    Thanks for actually showing the fails with a broken bolt and non successful welding nut. These are the things people dont see or realize happen. Great video

      Thanks Aaron. I agree, real life is a little different than the shows on TV where everything goes perfectly and it only takes 30 minutes! 😂

    Thank you for this video. My 2006 is at 165,000 and giving the typical codes. I’m trying to psyche myself up to pull the turbo out and do this. I know it needs it. Mine still has an intact EGR.

      You’re welcome! Be careful with those up-pipe to turbo pedestal bolts. They are normally very stuck and will snap if you get too aggressive with them!

    I'm interested in seeing your parts cleaning setup. Wow what a good job you did cleaning the turbocharger, something I need to do on my newly purchased LB7 engine...

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  Рік тому

      Thanks! I’m not gonna lie, that took quite a bit of elbow grease to get it cleaned up! I cleaned the big iron parts in my harbor freight 20 gallon parts cleaner with some purple power degreaser and some stuff scrub brushes. For the aluminum parts and the center section, I used orange degreaser in a heated 8gal ultrasonic cleaner.

    How do you remove pin from plunger. The video didnt really show how you did it before cleaning parts.

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  Рік тому +1

      Yeah I didn’t do a great job at capturing that part of the disassembly. You have to use a drift punch and hammer to drive out the pin. It is snug but doesn’t take that much force to get it out. Hope that helps!

    Great video! Did you need to have it balanced before using it? Also, did you reuse the 3mm roll pin? Also, what seals are used for the coolant lines?

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  Місяць тому

      Thanks! The compressor wheel is pre-balanced. I’m pretty sure a new roll pin came with the kit (not 100% sure on that) and the oil lines use copper banjo bolt crush seals.

    How freely should the armature that turns the unison ring turn? Mine turned much easier before tear down and reassembly.

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  2 місяці тому +1

      Mine was the same way. Once you get everything all lubed up again it will free up.

    Question, how freely does it need to spin
    Mine feels a little tight

    • @richphippsgarage

      I recall there being a slight amount of resistance. Definitely more than before the rebuild.

    Great Video. Is the little arm that moves the unison ring supposed to be hard to move by hand?

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  4 місяці тому

      If it is still connected to the plunger, it may be hard to rotate (because you’re moving the plunger back and forth) but if it’s disconnected it should rotate freely.

    Did you balance the turbo shaft after adding the new billet compressor wheel?

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  11 місяців тому +1

      Nope, the rebuild kit I used came with a pre-balanced compressor wheel.

    Does the plunger and gear sit in an oil stream during operation or does it require grease?

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  11 місяців тому

      Yessir, the plunger and gear will be in the oil flow. It’s actually oil pressure that drives the plunger in and out!

    What was the cleaning solution you used in the ultrasonic cleaner?

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  11 місяців тому

      I used the Zep orange citrus cleaner since it’s safe on aluminum but still pretty strong!

      Ok sweet. I just bought an untrasonic cleaner. A 30 liter. At what ratio did you dilute it? I wanna do all the turbo housing parts. Hot side and cold side. Just wanna make sure i don't go overboard with it and.mayne damage something. Turbo was purchased used and it's in good condition but bought all new components anyway.

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  11 місяців тому

      I put the whole gallon in there and filled the rest of the way with water so I think that comes out to a 1:7 ratio of cleaner to water

    Did you put the whole center section in parts washer?

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  Рік тому +1

      It was either the parts washer or ultrasonic cleaner, I can’t remember 😬. Either way, I used a mild water based degreaser to clean it up.

    I’m in the process of rebuilding my turbo off my lly…not sure how to get that pin out that holds the gear that moves the plunger lookin thing I can get it off the gear and push it out but it won’t go all the way through any tips?

    • @richphippsgarage
      @richphippsgarage  Рік тому

      You have to use a roll pin punch (or similar punch) to carefully drive that pin out to separate the gear and shaft that drives the unison ring. Once you get the pin mostly out, you should be able to remove the shaft then carefully drive the pin the rest of the way out of the gear.

      @@richphippsgaragethank you i appreciate it there was a tad bit of runt on the end of the cylinder the plunger sits it a light touch with sand paper, slid right out but in the process of putting it together I broke the first tooth on that pinion gear and can’t seem to find a replacement one anymore…but thanks for the help I really appreciate it!
