4 CREEKS - 4 TROUT Species | Tenkara Fly Fishing
For my first full video edit back after my new baby, I head to Central Utah to 4 different creeks. Creek 1 was a bust. I fished it for several hours without even spooking a fish. Creek 2 was muddy, but fun. I caught 3 different species (wasn't filming for the Rainbow Trout). Creeks 3 and 4 were loaded with Bonneville Cutthroats! Several very large ones for such a small creek.

I'm joined by the famous @skiddyfishing to catch the Colorado River Cutthroat Trout in both Utah and Wyoming. I start with my 7' 3-weight western fly rod and switch to my DragonTail Hydra. We both are able to meet our goal and catch a lot of extra fish! This is my second time trying a Western Fly Rod. It is a 7' 3 weight. It handled an 18 brown pretty well. I thought this water was going to be smaller than this. I probably should have used my 9' 5 weight. It was a lot of fun though. Western Fly Fishing is definitely growing on me. The "Cutthroat" that I caught in my last video turned out to be Cutbows so I had to make another trip out to Northwest Utah to finish it once and for all. I try 3 new creeks and I got it! I did catch another Cutty but wasn't filming. It was so difficult to keep going after a 4 hour drive and 5 hours without any fish.

Tankara Fly Fishing | Catching Beautiful Bonneville Cutthroat Trout from Muddy Creek in Central Utah
Welcome back
Thanks, Joe! It's good to be back. It's fun to experience these trips again after so long.
Some great looking Cutthroats.
Thank you! Definitely my favorite part of the trip
I love the artic greyling! They look like they are wearing a fancy dress! :)
I love catching these fish! They are beautiful!
Cutest baby ever! Also, you and Skiddy are very entertaining. It's fun to see you two having fun together! 😊
She is the cutest! 🥰 Skiddy and I always have a good time. Especially when we're catching a bunch of fish!
I love how you took the time to talk with those kids and save someone else from the faking tree! Not just in it for yourself! 😊
Those kids were super cute! They kept cheering when I would catch a fish. They asked so many questions and followed me up the creek. That tree was crazy! I stepped next to it and it almost fell over. I would hope people would do the same for me.
What is the disease you are talking about? Is it contagious? Does it kill them? Does it make the fish bad to eat?
Thanks so much for your comment!Great questions! The disease is called Whirling Disease. It is caused by a parasite that does get transferred from dead fish. It usually kills the fish very young because they can't swim well. It is supposed to be safe to eat the fish because the parasite doesn't affect humans, but I would never risk it... 🤔 I did report this to the Utah DWR. I read somewhere you were supposed to kill these fish outside the water to avoid it spreading but the DWR told me to not do that because lots of people would mis-diagnose it and kill fish that just have scoliosis or something similar.
@@tntepicadventures thanks for the info.
No problem at all!
Those birds you heard are sandhill cranes. Awesome birds. Known as “ribeye of the sky”
Thanks so much for the info and your support! That's way cool. They made the strangest sounds.
My kids try and mimic the sound they make. It's so funny when they do! If they are called "rib-eye" does that mean people eat them?
Congrats on your cute kid. Happy to see videos again.
Thank you so much! She's been such a joy in our house! I'm excited to start paying videos again.
Congratz on the little one!
Thanks, Greg! She has been so much fun!
My goal is to drop all that summer weight 😂 great video dude! It was cool go see a different angle of that day. I really would love to fish that Wyoming side again but in August. Congratulations on completing your slam! 🎉
Haha! The camera adds 10 lbs and the GoPro adds 50! 😉 This was such a fun day and would have been even more epic with slightly lower water! I still have to submit both my Utah and Wyoming slams, but will get that done before the year ends.
@@tntepicadventures I still can’t believe the very first two fish we caught was our target and that was it! It’s rewarding to watch us catch those little brookies and not have to worry about whether it counted or not! Your “OH NO!” When you caught yours makes me laugh 😂. Fly rod certainly had its advantages in some of those turbulent stretches.
That was crazy! It made the rest of the trip so relaxing. I didn't get you catching you CRCT in Utah, but that was pretty early into the second river too. There was for sure real panic in my voice on that one! I was so scared that he was going to get off. That was nice to bring him all the way to me with the Western fly rod.
Awesome video
Thanks so much for watching!
I have one question for you were are you fishing at that looks like some seriously beautiful country that you are in
This was a tributary to the Weber River that I'd never been to before. I wasn't sure what I would find here... It turned out to be a pretty good place!
Congrats on the first catch. I’ve been fly fishing for close to two months and just got my first catch the a few days ago. It’s definitely a learning curve but absolutely worth all the effort.
That's awesome and I 100% agree! It's been pretty hard to learn, but well worth the effort for all the beautiful fish and places I get to see.
got my first catch today also a large wild brown trout!!
