Duramax Build Part 14: Putting the Cab Back onto the Frame
In this video, I give you guys a quick status update on the progress I've made in the last couple of months. I am still in the middle of what feels like an eternity of bodywork! At least I have the cab painted in all the right spots and it is finally ready to be installed back onto the frame.

    What size (diameter) are the tires you are running? Any rubbing at full lock? I just installed the adjustable Icon front suspension and looking at some AT4 takeoffs on Marketplace. Would love to know what size tires will fit to max comfort/ride. THANKS in advance!!

    Anyone who has installed these, if you can provide a little help I installed these and it did fine until wheel alignment then a squeaking noise developed and fox said to remove bar pin and regrease with lithium, did it but found that the teeth on bar pin are flattened and now the lower mount bolts down align with lower control arm and literally have to pull it into place with excessive force and squeaky noise still exist and fox is no help

    I have a 9hp gas powered, 30lb tank. It has a 1" npt outlet on compressor to tank. I'm concerned about the pressure if I was to go direct to rad first. That's 1" not 1/2" or 3/4" like everyone else's compressor seems to be.

    You have an interesting video. As for doing things scientifically though, when measuring temperatures with an IR thermometer, a person needs to take into account the emissivity of the surface they are measuring. Shiny light colored surfaces emit less IR than dark surfaces that are not shiny.

    I followed your whole video, a few pieces were different in my 94 F-body T56 but still same order of parts. After putting the main case back on I couldn't get the 4/5 guide bolt to line up, I had to pull the case back off and make sure that the 4/5 slot was 12.5" up off the midplate surface, otherwise the pin wouldn't go in. Plus since I didn't have a "spare" 5/6 gearset to drive the speedo gear back on, I just used 1.25" metal tubing with plastic end caps from Home Depot, then a board+hammer on top like you did. My OPS is a Viper so 1.29" diameter versus the "standard" 1.175".

    You guys are spending way too much money for those parts. Never buy a strut assembly as the springs are different and that can effect your ride and height of the vehicle. 22" wheel and tire assemblies are not that hard to balance if someone is using a good balancer and knows what they are doing. Also not installing the factory magneride will lower your resale value for the vehicle.

    • @zanetaylor7
      @zanetaylor7 7 днів тому

      Or increase its value to another owner like me, who goes off-road. 2015 and 2016 were apparently so bad they have a TSB for it. I’m in the market right now and one of the Denali’s I’m looking at has this fox strut on it. And I’d prefer it.

    • @zanetaylor7
      @zanetaylor7 7 днів тому

      Oh and id probably agree with the difference in springs as well. Word to the wise, don’t police someone’s taste. It’s okay if someone does something different? Like I’d prefer the different spring. And in the case of the Lexus LX, when you switch out the hydraulic system for standard struts and shocks, you need different springs to account for loss of pressure coming hydraulically. There may (or may not) be a reason they use different springs. But you’re usually correct when it comes to more standard strut replacements, and should generally keep the spring rather than toss on some random aftermarket piece. But it’s fox. They’re probably fine and the way they are for a reason.

    I got a 85 c20 suburban with a 6.2 detroit with the heavy duty suspension so what I found out it basically is using c30 upper control arms but I can't seem to find any that actually have the heavy duty ball joint, I've struck out twice on ordering uppers for this thing and they all seem to have c10 balljoints on them. Do you know of any brands/part numbers that actually have the HD balljoints?

      Thanks! The compressor wheel is pre-balanced. I’m pretty sure a new roll pin came with the kit (not 100% sure on that) and the oil lines use copper banjo bolt crush seals.

    Just a quick suggestion for next time. When you lower it back on the ground, start it up and turn the wheel lock to lock to scrub them down (maybe even roll it back and forth a few feet) before you measure the height. It will take the pressure off the sidewalls and bring it down to actuall ride height. I have installed hundreds of leveling/lift kits on these (including this set up)

    You litterally said the stock setup isn't that bad until you run the conpressor for a long time. You then only tested the compressor getting up to operating pressure. How well does it work when you are running something and the heat exchanger gets heat soaked? 🤔 I think this test is a fail after 10 minutes of running at full psi.

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage 2 місяці тому

      The fan runs when the compressor is running and when the compressor isn’t running, there is no heat input into the heat exchanger so it will never become heat soaked. 10 mins is plenty of time for the system to reach thermal equilibrium. Watch the follow up video, I run it continuously for an hour and it still puts out cool dry air.

    I have trouble with the 5/6 gear too every time. Heating it up really did the trick for me each time. Also, I use a long hose clamp and clamp the jaws together on the puller so they can’t slip off gear. There’s a little lip on the inside that you need the puller to grab instead of the teeth so the teeth don’t break.

    • @richphippsgarage

  •  3 місяці тому

    Makes me wonder; if you double up, could you further the efficiency or has your setup hit a pointe of diminishing returns? Perhaps mounting the heat exchanger horizontal will allow more of the heat to naturally lift off the system to eek just that much more efficiency out of it?

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage 3 місяці тому

      A second or larger heat exchanger would help some but as the difference in temp goes down, the rate of heat transfer drops significantly. I don’t think it would be worth the cost/effort for the additional 5-10 degrees. Mounting horizontally would increase airflow for sure (should’ve done that lol)

    •  3 місяці тому

      @@richphippsgarage fascinating stuff! Now you've got me wondering how effective an air-to-water setup would be. For my last PC build I used an actual small radiator (serpentine, like the oil radiator you used) and due to the overkill size, I could 'respectfully' OC without the need of a fan. It was nuts lol but I was able to bring down my temps another 8°c when I put it horizontal. My uncle is gifting his old 60gal to me so I'll absolutely be giving this a try!

    I am having problem with my t56 reverse. It grind when it cold and hard shift after warm up. I already change, reverse gear, blocker ring, flip reverse synchro mesh, and new clutch kits. What else could be wrong? Every other gear work except reverse. I have shut vehicle everytime going reverse.

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage 3 місяці тому

      Hmm the only thing you didn’t mention was the reverse gear shift fork pads. If those are missing or severely worn, you won’t be able to fully engage the gear. Assuming you put everything back together correctly I’m not sure.

    • @kennedywong9854
      @kennedywong9854 3 місяці тому

      @richphippsgarage I already change reverse shift fork and pads. When I took tail housing out, I saw one of billet key missing ring on reverse synchro mesh, but I don't know if that causing it to reverse. Seem like someone did some work on it before me, but trying figure out why difficult to reverse. Sure clutch not dragging.

    I got the exact same numbers on my 3.5hp 120v compressor. Basically 300 degrees going in and 90 coming out. I have a similar size trans cooler and used 8” 120v fan. People think a water seperator will do the work after but if your tank air is 300 degrees you can’t remove the water until you cool it down which only happens once it hits your air tool and expands creating a vapor cloud

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage 4 місяці тому

      A lot of the cooling happens in the tank due to the large surface area. One important advantage of cooling before the air hits the tank is to limit the amount of water that collects in the tank which increases its life. If you are using your air tools at an increased rate, the air has less time to cool in the tank before it makes it to your tool where, just as you described, rapidly cools and condenses and sprays water vapor on everything!
