Sailing BC Gulf Islands - SV Uluwatu

Cruising the Gulf Islands from Vancouver with Marco, Todd and Dave from the OG Westbeach crew and met up with Scott's and Phil's sailboats in Telegraph Harbour. Next stop up to Newcastle Marine Park and then back down to Wallace Island before heading back across the straight. Solid first boys trip with SV Uluwatu.
the stern line should go ashore around a tree and back to the boat then you can release it with out going ashore G
cribbage is not for just old people im 83 have played crib for over 60 years geeeeez boated the PNW for over 70years G
I think you will look back at these videos and be happy you documented the adventure...that being said...I'll stick with a backpack and snorkel 😅. Even a surfboard is too much work to travel with anymore for me.
Glad you got the drone back, and rescued your sailing underway clips! Too risky for me. Keep up the fun vids-looking forward to the next one!
Hey Jim, i am going to make a handle and see how that goes. If it works will make you one.
@@Sailingbc thanks, that would be great! So hope it works!
I lived on “G” Dock at Sidney Marina, thanks for the memories. I sailed away in 2015 never to return, not because I didn’t love it there as I did love it but sailing around the world seemed move adventurous. Currently in Thailand. Cheers I produced a UA-cam Channel back in the day Off the Starboard Hull
Right on! Such a great marina. Will check out your channel. Safe travels!
Thank Scott. The plan is to follow suit. A few more years to restructure life and qualify for early pension and we are out of here. We may start out on our boat but hope to upgrade to a cat. How do you find the Lagoon 400 after a number of years on it?
Christophe and Cameo here(Black boat at 9:46) it was good meeting you at the pub that day. You’re really doing the miles. Good on you….
Yes! So great to meet you guys! and I hope we see each other out on the water this summer! Your boat was the midnight / moonlight gambler? Such a nice boat!! 🍻
Hi, we are a little behind on editing 🤦🏼 but will catch up one day... Lots of trips planned yet this spring then off to the west coast of the island again this summer. Where are you cruising these days?
Love your channel so far, look forward to your future adventures.
Thanks Tom, we are a little behind on editing but have a whole bunch lined up. Thanks for watching.
Hint. Keep a real close eye on your keel bolts as they tend to work lose. Also, next time you haul out, use the Copper coat process. Yes, spendy up front, yet you will not have to do it again for at least 5-10 years. Just dive the boat and keep the green off. 😊😊
We are a little behind on editing but have done a haul out and bottom paint job. I used Pettit Odyssey Triton which am hoping to get 3-4 years. I watched @wesail recently do an episode on coppercoat and while a lot of work and expense, looks like a good option, especially while remote and less access to haul outs.
When trying to catch your drone at sea, switch your controller to sport mode just before trying to catch it. That will over-ride virtually all your safety sensors and you can catch it by hand. Obviously, do that from underneath. Once you have it, simple flip it upside down and the props will stop.
Thanks. Did that for a bit and was still having issues where it would move while grabbing so now put black electrical tape over the sensors for full atti mode. Eventually going to make an actual handle I can grab. I am a bleeder but that’s another episode . lol.
Great video!! Looking forward to seeing you guys in a few months😎⛵️
Thanks Kiki… summer can’t come soon enough.
I’m consistently blown away by how beautiful it is there! Those crabs were huge I bet they were delicious!
It is so beautiful up here, wait until we get to the West Coast of Vancouver island episodes. That blew our minds, just amazing. Oh and the crabs were sooooo good. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video. There are so many anchorages still to explore. Montague would be great early in the year when it should be relatively easy to get a mooring ball or dock space compared to the height of summer when it is more busy. I believe running the diesel at low rpm for long periods can lead to carbon build up. They tend to like to be worked.
Thanks, we have checkmarked a pile of anchorages to hit up, can't wait. Good call on the diesel RPM, noted.
Old truck driver here.. Diesels like to work . Get em good and hot and as long as you aren't lugging them,(no black smoke) they will be happy. @@Sailingbc
Yes i have found 2200rpm is a sweetspot on speed and fuel economy. 2800rpm is my Yanmar max cruising according to manual. The engine only had 50 hours on it when we bought it and was 9 years old. Not even broken in yet...