That's awesome! Brown trout are really fun to catch. Keep it going!
for casting tips on streamers/larger flies, see Orvis Pete Kutzer, keep your backcast lower, and then more overhead forward cast to expand you loop and keep from hitting your fly with the rod.
Thanks! I'll definitely check it out. I've learned that this rod is a little too soft for heavy streamers. I tried a dungeon fly and it was a disaster! 😂 It's part of learning new techniques though.
Where are you this time?
This was a tributary to the Weber River that I'd never been to before. I wasn't sure what I would find here... It turned out to be a pretty good place!
That horseshoe bend look amazing. Congrats on diversifying your skills! 😊
I had a hard time leaving that section! 😂 It's been a really good experience to take up Western Fly fishing. I'm very glad I have both skills now because they each have the benefits and work better in some situations.
Sweet video
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video! My son is a little younger but fishing with him is so fun. This looks like my kind of stream! If I’m ever in Utah I’ll get in touch!!
Thanks! It's so much fun passing along what I've learned and watching him get so much better! Definitely hit me up if you're in Utah.
i could watch vids like this all day
Thanks a ton for the comment! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I've got more coming.
Go Tanner!!!
Yeah, he's pretty awesome! Still learning but getting there quickly
Another entertaining video. So cool w/your son. The difference between the 2 rods was clear. You kept launching the little guys w/the Sharpshooter. Keep em coming & we’ll keep “liking & subscribing”! Neil
Thanks for your support, Niel! It means a lot! I'm glad we brought both rods and were able to compare them directly. Definitely differences and benefits to each of them.
Nice video!! Great to see a kid out Tenkara fishing. I don’t have the FoxFire rod, but I do have a fiberglass blended rod and it does really help in casting.
Thanks so much! This was such a fun trip. Tanner has become quite the fisherman. I use his FoxFire pretty often now because of how accurate it is. It's an awesome rod.
What an awesome adventure! I love seeing youngsters catch fish. That was some great instruction for the young man. Those fish are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing... Earned a new subscriber.
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! This is one of my favorite parts. I love being able to share the beautiful wilderness and fish with my family!
Leeds ?
Thanks for your support! I don't like to give away my exact locations on Social Media. I can tell you that this is not Leeds Creek, but it is in that same mountain range.
@@tntepicadventures yeah I understand I was going to delete comment if you confirmed haha. Awesome videos I fish all those creeks fun catching those cutthroats!
Agreed! These are some awesome creeks to fish.
Awesome channel man! Love the views and wildlife. Keep ‘em coming!
Thanks, bro! That's one of the main reasons I keep getting out there. I love the places I get to visit.
Love the epic rocks along that creek! Looks like there was just enough color to the water to give you a bit of cover. Those were some gorgeous cutthroat too!
For sure! This creek is beautiful! I didn't have to hide from the fish, which made it nice and easy. The fish here are gorgeous too!
Holy hunchback 😂😂 poor lil guy
I know, right!? It was crazy to see a fish like that. I'm glad the DWR doesn't think it's whirling disease. That's nearly impossible to get rid of. I did see a larger fish (13") on my next trip that had the same problem. So, hopefully that means this little guy can grow bigger.
That creek was perfectly suited for tenkara. Beautiful fish, and those red rocky bluffs were pretty special too. Looks like a fun place. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much! This is definitely going to be one of my go-tos during the colder months. I love the red rocks is Southern Utah
No idea where you are but the MOMENT the mirror lake area is melted out, I'm running to the Grayling lakes.
Do it! That area is beautiful!
Dude thats dope! The last grayling I caught was down at tibble in 2022 so that is awesome!
Thanks, man! There a few places to catch Grayling in Utah. I'm definitely going to try to find some new places this year.
Stellar video as always. I deep down have this gut feeling that the sharpshooter is your favorite rod
Thanks, Skiddy! It has been my go to rod for these small creeks for sure! I need to give the FoxFire a real try this summer too. I haven't used it enough yet. The Mizuchi is another one that I need to use more this summer.
@@tntepicadventures I really love the MIzuchi. It's one of my favorites still.
One of mine too
Awesome video! Are you changing your fly based on how deep the water is? Are you seeing the strike near the fly or is the line suddenly moving indicating the strike? I’m not the best at tenkara, especially in deep pools.
Thanks so much! I loved making this video! I changed to a dry fly when I saw some surface takes. I changed to a heavier fly when I noticed no takes and I wasn't getting to the bottom of deeper holes (couldn't feel the fly hitting the bottom). Then I changed randomly to see if they worked or to make things interesting. I love doing tests/experiments with different flies, especially on me creeks.
@@tntepicadventures that makes sense. You said this was southern Utah. Does it get too hot for trout? We visit Saint George frequently but I’ve never taken my tenkara gear. Wondered if there were even any places to try down that way.
