Thank you for each video you do to educate us on roofs and all the information you speak of. I need my roof replaced and watch your videos to educate myself before I start getting estimates. It is overwhelming to me. Mostly because sadly people take advantage and are not honest. I had a nightmare experience last year with a contractor. So thank you very much.
Good review. The unspoken issue is that ridge vents and turbine vents require wind. No wind = no airflow. I've also heard of some water leakage issues with the turbine venta, though I don't know if that was with this brand or not.

I once emailed the company to try to get the NFVA (net free ventilation area) for the turbine vent, which is required to satisfy HUD code requirements and also satisfy shingle manufacturers warrant requirements. They never responded. So it is uncertain just how much ventilation airflow occurs with a turbine vent when there is no wind.
Mr. Bookman, I guess I thought of you as a CertainTeed guy. Does a Lomanco ridge vent invalidate the CertainTeed Northgate Climateflex shingle warranty? Don't you have to use CertainTeed's ridge vent? And if so, which Certainteed ridge vent do you use or recommend? Also, a roofer making a bid recommended we have them install edge/intake vents due to our house not having soffit vents, since there's not much soffit to speak of on our old 1927 arts and craft home. We weren't even really aware of how much of a problem this was until he pointed this out and did some research on how critical both the intake and outake are - and watched your videos - duh!
As long as there's correct ventilation, that doesn't invalidate the shingle manufacturer's warranty. If CertainTeed made a ridge vent product that was as good as the Lomanco, I would install it, but they don't. They make a ridge vent with the fiber mesh which inhibits the air flow. Good question!!
And, what does one do if there are gable vents at each end of the ridge? How would they affect airflow if ridge vents are added? [To understand air flow, It DOES make a difference to view air as PUSHING from a higher pressure area to a lower pressure area. If air were to be "sucked" from one place to another, it would need energy, from somewhere, to do so. Where would this energy come from, and, HOW would it do it?]
My house was built in 1962. So my current roof has zero vents on my roof I was told only vents under the eves. So when I get my roof replaced and because heat obviously rises where exactly should the roof vents be installed? My thought is up high because of heat rising and because of the vents under the eves. Yet I do not know. Or should the vents be up high as well as lower to? Also how many vents should there be on a 17OO square foot roof?
You should ask a roofer to evaluate that for you, but I would strongly recommend that you choose a roofer who is knowledgeable about it and not just guessing at it.

Even if there is no wind, warm air will still rise to the highest point on your roof; so, venting can still happen.

If we're adding roof-top ventilation, we close the gable vents.
What about leaves sitting in that vented plastic area? Squirts eating the plastic?
Yes, the squirrels eat the plastic to get at the "nesting" material inside it.
