I thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 2018. I thru-hiked the Continental Divide Trail in 2021. There is so much to see and do on our amazing planet and this is a place to share those adventures.
Kungsleden 2023 Day 18 The Final Steps A Journey to Remember
Did we think it couldn't get any windier? It can. Our final day we get a little bit of everything as far as the weather goes. Some sun, wind, rain, even some sights of fresh snow on the mountain tops. It's a very fitting end to an incredible experience.

Kungsleden 2023 Day 17 Near the End A Day of Extremes
Переглядів 286Рік тому
A day of extremes. We wake up to one of our most beautiful sunrises, which is then followed by one of our windiest mornings, and wettest afternoons. It will be our last night camping on the Kungsleden, and as we shiver our way in to dry clothes, we know it's one we won't forget.
Kungsleden 2023 Day 16 The Windy Mountains
Переглядів 397Рік тому
We leave Ammarnas and climb up into the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve. As vind means wind, I assume this means the windy mountains. The translation isn't quite right, but the idea proves to be right on. The mountain views are stunning, but we are quite windblown by the end of our day.
Kungsleden 2023 Day 15 Ridgewalking to Ammarnäs

With 14 miles to go to our next town, we enjoy a fairly leisurely walk out of the valley, along the ridges along side the valley, and then back down into the valley again. Even with the clouds, the colors and views do not disappoint. Every grateful for the luxury of a shower and a cooked meal, we enjoy our evening in Ammarnäs.

Leaving another pleasant camp spot, we start the day in good spirits and go on to hike our longest day on this trail, 24 miles. The terrain has it's usual up then down, but there is a lot of beautiful rolling landscape above treeline in the middle. As usual we are not totally dry, but it's a pretty nice day all the same.
Kungsleden 2023 Day 12-13 All the pretty water...and a shower! Jäkkvikk and beyond
Переглядів 334Рік тому
It's been a week since our last shower so I am so excited to arrive at the hostel in the small town of Jäkkvik! Day 12 is a short walk in to town and then a day of relaxing, resupplying, and getting clean. On day 13 we leave town for the trail once again and are met with another one of my favorite days on the Kungsleden. Sunny skies and beautiful water abound.
Kungsleden 2023 Day 11 Crossing the Arctic Circle
Переглядів 413Рік тому
Today we cross our final two lakes by boat, one by motorboat and the other by rowboat. It's a day of crossings as we also cross the Arctic Circle line, as well as other pretty rivers, and of course at least one mountain. Another beautiful day on the Kungsleden.

After one of our sunniest days, we wake up to one of our grayest. Rain above and mud below, this is a wet day. Even with clouds the trail provides some stunning scenery.

After a yummy Swedish breakfast at the kvikkjokk Fjällstation, we enjoy a boat ride with long time locals. Blessed with open blue skies, we climb high for some of the most open and stunning views of the trail.

On day 8 we take a side hike off the Kungsleden to the mighty Skierfe, a gorgeous sheer cliff overlooking the valley below. It's a day with a lot of ups and downs for me, both literally and figuratively.
Kungsleden 2023 Day 6 A Day of Surprises Stora Sjofallet to Sitojaure

We get a relaxed start, spending the morning waiting for the bus at the Stora Sjöfallet lodge. We meet an unexpected friend when we arrive at the Saltoluokta Fjällstation. The weather on our hike takes a turn in the afternoon and after a boat ride in the rain, we finish the day pretty wet.

Our first "town day" has us staying at a remote mountain lodge, stopping at a world heritage sight, and exploring the beautiful Stora Sjöfallet waterfall that gives the national park its name. We get to ride bicycles, learn about and explore the area, and enjoy some delicious local cuisine.

