The best mid sized adventure motorcycle? Suzuki VStrom 800DE
The best mid sized adventure motorcycle? Suzuki VStrom 800DE we really are spoilt for choice when it comes to Adventure bikes. I would class this as being on the big end of the mid sized bikes. Not quite big enough to be classed as one of the big boys. I have owned a 1050 VSTROM so I remember how that was. How does this compare? Join me for a look around and then a test ride. An 800 is a big mid sized bike lol, and I would think the weight distribution and center of gravity is lower on this than your 1050 making it more manageable
where may I found ECU RKF 125 (2021 model there isn't under the seat)
Royal alloy just looks more retro imho
It does. It looks like the bikes of the past.
@GillyBikes Unfortunately, they dont sell the two colours in Thailand. I might buy a cream and sticker red or blue.
This is a fantastic bargain…quite incredible
It really is 😍
Just subbed!
Ever so easy to manuver
Amazing little things.
It's a completely different bike to the 1050, the 1050 v strom is a "v"twin whereas the 800 is a parallel twin with a 270 degree crank. You forgot to mention that the 800de has fully adjustable suspension for damping and pre load front and rear . I changed my 1050 for the 800de and have no regrets
What version of 1050 did you have? How do you find the touring capability of the 800DE to the 1050? Is it a big difference?
I would have no regrets either. It’s a better bike 👍
@ionescugeorge2003 I had the standard 1050. It was great for touring apart from the seat. After a days riding I was in pain. The last tour I took it on had me riding all day for 5 days straight. I was in agony by the time I got home. The 800de seems to have no issues with power. Feels lighter and the seat was a much needed improvement
@@GillyBikesagreed, the seat on the 800 is a revelation, very comfy ....
looking at getting one of these bikes! need to get my CBT done first though. been soaking up all v cruise media since my decision. would love to see a follow up video of a well run in bike and if any issues had occurred!
I will try my best to get one out 👍
My 125 does 89mph
2stroke?
@@GillyBikes electric lol

@@GillyBikes nobody said i couldnt 🤷🏾♂️🤣
I would buy this bike,if it wasnt so ugly
Just like every other adventure bike. They are made to go anywhere. I think looks are at the bottom of the priority list for this genre. Sad really.
The euro 4 xmax scooter uses the same barrel and head as the early mt 125, and can sit all day at 70mph 2 up on the motorway,
Funnily enough I took one of those out a few days ago. It didn’t feel as fast as this, but it was unbelievably comfortable.
I had a look over one and test ride, they appear to be extremely well made and very smooth quality ride, definitely the best Chinese bike I’ve seen,
Definitely upped their game with this bike 👍
I'm hopefully collecting mine this Saturday and I am even more happy about the ADX having seen your test ride, did you know you can even change the colour and style of the display in front of you 😊
Congrats on the new bike. I only had a quick play with the screen. Thats a nice touch though being able to change the display.
They skimped on cruise control. Big mistake.
Yes that’s a shame. I’ve got used to using it on my tours. Definitely something I will look at when I buy my next bike.
I have to laugh these days when they class an 800 as a mid sized bike . When I started riding a mid sized bike was 350 to 550 cc & anything over 650 was a super bike . I have always liked Suzukis & Hondas ,mainly because I have never had an issues with them used or brand new . I like the way Suzuki utilise their parts bin, across their range , & usually good discounts lower than the initial list price can usually be had ,once the model has been around a while . If I was looking for a new adventure style bike in the 800 ish size the DE would probably be top of my short list . 👍
It’s very much on the high side of mid sized. 😂. Still a very capable bike that will keep up with the bigger bikes. It goes like stink.
@@GillyBikes To be honest my 200O Y model Bandit reg in 2001 , which I flogged to downside further was more than adequate for real life everyday riding . It had 79 hp & a top speed of around 130 mph ,would cruise all day at 80 to 90 odd mph , loads of mid range stonk . You couldn’t even use all that power on normal roads ,without some homicidal motorist pulling out on you ,or loosing your licence . So 800cc should be more than enough to tour Europe even two up ,on that Suzi DE 800 twin. 👍
Completely agree. There is an obsession with everyone wanting ridiculously large engines bikes with over 100 horsepower and you just don’t need it. These bikes will do everything you need and more.
@@GillyBikes When my sister passed her bike test , she went straight out & bought a 1200 . I asked her why , & she said oh you have got to get the biggest engine you can afford ,if you pass your test . This is the mentality fostered these days ,by the motorcycle media . I reckon riders are to want to eventually ride the large powerful bikes , they will get better & more experience by gradually working their way up from small to medium & then large cc bikes . I don’t see the point of 100 hp on roads with 20 - 70 mph speed limits & a plethora of so called safety cameras . 👍
It’s only when you get wiser and realise you don’t need it. If I realised sooner I would have saved a fortune 😳
Another Gilly review, another drizzly day .. when will the weather improve? :( .. nice review though, bike looks good :)
Cheers. The weather is strange. We should have started summer by now but it’s still cold and miserable. Hopefully start to see some blue sky in the next few weeks. The bike was awesome. Really impressed with it.
