Hello, my name is Greg and I am the self proclaimed Fishing Philosopher. This channel shows you how to create your own custom lures. Occasionally, I will add a video of a successful fishing trip but those are few...sigh. I've been doing art in some form since I was a wee child and now that I'm an adult child I still use art (and fishing) as an outlet for my creativity, mental clarity and enjoyment.
There is nothing quite like sitting in a boat or kayak or on the bank of a body of water, casting out your bait and feeling a fish give it a tug. Even more so, there's nothing like catching a fish on a lure you airbrushed or hand painted. I hope to show how accessible lure painting and designing can be for everyone.
Thank you for visiting.

How to build your own spoon lures! Step by step.
I have no idea why I haven't gotten into spoon fishing sooner. This lure can literally catch EVERY type of fish! Unfortunately, it sometimes catches tree limbs making you lose your precious utensil. Now you can make your own version of this highly dangerous lure and save a few bucks doing it. Raid your silverware drawer and lets get building! Hope this step by step guide helps.

Lure Painting | Amazingly simple holographic lure design
Переглядів 215Місяць тому
This lure design is great for those lures with a holographic insert. The windows allow light to reflect off the holograph and add some attention getting flash to the lure. I use a few techniques on the lure including masking the window area and using mesh to create a sort of scale effect. Lure Painting | Easy grasshopper crankbait
Переглядів 2513 місяці тому
Patience young grasshopper! I love painting this design because it gives me a chance to do some airbrushing and some brush painting. While the design isn't quite what a grasshopper looks like it's still a fairly realistic looking and possibly appetizing look to the grasshopper...I mean, I'd eat it if I were a fish... Lure Painting | Simple yet complex swim bait
Переглядів 3125 місяців тому
This design looks complex but it's actually really simple to pull off and you can do it with any colors you like. The swim bait has a kind of underwater pattern to it due to the random mesh ribbon but the color gradient gives the impression of flames. The color shift really amps up the glittery shiny goodness of the pattern without compromising the colors. Checkout my other videos www.youtube.c...
Lure Painting | Painting a translucent shrimp
Переглядів 2796 місяців тому
A shrimp? Yep! I have a small collection of lures I haven't gotten around to painting so decided to figure this one out. With the holographic insert this lure needed to be translucent. I wasn't really sure if the orange I used would work but gave it a try and I'm happy with the results. Lure Painting | Color shifting shad
Переглядів 2,1 тис.9 місяців тому
Shad are the most common live bait at the lakes I frequent so I tend to do a lot of shad based patterns. This lure design uses a few different techniques including mesh, stencils and color shift paint. The overall lure came out great and I hope to do more of this style in the future. Lure Painting | Quick and easy cotton candy ghost
Переглядів 3899 місяців тому
I haven't had a lot of time to paint over the past few weeks. When I got a minute to look through my blanks I saw how clear this lure was and knew the design I wanted to try. This lure is mostly see through but has a nice stain of raspberry across the top. I also added a more custom look to the eyes of this lure which gives it a sort of zombie or ghost like quality. When I was done with the lur...
Lure Painting | 3D Printed Lure - Bluegill Pattern
Переглядів 1,3 тис.10 місяців тому
A coworker got one of those 3-D printers and asked if I wanted to try working with a 3D printed lure. The design is a squarebill crankbait with some pockets inside for weight and/or rattles. A neighbor cut open a shotgun shell which had stainless steel BB's inside so I used those to enhance the lures noise and weight. I messed up a little trying to pop bubbles in the epoxy with a lighter. I hel...
Lure Painting | Super Easy Nuclear Bluegill
Переглядів 36711 місяців тому
This Nuclear Bluegill doesn't involve any difficult techniques yet it looks sharp and effective. The blush of orange on the cheeks(gills) of the lure was kind of unplanned as I wanted a small splash of color but didn't really want to stencil the gills out. All in all I'm really happy with the lure and can see it as a regular design using a variety of colors. Checkout my other videos www.youtube...
Lure Painting | Easy Poppin' Frog
Переглядів 29111 місяців тому
This lure didn't come out how I was envisioning but it should still work. I think I should've kept the lure clear and just painted the front on top. But I think the white belly should help fish find it better as it's popping along. This painting is a fairly easy design and there are a lot of cool frog designs you can do on the back and sides. Lure Painting | Paint your own eyes - simple design
Переглядів 399Рік тому
This lure mimics the look one of my favorite crank baits the SPRO RKCrawler DD50. I wanted to do a very simple design on this one that a beginner can mimic while using some things you can find around the house...like a bag of garlic. You can really go crazy with colors and details if you want but I think simple is sometimes better. Checkout my other videos www.youtube.com/@FishingPhilosophy Bru...
Lure Painting | 5 color clown pattern crankbait
Переглядів 606Рік тому
This clown pattern features 5 colors on a chrome crankbait blank. Unfortunately, I couldn't get this one right on the first try...nor the second. So what you see in this video is the third try at painting. The previous two tries came out asymmetrical in some fashion and I couldn't be happy with that. All in all it's a fun design and you can use a whole host of other colors to suit your taste. C...
Lure Painting | EASY minnow design to catch bass
Переглядів 624Рік тому
This lure painting reminds me of what a minnow might look like was it's passing away and floating on the top of the water. The minnow design is very easy and could have a number of colors on top depending on what minnows you have in your area. You could even forgo the strip in favor of the shad dot or maybe some foil design on the side. All in all this is a fun and easy custom lure to paint. Ch...
Lure Painting | Can this design get any easier?
Переглядів 285Рік тому
I was inspired by a water bottle my wife has had for many years. This metal water bottle was turquoise on the bottom and raspberry on top. In the middle the colors were scratched through usage but the scratching kind of blended the two colors together. I attempted to recreate this by giving this lipless crankbait a custom lure painting. *gets a snag*
Do you use spoons? What is your go to weight/size?
спасибо за урок.
cпасибо за просмотр!
thanks for the tip on the mesh just order some beats using braided line!
Great idea making the stripes by masking off the stencil. Thx! Extra tip…..when mixing epoxy I use a popsicle stick you can get at the dollar store. Clip the end off flat with side cutters so you can totally scrape the bottom of the mixing cup. Otherwise you can get streaks of unmixed epoxy which will result in soft spots that never cure on the finish. Also if you heat the epoxy five seconds in the microwave before stirring it gets slightly warm and mixes easier and more thoroughly
Great tips, I sometimes heat up the epoxy with a hair dryer if it’s too viscous. Thanks!
Spectacular.!!!!!!!!!!
Even if the colors were darker than you desired, it won't matter much to the fish. On top water lures, they mostly see a silhouette again the light from the sky. I think the colors and eyes are great.
Well looking pretty good...I ended up buying 100 pcs of those grasshoppers a year ago haven't painted any yet...but you're grasshopper looks good...
Thanks 👍
Super simple pattern yet a very effective one . Nice !
Nicely done !
Love your work! I need to start utilizing stencils.
Thank you! Yes, stencils up the details on the lure and there are tons of really cool stencils.
What psi do you ahoot the createx at and what size needle does your gun have
Iwata Eclipse HP-CS came with a 0.35 mm needle. I usually paint at anywhere from 20 to 40 psi depending on the detail I'm doing.
👍👍👍👍💥💥💥💥
Your black paint appears too thick. I used to exclusively use Createx opaques and thin them at least 20%. I can then spray them at 15-20# easily. If you use Createx reducer and UVLS mixed 50/50, when added to the paint it flows and adheres much better. I think I’m switching to Golden as I believe it’s easer to shoot, but I still add UVLS so the paint flows and adheres better. If your paint is mixed correctly with the right reducer you’ll virtually never get tip dry. I would really like to be able to shoot straight from the bottle but mixing gives me significantly better results even though it’s more trouble. Your airbrush is also far easier to clean. Dropping the pressure allows more control, you have less tip dry, and less overspray On your alligator clips, putting a piece of masking tape over the teeth helps stop the clips from scratching the base paint
Thanks for making the video! Where or what is is caps on your epoxy bottles that you use with the syringes? Thanks!
They actually come with the Flex Coat epoxy and I never used them until I got new bottles recently. They make it easier to get the epoxy out without making a mess.
@@FishingPhilosophy thanks!
Happy Christmas man :) and thanks for sharing tips etc :)
Thank you. Happy Christmas to you!
Very nice! Outstanding job! Thanks my friend!
Where can I get that meash?
That particular mesh can be found at a local fabric store, Walmart, Joanne Fabric, etc.
Great job. Simple spray but very effective. Enjoyed the video. Keep up the good work
Great pattern...Great video ...short and full of information easy to follow
Outstanding looking lure ,thanks for sharing 👍.
Nice job
I can take you ice fishing in the dark and prove you wrong easy.
Nice work