Where did you camp on your third night, if you remember? Thanks! And enjoyed your video, can't wait to plan out these hikes for myself!
I’m getting ready to take on the trail in November 2025… you mention in this video that it’s early Fall… October? What months did you hike the MST?
I started around September 8th and finished at the end of October. I biked and paddled some of the sections east of here. So yes in this video it would have been either late September or early October. That's exciting you'll be out there next year! It's a cool trail! 😎
Thanks for this video. Hiking this section in a few weeks and I can't wait! Lived and worked at Pisgah Inn many years ago and it gave my heart a lift to see it again from that view.
I loved this stop at the Pisgah Inn! I'm sure you'll really enjoy this section. Best of luck on your hike!
My gosh yes. Rain gear good grief. Water is just such an inexorable force. Pretty much everyone has conceded defeat but I'm trying a light weight rain suit in conjunction with an umbrella to reduce exposure and prolong wetting out. Managed to get it down to 15oz total. I don't know. Ill try it.
Ha, yep. I still haven't found my perfect solution. I've considered the umbrella option but never tried it. You'll have to let me know what you think.
Wow. Your video started playing without me knowing what it was, I never heard of that trail. Going to look for more e of your videos. Thanks
Cool! Glad to introduce you to a new adventure! I've also hiked the PCT, CDT, and a trail in sweden called the Kungsleden if you find any of those interesting.
Need try pan fried livermush with egg cheese and Dukes Mayo on a bun. Life changing
Yeah...I'm gonna leave that one for my uncle as well. Not sure I can handle that much change in my life. 😉
My view from Skierfe was similarly disappointing. It was a major goal of my hike tho. I hope you figured out the cross country shortcut that avoids going most of the way to Aktse. That’s a lot of unnecessary up and down! Kings Trail / Kungsleden ua-cam.com/play/PLZagpVwkLMBSvrJq1AHrRoA5HQqrE92vy.html

