    I just don't really care about this kind of stuff because it is flavor of the month. Not going to chase my tail because that's what people are doing on twitter. I do appreciate the video though. Your stuff has been getting killed by the YT algro for whatever reason. Your mapping video was the first recommended one to me since the demihuman video. I've always kept time records as the GM/DM/Referee, it is instinctual, up there with naming NPCs or creating maps. Just simply something I have to do. Perhaps it is due to all of the traveller I've played. If there was a, as someone said here, a "DnD softball league" then I would probably do 1 to 1 or something like it. In the development of what was supposed to be Fallout 3 but ended up getting canceled, Fallout Van Buren, they had two competing parties out there influencing the world. One has to do something with a clock then. In a single group I do not see the point.

    I have a weird question that maybe you could answer in a video. I'm aware you do very little prep in your game and rely on your understanding of myth and pulp fantasy to flavor any improvisation you do in play. So with that in mind my question is, how important is understanding traditional story structure, pacing, and character immersion for your high improvisation style?

    I think there's a difference between a "Tolkienesque" game and a "Middle Earth" game. You can run a "Middle Earth" game with D&D no problem. That was the point of MERP: you were meant to run a standard FRP game with wizards and fighters looting treasure from a ruin. D&D is really unsuitable for a "Tolkienesque" game as TBE points out... Tolkien is doing mythology and even theology, and he is presenting iconic characters with epic virtues and flaws. From that standpoint, as Viktor suggests, the Hobbit is not really "Tolkienesque". Even more so if you look at the 1st edition facsimile version of the Hobbit, which presents a fairy tale world where the civilized lands are ruled by a king, the troll lands are a place where "policemen" never venture, Gollum is an honorable little fellow, gunpowder-obsessed goblins make alliances with evil dwarves, etc.

    • @InhabitantOfOddworld
      @InhabitantOfOddworld День тому

      Yeah, The Hobbit was simply a children's story. It was a seperate thing from the mythology Tolkien had already made, now known as The Silmarillion. When Tolkien's publisher asked for a Hobbit sequel, Tolkien tried to think of a Bilbo sequel and came up with nothing worth writing. He tried to pitch The Silmarillion, and the publisher didn't want it. LoTR came about when Tolkien reconciled the two works. Suddenly, The Hobbit was part of Middle-Earth, and Trolls, Dragons, and Magic Rings became part of the elves and Maiar mythology. That's why the 2nd Edition Hobbit changes became necessary, for Tolkien to retcon Gollum's behaviour toward a simple magic ring that was now, suddenly, Sauron's tool of evil.

    I backed Durin through the doors of Moria and there is an entire fairly meaty chapter for solo play. You can use strider mode but a lot of the new rules focus on you being apart of Durins Dwarven band and managing them. There are great new referee tools as well such as a dungeon chamber generator and and orc band generator.

An update on that game: It just started and I wrote out a Prologue with Obsidian that goes through the initial journey between the Hero's home and their encounter with their first Patron. Very enjoyable so far and people are loving making the choices with the Polls as I mentioned. The Moria book has an extensive Solo mode in it where you go with Balin on the doomed expedition. You have your Hero but you build a band and explore the ruins of Moria, clearing it of Orcs and Goblins. You are ultimately doomed, but that won't stop you from killing as many as you can before the end

    Roadside Picnic! Amazing book, has that same vibe, gritty and fantastic adventures, like Dying Earth or Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. It has a little more content about having a family in a weird, essentially magical place, where everyone's out to make a buck and you can die for no good reason at all, or mutate, just for being near the artifacts. I just realized that the artifacts in Numenera are very much like the Roadside Picnic ones. It's a brilliant RPG idea. Weird magic items that are from a forgotten time or an incomprehensible civilization, and having them do unpredictable things, some of which are just strange and not useful. Like what a great World building tool! You can totally create the mood of a setting by determining how a random artifact acts. Players discover a faucet but it's unattached. What happens when you turn it? That's how you set the tone. When you turn it does it make you sweat and when you turn it off you stop? Does turning it on release a strange fluid from nowhere? Does looking through the fluid, make things look Technicolor, Or does drinking it turn you into a gnome? Does turning it cause screams of the damned to come out? Does attaching it to a water barrel cause it to pour out wine when you turn it, or can you just attach it to any surface and when you turn it different things come out every time? Etc