Nice review mate, would you say the DE or RE would be a suitable first big bike? Imt 6 ft tall and I think seat height wouldn't be an issue, opinion would be appreciated.
Both good options and at your height they will fit you nicely. If you’re planning on the occasional dirt road then I would go for the DE. I think the DE is slightly taller but only by a centimetre or so. Not really noticeable.
How about the RE version ?. The quoted seat height is 825mm
Yes I believe so. Just a little bit shorter than this one.
I think it looks much better than the 1050 version you had. I don’t know how they get bright yellow to work with that grey colour but I really like it.
I agree. The light set up is better. And the colour scheme does work. I like it. On paper the grey and yellow shouldn’t work but it really does 👍
Not really a fan of the looks, but its such a great bike to ride, that id buy one in a heartbeat
Classic adventure bike styling. Not the best looking but definitely one of the best for riding.
You can, but both you and the bike will suffer :) I've ridden Yamaha yzf 125, its actually decent when u keep the speed at 90-100 km/h but its tiresome.
Yes I agree. Not great for a bike to be thrashed to the max for a long period of time but they are capable for a couple of miles.
looks like you had fun on that one and what are you doing out anyway as it isn't raining
Yes, I waited and waited and the rain didn’t come so I went on a dry ride instead 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
The R A looks more like a Lambretta than the Lambretta
It really does. I think it’s the best looking bike out of the both of them.
I'd like to see what it will look like in 10 years time with 60k miles done.
Me too. Only time will tell how it holds up. All I can say is new they look good / well made.
Superlight any good
They are good for what they are. Which is a very cheap way into biking. They look much bigger than a 125 as well I’ve done a review on one, all be it, it was in the early days of me doing these reviews ua-cam.com/video/nc6BKY_wA-I/v-deo.htmlsi=cd10__AS-u7yw3U4
Debating to get this as my second bike or the cbr650r. I just hate the look of the front of the gsx 8
Try to test ride both and see which one fits you better. I didn’t like the front of it when I first seen it but after spending time with it I changed.
Nice review.. between this bike and Suzuki gsx 8s which one would you personally pick? And why
Both similar ride / performance. This one just looks like an out and out sports bike. It’s only when you sit on it and ride it you realise it’s much more comfortable than a regular sports bike so for that reason I pick the 8R
Is it the tri spark engine thsts in the keeway rkf ? Cos the exterior looks exactly the same . And i read or saw somewhere that the rkf was benneli engine .
That wouldn’t surprise me as Keeway own Benelli.
@@GillyBikes really . I did not know that. Interesting 🤔
@churcher8334 yes, keeway upping their game 😎
125cc bikes make you statistically more likely to get into accident due to not having enough power. In Northern Ireland even on B roads 60mph is the legal limit, I still had cars tailgaiting me even when I was pinning my 125 at 60. Car drivers will always be idiots.
For that reason 50cc bikes scare me.
Great bike but the handlebars make it look like something my name would ride. Be much better with proper clipons.
Hi, I want to ask. Is that good idea to buy Suzuki GSX-R if my height 190
Buying a GSXR is always a good idea 👍 great bikes. If you sit on one and feel comfortable then do it. I’ve seen lots of giants on them. 👍
me buying a motorcycle today and learning newer ones have ABS???
I know you wouldn't care but I did buy the motorcycle. It being a 1998 marauder, it's amazing. So smooth and basically everything in the video seems pretty spot on
@Seven4SevenRep I definitely do care. That’s awesome. Congrats on the new bike. Ride safe 👍
@@GillyBikes will do man thanks for the informative video it def helped me decide
@Seven4SevenRep no probs. Glad I helped 👍
Like the review - genuine and real. I'm turning 57 this year and enjoy motorcycling. I have a 2018 Vstrom 650 and a Ninja 650. Would you part w/one to get the GSX 8R? I ride locally on roads + the occasional 1/2 day+ rides on combo of rds/highways. Ninja is a fun bike, the Vstrom is that trusty long tourer, and I can' t have 3 bikes. Appreciate your thoughts.
Very difficult decision. Only because I’ve recently been on the vstrom 800DE as well. (Review will be on in a few days) both using the same 800 engine. If you think of this one as a comfortable sports bike. I could ride this for long periods. But I really did enjoy the 800DE as well. So if I had to replace one I would probably change the vstrom 650 for the 800 and keep the ninja as a play thing. The best thing to do is go and try both if you can. It will certainly make your decision harder because they are both amazing.