Hmm...I don't think we did find that short cut. All the up and down for us I guess!
Jay Wanders Out videos for Kungsleden are outstanding!
For sure. I know he works hard on them.
Your assessment of the rocks’ impact on hiking pace is right on. It’s hard to get a rhythm going. I fell 5 times almost exclusively on wet rocks. Kings Trail / Kungsleden ua-cam.com/play/PLZagpVwkLMBSvrJq1AHrRoA5HQqrE92vy.html
Yep. It also means lots of staring at your feet to try to avoid those falls.
I had lunch at Kaitumjaure at the same table. Next time, I hope my hiking day ends there so I can have dinner and breakfast with that view! Kings Trail / Kungsleden ua-cam.com/play/PLZagpVwkLMBSvrJq1AHrRoA5HQqrE92vy.html
Cool! One of the more scenic lunch spots for sure!
I thought the valley north of Tjäktja Pass was awesome. You are pronouncing it as well as any non-Swede could pronounce it. Kings Trail / Kungsleden ua-cam.com/play/PLZagpVwkLMBSvrJq1AHrRoA5HQqrE92vy.html
Yeah so pretty. Oh man, pronunciation. Haha, the struggles were real.
It rained on me “only” 10 days of my 24 days on trail. I felt lucky! Lots of cloudy days. Views when sunny were unbelievable. Kings Trail / Kungsleden ua-cam.com/play/PLZagpVwkLMBSvrJq1AHrRoA5HQqrE92vy.html
10 out of 24 is pretty good! I generally felt like we were pretty lucky too. We certainly had clouds but we had some clear days too!
I loved the view from Alesjaure! Kings Trail / Kungsleden ua-cam.com/play/PLZagpVwkLMBSvrJq1AHrRoA5HQqrE92vy.html
Agreed!
I hiked NOBO from Hemavan to Abisko. What do you think? Which direction is the preferred direction? I’m planning to do it again next summer. Kings Trail / Kungsleden ua-cam.com/play/PLZagpVwkLMBSvrJq1AHrRoA5HQqrE92vy.html
Hmm. I don't think you can go wrong either way. I'm sure Abisko is a pretty finish. I believe we chose sobo for some logistical travel reasons. We were also going to be finishing near the end of the season and thought the weather might be gentler further south. If I did it again, I might hike nobo just to see it differently.
Why not stay in the shelter?
Some of the shelters are not intended for overnight stay. They are more meant as break spots and emergency shelters.
I wish you were showing the huts in much more detail especially including the inside of each of them.
Fair enough. We never really stayed in them though. We tent camped. Sometimes all I saw of the inside of them was the toilets. 🙃
That's the Linn Cove Viaduct around Grandfather Mountain.
Yes!
How many miles did you average a day?
Hmm. It varied. In this segment, around 10 miles I think? I always go a bit slower at the start. Probably 15-20 in the later walking segments.
Your smile is contagious!❤ Beautiful hike!
Haha thank you! 😊
@@JeniferJourneys :)
Mid-century, we courted on Water Rock Knob: no walkway, no pavement, no structures, just a gravel parking area. It was private especially at night. A ranger came one time, blinked his lights at us, and resumed his patrol. The world was wilder then. I had to lay her ashes there 60 odd years later. Good grief, I miss her something fierce - her and her mountains.
Thank you for sharing 😢
Clearly this was a special place for both of you. Sounds like you shared quite the life together. Thank you for sharing a bit of your love story.
Really enjoyed your video. This area is close home and it was fun seeing your reaction to landmarks very familiar to me.
Well you're lucky to live in a beautiful place! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Water Rock Knob is where she first kissed me. Also, where she claimed me as her own. Also, where her ashes rests now, 60 odd years later. Wonderful mountain girl, then wife for those 60 odd years. I miss her something awful, miss her mountains, miss her voice, miss the exuberance, the straight and narrow that she lived. What I would not give to see her again.
This is both beautiful and heartbreaking. I'm glad for your good memories and sorry for your loss. 😔
Having fun plugging some of the place names into Google Translate to see how they sound (and who knows how accurate THAT is...). And thank you for naming the places you're passing through. Have watched a couple of Kungsleden vlogs where no proper names are mentioned, and without being able to follow along, it all starts to blend together.
Haha, I try to mention places because I know people planning on doing these hikes are curious. But I know I butchered some of these! 😅 Hopefully Google gave you a better idea!
What a cool way to do the trail! I was thinking the flat parts would get pretty boring, but a bike would be awesome. Thanks for recording it.
Yeah, that was the first time I'd done any sort of bike touring. I really enjoyed it! Would definitely do it again. Glad you liked the videos!
Would you recommend starting late September for an eastbound thru hike? Or do you have other thoughts?
I think that would be fine. I started around September 8th and had some cold mornings in October, but in general the weather was pretty nice. Fall is a great time to hike in NC.
I'm thinking of walking this section. What shoes would you recommend? What about drinking water? Thank you!
Shoes are such a personal gear choice it is hard to make good recommendations. What's good for me might not work at all for someone else. Ideally something you’ve tested and know that you can walk comfortably in for hours. Also, make sure you have a good fit. Either too small or too big can cause issues, but I know I've suffered more in shoes that turned out to be too small. You'll be on a mixture of pavement and trail. I used trail runners for the whole trail, an older pair of La Sportiva Mutants. I carry a Sawyer filter for water and had lots of opportunities to fill up.
Thanks for the video. I am doing MTS out of asheville in May. I was hoping for a few more campsites near asheville but thats the way the cookie crumbles.
Yeah, it is a little tough right around the city. Best of luck on your hike!
@@JeniferJourneys eh...yeah...I skipped it. I hopped on the AT at Erwin instead....Trail days in a few days! Good times to be had! Just saying!
@@Lifesvagabond haha sounds like a blast! Unfortunately, I won't be around for it. The AT will have to be for another year. Have fun!