How did we get "salty" but Adel looks the same as 30 years ago? Love the videos makes me not feel 3000 miles away.
Haha! I sold my soul to Ursula the sea witch!!! Thanks Rob!
Movie magic brother... Its like looking at Rob Lowe in the mirror when I wake up then takes me hours to get this salty authentic sailor aesthetic.
Cribbage is definitely an old people thing😂😂😂 JK it’s a great game! You guys are killing it! The drone footage is sweet too.
I know this boat, she is a beauty but the 2 amazing humans sailing it are phenomenal and we can’t wait to spend some time with all 3 of you soon🥰
Really good stuff and good on you. We have a Sun Odyssey 40 (2003) and sail/race in Commencement Bay (Tacoma) and take a summer cruise north, spending most of our time in the Gulf Islands. Your LaConner bridge experience has been shared MANY times...I know my math and it is still very exciting. Looking forward to more of your adventures. Dave Stromquist S/V Stardust.
Thanks Dave! Hope to run into you on the water 😊
Thanks Dave. Hope to share a glass at an anchorage one day.
Beautiful boat in a beautiful area. Please share all your newby adventures as you become seasoned seasalts as well as your refits. Looking forward to future episodes
My parents taught me how to play cribbage at around 8 yrs of age. Now I play it on the computor without the need for cards.I always count my hand as well as my oponents hand .Keeps one mentally allert.
Well i think we are going to practice on the computer... so far getting our butts kicked against seasoned vets.... lol
Thank you for a trip through nostalgia. I spent 4 years, mostly single handing in the same waters and "practicing my anchoring/mooring skills. I learned the hard way that I was almost always better off grabbing a can from the cockpit, using two lines, each with anti chafing material at the can and doing my best to avoid a stern tie. Ended up well into Alaska with memories that I will cherish for life. Watching you navigate the same experiences I had makes me smile. Have fun!
Always learning and never let my ego get in the way to take advice. Stay tuned, in a coming up episode, I (Chris) do my first solo trip to the gulf islands where I solo stern tie in Pirates Cove and Princess Cove providing entertainment for the other boats. lol
Enjoying your content very much. How about a boat tour?
Thanks 😊 I think a boat tour would be fun!
I think that can be arranged, we have an episode coming up that we do a major electrical upgrade too
Hey like you guys, looking forward to seeing more content. Jim
Thanks Jim 👍 we’re working on it 😊
Hey Jim, thanks for watching, we just posted another video to check out!
It looks amazing there! Great video I love how clean and clear the water is 😍
Honestly the PNW is full of surprises! Warm water, white sand beaches and above all incredibly generous people. Get here asap!!
You can't beat the water quality but wouldn't mind some warmer currents :)
Hi, hope to see a lot more content. Thanks jim
Thanks Jim! We’ve Learned so much from you tube and really appreciate the support to continue building our knowledge.
You bet!
Nicely done. We can relate to much of what you experienced with the mooring and the stern tie. We hope to head down to the gulf islands this summer for a change, after three summers in Desolation. We often do weekends at Plumper Cove Marine park and the moorings there are similar. Sometimes we will back into them, put the dock line through, and then just walk it to the bow cleats. Enjoyed your video.
Thanks - looking forward to seeing you on the water 😊
Grabbing the buoy from the swim platform works way better, eventually figured that out. lol
Hey guys, congrats on your crossing! No question those buoys can be a challenge when it comes to hooking up. Like everything else surrounding cruising it will get easier with practice. On another topic, I take it you are flying a small drone? Under 250g? Please be mindful of areas like Newcastle which is technically an airport. Sea planes in and out if you are not a licensed drone pilot I would encourage you to check out the Canadian Drone Pilot Association for details and links to transport Canada drone flight rules. No question drones provide a unique opportunity to film (I use one a lot) but paying attention to where you fly is paramount. Anyway really enjoying your travels out on the water, looking forward to your next vid!
