1) Dump all of your essays to a single doc, extract 3-7 questions that you think generalize to the majority of them. Examples could be: "What is your field of study, and why do you want to pursue it?" "What is an important part of your identity?" "In what ways are you a leader in your community", etc. 2) Keep a running document, chronologically ordered, that contains all of your writing/ideatio...

Hello! Will these sessions be occurring for this application cycle? Thank you so much!
Hey, are you also planning to apply for fall 2025 entry?
@@universalmind7549 yes, you too ?
Hello! The Personal Statement Workshop link is not working.
Joel, I am here because I just met your father at Safeway in Mount Vernon. He sure is proud of you! I was stopping quick for a few things, (in my uniform, which I try to avoid). He told me your birthday is coming up next week so Happy Birthday! And you sure have a proud father! semper fi!
I 100% agree with you I really appreciate all your advice that it exactly what im going to do thank you for this video you made it was very very helpful
The extracurriculars that I ace done in high school are High School Junior Varsity basketball in ninth grade, as well as playing on two outside AAU basketball teams in high school, Varsity High School Basketball in tenth grade as well as playing on two outside AAU teams, I also learned how to play the guitar by myself, was very into writing movies and short stories as well as poems. I also joined multiple clubs my junior year such as Alternative music club, Patterns(Poetry Club), Writing Club, Film Club, Drama Club, Photography club, Young black peoples leadership club, Key Club, College Committee, Environmental Conservation Club, World Issues Club. My senior year I was in a poetry club, Multicultural club, Anime Club, Black Student Union, Mental Health Club, and Sing. With all of these extracurriculars do you think I have a good chance of getting in to Stanford?
I know this video was posted three years ago but if anyone can answer this question for me then that would be great. I did not take an SAT or ACT in high school I only took a PSAT and I did pretty poorly on it, but I did a lot of extracurriculars in High School and I ended with a 3.0 and right now I am in community college and I graduate this year, so far I have a 3.5 GPA, am apart of the Honors Program at my community college, am also apart of this National Honor Society called the NSLS, and I am going to be the president of my student government association, and I have worked five jobs from my time in my senior year of high school to now. So with all of these accolades do I have a good chance of getting in despite me not taking an SAT or an ACT in high school?
Hey Joel I am an international transfer applicant I have completed 2 years of my college education from an accredited 4 year university. My CGPA is 3.93 but due to my circumstances I lack in extracurricular and other activities but I still took leap of faith and applied to transfer admission at Stanford. Just be real with me what are my chances? I will really appreciate your answer.
Hey, did you apply?
Hi, I know it’s been 3 years but I’m also considering transferring to top schools like stanford from state school known for business (I’m a finance major) I decided to take 2 years off bc first I decided to do my mandatory military service in my home country (will serve at US military base as a foreign army) and second my mom got cancer and family’s financial struggles (I can’t pay for tuition so I gotta work). I was wondering if this would count as non-traditional background. And what should I highlight the most on application?
Does it have to be statement or story ?
I applied on a whim, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take
Hey Joel! are you still doing office hours? Planning to apply this march and currently working on my essays, found ur vids very helpful.
Hello! How do I reach out to you for help with this?
Thank you so much for these videos Joel! Everything your saying resonates with me so deeply. Your videos have given words to feelings that I've been experiencing for a really long time now.
Mr. Johnson I’m currently a freshman at the US Air Force Academy, but from a personal perspective it really doesn’t feel like an environment I belong in. Is there any chance to have a conversation with you at some point in time?
This is such a well balanced, honest, and yet comforting video. It really resonated with me. Thank you.
Do u have there office hours anymore?
I’m going to try to transfer ! I really hope it works out I’ve been in cc for 5 years now and I never applied to a university , but my gpa right now is a 2.9 due to changing majors a lot , if I wait another year in college and get straight a’s I’ll have a 3.4 which is much better. But I will spend another year . Any advice is appreciated
This disclaimer from the start is always bschool vibe
Ok
I really want to transfer to Stanford but I feel like I have no support or encouragement. If anyone is reading this comment and can help me out, please reach out.
This video is definitely the most helpful and specific one I’ve seen out of all the transfer advice videos I’ve watched. I’m not nontraditional (transferring from a state school) and have no chance of getting into Stanford thru transfer, but this will definitely help me for my other transfer applications.
are these still happening in august-sept 2023? when would be the next one? what are the new timings?
They are still happening -- there's a link in my bio that goes to a Google calendar, that will have the dates. Next one is tomorrow evening (Wed, Aug 16th) @ 6 PM Pacific
Correction: next session will be Aug 30th

