Fishing Philosophy

Hello, my name is Greg and I am the self proclaimed Fishing Philosopher. This channel shows you how to create your own custom lures. Occasionally, I will add a video of a successful fishing trip but those are few...sigh. I've been doing art in some form since I was a wee child and now that I'm an adult child I still use art (and fishing) as an outlet for my creativity, mental clarity and enjoyment.
There is nothing quite like sitting in a boat or kayak or on the bank of a body of water, casting out your bait and feeling a fish give it a tug. Even more so, there's nothing like catching a fish on a lure you airbrushed or hand painted. I hope to show how accessible lure painting and designing can be for everyone.
Thank you for visiting.

Paint like me | Easy to do trout design
I don't get to trout fish much aside from when they stock the local pond but thought it might be an interesting design. Aside from the white it's only three colors but you can probably fiddle around with a rainbow design (which I might try) or some other trout like look. You can make it as simple or complex as you want.

Paint like me | Even Simpler Bluegill Lure Design
Переглядів 2235 місяців тому
This design can be done on almost any blank and it will look great. All you need are 3 colors and white! Lately I've seen bass chasing small bluegill around in the shallows. I've eliminated a few of the more complex parts of this design in favor of making it simple yet effective. How to build your own spoon lures! Step by step.
Переглядів 6307 місяців тому
I have no idea why I haven't gotten into spoon fishing sooner. This lure can literally catch EVERY type of fish! Unfortunately, it sometimes catches tree limbs making you lose your precious utensil. Now you can make your own version of this highly dangerous lure and save a few bucks doing it. Raid your silverware drawer and lets get building! Hope this step by step guide helps. Lure Painting | Amazingly simple holographic lure design
Переглядів 3118 місяців тому
This lure design is great for those lures with a holographic insert. The windows allow light to reflect off the holograph and add some attention getting flash to the lure. I use a few techniques on the lure including masking the window area and using mesh to create a sort of scale effect. Lure Painting | Easy grasshopper crankbait
Переглядів 2849 місяців тому
Patience young grasshopper! I love painting this design because it gives me a chance to do some airbrushing and some brush painting. While the design isn't quite what a grasshopper looks like it's still a fairly realistic looking and possibly appetizing look to the grasshopper...I mean, I'd eat it if I were a fish... Lure Painting | Simple yet complex swim bait
Переглядів 35711 місяців тому
This design looks complex but it's actually really simple to pull off and you can do it with any colors you like. The swim bait has a kind of underwater pattern to it due to the random mesh ribbon but the color gradient gives the impression of flames. The color shift really amps up the glittery shiny goodness of the pattern without compromising the colors. Checkout my other videos www.youtube.c...
Lure Painting | Painting a translucent shrimp
Переглядів 369Рік тому
A shrimp? Yep! I have a small collection of lures I haven't gotten around to painting so decided to figure this one out. With the holographic insert this lure needed to be translucent. I wasn't really sure if the orange I used would work but gave it a try and I'm happy with the results. Lure Painting | Color shifting shad
Переглядів 3 тис.Рік тому
Shad are the most common live bait at the lakes I frequent so I tend to do a lot of shad based patterns. This lure design uses a few different techniques including mesh, stencils and color shift paint. The overall lure came out great and I hope to do more of this style in the future. Lure Painting | Quick and easy cotton candy ghost
Переглядів 496Рік тому
I haven't had a lot of time to paint over the past few weeks. When I got a minute to look through my blanks I saw how clear this lure was and knew the design I wanted to try. This lure is mostly see through but has a nice stain of raspberry across the top. I also added a more custom look to the eyes of this lure which gives it a sort of zombie or ghost like quality. When I was done with the lur...
Lure Painting | 3D Printed Lure - Bluegill Pattern
Переглядів 2,3 тис.Рік тому
A coworker got one of those 3-D printers and asked if I wanted to try working with a 3D printed lure. The design is a squarebill crankbait with some pockets inside for weight and/or rattles. A neighbor cut open a shotgun shell which had stainless steel BB's inside so I used those to enhance the lures noise and weight. I messed up a little trying to pop bubbles in the epoxy with a lighter. I hel...
Lure Painting | Super Easy Nuclear Bluegill
Переглядів 441Рік тому
This Nuclear Bluegill doesn't involve any difficult techniques yet it looks sharp and effective. The blush of orange on the cheeks(gills) of the lure was kind of unplanned as I wanted a small splash of color but didn't really want to stencil the gills out. All in all I'm really happy with the lure and can see it as a regular design using a variety of colors. Checkout my other videos www.youtube...
Lure Painting | Easy Poppin' Frog
Переглядів 313Рік тому
This lure didn't come out how I was envisioning but it should still work. I think I should've kept the lure clear and just painted the front on top. But I think the white belly should help fish find it better as it's popping along. This painting is a fairly easy design and there are a lot of cool frog designs you can do on the back and sides. Lure Painting | Paint your own eyes - simple design