Thanks. Yes the drone is a mini under 250g and do pay attention to flight paths and recommendations/alerts by the flight app. Will check out the assoc u mentioned. Cheers.
Thanks so much for the great advice. Always appreciate local insight and knowledge 😊
Drone footage taken in a water aerodrome.... forbidden within 3NM of the centre of such aerodrome. (Or 1NM from the heliport nearby, which also probably applies from the looks of the anchorage).
Thanks. I have checked and is permitted there, caution advised. It is outside the heliport 1nm radius. I find the DJI app pretty good about restricting flying zones.
Thank you for a great video. These are my home waters too. I wish you’d post more videos, I can really identify. Cheers. 👍🏻
Thanks for the support! We're working on more videos 👍
We have lots of footage and episodes to come. Been so busy learning to sail and working full time that we got way behind on editing... .stay tuned!!!
I normally pick up mooring balls while single handing; and the only way to catch them is off the stern and then either walk the line forward in low winds, or in more wind tie a long line from the bow and disconnect from the stern to let the boat fall off. Then motor towards the ball while shortening the bow line or use the windlass post to pull the boat close to the ball. It keeps the boat in control at all times.
That is great advice, seems way easier in Caribbean on those other channels lol. We have been back a number of times since and getting better. Usually approach upwind or up current from stern and drift back. Sometimes that is still sketchy, like the idea of using the longer line that is already attached to the bow cleats.... thanks.
Nice boat, have a good time out there.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment Doug.
Thanks for checking out the channel 😊
Dangler... lol.
Where's Bella?
She blew her knee out a few weeks before we left and went to grandmas. She was back in action for our summer sailing to desolation sound. New episode coming eventually lol.
Hey guys enjoyed the video! Familiar places… Dodd Narrows and Pirates Cove. Nice to show the challenges and how you guys deal with them. Keep the vids coming! 👍🏻👍🏻
I wish I had a clamp mount for GoPro back then, missed a lot of footage. Without it, when things go wrong and first thing you do is drop camera to avoid impending disaster 😂
@@Sailingbc yeah, absolutely!
Great videography and lovely area
Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
The Newcastle buoys are definitely not lift-able. That is a lesson we have seen many cruisers learn the first time in. More than once we have run over in the dingy to help get a line on. Other buoys like Montague and Bedwell harbour can be lifted. At Newcastle if the conditions allow we pick up the mooring at our stern where it is easier to reach, get a line on it and walk it forward. Then you are off for a stern tie at Pirates, I guess you enjoy a challenge. For there we have about 300' of (I think) 3/8ths poly. We drop the hook and then I hop in the dinghy and run an end to a ring and then back to the boat where I can tie off and make adjustments. We haven't perfected the maneuver and I am glad we didn't have our last tie up on video as we may have had to censor my wife's language some.
Thanks for the info. We’re always learning and editing for language 🤣 hope to see you on the water 👍
Great video! Terry and I have been there trying to get a mooring ball.! Can''t wait to see you out there one day soon. Kevin & Terry , Occasio
Thanks guys - so fun to share our experiences. Will definitely have to plan a meet up on the water 👍
Thanks! seems like a lifetime ago. lol. We really should buddy boat out for a weekend to Gambier or Newcastle before you head south... Also there is the Jeanneau meetup in June at Poet's cove we are going to.
Welcome back! I certainly understand the editing time requirements…it takes me forever too…lol. I’m your newest subscriber.
Thanks for checking us out 👍 working on season 2 atm so hope to get something new out soon
Thanks for subscribing. Will check out your channel tonight. Ya I know I am the worst at getting content out. 😭
You channel is off to a great start! Nicely done. Enjoyed the episode. Look forward to more. I think we were anchored next to you guys in Rebecca Spit in Aug 2022. Our channel is @barloventosailing. Hope to see you on the water.
