    Hi Hamid. I saw your last video with the damage and to me it looks like birds poking around looking for worms under the cardboard. We have magpies here and they can be pretty mean spirited animals. They just pull plants out for fun while they poke around. I imagine your crows would be similar. They probably have chicks to feed at the moment. An investment in hoops and net will pay dividends. There's probably other animals around English gardens, but the way the cardboard is thrown about and plants pulled out for no reason looks familiar. Anyhow, keep up your enthusiasm and think of the healthy food you're providing your family.

    I didn't water my second early potatoes as much as they actually needed, as I thought the rain would be enough, which it clearly wasn't as half of them have already gone yellow & the two containers I emptied only gave 2.5kg, rather than the 3.5-4kg I expected. Did you find out yet what the pest is- fox/rabbit/rats? I've given up on getting any melons this year - too flippin' cool & the aubergines are looking iffy. Even with the poor season, all you have to do to feel better is look back at your videos from when you first started & see the big difference you've made. Always look on the bright side...

      I expect my potatoes to do the same then, you've already harvested, does that mean I should be doing the same? Mine are second early also. No not yet, I took a mini break as I got fed up. I'm back today and going to plant some more beans but net them this time and see how that goes so wish me luck! This year has been a testing year but you're right we need to always look on the bright side!

    Life is more chaotic than an unpruned tomato plant (😂 garden analogy). So we all understand and family is way more important than veg. It has been so hot here I didn’t get even outside to tie up my tomatoes so,they have fallen over taken over and are still producing so nature finds a way. It will all be ok and if not oh well. Oh no, how devastating for you, after all your hard work! We are plagued by rabbits and badgers at our allotment and I have to net or barrier EVERTHING. On the sweetcorn, I use sticks in the ground and clip the green debris netting to them around the bed as a barrier, to deter them, it also helps prevent wind rock. I've also used the plastic barrier netting they use on building sites with sticks threaded through the holes and placed around the beds. It's fairly cheap and in black, not as unsightly as the orange. It lasts a few seasons before it gets a bit tatty, but it's effective. We are constantly trying to fight nature in this game and she's much smarter than we'll ever be! Keep going, good luck! 😊

      This is my second year at the allotment and last year I didn't net anything without issues. I'm learning very quickly this year how bad it can get. At home I've been gardening for 5 years and haven't had to net anything either so it's been hard for me to see it all happen. The good thing is that I've had a crash course and will be netting everything going forward! Thanks for taking the time to watch and share advice 🙏🏾

    The vegetables I'm growing in containers is doing a whole lot better than the crops I've planted in the ground! Runner beans are well behind this year too and the peas are just a right off!! But we persevere don't we? Your plot is doing pretty well considering the odds against us this year so far.

    • @LifeAtTheHamids

      Yeah, my container crops are not doing so bad. I'm tempted to grow the rest at home now and not the allotment due to what's happening in the allotment. There’s a couple of problems. Do you use animal manure as it could be excessive nitrogen manure problem. Needs to break down properly. Then the wood chip encourages too many wood lice which then eat the peas. Try using just compost as the soil really needs the carbon mainly as they feed on that. The animal manure may have pesticide chemicals in as well as animals are medicinally treated.

    • @LifeAtTheHamids
      @LifeAtTheHamids 18 днів тому

      I do use animal manure but I didn't in the bed with the peas. I put it on the tomato bed and the raised bed if I can remember. Other than that it was spent mushroom compost on all the other beds. I don't think I'll be using bought manure anymore anyway as I have all of the chicken manure anyway.

    i have to admit, i'm not a fan of using wood chip as a mulch. as it rots down it depletes the nitrogen the plants need for new growth. your apple tree could be a good example of that. i prefer to use the chips on the path for a year or two first, THEN put it on the beds and renew the paths with fresh wood chips. try removing the wood chips from the apple tree and give a feed of epsom salts..............brian