This lure mimics the look one of my favorite crank baits the SPRO RKCrawler DD50. I wanted to do a very simple design on this one that a beginner can mimic while using some things you can find around the house...like a bag of garlic. You can really go crazy with colors and details if you want but I think simple is sometimes better. Checkout my other videos www.youtube.com/@FishingPhilosophy Bru...
Lure Painting | 5 color clown pattern crankbait
Переглядів 655Рік тому
This clown pattern features 5 colors on a chrome crankbait blank. Unfortunately, I couldn't get this one right on the first try...nor the second. So what you see in this video is the third try at painting. The previous two tries came out asymmetrical in some fashion and I couldn't be happy with that. All in all it's a fun design and you can use a whole host of other colors to suit your taste. C...

Nice
I think most “tip dry” isn’t really tip dry. It’s very tiny chunks of dried paint that come off the bottle cap when you add new paint to the brush. I used to be continually frustrated by “tip dry” until I got meticulous about cleaning the bottle caps. A chunk considerably smaller than a grain of sand will plug your brush. Never saw someone used the netting twice. Looks great. You’re right about the card stock moving. Trying to hold the lure steady, the card in place, control the brush position and spray pattern is challenging Nice work and finished color. Thx
Would you say the tea spoon your using has slow side to side wobble on an average retrieve. The reason I’m curious is it because the smaller the spoon is the faster it wobbles. I’m thinking of goin to some old gift shops to see if I can find some rather small.
Both teaspoons and tablespoons lures I’ve made have a rather medium speed wobble on drop and are very active on the jig up. You should be able to find some great spoons for lures at a gift shop, yard sale or flea market. I’ve since got a bench grinder and it makes the process much faster.
@ Thank you for the insight. I have the things needed to cut & smooth edges down. There’s so many style spoons which I like, but shall go with this for now. May you have many more great days fishing. Great video..👍
What kind of material is that
The tool to bend the wires, what is it called as ? Great video
Wire looping pliers, usually used for jewelry. There are stepped ones that allow you to bend a variety of sizes. Thanks!
Actually, it's a simple but very elegant looking craw pattern. Great one man
Thank you, I appreciate you checking it out.
Just did this pattern. Thanks man looks great
Awesome! Glad you liked it.
Very nice
It good for the salt water?! "Color"
Never tried these lures in salt water. If the lure is heavy enough to get out there it might attract something.
awesome, finally found something that combined 3d print with my usual workflow of lure building. How did it hold up? Thanks!
The lure has held up well. Haven't had any bites on it yet but it does have ok action. The epoxy keeps it looking good.
Nice!
আপনি কি এগুলো বিক্রি করেন
No I don't. I just give instructions so folks can make their own.
I just bought some blank square bills that I want to start painting to stay busy in the winter. Your video was very informative. TY!
ive tried using the creatix glow n the dark and have no luck.
What did you use for coating?
I list all the things I use in the description so you have a better idea. I use Flex Coat from Amazon: amzn.to/3pML8Y9
Good work on the videos. I like that you have them shorter by speeding up the video at the routine parts - I don't like having to watch 30 minutes video for 5 minutes of content. I also like that you use text headers for the lure data and paint colors - I find that useful. I also like that you have good voice over audio and I can clearly understand what you are saying. This was a great video to stream line the process of making perch lures and I'm going to will try it this weekend. Keep up the good work.
Sweet! Headed to the workshop now to try this one out! Thanks man!
I know this will be tough to believe but it is true. Just this morning I painted two small ploppers like this one with a bone colored body (mixed 10 drops of opaque white and two drops of any yellow to get the bone color. I will do both with this pattern. Two days I ago I did a bone plopper on a 130 mm and painted red under gill plate -- fins and then using a handmade stencil painted a set of fins on belly between the side fins and two more in front of the split between the body and tail and then a light red throat. Sent it north to the Chippewa Flowage outside Hayward, WI (The Musky Capital of the World) where my friend caught an undersize Wisconsin State fish this morning. Give it a try. Also red hooks -- a #1 on the tail and a #2 on the belly and a small split ring on the front line attachment. Our experience is be ready for a t-bone attack more times that a rear attack. Good luck.
That's awesome! I've been wanting to add some red hooks too. Thanks for watching!
What epoxy do you use I want to get into lure painting but I make worms anyway
If you check out my full videos I list all the things I use in the description so you have a better idea. I use Flex Coat from Amazon: amzn.to/3pML8Y9
Ok thank you
Crankbait
I like the " straight to the point " videos with no blah, blah, blah about stuff that doesn't matter. This is educational and inspiring. I just started painting lures a few months ago and hopefully, when I get enough experience, I'll be able to share what I've learned with videos like yours. Thanks man. I'm gonna give this one a try. 👍new subscriber
Thank you! Be sure to share when you get some vids made. Would love to see your work!
*gets a snag*
Do you use spoons? What is your go to weight/size?
спасибо за урок.
cпасибо за просмотр!
thanks for the tip on the mesh just order some beats using braided line!
Great idea making the stripes by masking off the stencil. Thx! Extra tip…..when mixing epoxy I use a popsicle stick you can get at the dollar store. Clip the end off flat with side cutters so you can totally scrape the bottom of the mixing cup. Otherwise you can get streaks of unmixed epoxy which will result in soft spots that never cure on the finish. Also if you heat the epoxy five seconds in the microwave before stirring it gets slightly warm and mixes easier and more thoroughly
Great tips, I sometimes heat up the epoxy with a hair dryer if it’s too viscous. Thanks!
Spectacular.!!!!!!!!!!
Even if the colors were darker than you desired, it won't matter much to the fish. On top water lures, they mostly see a silhouette again the light from the sky. I think the colors and eyes are great.
Well looking pretty good...I ended up buying 100 pcs of those grasshoppers a year ago haven't painted any yet...but you're grasshopper looks good...
Thanks 👍
Super simple pattern yet a very effective one . Nice !
Nicely done !
Love your work! I need to start utilizing stencils.
Thank you! Yes, stencils up the details on the lure and there are tons of really cool stencils.
What psi do you ahoot the createx at and what size needle does your gun have
Iwata Eclipse HP-CS came with a 0.35 mm needle. I usually paint at anywhere from 20 to 40 psi depending on the detail I'm doing.

