s. I haven’t seen another one...
English Record 'G' Clamp Renewal - 4K
Переглядів 5018 місяців тому
This is my renewal of an old English made Record No.6 ‘G’ clamp. It was a recent acquisition by one of my rusty retrievers. I’ve not been able to find out the approximate manufacture date. I’m guessing it’s fairly old as the turn screw is a kind of butterfly shape. The newer ones seem to have bars through them. I’ve done a few of these in the past, and I now have a small collection. I thought I...
English Made Record No.930 Bolt Cutters Restoration - 4K
Переглядів 19 тис.10 місяців тому
This is my restoration of an English made Record No.930 set of bolt cutters. These were given to me to restore by a much loved family member who’s had these in their shed for at least 30 years. They’ve very kindly given me a number of tools, with associated stories, over the years, and it’s been my pleasure to have restored these bolt cutters. l was slightly concerned that I’d soften the jaws w...
English Made Samsonia No.37 Model J Vice Restoration - 4K
Переглядів 12 тис.Рік тому
This is my restoration of an old (English made) Parkinson’s Samsonia no. 37 model J vice. I’ve not been able to find much information referencing the approximate date. If anyone has any knowledge on these types of vices, or a way to work out the approximate date of manufacture, I’d love for you to share in the comments. Some of the screws holding in the jaws were seized. I had to drill them out...
British Waterways - Windlass Lock Key Renewal - 4K
Переглядів 995Рік тому
This is my renewal of an old British waterways canal windlass lock key. This is a very basic lock key. It could have even been homemade from steel rod and box section welded together. I removed the rust, tidied up the sharp edges, and fitted a rotating handle. This is not a restoration, but was for a friend who asked if I could tidy it up a bit with my sandblaster, I thought I’d make a quick vi...
English Made Record 92 Pipe Vice Restoration - 4K
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
This is my restoration of an early (English made) Record 92 pipe vice. I’ve not been able to find much information referencing the approximate date. I’m guessing it’s an early version of this type of vice as the handle is in a ‘T’ shape. Newer versions don’t appear to have this design. If anyone has any knowledge on these types of vices, I’d love for you to share in the comments. l’m very pleas...
Stanley Bailey Hand Plane Restoration - 4K
Переглядів 43 тис.Рік тому
This is my restoration of an English made, Stanley Bailey No.5 1/2 hand plane. Many thanks to those who are much more knowledgeable about these hand planes. They've dated it to between 20 and 40 years old. I'm privileged that I was asked by a friend to restore his fathers hand plane. This is the first one I've restored. I hope I’ve done it justice.
English Record 18" Pipe Wrench Restoration - 4K
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
This is my restoration of an old (made in England) Record 18” pipe wrench. All the pieces were present, and I only needed to find a new pivot pin for the head. Quite a few different processes were used in this restoration, and I was pretty pleased with the outcome. I understand that restoring something to a shiny finish isn’t for everyone. I wanted the result to work well, and look better (IMHO...
Vintage Pulley Restoration - 4K
Переглядів 7 тис.Рік тому
This is my restoration of a vintage pulley. It was obtained by my rusty retrievers from a car boot sale! The wheels were particularly corroded. Both took a long time, and a lot of sandpaper, to restore.
Vintage Blow Torch Restoration - 4K
Переглядів 9 тис.Рік тому
This is my restoration of an old British brass blow torch. I've re-published this video to include a correction in the pump rebuild, and to also show it working. All the pieces were present, and I only needed to make a replacement leather washer for the pressure pump. I decided to do a brushed brass finish. I have another similar blow torch that I may restore to a polished finish in the future....
Vintage Hand Drill Restoration - 4K
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
This is my restoration of an old shoulder brace hand drill. I couldn’t even turn it at the beginning as the gears were completely clogged up with years of dirt. It was missing a fixing screw for the handle assembly to connect to the body. This was a simple fix. The small handle near the drill end was also missing. To match the two handles, I replaced both with new ‘file handles’. They were modi...

Like new lol 👍
What a shame to destroy the original japanning and replace it with cheap black paint
Thanks for watching, and for the engagement.
Say hey to your friend from another friend of his. He'll know
Thanks for watching
Nice job at cleaning everything up. But without any coating on the wrench and sockets, they will rust again in very short time. BUT, you could Nickel coat/plate them using Electro Plating technique and they would shine forever...or near about... Thumbs Up!
Many thanks for watching, and for the comment. Totally agree with you. Nickel plating is something that I’ve looked at for a while now. I just need to give it a try. Hopefully you may see it in a future video.
🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱 👎🏻👎🏼👎🏽👎🏾👎🏿
Love the UA-cam name. Thank you for watching.
Record tools have never been painted red
Thanks for watching. I have 3 more of these to restore. Maybe I’ll do one of the others in blue ;-)
Muito boa reforma. Que pena que você antes de pintar não passou um primer. Ficaria perfeito. Tupiara/Brasil-Rj
Many thanks for watching, and for the comment. The paint I use (Hammerite) can be used directly onto metal.
Can we send you a tool for restoration?
You should have tested it.
Thank you for watching, and for the feedback
Excrllent surface finishes.
Thank you for the comment. I was rather happy with the results
Just got one of these off ebay , tis a thing of beauty !
Thanks for your comment. I totally agree, sometimes the old tools are the best!
Pretty neat mate. Subbed. 👌🏼
Many thanks for your support
I gave up at 4min. This music has ne connection to that lovely vice. Rubbish music. None required
Very sorry about the sound. I’ve not used any background music in my newer videos.