What airbrush do you use ???
Iwata Eclipse HP-CS
Could you make more patterns with color shift paints?
Yes I will.

Absolutely one of my favorites! I love those shad type patterns. Keepup the great work buddy!
Really nice looking color pattern! Thanks for the painting tutorial and taking time to make the videos!
Nice job😀👏
I have been playing with colorshifts as well. Using a different base color changes the look entirely. It also seems like a little bit goes a long way. Hard to tell through mesh at times.
How you make lure turner. I love paint pattern. Thanks
What can I do to avoid making the resin stiffen on the brush every time I apply it?
I buy the brushes in bulk from Amazon and use a new brush per lure (or if I have a few lures ready I quickly use one brush for them). Otherwise you risk much stiffer bristles, chunks of dried epoxy, etc getting on your lure.
@@FishingPhilosophy ok i do the same thing. 😁
Where did u find that blank? Thx
I found it at sugartitcustomlures.com, however after going through all their lures I don't see it currently available.
Lute came out great. I really like the eyes. Where did you get them from. I love the repurpose of the mylec hockey stick aswell. lol.
Thanks! I got the eyes from Amazon. There’s a link to the eyes I got in the description of the video.
What airbrush kit can i get thats cheap but works.... just to see if this is something i want to do.... I've used spray paint and they turned out half decent so they would look great if i had an air brush
I started using a cheap Master airbrush set (compressor, hose, airbrush) from Amazon and did not like the results. I moved to the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS and love it. It is not a cheap brush though at about $150 from Hobby Lobby. The Iwata Neo is supposed to be a good beginner brush which is around $70 on Amazon. The Badger Patriot 105 is also supposed to be a good beginner brush and is about $100 on Amazon. Don't forget, if you don't already have it, you'll need a compressor, hose and water trap. For my use, one of those small fan compressors does the job but if you're doing a quantity of lures you might want to have a tank compressor on hand.
Third time a charm
Nice job
Seems easy enough eyes look good
I thought this was very nice! Good job my friend! Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks for sharing!
Very nice pattern and color choices....Great job...
The lure look's fine to me, do you ever use dayglow or neon paints for extra attraction? Where do you get the metal handle brushes from. Another great concise video, I enjoyed every second thank you.
I have used some neon-ish paint but haven’t lately. A chartreuse I have is very neon like. I get the metal handled brushes from amazon, search “flux brushes”. I often use pliers to pinch the brush ferrule more so less bristles fall out. Thank you.
Definitely a favorite! Great job!
Cool for sure!
Super nice!
Great job! One of my favorites! Thanks for sharing buddy!