Hi - thank you! yes I remember seeing you there! I didn’t know you had a channel too - will subscribe 👍 hope to see you on the water too 😊
What an adventure! So cool and thank you for sharing. Your videos make sailing look so peaceful but it’s also a lot of work. Have you ever taken time to appreciate what it would have been like hundreds of years ago when they would sail the seas with no comforts of today? Serious bravery and skill. Keep the videos coming. This land lovers enjoys watching from my comfy warm and dry couch.
Hi Kit! Thanks for your comment. Yes definitely something I think about - especially when we are anchored in areas with large tidal shifts and rocky outcrops. The early explorers on the west coast were a serious bunch. Technology and Chris’ understanding of the wind and waves definitely make it easier for me 🍻
He was using words I've never heard before!😂
Thanks Kit, appreciate the kind words and yes, it is not lost on me the challenges of sailors even 25 years ago had let alone hundreds.
These videos make me so happy, even though they’re a year old it makes me feel connected to you guys again. I so hope that I can make my plans work and come see y’all and Rich next year.
Thanks Rob!! We would love to see you anytime!! Try to visit in the summer tho so we can go sailing and surfing!!
Well let’s get you up here Rob, can’t wait to hang with ya.
Aha...the mystery is now solved! I never could find out who fixed my mooring lines. Thank you so very much. The "lockdowns" made it impossible to tend to everything )-: Keep up the great work with your vids.
Thanks Scott! Your boat is a beaut and we couldn’t just leave it. Hope to see you out on the water 👍
Hey Scott, was thinking back to that during editing and hoping you’d be ok with it. Even tried to google your boat but didn’t find it. Will keep an eye out for you on the water.
@@afriesen72 Glad you couldn't leave her alone. Hope to see ya'll out on the water someday too....but not in the winter (-:
@@Sailingbc Indeed - OK with the vid and the good deed.
Awesome video guys, so hardy for winter sailing!
We were so eager, the cold wasn’t that bad but now that we have had a taste of summer desolation sound and the gulf islands, a little tougher hearing up for the snowy sail days. lol
Great video guys! Quite the cold passage to get north. Nice touch at the end to get us all up to date. Looking forward to some buddy boating this summer!
Yes! Let’s plan a trip 👍
Let us know when you’re out cruising this spring. Any plans?
Love it. Sounds like Red Green takes up sailing. Keep going guys.
Red Green for sure eh 👍😊
I was going for Jeff bridges but will take Red Green, just need to step up my comedy game. 🤣
Nice to see local sailors put out videos. I'm in New Westminster.
Right on... great to have the local community watching. thanks!
Can’t wait to see more adventures
Well hoping to get to Denman for a visit, still havent been up there yet.
@@Sailingbc Id so love to see you both its been way too long
Good to see your latest content! Hopefully will see you soon a CHM.
Thanks, we have a permanent spot there now on B dock. #SpoilerALERT... we have renamed the boat ULUWATU ;)
@@Sailingbc I have walked past a few times doing dock walks lol. Glad to hear that you have your own spot!
Yes guys the is the giids
The Giidiest :P
Enjoyed seeing local sailors putting some stuff out. Hoping for lots more! (also in Vancouver)
Thanks Michael, any local favourite anchorages that we should check out for future episodes?
Bravo!!! Take the leap and get on board
Would love to hear how the winter went. We will be onboard full time this winter in the San Juans. Any tips or antidotes would be appreciated.
Thanks for the comment and question. We don't live aboard but we feel like we could. The San Juans are so incredibly beautiful that you will be living in a dream. Warm clothes and a good reliable heater are the most important things. Everything else is relative to your comfort level. The best thing we did for our boat was to install lithium and solar to make life easier on the hook. Being able to go where we want and not worry about shore power is freedom. Even during the winter, the solar array has juice and as you know, our winters are sunny despite the snow and cold. We'd love to hear your experiences too. Please keep in touch : )
That boat is a beaut, but you guys are crazy! At least with motorcycles, when it snows, you have an excuse not to go out on them. Nice work finding that fuse there Christopher!
Thanks 😊 it’s tough to strike a balance between boats and motorbikes but we are dedicated to both 😂
@@afriesen72 well, bless you both on water and tarmac. Piously, The Rev.