The mountains in that area are a great place to Tenkara fish. Download Trout Routes (you can use the free version) and it will show you some creeks to check out in that area. Then use Google Maps to check out the terrain for those creeks. You'll definitely find some down there! 😉
Beauty cutts
Thank you! I couldn't stop admiring them
Dude! Solid! You got some cool underwater footage too. I feel like whenever I do GoPro releases they swim off in totally the wrong direction.
Thanks, Chris! Those underwater shots only turn out like 1/4 of the time... 😂
Cool location, both the lake and the outlet creek. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Thanks so much! I love the Uinta Mountains! They are gorgeous
Line looked great, appreciate the switch to 4k. I watch these videos on a large screen. Looking forward to fishing here again this year
Thanks for letting me know! Part of the video was only in 2K but the next one is 100% 4K so it should look even better. I keep checking snow levels each day. I can't wait to get back up there!
Nice to see some grayling caught
It is so cool to be able to catch them in Utah nowadays!
What fly were you using? Might have missed if you mentioned in video.
I used a Royal Wulff at the beginning, then a green mosquito and did most of the Brookies on a Killer Bug.
Well you sir have me jealous! I NEED more Grayling in my life!
Everyone could use more Grayling in their life! 😂 We'll have to go chase them together
I’ve caught them in a lake we backpacked into. This was before I knew about tenkara. Want to go back and try with tenkara and hit the creeks in and out.
Do it! I've caught them on spinner rods and Tenkara. Tenkara is so much funner to catch these fish on.
@@tntepicadventures pretty sure I fished this exact lake few years back with a fly and bubble. Renegade fly was crushing it. Last year was a lake east of this where we caught a bunch of grayling as well. How close was this creek to the lake?
The tigers are great with eggs and Johnny Cakes.
I've never tried that! I'll have to give it a go.
Good to see Tanner honing his tenkara skills. Those were some nice tigers!
He's getting so good! It's one of my favorite parts of fishing. The beautiful fish didn't hurt either. 😉
Good job, Tanner Man
He's becoming quite the fisherman!
💕 Wow💚💗💚💚💚💚💚
Thank you! 👍
Was this really March of 2024? Curious due to the lack of snow.
I wish it was! This was back in September 2023.
I need to fish more lakes there. I did lost lake and waded into it. Spin fishing all around me and I was catching 10-1 on everyone using Middle Fork lol! This made me sad these days are still a couple months away. Love the weather in this vid.
I have a hard time going to these lakes instead of rivers sometimes but it's nice to change it up. I do love these lakes, just not quite as much as high mountain rivers. That's cool that you're spinner out performed everything else! It's fun to go back to the basics for sure. I can't wait for the snow to melt and be able to get back up there! It's amazingly beautiful!
How do you like the Sharpshooter? I have one now, but have yet to use it
It's my go to for small rivers/creeks. I absolutely love it! My son and I just tested it against the Dragontail FoxFire (video coming soon) and the Sharpshooter is still my favorite because it is stiffer (6:4), which makes is easier to land the fish. The FoxFire was more accurate in casting though. Just depends on your preference.
We were in the Unitas several years ago . Stayed at the Trout Creek Flies cabins when they just had four . That is God’s country ! Trout , elk ,turkeys and deer ! Floated all three sections of the Green . Also fished a couple of the road side lakes . Those little fish in the lakes are a lot of fun . Glad l took my Sage 4711 . It was just the thing to really enjoy those lake fish with . Most of my fishing buddies are in Heaven . Hope I can make one more trip there before my time is up !
That is awesome! I love the Uintas and am so grateful that I live so close. I can't wait for the snow to melt so I can get back out there! It really is a heaven on earth. Thanks for watching
Pretty lake and fish
Agreed! On both. I take the whole family up the next weekend because it was so beautiful. I'm editing that video right now.
I'm a 76 year old man and I need the Yellowstone to complete the slam. I was wondering if you would be willing to help me get it done. I've caught them all on tenkara rods. I know that you fish the Weber and I would be willing to show you some of my spots. Thanks
That's awesome! I'm honestly not sure that I'll ever do the slam again because of how hard this Yellowstone was. The key for me was sneaking up on the bigger holes and even blind casting into them to avoid spooking the fish. If you use the FishBrain app, you can find me there link.fishbrain.com/Ugvx and I'll give you more details.
When I got my first yellowstone, I sat at the same spot for over an hour, crouched. Every time I missed one, I had to wait 5-10 minutes before trying again and change the fly.
Yeah, man! It was definitely the hardest one. I'm excited to do the Wyoming slam where the Yellowstone should be a lot funner.
@@tntepicadventuresno doubt and too many options to choose from rather than a select few. 😂😂