Привет из России хорошая работа. Тоже увлекаюсь работой с воблерами.
Your black paint appears too thick. I used to exclusively use Createx opaques and thin them at least 20%. I can then spray them at 15-20# easily. If you use Createx reducer and UVLS mixed 50/50, when added to the paint it flows and adheres much better. I think I’m switching to Golden as I believe it’s easer to shoot, but I still add UVLS so the paint flows and adheres better. If your paint is mixed correctly with the right reducer you’ll virtually never get tip dry. I would really like to be able to shoot straight from the bottle but mixing gives me significantly better results even though it’s more trouble. Your airbrush is also far easier to clean. Dropping the pressure allows more control, you have less tip dry, and less overspray On your alligator clips, putting a piece of masking tape over the teeth helps stop the clips from scratching the base paint
I know it's been a while since you commented but I've been diluting my opaque black and it is performing so much better. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for making the video! Where or what is is caps on your epoxy bottles that you use with the syringes? Thanks!
They actually come with the Flex Coat epoxy and I never used them until I got new bottles recently. They make it easier to get the epoxy out without making a mess.
@@FishingPhilosophy thanks!
Happy Christmas man :) and thanks for sharing tips etc :)
Thank you. Happy Christmas to you!
Very nice! Outstanding job! Thanks my friend!
Where can I get that meash?
That particular mesh can be found at a local fabric store, Walmart, Joanne Fabric, etc.
Great job. Simple spray but very effective. Enjoyed the video. Keep up the good work
