Derek Runs Again

Приєднався 21 січ 2023
My motivation for creating this channel is to share my experiences managing chronic illness via positive attitude and exercise. I will concentrate on the running side of things although I do cycle as well. In fact, it was cycling a recumbent bike that got me through the hard times, but I never went more than 2 miles from the house for the best part of a decade for fear that I would not make it back!
Could barely walk at times, let alone run, even taking a wheelchair on holiday to help me through the days. However, cycling the recumbent helped stop the downward spiral although I was still having limbs go numb from time to time. Took some getting use too! Finally got strong enough to join my local cycling club, but after 6 or 7 years things started to go downhill again.
Tried walking to keep the fitness up. Lots of it during the pandemic! Started jogging the odd 50 metres, or so. And then thought the unthinkable: could I run again? After almost 2 decades out, now giving it a go!

How to know you will run a PB today - Ganger Farm Parkrun
Loving the interviews at the start 👌
Yes, enjoyed doing them. Thought the Mayor's running memories were very interesting.
Jolly good show and an impressive, nay imposing turn out. And great to see that the parkrun-queuers of Winchester can be every bit as stoic as their Southampton neighbours. Looking forward to giving it a go soon..
It's a wonderful friendly run and a nice course, definitely worth a go.
Thank you for filming Winchester today. Nice to see what happened with the 500 celebrations. I snuck off to Eastleigh for a quieter run
It was lovely to see such a great turnout at Winchester today.
Awesome! I was born in Winchester 60+ years ago and was back once since. Saw Winchester in the title and had to watch. Lovely video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video.
I was there on Sat got a PB 22:36. East Grinstead is boggy a true cross country course but a great run same as Uckfield. If you don’t mind hills try Kingdom
Well done for the PB!
Looks like a wonderful place to run -- when it's not raining. Thumbs up for your plea to bring back the stats. But it's not just the numbers that are a problem. You wouldn't think running around a park could get so complicated.
Yes, it's a great place to run! Unfortunately, it will probably take a change of Parkrun leadership before anyone corrects the error of removing the stats.
Congratulations Ganger Farm!
Its a lovely parkrun isn’t it! Loved the down hill sections of the course
Yes, beautiful! I'm probably different from most as I prefer the uphill sections, but that's due to health problems that affect the balance and joints which are easier to manage on the inclines.
For some additional context, Robert had almost all the 80+ parkrun records in Sussex when they removed the stats…
Wow, didn't know that. What an excellent record. Very inspirational!
@@derekrunsagain He’s my grandpa, the whole family was gutted when they removed them! A challenge he set himself before turned 80, a legacy of sorts, and then they just took it down!
@@TheJomightymaniac It can be hard for people to admit they got it wrong, but let's hope they reinstate the stats. They were without a doubt a great inspiration.
@@derekrunsagain Robert is an absolute legend.
I get the feeling that the run director knew full well what the record times are but wasn't prepared to say on camera.
Would love to see those stats return. Many people found them very inspirational.
Did 16:32 there at event 4. It's still the male record. I've got the fastest at Ganger Farm 16:42 as well. Wakehurst is nicer in the summer!
Well done James! That's a fantastic time considering all those undulations.
Love your number plate Derek.
We got it because Penny is leading the almost 5000 people in the RR10 race series attendance stats and, obviously, it needed either JOG or RUN to finish off! Easy to remember too.
@@derekrunsagain amazing stuff! Well done Penny! Rolls off the tongue easily too
Went to wakehurst on friday for a walk when the weather was glorious. Walked part of the course and it looked steep in places! So not one for a fast time! Hope the tyre got fixed ok
Weren't so lucky with the weather! But the tyre is sorted now. Also, a tree fell on the power lines near the B&B where we stayed and so we had no electricity - but still just about managed to shower. It was all happening on Saturday!
looks like a fab event, well done! I did the "final ever" malling parkrun today
Really great event. Enjoyed helping Ganger Farm celebrate their 100th run. Hope you had a good run at Malling!
@@derekrunsagain Thanks, yes it was great weather for it, a great turnout of 300+ and a sub 24 run which is always good
Wow 100 at Ganger Farm! Haven’t been there in a while! Thanks for sharing Derek!
Yeah, up to 100 already. Time flies! 🙂
Great video. I really enjoyed taking on the Clarendon and it was good to have a catch up on the way around.
Great to talk to you! Glad you enjoyed the video and had a good run.
Great video Derek! I ran the Clarendon marathon a couple of years back and thoroughly enjoyed it, was a great race to do
Cheers. One of the best trail races in the UK. Has everything bar PB potential, unless it's a Clarendon PB!
Sorry to hear the leg is painful. Hope it will get better soon. Listen to your body Derek !
Managed a few very short walks today without limping. Not sure when the jogging will resume.
Sorry to hear you've been having a difficult time with your leg. Hope things improve for you
Cheers. Not limping today. So hoping to start back with some walking in a few days.
Welcome back Derek!
Thanks. Not sure how long it's going to last as I'm limping round the house at the moment!
Always nice to get out. How's the leg doing now?
Unfortunately, not so good!
@@derekrunsagain drat. Get better soon then mate.
@@markg99 Thanks!
Respect❤Derek,inspirational
Cheers!
Good to see you where i walk the dog regularly. (I wasn't there myself unfortunately, as had an errand at parkrun time) You are truly incredible what you achieve - and with a smile. Keep going
Thanks. Definitely keeping smiling!
Amazing!
Cheers!
Inspirational doesn't cover it. I whimped off Darlington park Run this morning with a slight tweak to my hip. Shame on me. Derek you're a legend. If you ever make it up here you can pace me to sub 21.