    TL:DR TL:DR Some people didn't learn mental flexibility that makes them bad at thinking, creating, and discussing, but trying to play RPG's well helps. TL:DR There are people who did not figure out in school how to learn new things and apply them in new circumstances, nor see things from different perspectives, nor how to get along with people they don't like. This makes them bad at creative thinking, and bad at interacting with people-especially those they disagree with. Role-Playing games are built around these competencies, so you can use them to get better at those things or you can just be a pain to everyone else who's having fun. Actual post: I'm listening to this replay slowly over several days, and tonight I began thinking about creativity and perspective. One way to think of creativity is the ability to shift perspective and ask what if? Human beings' mental superpower is pattern recognition. We see patterns. We learn patterns. The ability to think in a new pattern is what keeps humans as a whole alive and in charge of the planet. Education is a fight between the power that pays for it and wants certain limits imposed, and the purpose of education: 1. learn information we build our world on. 2. consider and compare and recombine information for yourself. 3. how to work together with most people and how to put up with people you don't like and can't get rid of. Anyway, if any of that works, you understand how to learn new things, and to realize that you don't know everything. Once you know how to consider things differently, creativity is just picking a different way to look at the world, and then, using the patterns you learned, figure out how to express your new perspective. The most frustrating thing in dealing with people is often the fact that they are unskilled at looking at things differently. They don't practice thinking new thoughts or looking at old thoughts differently. Y'all were talking a lot about reading and this is it. Many books are great not because they are easy to read but because the thoughts they make you think make you better at thinking and make you better at looking at life. Empathy is taking another person's brain, trying it on, and finding out how things work differently. That's the actual Joy of role play. That's in the heart of the hobby. My character doesn't care about the exact same things that I do and that's a wonderful break from my life. Role-Playing games don't automatically change you, but they can in the same way that a good education can. You learn the patterns and apply them to a world; you consider, compare, and recombine the game system and the setting to create something you want. You learn to get along with the other players and the GM and you learn how your character can get along with the other characters in the game. You learn how to deal with people you don't like and how to put up with people that annoy you, but you get the actual catharsis of destroying or getting revenge on in-game characters that are villains or a pain in your side. You have to learn how to ask "what if?" and give an answer, to really enjoy an RPG. The people who are bad at answering the question, "What if?" are the ones you have the most frustration with online. That's why they seem dumb, it's like they didn't actually learn anything from school and I mean that fundamentally not informationally. I imagine it's more difficult for professional creatives to deal with someone who seems to lack that capability, as you make a living, or an income, answering that question in interesting ways. Anyway, what I personally hope people get out of rpgs, is confidence in trying new things, practice thinking new thoughts, and a happy or more chill response to challenges and the unexpected. You know, fun!

    Orthodoxy is a beautiful tradition. I hope you continue that. Also, with respect, AeresChronicles doesn't have a blessed idea what he's talking about. In Judeo Christian scripture, God declares the creation to be good. He sounds like he's trying to assert the position that all pagan cults are essentially druidic nature worshippers and it's the Christians who don't want you going back to nature because it's anathema. Especially with you studying Orthodoxy, you know he's using the word "anathema"incorrectly. The church never pronounced an anathema on creation. it couldn't. So yeah, great stuff except for what he said. That was some garbage word salad.

    At some point between the writing of the Torah and the New Testament, a practice arose of throwing the scapegoat (which had the sin of Israel placed on it) off a cliff instead of setting it free in a forest. That's a lot of sin to keep dumping in the same place over and over. In a fantasy setting that sort of thing could have some pretty catastrophic consequences... I disagree with it being phrased "when the market is dominated by the casuals" over "when the casuals are dominated by the market". Yep, can't do anything really about consumerism... but for me it isn't so much a conversation about whether or not Capitalism is viable because Capitalism is just economics (and falling into the language of economics being the only alternative to constant self-destructive revolution in the name of Marxism). It's a want of culture for culture's sake and seeing beyond the marketing and packaging, and a want of "act locally think locally"... the specifics of gaming groups informed by (benevolent and small) structures in industries and chosen, steered, by the gaming groups. Inspire the root causes of awesome and encourage and enable the frolicking within. Like TBE and community have done.

      I'm not finished with my coffee yet so it took a second to grasp what you are saying. Yeah I have no problem with casuals. We have to start somewhere and at a certain level of interest. I have sort of accepted that this is just the cycle of things. The hobby gets really popular, then there is a bust, and things shrink back again. And then in a decade or so, it gets popular again. We just have to be prepared for it and for cultivating casuals into gamers at our tables too. That will inoculated them.

    I agree that the internet makes stuff very accessible, but I disagree with BLG's mockery of game stores. Game stores are still the best way to find in-person TTRPG groups. Meet-Up & Facebook & such can work, but a game store with a busy Discord or way to post LFP/LFG in-store plus tables available for use is the only way many TTRPGers can find each other. Some of us support a FLGS because the FLGS provides a place to play and a way to find players.

    This is excellent and I can't wait to watch the whole series. One approach I wanted to share as far as roleplaying goes is to take the roll of the story teller weaving a massive tale, like Homerian and epic. Another lens I like to play solo through is that of an investigator. Usually as a journalist or investigator writing up their research reports. Like a long form kind of thing- hell you can do it as a Hunter S Thompson sort of gonzo journalist as well. My point is that you can do whatever is fun. It's your game. Hell you could play from the position of a deity judging a dead person and recounting scenes from their life with them. There's tons of ways you can go with this.