I’m currently an active duty marine, and these videos are so helpful bc I’m applying to Stanford for next fall! You’re the man! If there’s a way I could get some personal tips, marine to marine, I would gladly appreciate it! If not, could you make a video specifically at veterans! Thanks!
Hey man, absolutely, would love to help out. I'd recommend you start by dialing in to the office hours sessions (check the Google calendar in my bio for more details) and I can get you some help there -- just the easiest way for me to help people without completely filling my schedule!
Can I transfer to Stanford University from John Cabot University Italy? Please answers asap.
Hell yeah! Congrats on your achievements. I just completed my associates from SJCC. 9 year Marine Veteran and trying to transfer to Stanford. Wish me luck.
You mentioned that you should have a perfect marriage between your past experiences and why you chose Stanford, is there any particular reason why you chose Stanford?
Thank you for doing these! I really want to attend a session in June. 😊 are you still doing 1st and 3rd Wednesdays?
Hi! Had to shift my session on May 3rd to next week, May 10th, so that's the next one that's happening.
Do you work one on one with potential transfers trying to get in?
Hello! Are these sessions still occurring? If so, when will the next session be on?
Hi Micah, Yes the sessions are still happening -- next one is Wednesday, April 5th!
Thanks for the video Joel! Quick unrelated question, are you still doing office hours? I'm planning on transferring and I think those would benefit me and shed light on my intentions behind transferring as well as help me with the long journey of introspection as I wait for the next application cycle. Anyways thanks for these videos and hope you have a good one!
Thank you. I have been worried and turned to some subreddit to get advice about my stats and story, who have told me I have little chance. I'm a transfer, and I am grateful for your perspective, which differs from what I've heard from other successful transfers on subreddits.
Thanks for your videos. I will be applying to T50 US Schools for Fall 2024 Admission.🤩🤩
Hey, how did it go?
Hi, is there any way to contact you? I just want to ask a really short question... the zoom session schedule doesn't work for me :/ I have classes on that time..
Hello man, I will apply for transfers to stanford from an international institution this year. I'm getting one of my recommendation letters from a Stanford professor but people are telling me that it wouldn't affect my application in a positive way that much. According to them, what matters is that if the professor provides new insights about you, not what their title is. Do you agree with this?
Hey, did you apply?
Hey, I'm applying as an international transfer student and apparently my application won't be need-blinded since I'm international. I feel like I have a good story/reasons for transferring but still I'm concerned that Stanford won't let me in because they wouldn't want to pay for me. What would be your suggestion in such a situtation? Shoud I mention about my financial inadequacy and the difference in exchange rates between my country and the US? I don't want to change the focus of my essays from my main story and main reasons for transferring but at the same time I feel like I need to mention that I can't afford the Stanford.
Shoot your shot regardless. Truthfully, I'm not super spun up on how the financial aid works for international students. I would maybe consider speaking about it a little bit in your additional info essay where you can be a little bit more matter-of-fact -- especially if you don't want to reconstruct/rework your essays, provided that they are in fact good representations of your story and your objectives.
Hello, I hope you're well! I may be applying as an international transfer student sometime in the future, and I believe Stanford is need-blind? What makes you think that they aren't? I believe Caltech is one of the only big universities that doesn't offer financial aid to transfer applicants.
@@NasirKhan-dd5il No, stanford is need-aware for international transfers. It's on their official website.
Hey, how did it go, did you apply?
@@mefoskihey, u go to Stanford?
11:42 is so true, had a letter writer that said they were happy to write me a letter of recommendation, and then I told them I wanted to apply to some competitive schools and their mood changed instantly. Made me doubt myself and the process. Great video and thanks for taking the time to make these for us.
I'm sorry to hear that -- I know that can be a tough experience. Hopefully you've been able to find someone else who is more supportive. But then again, for some people that kind of doubt puts a huge fire in their belly and really motivates them to do more! Then again, sometimes that motivation can also turn into resent and can lead into some pretty unhealthy mindsets. Either way, wishing the best for you, Lee. Let me know if I can be of help.
@@theonlyjoelj Thanks man, I appreciate it a lot, it is what it is. I didn't let it get to me. In the transfer process right now, hoping for the best.

Thank you very much for your advice! How can I contact with you? Please, I need your suggestion
Such a great resource! I wish I had something like this when I was going through the transfer process.
thankyou so much i really needed that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My extracurriculars looking empty. I want to do actives worth my time and passion, but I do not know what I really enjoy doing yet. So maybe advice on how to find what you really like doing?
Take a look at what you do right now, and see if there's a way of making it more official and engaging -- if you spend a lot of time looking at fashion, see if there's maybe a way you can get involved in fashion marketing or find a way of getting involved in sustainable fashion or something like that. If you spend a lot of your free time watching stand-up comedy or shows, maybe consider finding an organization or online community that does writing prompt competitions or try your hand at writing your own stuff! I would say that's a great first step, but the next best thing is just to go and do things. Spend a non-trivial amount of time getting familiar with the space (this depends on how busy you are, could be two weeks, could be several months) and if you're not finding yourself thinking about this things on your off time, cut it out of your life and keep searching. Also, look at the people who inspire you professionally, and see what they do in their off time. That might give you some inspiration on what to try on your own
@@theonlyjoelj Thanks Joel. I appreciate u so much
Will the office hours be happening this year?
They will, standby for a video
As someone who's been slowly building my application for the past few months to hopefully transfer to Stanford, this was a VERY insightful video. Thank you for making it.
Glad I could be of help!
Thank you for the helpful video! I'm actually working on this prompt for Stanford as a transfer applicant. I have been struggling with the first paragraph bc I'm not quite sure whether I can start with giving my info background rather directly answering the prompt. Which way do you think is better?
"better" is tough to say exactly, unfortunately. A lot of it comes down to where you feel like your weak spots are that you feel will need more space and time to fully develop sensibly. I encourage you to swing through the sessions, the next one is January 5th @ 6 PM PST; we can try to dive in with a bit more detail. info is in my bio!
Thanks for your response! Ca you tell me how to have access to the session?
its easy to forget the necessity of understanding your value and story separate from college admissions before starting this process, and i cant echo your sentiments enough about the tragedy of allowing gatekeepers to dictate how we feel about ourselves. i have seen friends paralyzed by this and it breaks my heart. this whole video was really invaluable to me esp the part where the beginning of this process starts w adapting a growth mindset, understanding what we care about and then thinking long term to an even better version of ourselves where we have more contributions in that area of interest to show for. sure it’s not a practical step but when you mentioned it i felt this pressure to not waste any more time pursuing topics i don’t genuinely enjoy (i’ve been back and forth considering switching majors for a better fit after my first semester, it feels like im forcing myself to enjoy mechanical engineering) thank you, joel! 🙏
This is awesome news, good on you -- great to see that you're honing in on what you feel moves you! Keep me in the loop, and make sure to document your journey for others, it's absolutely invaluable!
