Good vid! What is a "bucket" and where to get?
Bucket is the leather cups that form the piston on the wet end, see my other videos
Great video. I have an old Davies pump. Looking forward to the service kit arriving. Thanks.
Did you order it from me or from NZ?

Great video! Have you ever heard of a Trupar piston pump? I just bought one for $40 and looking to overhaul it. Where can I get the washers and other packing materials? Thank you!
You may have to make them, nothing comes up when I search them
Very well explained in detail. Thank you for your contribution.
Thanks for watching, hope your pump works well !!
This video was very helpful for me as I use a piston pump drawing water from a standpoint to supply water to my cottage and I learned a couple of very important points about how to prime the pump in the first place and, also, areas where the pump might be taking in air which impedes the efficiency of the pump. The comments in the video were clear, easy to understand and very helpful. Many thanks.
My pleasure, Happy pumping !!
Where did you get this done I’m also in Australia and would like to restore a machine

Is it wise to change pump gearing by altering the size of the pulley which can increase the rpm? Kindly mention pros and cons of doing so.
Going too fast will wear the pump out very quickly, the right speed you will get 50 years or more out of the pump, too fast and you will get a year or less- the cast iron eccentric is not made for speed. Going too fast does not leave enough time for the valves to shut so water bypasses them so it is inefficient . going too fast will greatly increase the effect of any air bubbles expanding much larger than usual ,causing inefficient pumping. The leather buckets do not stand up to such fast and high pressure extremes. They call these pumps century pumps cause they last 100 years- run too fast and you will have an annual pump
it was nicely built. do you have a diagram for the tapered jig? thanks
Loving your videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience ! I don't have the same pump (macewans No 1) 2 3/4" , but I've started my restoration journey and applying concepts from your videos has helped endlessly. Hopefully it'll go back together and work in the coming month.
Thanks for watching. Glad it helped

Do you know of a place I can by the springs for the valves?

What’s the cause and solution to one of the valves on top (discharge valve?) causing suction rather than discharging?
Hello, I want to repair my Myers manufactured in the USA, I am from Mexico and I am interested in buying the spare parts, is there a way for it to arrive in Mexico?
I have a similar pump bearing the brandname 'Dangar-G-Malloch' and it was used to pump discard milk from a dairy to say a piggery. I'm going to renovate it then use it to pump water so I may have to add a seal to that brass piston - maybe an o-ring. Not possible to use a bucket, either leather or polymer, because that would block the valve ports within the piston.
should pump water just fine as is gonna be jumpy hoses
cool
i got 3 pumps..using a 365 duro and have a 255 duro and sears homart 390 spares all ready to go

I thought about making one of these, but instead decided to use the approach used by Myford Boy in his UA-cam video for a power x-axis table feed. I used a Stepper motor and timing belt controlled by an Arduino. Still in the testing phase, (video on Instagram) but it looks like it will work well and I think my design has some advantages over the commercially available units. Also, I have see gas struts added to the knee to decrease the power needed to raise the knee, in a UA-cam video of a CNC conversion of a Bridgeport. Thanks for posting this video. Very useful information. Regards
i got a sears piston pump works great
i got a Duro piston pump..it pumps good with a water hose running in the suction end but when you hook it to my water line its as if it can handle the pressure and does not hardley want to turn..now it has a 1/6 hp motor and windings look like new inside..it had a real small pully on it so i put a 2 inch on and it does spin faster when i plugged it in,not hooked to water line so i never tried it after this....what do you think is going on?maybe motor too small?
Your videos are excellent! Thank you so much for doing them, there aren’t enough explanations such as these for such commonly used pumps. Cheers!
Thanks mate, Glad to help!
Will this fit Myers pump. I'm trying to find out, & purchase. Thank you.
yes
@shedasaurus Please send me a link to buy parts. I also need some gaskets, cups, and cast iron covers. Thank you