@@GillyBikes Thank you for the feedback! If I read you correctly - I could replace my Vstrom 650 with the 8R, and enjoy longer legs that I'd typically save for the Vstrom?

I love these. Really nice in the blue. You should buy one. 😁
The blue is definitely my favourite ❤️
I have to say I got mine at the beginning of December 2023 just had it in for its 9.500 mile service been as far as North Africa with no issues what so ever. I’m going next week on another trip to North Africa iv no problem putting my faith on this bike just dose everything and has everything I need in a bike. if it had a higher price I would’ve paid it…
That’s great to hear. Still very new to the UK and lots of people nervous about buying so it’s good to hear about how good they are. Thank you for sharing 👍
Great bike, but I'd rather have the 200cc version.
I’ve not tried the 200 version but if it looks and rides like this but has a little bit more power then yes I would too 👍
My 411 will happily sit at 70 mph and still not full throttle so Will my friends so dont know how you come up with it will only do 60- 65 mph. I also run a bike that is capable of speeds well well over twice the national speed limit. Is it better because its faster it also has Olin's shocks and fork's is it better no its just different Same as the new Sherpa i don't call it the Himalayan because they are totally different. How can you even start to compare air cooled to water cooled ive test ridden the Sherpa it was ok but i didn't like the dash or the looks and i think the Himalayan is better at lower more technical speeds the Sherpa did feel top heavy but as you said it's got showa forks and TFT dash and can also travel at illegal speeds over the national speed limit much more easily then the Himalayan so is a better bike. I definitely know which one i would like to have the misfortune to repair. Why do you guys keep on about its performance its fine its what it was made for The new shepa is a different bike . Royal Enfield is very good at marketing so they would use the old name but a Himalayan its not
Unfortunately Royal Enfield have called it the Himalayan so on that basis it was always going to be compared to the previous Himalayan. I get what you’re saying about the performance but having ridden both the 411 and the 450 I stand by my initial impression which is the 450 is a better road bike. Unfortunately I didn’t get to ride it off road but I would bet the 411 is better at that due to the weight. I think both bikes have a place as they are both good at different things. I really hope RE continue to make both.
Thanks for replying. Unfortunately RE are or have at least in Europe discontinued the 411 Himalayan. I live in Spain and the new 450 wouldn't really be any better as the roads around here are only small and very tight but fantastic because you can keep up with sports bikes mostly. But I stand by what I said about them being completely different but that's a good thing it's just sad that there's very few air cooled low tech bikes being manufactured. I think you should probably compare it to some of the other 400-500cc bikes Adventure/Trail bikes on the market
I will definitely do a comparison at some point. In the UK the RE importer was MotoGB. They in their wisdom brought lots of 411’s over and then ended their agreement with RE so they have lots of brand new ones that they are selling them with Hugh discounts. Hopefully they have enough for the next year or so.
I'm looking forward to your comparison on other adventure bikes. It's very Difficult to buy the latest upgraded 411 in Spain in my area I can't speak for other areas. Ive been offered more then I payed for it and it's over a year old it was actually manufactured late 22 but not registered till 23 I wonder if other countries has this demand.
There isn’t that much difference in weight. How does it feel heavy??
Just feels top heavy. It was strange. Before I took this out I went on the 800 Vstrom which is something like 40kg heavier than this. But riding it felt lighter. Getting it off the stand it felt lighter. But of a shock really Because having looked at the specs before hand I expected it to feel really light especially after just getting add of the vstrom.
i,m loving the look of these bikes , i,m going 3 numbers on the irish lotto with £20 on and i,m coming after one of these soon as my number hit home
Nice. I’m all out for the euros tomorrow. If I win 134 million I might buy you one 🤞

Harley's are old hat these days every one has got one
Not everyone. I’m Harley’less at the moment I will get another at some point though.
Why don't they add a exhaust speaker to these. So u could change at will in ap. And in crowed riding people in cars would hear u. Hearing u saves lives. I patented a system back in 2018 yo do this.. in mercia. And couldn't get any companies to bite. And it would be about 100 add on to bikes
These are much louder than you think. The best sounding electric bike I’ve tried. Sounds like a jet taking off.
Just can't see this being practical. I bet everyone with 1 of these gets sik and tired of not having a charge. Probably stressing also. If it could really get 150 miles on a charge.. then maybe... and also need better tech for faster charging. It's a beautiful bike.. maybe at 10k I'd put up with all the crap. But 23k and after u leave the Harley shop it's 25k maybe 26k
If you ride for 80 miles and have money to burn then they are great. Home charging over night wouldn’t be an issue for me. The issue will always be long journeys and charging away from the home. That’s when these don’t make sense
I'm a new rider could you maybe do a video in when and how to change gears
I might do a quick short covering it.