It's a lovely vice. I own one myself. Everything you showed was excellent. Glad to hear you dropped the inane muzak.
nice rubber gloves
Thanks for watching.
What amazing timing of your video. I just bought an old set of Wrenches from FB marketplace. Love the content. Keep it coming 💪🙏
Haha. Thank you for your support
Looking good
Thank you! Cheers!
“ Made in England “ ……those were the days !
Thanks for watching. It’s great to still have these tools, and for them to be really useful
Shame you missed out showing your treatment of the leather plunger, was watching specifically for that
Very sorry about that. I don’t think I treated it with anything. Maybe I should’ve?
Have you instructions? And equipment list please 🙏
Many thanks for your comment. Sorry, no written instructions. If you have a question, then please let me know and I’ll do my best to answer.
Satin and blue are very nice.
Thank you for watching, and for your comment. I’m rather fond of that blue.
Lovely job, that blue is a great colour too. 👍🏻
Many thanks for watching and supporting, and for the comments.
I like these restorations, and these old Record tools, robust and durable looking
Many thanks for watching. I enjoy restoring old Record tools. They always feel very well made.
I still have a pair of Gilbow Tin Shears that I bought in circa 1959 in the U.K. that I am about to refurb. they are still the original Blue. Also I still have a pair of Footprint Tin Shears bought about the same time that I have refurbished and repainted in original Yellow. Both are similar but have their individual differences....of the two my favourite by a very short head are the Footprints.....Both have given me heaps of pleasure as a Tradesman. Both are right handed cut..... Any competent Sheet metal worker will knows what I am talking about
Many thanks for watching, and for sharing your experiences with these type of tools. I’m very pleased to hear that they’ve given you years of service. I like to think that I’m doing my bit to help make these tools last even longer. As a shameless plug, I’ve also done a restoration video of an old footprint wrench. Many thanks again.
Bellissimo restauro Complimenti 🇮🇪
Thank you for your comment.
I took mine to "medium". Austin cars?
Ok. Thanks for watching, and for your comment
SATIN FTW
Many thanks for watching, and for your comment. Satin seems to be the favourite at the moment.
I think the satin
Thanks for your comment. Satin finish seems to be popular.
I can’t pick one, all three look great. That is such a cool type of wrench. Excellent work always enjoy your videos.
Thank you for your support, and for your comment.
Satin
Many thanks for watching, and for your comment. Satin finish seems to be popular.
They all look good to me.but I'd say satin if I was pushed to. 👍🏻
Thanks for your continued support, and for saying they all look good.
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
Great job, turned out great👍🏻
Thank you for your time, and for the positivity
I've been collecting tools and vices for many, many years and I've never seen that quick release action before !! Well, you live and learn !!! Nice job !!
Thanks for your comment. When I first picked it up I thought the mount for the handle was broken. I’ve never seen a vice with this type of quick release. Thanks for watching.
if I don't have a sandblast hood what is the best way to clean the iron body? Thanks, Greg
For the outside edges, I’d use sandpaper on a flat surface to keep the edges straight. To remove the metal coating, I believe that paint stripper should do the job. Thanks for watching.
Lovely job. Subbed
Thank you for watching, and for subscribing!
I just did mine and installed it. Similar vintage to yours but minus the tray under the central screw. It's fairly straight forward in terms of cleaning it up. Thanks for posting.
Great to hear that another one of these vices is getting some use. Many thanks for watching, and for your comment.
That's a lovely smooth transition at the end!
Thanks for watching. I’m very pleased to hear that you appreciated my smooth transition.
Cleaning them threads are a bugger good restoration all the best
Many thanks for watching, and yep, those threads were a pain to clean properly.
beautiful job, have had one sitting on the shelf for over ten years, you've given me the motivation to start work on it, thank you.
Hope you have a fun time restoring. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
Great for collection items
Thank you for watching, and your comment.
I thought this looked familiar. I have one sitting in my garage I’ve had for 40+ years. One day I plan to install it, I guess.
It’s a great bit of kit that I use all the time. Very useful. Thanks for watching
Very impressive! Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Did you test their functionality before dismantling? They may have just needed a lubrication and became fully functional. Aesthetics are a waste of time unless you want it in a museum. It’s a tool not art.
Thanks for watching, and for the engagement
That metallic blue is one of my favourite colours. But use the proper stove enamel blue blue for Record products.
Thanks for watching. I’ve a few other tools that I’ve done in the hammered blue now. Starting to get a bit of a collection.
I enjoy watching your videos I find it strangely satisfying
Thank you for watching. I’m very pleased to hear that my video has given you satisfaction.
I would never want to use it snd damage it.
Thank you for your comment. This restoration was done as a gift. I think it’s currently being used as a door stop :-). I’ve done another hammer video. I use that one all the time.
Maybe you are already aware of this, but you can buy a tin of Record blue online in the UK
Thank you for watching, and for your comment. I will have to look out for the ‘official record blue’. I do quite like the hammered blue finish though. It matches most of the other bits that I’ve restored. Thank you for letting me know
Beautiful!
Thank you for watching, and for your kind comment.
We still use these bolt croppers in the steelworks,Sheffield UK.
I’m genuinely very pleased to hear that. Thank you for your comment.
We used to ,an excellent tool until some bastard no mark swiped them along with a load of hand tools.
Very nice restoration, but you shloud grease everything for preserving it: the articulaitons, the threads, etc...
Thanks for watching. After being cleaned up, all the nuts and bolts were soaked in a light oil before reassembling. The unpainted surfaces were also given a very light coat of the same oil. I didn’t film any of those bits though. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