those deer! WOAH
I know! Animals are crazy!
Did you follow this on an app? Or was it very marked?
It's pretty well marked in most places. I did use an app that I believe was just called the "MST" app. I'm not positive, but I don't think it exists anymore. However, FarOut has now added the MST to their selection of thruhikes. FarOut has been a very reliable app for me on other trails.
Glad we tuned back in to see this new adventure, and you still have the hat (love it). Mine fell to pieces and will break in a new one.
So, sad story about that hat. I lost it on a bus after we finished this hike! 😫
@@JeniferJourneys Ya know you just love certain hats. Safe travels
😁
👍
Jenifer - I know exactly where you were when those views opened up. What you probably did was take a left (north) on the Green Mountain trail at the 4-way intersection, which takes you to the Fork Ridge viewpoint that overlooks Mt. Hardy and the western Middle Prong wilderness. Since there are no trail blazes because they aren't allowed in designated wilderness areas (I never understood that - confusing trail junctions just mean more manways and unofficial trails, which is worse for the plants and soil erosion), it's easy to get turned around. When I was there, I went there on purpose, following my Gaia app. To stay on the MST, you should stay straight and then at the next trail intersection, make a left and stay straight. It's kind of hard to describe though, so it's probably best to look at a Gaia or other hiking app. That's how I kept from getting lost. Anyway, you probably figured it out by now and at least you got to enjoy some beautiful views!
Hi! Yes, your description sounds pretty accurate to my experience. It was definitely the lack of trail markers in the wilderness area, (and also some day dreaming while walking and a lack of attention to where I was going 🤪) that got me turned around. But I figured it out. Happy Trails!
😁
👍
I’ve watched every one of your videos. Thanks for a superb effort. I normally get bored when viewing such a longer series, but I guess your personality had me hooked. I’ll be doing the MST in April and try to watch every Vid out there to glean even a smidgin of knowledge about the trail. Still haven’t decided on an Eastbound or Westbound trek. I’ll be 80 y.o. for the hike so westbound may give my legs/body that extra build for the mountains. I Thru-Hiked the AT in 1998, but I’m pretty sure the old frame isn’t quite the same! THX again for a great rendition. VIKING AT98
That's high praise! Thank you! Yeah I get bored watching some hiking videos too, so I'm glad these were able to keep you entertained! You might still be on trail if you started in April. I hope it's going great! I'm so inspired by people like you who continue to do things like this in to their 80s. Incredible. I hope I can be as tough when I'm that at age! Best of luck out there! Whichever way you decided to go will be a rewarding finish. Happy Trails!
Hi, I am planing a thru hike of MTS this Spring. What hostel did you stay at in Asheville?
I stayed at Bon Paul and Sharkey's. All the best on your hike!
Love your music choices. Mud! Have you been on the AT up in Vermont? Now that's mud... Looks like you're still having fun, though.
I am still missing much of the Northeast in my explorations. Hope to do the AT one day. Hopefully it will be less muddy. 🤪
Jen. I am a biker. Have enjoyed 😅 riding along with you. Looking forward to getting back on trail.
That's great you are a biker. After this trip, I've gained more appreciation for biking and would be interested in doing more trips in the future.
Jennifer...I've really been enjoying following you. The intimacy and humanity you project in your narrative show you to be a wonderful human being. You're doing great...loved your comments about your camping with the school kids.
Thanks so much! Glad you've enjoyed following along. Yes, it's amazing what parts of yourself you will discover on trips like these. I was so eager to be around people! 😄
Hello Jenifer, I'm enjoying watching your videos, I'm only going to watch NM then watch the remainder when I start later this year. Could you tell me when you started please
I started April 15th. I still hit the San Juans a little early, but it worked out. Good luck on your trek!
I really liked the scenery on this bit, people often mention the Gila river for NM but those volcanic formations are amazing 👌
New Mexico has a lot of beautiful spots. The Gila is special, but so is this!
Whoa! 🐻 🧸 🧸
Planning to do the Mountains to the Sea trail in April. Would appreciate your thoughts on starting in April?
I know! 😅
The no bikes sign was a let down. I dream of my first mtb tour. Which is why the CDT and AZT are on the radar.
I met a couple CDT bikers when I walked that trail. Seems like an amazing adventure!
I really like your attitude and demeanor on the trail. Laid back and take it as it comes. Your lingo, vocabulary and dialogue. You sound like me. The things you stop to look at and share like flowers, mushrooms, snakes, spiders etc, makes this trip fun to watch. Those are the things i (we all?) go out to enjoy on their turf. Fun stuff glad i found your channel. Because i may never do any AT or east coast in my life. So much PCT , CDT, CT, AZT, Uintas, Sawtooth …. For me being out west.
I'm glad you like the channel! And I'm with you, there is so much to explore out west. I was really happy to explore my home state of NC, but the dramatic landscapes of the western states will always have a part of my heart and imagination.
Did you build a spreadsheet of the daily mileage, camp sites, food stops? Getting ready for the trail next year :)
Haha, sorry I am unfortunately not that kind of organized. I have general plans and then I wing it. There are some good resources out there though! The friends of the MST website has lots of info, and since I've done the trail, FarOut (a phone app) had added the MST to their selection. I've used the app for other trails and it's been immensely helpful.
Beautiful journey. Thanks for alowing us to enjoy it with you.
Thanks for following along. Glad you enjoyed it!