Hopefully, will be doing a bit of Parkrun tourism soon. We've occasionally been in your direction, so you never know. Maybe that's the trick, to pace someone else to your target !
Inspiring Derek i suspected you had been struggling, great attitude thats what winning looks like getting out there and doing your best, we’re all with you on this sub 21 journey. 🎉
Try not to let the struggles show too much but sometimes it's just unavoidable. Thanks for your kind words.
Such inspiring stuff Derek, very powerful message, no hype, no spin, no fanfare. Hope you see the MS symptoms fade and show us all a sub 21 mate. Hats off to you!! 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️👍👍👍
Cheers! Will back off a bit over the next couple of weeks as I likely provoked the monster by running 4 times this week. Can be hard to know what you can and can't do. Have done quite a few runs in the 21 mins so would be great to get that sub 21!
Good on you mate. Showing us how it's done in difficult circumstances 💪🏃♂️
Thanks!
Hi Derek, I made an appearance in your video at 3 mins 30. Must have started my watch slightly later in the rush to get there as I was given official time of 24 mins 11 😂 liked and subscribed, hopefully see you again soon
Hi Richard! Great to meet you. Hope to get your name right the next time we meet! 🙂
Half the usual runners. Clearly the tough ones. We went to Basingstoke and it was very wet
When the going gets tough ... 🙂 Must do Basingstoke sometime.
@@derekrunsagain - we got the train from Winchester. Fairly straightforward
Lovely day for it, Derek 😅 Well done sir! 👍🏃♂️
Yes, a lovely day! Thanks. Went better than expected.
Good video as usual. Only 390 runners this week at my local run, compared to over 600 the last 2 weeks so the weather does impact alot! A decent 23.33 this week for me
Glad you had a good run. The numbers were cut by half at Eastleigh too.
Thanks for the video Derek, out of rain or sun I’d rather sun, but cloudy is even better !
Yes, cloud probably tops the list for many.
Gwaaaaan derek good job
Thanks!
May i know what camera your using in this video? Found your channel from a coment about the Action 3. Planning to buy a Action 3.
Glad you found the channel! I am using the Osmo Action 3 - bought the adventure pack which has 3 batteries plus other useful bits, very good value! Been very happy with the camera.
Pathetic.
A model like Strava or Facebook, where data is kept more private, and users have more control over who sees what sounds good. Can't resist change all the time, positive change is good. Not having gender stats removes barriers to participation, for someone who doesn't identify as either male or female. However, all parkrun statistics should be optional- if you want to view Age Graded or Course records and so on, u should be able select yes at sign up, or no if you don't.
Opt in for the stats, nice idea!
@@derekrunsagain Giving people no choice at all, that's what's so wrong about what they're doing
Thanks for the video Derek. I have occasionally not started the run on my watch too **Panic** lol !
Yes, panic at the start. Was tricky trying to put things right juggling the camera and watch!
Nice to see what was crackin at Eastleigh. Good video
Eastleigh is a great course. Always enjoyable to show it off!
Well done, Derek. The interviews at the start were a nice touch 👍
Thanks! The interviews at the end have a couple of surprises in them too!
Great running, Derek. I keep telling myself PB's are behind me, but you prove it can be done.
Thanks. Still hoping to go sub 21 and maybe even sub 20 on a good day and on the right course.
@@derekrunsagain Come to Poole! If you remember we inivited you when we met on 29/07/2023. Let us know when you'll be down!
@@neilryan666 Hope to get to Poole sometime this year (looking to do a bit of parkrun tourism in October). Sounds like a great PB course. Unfortunately the neuro problems have been playing up recently, so haven't been able to safely hold the camera. Will let you know when I'll be there 🙂
Congratulations on reaching 400 subscribers. Fantastic to be in the great outdoors. Plenty of fresh air out there.
Thanks! Great to be outdoors!
Good fun at Ganger Farm. Well done
Yep, great fun! A big turnout too.
Well done Derek 🎉
Thanks. Quite unexpected, but very welcome!
@derekrunsagain I got my second fastest Salisbury this year (and did my first senior first-timers briefing before!)
@@tomlay4884 That's great!
@derekrunsagain especially as I hadn't run there since pre birthday (mid June)
congrats on your PB!
Thanks. Good conditions today - no long grass. Still got my eyes on a sub 21.
Is this where all the chalk markings have come from then?!?!
Yes, but doubt they'll last long - heard that the dogs were licking them up even before the start of the race!
@@derekrunsagain probably flour then! one good rain and it’ll be gone
Thanks for the video Derek, Iv'e never heard of a staged 10K Run before. It seems a little odd to me stopping and starting. I may well have a go next year if they hold it again.
You should try it - a bit like intervals with the racing element thrown in!
Sad to have Missed this for the first time since it started a few years ago - and this the first year they’ve issued medals instead of a packet of flower seeds!
We got the seeds as well as the medals! Hope you are able to do it next year. It's such a great event.
As the event is run in stages there should be beer stops. And how about chips to compliment the chip timing?
Didn't need the chips, the breakfast butties and cake were amazing! 🙂
It did come out really well
Thanks Steve!
@@derekrunsagain Hey Derek - I see you name page Derek Runs Again with an old running picture featured and I just wondered if you ran for a club and if our paths crossed anywhere back in the 80's or early 90's.
@@stevethomas8375 I was a member of a few clubs in the past: Hardley Runners, IBM and Romsey Road Runners. Though due to my health issues was never able to attend club nights much. Did a bit of running around Gloucester too, where I grew up.