      I know exactly what you mean and hence why I don't use it as a mulch. This was the directions from the supplier I bought the rootstock from hence why I followed it. Thank you for your advice, I will try the Epsom salts and remove the wood chip and see how that goes! 🙏🏾

    Your climbing beans look better than mine-mine are completely invisible after two sowings. Not a single one germinated, so I’ve resorted to bush/dwarf beans just to get some beans this year. It’s been a wonky season here in the states too, gets frustrating but it will still produce something 😊

    Apple tree looks like fruit blight but I would take it out the pot check is not too damp in the bottom of the pot it's been very wet plastic pots can sweat quite badly and it's been hot and cold a lot they will always be more diseases at an allotment I would put some grit in the bottom of the park lift it up off the ground on bricks spray with plant invigorator and some blight guard next year and put a small handful of chicken pellets on the top and take off the wood chippings

      Thank you so much for this! I'll be doing this on the weekend and most likely make a video out of it. I hope it's not my fault as they say if planting in containers I should ensure it's well watered. Either way I'll do my best to sort it out!

    It's not just you matey. My climbing French beans are only 20cm high after three weeks & this is in the polytunnel for warmth! This continuing cool weather is holding back the heat lovers such as tomatoes, French beans, aubergines & peppers. I planted far too many broad beans last October (two, 8m double rows). Picked about a quarter of them today: 14kg! This includes pods but stripped will still be at least 4kg of beans to freeze for winter. I'd definitely give your potatoes a liquid feed.

    • @LifeAtTheHamids
      @LifeAtTheHamids 19 днів тому

      I know, still a shame though. I'm still happy to be out and part of the process, so can't complain. Sounds like a great harvest. I may try growing broad beans next year. I didn't like them till recently, my sister changed that with her amazing cooking. I will definitely feed them but I'm going to leave two to see how they do compared to the other batch since I have enough to play with.

      Yes I plan to. Although I'm thinking of fertilising one or two to see if it makes a difference adding after or is there a point of no return. I have like 6 to play with so using two should be fine and give me enough data.

    Brassicas are looking excellent 👍. Awesome tomatoes 🍅 already 🎉, I have some flowers but not actual tomatoes yet. You can also stick suckers in a jar of water and they will get roots. I have seedlings like those from the neighbors trees 🤦‍♀️. It’s been a very odd year for most people but we keep going and do what we can. Have an amazing weekend hugs to Daffy and Elijah 🥰, Ali 🌞🥵🇨🇦

      Thanks, I wish they were further along but this year as with others has been a wreck! I'll be happy whatever the outcome, I'm enjoying the journey, process and building a community of like minded people. I didn't think to put them in a jar of water. I'm always having to keep them moist in the ground. This will save me a lot of time! 🙏🏾🎉 Hope you have an amazing weekend also, hugs and from Daffy and Elijah 🎉☺️❤️

    • @LifeAtTheHamids
      @LifeAtTheHamids 19 днів тому

  • @valeriepillon6960
    @valeriepillon6960 19 днів тому

    I think the difference is already evident with the potatoes so I would fertilize them. At the end of the day, this is about providing food for your family. You have to take advantage of the growing season while it’s here. If you had a lot more space to grow, then I would experiment perhaps. So that’s my vote.

    I think you proved the point with the Compost fertility and although it maybe too late I would start feeding. I wonder what compost you used? Edit, just been back to look what you used and looks it was Verve multipurpose, which is designed to be fed after 4-6 weeks. Lovely video, well presented.

    • @LifeAtTheHamids
      @LifeAtTheHamids 19 днів тому

      Yes it was Verve multi-purpose. I didn't know that it was designed for use at that stage. I used it last year for my container potatoes at home with no issues. I wonder whether there is anything else at play. I may feed with some fertiliser and leave one of them to follow through. I really appreciate the feedback and thank you for watching!

    When you're planting brussels sprouts (or cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli...), set them deeper than they were in the pots & really firm down the soil round them. I actually use my heel round brussels once they've been in the ground for a week or so - reduces the chance of blown or loose sprouts. Sungold's my absolute favourite cherry tomato.