Hi, thanks for the video, very helpful!! My question is, if the inside of the pump is really rusty, is that ok? Do you try to clean that somehow? Thanks!
Try break the big chunks out but be careful , some people will sandblast the insides as it removes most of the gunk. Letting it dry out for a few months causes most of the rust to fall off
@@shedasaurus thanks!! would having some rust leftover affect the quality of the water after it is pumped?
@@JFS-c7g I have found it stabilises after a while, depends on how acid or salty your water is, cast iron generally only surface rusts then settles down as the rust layer pacifies
@@shedasaurus Thanks again for your help! I have another question if that's ok? I just finished refurbishing the old pump, and your video really helped!! I painted it too, looks new! I went to test it today, and it won't self prime (I thought piston pumps did self prime??) When I prime it in the water chamber with water, it'll pump, but once it sucks up air, I have to re-prime it since it won't pump on it's own again.... any thoughts? Thanks!
@@JFS-c7g If the gland is dripping water when the pump is NOT running tighten the gland. They are self priming but need water in to start the prime. Make sure there is no rust chips stuck under the lower Valve rubbers as it will empty the water out of the pump. Put a check valve at the end of the suction pipe to stop the vacuum effect
cool
Hello I have one and I'm trying to find a solution on how to run one of these, would a solar powered 0.5 hp motor run one with no trouble?
Would need to be 1440 rpm and continuous duty not that cheap rubbish off ebay. Probably better with a 1/2 hp AC with an inverter as they are heaps cheap and plentiful and can run for days without letting the smoke out. Small power loss from inverter
@@shedasaurus Also, what is the lift and height or head can it pump?
@@Nes61424 I have had them lifting from 7 meters with a check valve at the bottom of the line but that is a big lift for it and they are rated to 76 meters head , if you change the cylinder liner to 1-1/4" they will pump 121 meters head
Thank you for posting now I know how to rebuild my two cylinder Fairbanks-Morse water pump.
Pleasure , the theory is pretty much the same for the piston pumps no matter what the design
Hi, I am restoring a Powamac pump, can you let me know were I could obtain parts.

The fourth tool is a wheel spanner used to open and close valve hand wheels onboard marine vessels. They were very common on Royal Navy vessel and I surmise the Australian Navy would adopt them.
Thanks that is interesting, I will see if I can look it up
@@shedasaurus I'm looking at it again and I have sound! The arrow is a stamp which the MOD required to be stamped on just about every item that was sourced for it. RN, Army and Air Force equipment have it stamped on. The number following it will be the date it was manufactured and I surmise the following numbers are the item stock number. The arrow was also colloquially known as a 'pusser's arrow' as the pusser was a term for the Navy organisation sourcing equipment and literally everything was stamped with it! Hope this of help.
From a google search the last tool seems to be a bicycle spoke wrench?
@@shedasaurus Search also throws up the term Valve Wheel Key.
@@grahameanderson6913 You are better than me , will google it again !!. I also found the scissors I asked about are for trimming Bonzai
At what depth would these pumps pull from?
If you have a check valve on the bottom then up to about 8m, If you are priming without the pipe being pre-charged , I would guess 6 but the pump would have to be in good nick internally
Just found this content and really appreciate it as I’m getting ready to do a resto on an old American made model. I really appreciate you making these videos. It gives me a much better idea of what I’m going to need to look at.

@@shedasaurusquestion. Am I better off machining my self a new piston rod(talking the bit with the cups) or is there a source for them? Mine is quite beat up and I’d rather replace it. I guess I just worry about the use of standard carbon steel. Could use brass?
@@userx702 We use brass or 316 stainless
Thanks for the very comprehensive description of the overhaul procedure. You answered all my question in advance!!
Pleasure ! I learnt from the old blokes who have now all passed on.
My pump is pumping OK but, there is lots of hammering on inlet pipe which shakes quite a lot. Any suggestions?
Jacking is common, check my videos on pipes shaking on this channel
video too fast. Should say what size socket etc but have to watch several times but ok
These pumps being made for over 100 years in different places , countries, have numerous size bolt heads depending on where the company bought the bolts from or what they specified and wether the bolt is metric or imperial. The cylinder endcap/cover bolts for instance will often be different size heads on the bolts, of the same size thread, on the same part. About 40% of pumps have this anomaly . The video was made when it took 6 hours to upload a 15 min video on my computer to youtube so information was condensed. Thanks for watching
I just got two Ajax pumps the same as this and a southern cross pump for $40 at local market..
Bargain!!
I want to run my Deming pump with a Dankoff DC motor that came with a solar pump. Unfortunately the motor runs the opposite direction from what you recommend here and also from the arrow on my pump. The motor will run backwards, but I'm not sure whether that it would last. I could turn it around, but then I lose the use of the nice built-in platform and tensioner.
You would have to check with an electrician, from what I have been told it can go either way
Thanks for your videos on these great old pumps. I'm rebuilding a Deming pump. I can get 6 gpm with no back pressure and about 3 gpm at 60 psi. But the gaskets that I have been making out of gasket material and permatex are not holding the pressure. What do you use for gaskets?
Insertion rubber

what are your thoughts on grease in the gearbox instead of oil?
It is a splash oiling system, a definite no
Hey Shedasaurus! Friggen awesome video - this is the ONLY place on the web that shows what you do. Question for you - I put new gaskets on the body, but it's still leaking. I think it may be due to the pitting on the body. Can I put silicon on either side of the gasket and tighten it up? Need to stop the drips..
Silicone will lubricate the gasket and make it slippery, as soon as you tighten the bolt it will push the gasket out. I would suggest getting some STAG jointing paste , it will fill holes and dry in them. Be sure to mess some on your clothes so fellow stag users give you a nod in public for the next few years, it never washes out. Where is it leaking from? The head gasket?
